Does the s8 come loaded with bloatware like my Note 5? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

My next upgrade is in November and I'm leaning to either an S8 or + or even a Pixel. I'm saying the Pixel to be rid of bloatware.
Are the Samsung's that much better and then I'd just deal with the bloatware and stop it with my Package Disabler software?
Thanks

Comes pretty loaded. Package disabler works. Or flash unlocked to get rid of the Verizon junk.

Now you have me wondering if there's a flash for the Note until I get the new phone.
Can you explain the unlock flashing , more in detail.
Sounds like you're telling me to stay with Samsung and not go Pixel.

You're in the VZW variant thread so I'm going to g ahead and make an assumption that you're talking about a VZW S8? If so, then yes, they're packed full of Veriozon turd-ware that can't be removed. Having said that, the thing I love about this phone is that you can flash a VZW S8 with the U firmware which eliminates all of the bloat! So, if you're willing to get it and put in a little time up front you won't have those issues anymore!

Seems like good news, but have a couple questions-
What is the "U" firmware?
What do you mean by a little time ?
Thanks

The U firmware is the universal carrier unlocked firmware. There are a number of threads explaining how to load your VZW phone with it. It takes an hour or two total if you have to reload everything.

Really? You can flash on the Verizon s8?
I can see myself spending a lot of time on phone

[Q] Galaxy S5 VS. Galaxy s5 active

I recently purchased the GS5 active and was wondering will there be a new phone thread created specifically for this model or will the GS5 ATT thread work with the active as well. I know of some minor differences manly the fingerprint scanner and the extra shortcut button on the side. Will that affect me from putting roms on that are meant for the s5. Of course this is all theoretical as of now but if anyone could give me a little insight that would be very much appreciated.
I think they will make a new Phone thread for the Active. I hope we get root when the S5 gets root.
My Active (Camo) will be here tomorrow.

Same It looks amazing I just wish they made the back metal. Such a bad move on ATT to lock the boot loader. Its seems futile at this point people are going to root and mod there phones at this point no matter what.

Hi. IF you have not rooted your S5 Active yet, I can confirm that Towelroot is able to root the device. My ATT S5 Active in Camo is rooted using Towelroot. However, I cannot confirm if the new custom ROMS that work on the S5 will work on the S5 Active. Still looking for for a custom ROM to bring back the Stock Car Mode and the Voice Controls.

Ya thank you I wouldn't recommend to try them I recently tried flashing the download booster it soft broke my phone and there is now was to fix it at the moment except to send it back to samsung or waiting for the firmware to come out. Also the Gs5 active usies a dif. firmware "sm-g870a" which I learnt the hard way while trying to use the fix for the att version.
This is an example of why you don't buy the special versions of a phone if you plan on doing anything custom with it because usually the original gets the most attention. No need for all the other versions, anyway. Just buy a case and a good screen protector and you have an active. Pointless versions.

Happy new member of the S5 Active club.
Have owned/used most all of the last two years of flagship phones and I really like how this one sits in my hand. If only HTC would figure out that their camera still sucks I'd likely have the M8.
Will see how it holds up but I do feel it's a better combination than phone and case in terms of feel. I'm sure the corners will get beaten up and it'll show other wear a case would usually protect but going to give it a go with this one. The chrome wore off my S4 even with a case so who knows what this will bring.
BTW, YAY REDish (I'm a guy, we only see like 8 colors)

Hey no need for that we all make mistakes once in a while I was excited and I wasn't thinking. Also I didn't flash a rom I meant to say I used the gs5 toolkit to get rid of bloatware...
Dont worry about that dude, at least you learned, and thats what XDA is all about But as excited as you (we all) get, you have to READ READ READ like theres no tomorrow! because as that guy stated, you dont want to end up with a $650 paper weight, no phone and still pay att for their "service" lol and be patient, enjoy the stock phone for now, because once the gates open up when the firmware is released, you're going to have all kinds of fun!

I have used the Tool Kit, (worked perfectly) I have rooted, Installed SS, phone is sick now and running great. I also flashed a T-Mobile ROM, an International ROM, both work and is fine. The Active can do all of those things with only losing your extra button function. I am now back to my Stock rooted firmware but its all good. I will be waiting on a Active Forum and DEV work there. So far, everything is okay flashing regular s 5 stuff.

