Do not buy mate 10.. Or anything by huawei for that matter - Huawei Mate 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

The cliche of Chinese products being flawed is unfortunately extending even to well known brands like Huawei which I was hoping wouldn't be the case.
Not long ago I returned yet another dysfunctional piece of kit from a Chinese company and I'm on the verge of returning my Mate 10.
If I knew better I'd also return my Mate 9.
The Mate 9 has had a lot of issues (GPS for example) and for me, ruining my holiday, the random inability to change network settings to allow data roaming. Only a back up and hard reset which took the best part of a day worked.
Now the Mate 10 has the well documented horrific flaw of not updating widgets. What's worse is there is COMPLETE silence from Huawei over this issue despite repeated attempts through various channels for a response by me.
My phone is pretty much unusable. Widgets are the crowning glory of Android and the reason I jumped ship from iPhone and stayed. Without reliable updating widgets the phone is little more than a brick.
With my two experiences with Huawei phones I can categorically say that they are just unreliable sub-par products sadly.
My Samsungs have all had hardware issues (battery related), btu at least whilst they were intact they worked flawlessly as advertised, fit for purpose. The Huaweis are not even getting to the stage to be used enough for the hardware to fail as they are just not fit for purpose - far too buggy.
I hope I never touch a Huawei product again and can only hope that the competitors build phones with specs good enough to compete.

ok

Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps the 10 Pro is different.
For me and for many others (check the threads) this is a big deal that is as yet unresolved even with yesterday's update.

No problems here with my Mate 10.
Using Huawei phones since 2013 and no plans to change yet.

Hehe I could do, but I don't hate Huawei really, I just wouldn't recommend people buy their products based on my (and a whole multi-page threadful of) experiences on the flaws with this phone and Huawei's comically bad response to it, which so far seems to be "if widgets do't work that's not our fault - they are third party apps - you wouldn't buy a car and put a truck engine in it so why are you installing widgets?"... no BS, check out the thread. They are ridiculous. But nowhere near as Apple and their deliberate slowing of phones. My Mate 9 actuall gets faster with use - exactly as Huawei claims., They do do some stuff right!

The widget updating issue is frustrating, but rooting (as I explained in the thread) solves the issue by letting you freeze the responsible system app. You may not want to root -- and I agree that you shouldn't have to root to fix this issue -- but you might be a much happier camper if you did.

Mate 10 pro here and no problem with my widgets.

Not sure which Widgets you use, but it's mainly the scrolling types that freeze up.

Ok. No scrolling widget. Will try my mail widget later.

Had a p9 since they first came out and now a mate 10 pro. Best phones I have had and don't see any of those issues. Neither of them were rooted either.

No problem on my mate 10 pro. It's strange this message. Just now that the all patriotic America has fear of other smartphone maker. There aren't just apple or samsung...

Ah... it's such a big thread it's got to 12 or 13 pages now (yes guys.... this is a big problem and no i'm not the only one) that I must've missed your solution. Every solution' has come back a couple of days later with "no sorry the problem persists". I'm open to rooting if need be I'm just scared to do it largely because mine is a CHinese one with an international ROM put on it, I have no idea how that will pan out. Or how it will affect other aspects of EMUI. Might be going down a rabbithole there... might be best to return it and buy... well... there's nothing else that comes close to this sadly Grrr.

[Q] Any issues with Chinese version?

I am thinking of ordering the enhanced 64GB model from a Chinese seller (ebay or aliexpress). This would be the Chinese model. The sellers state that before shipping they install a multi-language ROM and Google Play, and that it will work no problem on my network (Canada).
Does anyone have experience with ordering such a phone? I have looked at the relevant threads on the forums of other Huawei phones and there seems to sometimes be problems with notifications and Chinese bloatware. I am also unclear whether I can expect to receive future OTA updates?
AFAIK at the moment a P9 Chinese version distribution has not yet been announced... and for the P9 the official availability is tomorrow 16th April.
The P9/P9 Plus presentation has been initially dedicated only to the European market, also prices where indicated in Euro, even if that event was held in London...

all I can say is, even with the Chinese ROM, you can get all the google stuff without issues, with the exception being Now on Tap because the Home button is mapped to Huawei's own voice assistant.
i did have some issues with notifs on the Mate 8 but its since received at least 3 updates. My P9 is too new for me to notice any issues

re: bloatware, it's possible to remove up to 90% of that stuff through "HiApp" - huawei's replacement for google playstore ( which is also where you download all the google stuff)