I read and saw that you said that you flashed a T-Mobile rom... Did Wi-Fi calling work? I'm using my s5 active unlocked on T-Mobile now and until there's a way to unlock the aws bands like they did on the S4 active(hopefully they will) I'll be stuck with edge until the network refarm is complete. I'm definitely interested in seeing how you did that.

N920C vs N920I on AT&T?

Looking to pick up one of these variants to use on AT&T and from my understanding, they both support all AT&T bands.. Is there any pros and cons to either variant? Which one works better on AT&T? Sorry if this was already asked but I didn't see any comments specific to AT&T..

I use the i varient on att. Now i am using the c version marshmallow os. The only hiccup ive had is the csc-country sales code messes with what apps the google market lets you see and install.
Assuming you didn't have any issues with the i software and google apps right? I don't plan on rooting or flashing roms just wanna get away from carrier branding and crap-ware.

No, gmail, etc works like normal. The csc for the i varient i have is XSA so the market thinks im from australia, so news apps give me those feeds. Other than that, its been a good phone without all the att crapware. The c varient software doesnt have any problems at all.

using i version from Singapore on AT&T with no problem whatsoever. You don't get visual voicemail with unlocked international phone. But I don't really care about it. I hate AT&T crapware and limitations.
Nice. Same here. I hate AT&T crapware. I had the Note 5 AT&T model and got so fed up with it that I sold it and got a Nexus 6P but now I want a Note 5 again since they're really good prices on them now. Since I have the nexus 6p I don't get any of that stuff so I wont miss it.. Thanks...

Unlocked firmware to Verizon S8

Has anyone tested yet the SM-G950U1 firmware from Updato.com in your Verizon S8 yet? prior to the S8 i had the 7 Edge with unlocked firmware and worked just fine, just wondering if this is official build on the net.
It is and it works. I'm using it now. Gear VR supposed to work also but I don't have one to say for sure.

I thought all the US variants of SM-G950U were bootloader-locked and hence we couldn't root. Are you guys saying that with this U1 firmware, it's unlocked and hence we can root? Link? I'm very skeptical this works.
Nobody said it was bootloader unlocked. It's carrier unlocked without any carrier bloat.

No, the firmware comes from the unlocked S8, which means is bloat free, has nothing to do with root.
I've had the U firmware for a couple of weeks and it works great. Just that there's no video calling. Haven't tried wifi calling yet. Those are two features I've barely used. Battery life is great. I think sprint forums are close to root so I might root after they get everything worked out.

Does Verizon's visual voice mail and HD Calling work?
Verion Video calling is no big deal for me, but I have used Wifi calling once or twice from a store that had no Verizon coverage, but had free wifi. I could live without it, but it would be a nice to have. Then again, no bloat, and some of the Samsung features like Cloud Backup would be cool.
Can this be flashed without tripping Knox/Safe flags? And/or is it easy to flash back to stock Verizon without tripping?

Yes, the HD calling works. Calls are extremely crisp. It's as if you were making a Messenger call over Wi-Fi. It's night and day.
I have the Verizon G950U variant and I'm looking for root, sadly this model doesn't have the "OEM Unlock" option under Developer Settings so I can't flash it without tripping Knox or my phone locking up.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Tracfone S8, and flash the Verizon S8 firmware to it? I followed steps from another site and it gave me a firmware with Cricket, Metro pcs, and T-Mobile bloat on it and it was most definitely not Verizon. Anyone have any ideas what might have went wrong? Downloaded Verizon firmware direct from SamMobile but that was what I got. Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated, hope I'm putting this in the right place rather than start a new thread. Any help, tips, guides, download links, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure that if you were to flash any rom or recovery other than the stock (and maybe even that, I'm not sure), it will trip Knox. Your phone might give you the whole "SEAndroid is not Enforcing" boot screen. This happened to me on my Galaxy Note 5, I even tried reflashing it's sitting in my drawer, lol.
I wouldn't take the risk unless you have been given a spare Galaxy S8 by Samsung to expirement with. It's a little too risky for me
I may be an idiot, but I do know that OEM unlocking isn't available in Dev options. I got my Galaxy S8 a few weeks ago and not quite ready to tamper with it.

Wasn't aware of that, I haven't seen anything on xda about it. Will other carrier's SIM cards still work on different roms?
You're kidding right? Those threads were one of the earliest ones posted since the phone was released. If you have an sim unlocked device, it'll work fine, its the same limitation as every other sim locked device. I converted my Vzw S8 to the US unlocked version since Vzw LTE phones come sim unlocked already. Using it on MintSim (Tmo) and it works perfectly fine. Have Wifi calling and VoLTE. If you have any other carrier phones, you'll need to have it sim unlocked to be able to use other providers even if you flash that carrier's rom.

I have Sprint. Which Note 8 to buy? Root. Please Help!

Hello,
Which Note 8 should I buy?
International Version
Unlocked Version
Sprint Version
I heard the processor for the International Version is best I think it stats with an E. Should I get that?
I would like to root.
Does it matter or should I just order one directly from Sprint?
Will this work with Sprint?
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Factory Unlocked Phone - 6.3" Screen - 64GB - Midnight Black (U.S. Warranty)
This one from Amazon?
Should I buy that one above from Amazon or buy it directly from Sprint?
Can I root both of them?
I would like to order one today, I just don't know if I should order from Sprint or Amazon.
P.S.
Also if this is not possible should I get a S8 or S8 Plus? However, reading over on their threads doesn't look like root is possible really there either, hit or miss. Is that true? Which S8 I should get? International or US?
I mainly want apps like:
Ad Block
YouTube Background Player
YouTube Ad Block
ETC...
Please Advise.
you said sprint, sprint is cmda... meaning, exynos WILL NOT WORK. no international phone, you must buy snapdragon. now you have two choices carrier locked, and carrier unlocked. both have a locked boot loader and are not currently capable of root. if you purchase the phone out right it does not really matter which version you get. if you buy sprint locked after 50 days on their network they will carrier unlock the phone. the only true difference is carrier bloatware/ software which I'm hearing can be flashed using odin

from what I hear it is possible to root the s8, but it limits your max battery charge to 80%? kinda a **** trade off if you ask me.
so I'm like you I thought I must have root, my last android was a Nexus with a completely unlocked boot loader and I flashed custom roms when I tired of my current rom. that was four years ago and I've been jailbroke iOS since. do you still need root?
most people will say no. if they say absolutely the main arguments I've heard are for xposed(which doesn't even work on android 7) and viper4android (or some similar name, a sound tweak I think) besides those two, removing bloatware, and hosts file ad blocking.
my personal experience: I will be giving up an unlocked boot loader by purchasing the note 8. this mean no custom roms. I haven't given up hope for a future possible root method, but I am willing to accept that it may never come or when it does we can only charge to 80% or something else ridiculous. I don't need root, I would like it, but I will compromise.
tldr;probably not, especially if you are willing to sub to YouTube red for 10$ a month.

The issue is that the Snapdragons have locked bootloaders but you need a SD version to use the Sprint network. It doesn't matter if you buy a Note 8 or an S8, the issue with the locked bootloader is the same.
For me personally, I need root because a lot of the apps I have use root. If you only wanted to block ads on YouTube, it's probably unnecessary and far more hassle than it's worth.

Last question. I saw on another thread that this ... Is this true? Should I buy one that is unlocked from Amazon or the Samsung site and get hotspot or can I get hotspot on the Sprint one or do I need to search for the perfect app to do it? Which would be easier?
Unlocked version:
Hotspot - Awesome
Download Booster - Awesome
No Bloat - Awesome
Wi-Fi Calling - working awesomely
Sprint Version:
LTE Calling - I might miss, might be worth flashing Sprint mod when available...

Last question. I saw on another thread that this ... Is this true? Should I buy one that is unlocked from Amazon or the Samsung site and get hotspot or can I get hotspot on the Sprint one or do I need to search for the perfect app to do it? Which would be easier?
Unlocked version:
Hotspot - Awesome
Download Booster - Awesome
No Bloat - Awesome
Wi-Fi Calling - working awesomely
Sprint Version:
LTE Calling - I might miss, might be worth flashing Sprint mod when available...

Sorry, I can't provide any guidance in this area. I'm in Australia and don't have experience with the inclusions/exclusions on specific American networks such as Sprint. I do know they use CDMA technology, which the Exynos SoC doesn't support.
Hopefully, one of the other enlightened souls on this forum can help you with this question.