That's great - thanks. My P9 is currently on its way so that's reassuring. I am not bothered about Now on Tap.
Presumably HiApp is in Chinese itself? Is it challenging to navigate around it?

it isn't in Chinese.. Once you've chosen English in your first setup step, all system apps show up in English. with the exception of bloatware. I believe there's a guide here on xda some place teaching folks how to download all the google stuff too. basically you'll need google play obviously, google contacts sync and google calendar sync. these are the basics you need to grab off HiApp. Then you can start using Google Playstore as normal to setup account etc
permissions are important as they are very strict and sometimes restrict first, and never ask later. be sure to check there often. Enjoy!
Just Got Mine Yesterday!
My P9 from a shop on aliexpress just came yesterday... and oh yes, it is pretty awesome! Going to use it a couple days and plan on doing a extensive comparison review to my LG G5 in my series of review called "Some Guy's Review..." I did one comparing LG G5 to the S7 Edge and people seemed to appreciate it... I have no brand loyalty so it a pretty honest review IMO
I try to sum up the general user / pro-user experience... what most people run into and care about.... plus stuff I always look for that are my "musts" for things I do in my daily life...
Not getting deeply into it, here's a quick 12-hour impression:
1. Design - It's a pretty phone, I got mine in Gold because the 64GB / 4GB only comes in Gold in China (EVA-AL10 Version is Chinese Version of EVA-L29 International Dual SIM). Let's say a Sony Xperia Z5 and an Iphone had a wild sexual encounter.... the result is a Huawei P9 (Basically an all metal Z5)
2. Snappiness - This phone rocks... didn't slow down even during setup... have yet to notice it heat up either! Have to put it through my grueling non-scientific testing of playing Clash Royale... hahaha. Really though, I won't do a AnTuTu or anything like that because those tests are pretty much meaningless to real world experience usage. Hope to have more later
3. Camera - have yet to take a "real" picture with it... tried it out, seems to have a lot of custom settings and a really good "pro" mode. more to come
4. Battery - seems spot on to all recent Huawei Phones, big, long lasting (that's what she said.... :silly: :good
5. EMUI - I am actually a fan of EMUI... especially with another launcher laid over (I use a HTC Sense Launcher Port). The amount of customization may annoy the regular user... but coming from having a Huawei Mate 8, I understand what you need to do to get everything working like you like. I will give more details later if it suffers from the "sleeping sickness" as I call it... this is where due to all the great battery customizations Huawei throws in, certain app notifications stop working after awhile because the app goes into hibernation and never comes out... time will only tell.
Look for a review probably Monday or Tuesday! I may even do a 3-way just for fun....!!! :good: :highfive: (3-way review... get your mind out of the gutter... hahaha)
I received my eva-dl00 yesterday. (Chinese Dual-Sim 32GB) from Ibuygou.com
Everythings seems to be ok, but Contact Syncing is not working. Any hint?
First impression: Nice phone, very solid quality! But coming from Vanilla....i don´t like EMUI.
Maybe i have to get used to it.
But the P9 with Stock Android would be awesome!
How are u finding notifications inflow? They come on time or with delays?? IMs like Whatsapp Telegram etc giving instant notification even when phone sleeps for 30 plus mins?
Seems to be ok. But it is only a first impression. Could be wrong.
Has anyone from Europe tried if the dual sim works for Chinese version ?

I just got mine today. EVA-AL10. Beautiful phone. Works with cricket no problem... i was trying it out with my verizon sim didnt work. Seems to work well, but some of the stuff are in chinese like browser. Slowly removing the bloat and adding other software to it.
what did everyone end up doing when they first receive the phone? I factory reset it and downloaded google play store from hi app. I needed contacts sync and calendar sync so i downloaded from apk mirror. I downloaded gmail and everything. Its been a while since i came back from droid. I was with apple for a while. Last droid I had was a htc evo. Can't seem to get my contacts on this phone.

I've always been of the mind that people are more likely to post to complain than otherwise. You rarely see, "hey, this is great!" .. I think it is often assumed that posting those kinds of comments add nothing to the discussion, so people don't do it...