I am on Sprint and am currently utilizing what I posted above as working...I am still finding out other working options as well...ask me about an option and I'll tell you if it is working on the unlocked version.

My question is do I need to get the unlocked version for hot spot to work or will it work with the Sprint version?

The Sprint Version will cut out the download booster and hot spot unless your plan includes it but include calling plus features which include their version of the Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling for surfing over calls....but we already have that with Wi-Fi calling...Sprint also has Bloat software such as VVM but I install Google Voice for voicmail...it is up to you...at this point I have found no function lost.
Oops...I forgot to mention that they may update more frequently or sooner

That is extremely important. Do I have this right? If I buy the unlocked version. Can I surf the internet while on the phone with the unlocked version from Amazon or Samsung or do I need to buy the Spring Version?
Am I understanding that right or did you mean something else?

When I called my wife on Wi-Fi Calling i was able to surf the web as well...I'll double check tomorrow when she is awake though
I have the unlocked version arriving soon and I will be using it with sprint. (With the free 1 year promo)
AFIK only the sprint and unlocked versions are whitelisted to work on sprint. Any other snapdragon models you will need to request a manual request to add your IMEI to the sprint database.
And I believe the Exynos models isn't compatible with CDMA at all, something with licensing or patent issues with Qualcomm.

Oh I mean not on wifi - calling I am just talking about 4G LTE. I mean I have the note 3 right now. LOL. I know super old. I can talk on the cell network 4G LTE and surf the internet at the same time. Can you do that with the Unlocked Version and the Sprint Version or one or the other?

Are you serious. I will be giving up call over data? WHY? Is this like that for Verizon and AT&T? Have they all lost call over data or do they just not want you to be able to do it?
Should I keep my Note 3 for that very reason?
Does any phone like the S8 or S8 Plus have call over data?

Oh my goodness, looks like my note 3 has two antennas and the newer phones have only 1. that is why i can do both. Why would they make the service worse?

How do I unlock the OEM on the SM-N960U T-MOBILE Samsung Galaxy note 9?

I've had it 10 days (assuming relevant), and after entering the developer options, I am not able to find the OEM unlock options.

Return it, and buy an unlockable device.
If it's like the AT&T version, you need the unlock code from T-Mobile. The option to disable a carrier lock is not in developer mode.

Your BL is locked, there is nothing for you to gain be enabling OEM unlock. The people with unlockable devices have to enable OEM to flash twrp...you cannot therefore it is pointless.
Well at least in my point of view, why do you want to enable it?

t mobile sm-n960u unlock ???
Ok I have been on this site for a long time.
Sorry I am not or I do not have to brain power most of you have here on this site doing what you do best
making are phones better a lot of you have the nack for this stuff
at&t note 2 rooted with the help and info from this site htc m7 rooted here t mobile note 4 and note 5
now I jumped and for the fist time I got a current model phone a t junk mobile note 9
I was going to buy an unlocked note 9 from best buy but they said they did not think there phone had the 600mhz B71 band that t junk mobile is suppose
to come out with
but I am thinking about returning this phone to t junk mobile I just get the unlocked one from best buy
this phone would not be that bad if I can get rid of t junk mobile ad on boot up logo and jingle sound but I found an app silent boot to fix that but
that is adding anther app on my phone that I really do not want
So Question? did Samsung finally beat this forum In lets say hacking there phone's???
if so and you can not root a phone you just paid $1000. for would it not be best just to get a phone that can be rooted to get rid of all the dam junk apps
and all of the dam AD'S that you get these days on the phones!! there I said it I do not like crap ass adsssssss that keep popping up!
SAMSUNG you spend $1000 to have to keep seeing ad's you did not ask to see
I am kind of thinking of returning this phone to t junk mobile and looking into a HTC phone
Question 2
is anyone working on rooting this sm-n960u phone and twrp??
I see venom has a rom that suppose to work on a ms-n960u so what do you need to do to install that if no root is available
The simple answer is that you can't unlock the bootloader on the US market phone. You haven't been able to do so since the Galaxy S7. I think it likely has a lot to do with KNOX integration for security reasons. The complicated answer is that there were ways to root the S7 by flashing a developer bootloader (engboot or something like that). The catch is that while you could root it, the phone would run like crap, overheat, bad battery life, etc. Some claimed to have decent success with it though. Likely something similar will happen with the Note 9 as well as. An unlocked phone is carrier unlocked, meaning you can activate it on any supported carrier. It has nothing to do with the bootloader.
Long story short, no, you can't unlock the bootloader, no, you can't flash twrp, and you'll find actual development for the US market phone to be essentially non-existent. If that is important to you, return this phone. Coming from rooting and flashing all of my phones prior to the S7, I honestly don't miss it. IMO, there's nothing to be gained, and it's a huge time suck. Life is too short and I'm too busy to spend an evening setting things up for the 5th time, troubleshooting battery life issues, etc. Not to mention that my job related security apps aren't going to work on a rooted phone.
Now, as far as "junk apps" not sure what you mean. These phones are now pretty clean actually, and most things can be uninstalled or disabled from within stock android. And as I found out many times in the past, if something is unable to be disabled, it's probably for good reason.
As far as ads, also not sure what you mean. Web browser ads can be blocked through extensions that Samsung browser supports. In app ads can be eliminated by paying for the app. Really, if you can't afford $3 for an app that you frequently use, I'd question how you can afford a $1000 phone.