Agreed. I see what you did there.
If it turns out to be true and even if they they just push it to those who oped in for soak test and whatnot and not a full out release in the next few weeks i am happy with Lenovo and this phone. I love what Lenovo did with the phone. I said updates will make or break it and i was scared about that when they said they could not commit to the security patches. But were getting those patches and have a word on the update so far so good. Hope they keep it up. This is the best phone out all around.
I'll still believe it when I see it. Moto has really been sucking badly on updates the last few years.

I agree 100% the funny part is I decided I needed a non samsung device as soon as I saw that lil wayne commercial that had him dumping champagne on the phone. I told coworkers that wanted the Note 7 prior to the release to get this phone instead because Samsung spent far too much for lil wayne for proper research and development, they all made fun of me...until the note started exploding.

Off topic but the issue is simple with the Note 7. I checked this my self. But its not cheap for them and the "Fixed" ones were not fixed and there was no way for them to fix it.
Simple version. The IC samsung chosen to handle the monitoring of the voltage for the battery was the cheapest they could find. That being said they can be way off in terms of calibration. The note 7 i had charged my battery to 4.9v. Phone would read 4.405v but a fluke on the batt reads 4.921v. And that is dangerous. So for all i know they could be charging to 5+ volts and no wounder they are bursting into flames. Issue has nothing to do with the battery and changing it wont do a thing. Its an issue with the ic on the board. And the IC has been used in other things that handle li-ion and li-po related charging and also caused problems on them.
Back on topic.
So we get 7.0 before the end of the year. Im guessing November. So far so good on the updates. But im wondering if they are going 7.0 or just going to jump to 7.1. Chances are no 7.1 that fast but so far the updates have been good. And the moto mod updates have been amazing. I would like to see 7.0 by Nov. 17th. But we prob wont see the roll out start until the end of Nov.

Not that I'm aware of. I've done plenty of soak tests for previous Moto devices and I got invites for soak tests for the camera and projector (which I don't have either), but I never got one for the phone. The update just popped up for me last night.
So far the only Nougat issues I'm having is the fact that my Ambient Moto Display no longer works. Slightly annoying, but it could be worse.

Great that means it's a general release!
Do a hard reset, it's always recommended to do a hard reset after a major update for optimal performance and user experience.
Strike my last statement. I just got it working. I need up just clearing the data for the Moto app and set it up again. Moto Display seems to work perfectly fine now.

Have started getting phantom notifications. The phone vibrated, lock screen lights up but nothing there.
Have done a reset as always do after update.

"This kind of behaviour".....the type of behaviour standard in Pie you mean? It's not a bug just a stupid place to put the settings.
And as for the serious problem! How was it serious where the latest update is 1:1 identical to the one I sideloaded and some people got as standard??????

Ask Nokia then, i only got the service update, so something is going on there. They have pulled the update because problems, now they are sending it again wich have no sense at all and now they are sending also another update only with security update. I don't know. Happy anyway that is not a bug!

You are right. It makes no sense what they do with the updates. Being late, I can understand that, but having 3 different versions of updates for the same phone is crazy (it is kind of the same thing of what they do with the phones versioning numbers: 7, 7+, 7.1, 7x and now 8 which is actually 8.1 - mad)
Anyway it looks like their focus is on releasing more phones than optimize the released ones. I think in the 2 years they were banned from releasing phones after the transfer from Microsoft, they developed the phones and they are releasing them now every 2nd month.
Sorry for the long post, I had to let out some of the steam.
Seems a common feeling with most Nokia users.
Something that baffles me is that the media such as android authority and others keep praising the company and recommending them as superb phones. That bit is true but nobody seems to be picking up that it's not really Android One without regular updates.
Anyway, I'm ranting now. Maybe we need a ranting thread. :silly:

That is s great idea!
I think we all feel a little bit cheated. Thinking at it though, it is only the Pixels and Essential phone (don't think OnePlus has it) that have November security patch.
And the phone is a very good one (hardware at least).
This is it. All steam is out.

(Q) EMUI 10, August 9th apparently. Anyone seen any leaks?

By all accounts EMUI 10 is close to dropping for Huawei devices, bringing an overhaul of visual changes.
Anyone have any leaks or images to share?
Be nice to get rid of that bloody settings screen for literally anything else.
Hopefully it'll be lighter and less bloated with easier customisations.
Or is that asking too much
Update 10/09/19
https://9to5google.com/2019/09/09/emui-10-road-map/amp/
P20 pro will receive their update in 2020 which seems like a million miles away but it'll come around, least it's happening I suppose.
Got a small update today 1.74MB
Wasn't the big update apparently..
Has anyone received emui 10 yet?
Beta program starts September 8th.
Android Q, EMUI 10.
So they made an announcement that they were going to make an announcement??
Jesus.