Samsung has been locking bootloaders since the S7? It's been a few years. Even when someone found a way to beat it, it was severely limiting to your device. You said you're not new here. This is pretty common knowledge with Samsung devices.

Yes. And they've been working on the S9 too, which still can't be beaten. And a proper way to unlock the S8, without limiting your battery to 80%.
And why exactly is T-Mobile "junk"? Maybe you need a different carrier.

If a color is challenging your sexuality, you have deeper problems than an unrootable phone.

I think your problems go well beyond the color of your boot screen. Seek help. The kind of help you need we're not qualified to provide here. How often do you see the boot logo screen anyway?

There are two types of "unlocked": carrier and bootloader. BestBuy meant carrier unlocked, or the N960U1. The hardware is equivalent to the carrier version (N960U; there's only one model now for all the carriers), and the only software difference is that it doesn't come with the carrier bloat. Same hardware and firmware means it supports B71. However, it cannot be bootloader unlocked.
You have two options if you want a bootloader unlock: the N9600 or the N960F. Neither supports B71, but both do support B66. Remember, B71 isn't all that important yet. It's only been rolled out in a few places and TMO is concentrating more on 5G right now.
The N960F has a mod you can flash to enable TMO WiFi Calling and VoLTE and the other carrier features. I'm running it now and it works fine. It did sort of convert my phone to a Chinese variant, which meant I was stuck with the super aggressive Smart Manager instead of Device Manager, but I modified it to let me use Device Manager again. I might be posting the modified version if I can get permission.
The fact is that, yes, Samsung kind of beat the rooters. However, anyone who really wants to root usually just gets the F or 0 variant, and those who can live without make do with the plethora of non-root tweaks. There are actually quite a few adblockers and package disablers designed for TouchWiz that work without root, such as DNS66 or notSABS.
I don't know anything about flashing modified TouchWiz ROMs on the U variant, but it might be possible. It won't have root though.
Really, if you want a rootable Samsung, go with the N960F. You can get it on Amazon new with Prime for under $900 (without Prime it's $800). It has TWRP and Magisk works fine. If you want WFC PM me so I can share my modified mod (heh). I'll also be working on a set of other miscellaneous modifications to TouchWiz.
SM-N960U
So in old slow world of us phone dummies that try to keep up with all the brain power that this site has been good for in unlocking phones over the years, oh ya and when you all talk that doctors language and write it
to where us dummies have to read and reread over and over again and again to unlock are phones after you all figured it out!!
So what you are saying in the current Samsung world rooting is a thing of the past! Samsung won the hacking war!!! and us pe-ons are mostly stuck with carrier banded phones or unlocked that loses carrier bands and options!
Unless we pay some merc to kidnap you and have some doctor transfer your brain power into are brains so we have the brain power to hack and mod are locked phones then if we are kind have that brain power transferred back to your brains!!!!
I should have stayed with my note 4
oh ya my man hood is just fine they hang lower then yours but that happens with old age how low??
it is great with the younger ladies big is a big deal today
like older ladies with big you know what age affects them to and the younger guys can not stop looking