Emui 10? For P20 Pro in august? Good one
Jokes aside. I don't think we'll see beta release by october.

Nvm. I got the update but can't download it through mobile data. Any way to fix this?

For beta don't know but P20 pro is on the list to get it

P20 pro is of course in the official list.
There was no doubt in my mind that it will get it.
Once it's released, firmwares will drop on halab and FF..
Then I'll just be grabbing it and installing it

Of course it will be. It's within the 2 year life cycle.

Ok let me rephrase it. I know Charlotte will eventually get emui 10. It's been officially stated by Huawei.
Beta program is a different story though. Not all devices that get official release are part of beta program available for global users.

(I'd just woke up pal, was super early and eyes hadn't opened quite just then, was just trying to avoid a crap thread full of negativity, but yea I get you )
Tbh the info out there is pretty sketchy at best.
The only device previewing it in China is the p30 pro. Which there is a video of.
I was so interested in the dark modes personally.
And ironically, I've just found a bunch of 9.1 emui themes which are actually working really well and are even theming 3rd party apps like WhatsApp, colours aren't awesome and there's no real editor of any kind but it's a step towards what I'm after..
Looking at the emui 10 video (which is probably a late version and will look identical to the final)
They've retained those bloody colourful icons in settings, the launcher is the same? I don't use it but thought they may have changed it.
Guess we'll see. Looks like they're going down the same route Samsung went down for literally the same reasons (OS too heavy)

No idea pal, but it's only a year old so I can see it getting some love.
I guess we'll see.
Personally I think it'll be included.

Yea it was a nap mate. China / Huawei were getting a bit big a bit too quick for Google / USA, so Trump taxed their ass a bit, but overall Huawei was never going to eliminated from selling devices.
They just wanted to tax them a bit and let them know who's the ***** and who's not.
There's too much money involved to call it a day.
That being said, huawei seem to have had some insight into this as there is no way theyve constructed a full OS in that time, it must have been pre planned in order to have got as far as they have..
Being smart, they're protecting themselves..
I think one other thing it does mean tho, bootloaders are staying locked down.
It would take a very strange set of circumstances to turn that decision over.
Just can't see that ever happening.

Got an update today for the T800

After so many years:l, so strange:
It's T800XXU1CVG1/T800OXA1CVG1
what's new
Gps stability had been improved
That's it.
I'm going in, wish me luck
I got that too - a little suspicious. How was it? Did you do a security scan after?
Got it late at night I thought I was dreaming haha.
Installed it, haven't noticed anything different so far, though of course it's not my main tablet anymore so I don't use it as much as I used to.

This update scares me and more with Samsung... Could you tell me how it works since you updated it? Especially the battery that could well be that Samsung has sent it to kill it hahaha

No change whatsoever. Battery life is terrible but just like before. It's the original battery so you get the idea.
Thanks for the comments. I got this update a few weeks ago as well and kept postponing it. I mean, it's great that Samsung pushes updates after all this time, but the changelog is utterly useless: it's the same generic description that came with a similarly unexpected update a year or so ago, so it's impossible to tell what it will _really_ do to your device. My friends joked it's probably a mercy kill.
So yeah, I can't help but feel somewhat suspicious -- especially when you see a "GPS stability update" 2 years in a row in an 8 year old device. It almost seems like the changelog is copy-pasted from a template and designed to convince people into just installing whatever. Who wouldn't want more stable GPS, right?
Anyway, may as well do it. If it installs ads or something, I suppose I can always switch to a free / open system instead.
very likely the only change Samsung did was to GPS, to address GPS week number rollover

Hahaha, your friends know well what Samsung is capable of doing... I still haven't installed the gps update, I have installed greenify without root but with the paid version that allows me to force stop system apps and so on with a touch I don't get that update so many times anymore. My Tab S 8.4 I changed the battery 4 years ago (New power 99) for 60e and I still get 8 hours of screen watching netflix 100% of the time. I'm worried about one thing... how long will netflix continue to support this fabulous tablet?
