Connecting XDA to mp3 players??? - MDA, XDA, 1010 Accessories

Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question but is it possible to connect the XDA to a mp3 player so that you could use it as an extra memory device. There are many players out there now with 20+ Gb of memory that would be great for storing movies on and somehow outputting and playing on the XDA.
Any ideas or comments?
Thanks.

In short the answer is NO because the xda doesnt support input/output through its SD slot. Just looks like your gonna have to buy a bigger SD card!!

Class 4 vs Class 10 Micro SD

I want to get a 16gb Micro SD but i dont know which one to get.
Class 10 costs 130
Class 4 costs 38
any suggesttions?
ALSO, how big is a movie using the Nook Color presets ? (800x480) 1100Kbit?
Get this card:

It is the best card for the money.
i live in singapore , but would you think a class 4 would be as good as class 10?

IIRC, about 1.5GB, depending on length. Although I don't store them on the NC, I just have a web server and stream them. Only time I store any on the NC itself is if I'm going on a trip and won't have access to my home wifi. For that I have a 32 (edit, oops) 16gb class 4 which works just fine.
the class only states the lowest speed a card is rated for, it doesn't mean that it can't be faster. all the sandisk 16gig class 2 cards i've bought all are tested to run at class 6.
i don't think you'd really see a difference unless you copy large single files or run benchmarks. bunches of small files may sustain the same speed on both cards.
That said, if you can get both at the same price i'd go for the higher class rating as long as it's from a reputable manufacturer.

You can get a free MP4 streaming server from tools4movies.com. Seems to work fine for me. Just install it, start it, go to folders, add your movies folder, select all movies, then hit the little lightning bolt button at the bottom to convert them to streaming MP4s (or verify that they all already are). It's very simple which is why I like it since I don't know a damn thing about web servers.
I use DVDCatalyst to convert (from the same site), but I can't get the 'Enable streaming' option to work, so I do it separately.

Thanks guys , ill use my 4gb one then if i really need the upgrade ill buy It L
Seriously, dvdcat is pretty nice. Its very easy to use, and rock solid. I've had it converting fit literally days working on some 400 hours worth of video. It also makes good use of multicore even when only doing 1 DVD. Does full length in 15 or 20 minutes on my 2.66 ghz quad core.
You can also just pick your device and it figures out the details for that device, which makes it easy for idiots like me.

Poor video playback performance on XXJVK?

I've recently noticed that I'm getting terrible video performance on XXJVK. Although the video doesn't seem to lag, there is obviously audio / video sync problems.
I'm noticing this with the stock video player as well as on Mobo and mVideoPlayer. Until recently I didn't notice this problem.
I'm running Stock XXJVK with the Stock Kernel, running top from adb doesn't reveal anything interesting, and I've checked that stagefright is disabled.
Anything else I can look for?
Try running a movie on internal then external memory because it could be a memory problem. And external mem cards need to be class 6 to run hd movies good. Alot of retailers dont tell you this and sell you class 2 cards which are rubbish specially on ebay.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. All my videos are on the internal SD card actually, the always have been. It's just recently that I've been having an issue with the video performance.

[Q] SD Card Upgrade

I'm looking forward into upgrading my SD Card, right now it's the default CLASS 2 with 2gb. I pretend to buy a 16gb class 10 one, from Adata.
But I need to know some things first. The only reasons that I want to upgrade is to get more space to install apps, place musics and maybe expand my RAM a little.
So, is it possible to expand my ram? I don't want performance upgrade, it's just that I tend to multitask a lot of programs and my memory runs out really fast.
If so, how much more memory I can allocate on my SD?
Same for apps.
How much big can my apps partition be?
I saw that the recommended limit is something around 1.2/1.3gb, but is there a safe way to expand a little bit further? Or would it make the phone too much unstable?
And also, is it really worth it to upgrade my SD to a CLASS 10 one with 16gb? Or is it just a waste of money?
Thanks for the support and excuse me if I'm asking on the wrong section/way. I found somethings about it but there was nothing too much concrete. :/
EDIT
I just flashed my X8 with the latest firmware and baseband, as pc companion didn't want to install the baseband ..15 nor the newest drivers. Also installed the CM7, dualtouch and all that crap. It already installs apps to the SD and I've noticed a small slowdown on app startup. Would a class 10 sd soft it out?
Up to 200MB on SWAP partition, up to 2GB on apps EXT3/4 (any1 have so many of them???) rest for music/videos etc.
I have made a guide for partitioning the SD with ext+swap (you need AlfsKernel+GDX)
Look my signature
Thanks. But just another question. Is it really necessary to have a Class 10 SD card, or would Class 2 (the default one) slow things down while using swap?
Edit:
Also, a class 10 sd card is way too much expensive for me. I found a 16gb one, class 4 but it's SDHC. Will my X8 read a SDHC?
Everything above (and including) 4GB is sdhc, so yes, it reads them fine. About speed, yes it's important, apps will load faster.. but never amazingly fast. The X8 is slow nowadays, don't expect awesome results. If you are used to class 2 speeds and you buy a class 10 card then yes, you will notice improvement.. Not that much with a class 4. Do you really need a 16GB card? Maybe a 8GB class 8 or 10 would be better if you don't need that much space.
About adding more ram, just forget it

I got almost 20gb of just music on my computer, full discography of bands and all. Basically, 90% of the sd will be dedicated to music then But maybe i buy a 8gb one, i just need to stop being lazy and copy only the musics that i want instead of CTRL+A, CTRL+C, CTRL+V it all. Thanks for the help by the way.
So class 6 sdcard is enough for x8?

The bigger the class, the more performance you get, so you would obviously want to purchase class 10 if you can afford it buy the largest class you can get, though I would suggest *at least* 6
But will a high class type make my.device slow in working??
Sent from my LG-P970 using XDA App
And i have also heard dat larger class type eats lots of power...
Is it true??

What will you do with your sdcard?
To save music and document, a class 4 is enough. (this is what I use)
If you want to move most of your application to your sdcard get a higher class.
SanDisk make great sdcard if you don't care about money. Kingston is fine. Adata class 10 are great for the price.

I Have a Samsumg 8Gb Classe 10 and I have a grate improve in the performance in the applications that I have in the sd.
I don't feel any extra consuming in the battery...

This is not true! The class says something about the min performance, it says nothing about the max performance. It is possible a class 6 beats a class 10 card.
So my advice check some tests, where they compare each sd.

get a class 4.
There's a reason why most of the Windows Phone 7s uses an internal class 2 microsd card.
For writing many files onto an sdcard at the same time (lets say while using an app) it would be faster the lower the class.
But obviously a higher class would let you write a single file faster, but with a class 4 you could easily record HD video on your Optimus Black with no lag at all.
Save the money and get a class 4.
Thanks guys for ur suggestions..

I'd prefer the 10 if i were you,and I have a 16gb c10 right now
Higher class = no problem till now
I't classy enough though

Never heard about higher class card using more power. Unless you keep allot of apps on the sd there shouldn't be issues. The higher the class the shorter will be the response time and higher the read write speed.
As for video keeping in mind that for full HD 6Mbs is enough. Which means that with luck class 4 might be ok. Likely it won't.
I have good results with hd video class 4 on Bada phone, but my OB hiccups with class 6 ( that's still to be confirmed if it is software or hardware issue).
If price is not a issue get the highest possible 10 is about optimal for phone higher than that is overkill.

U wrote so many stupid things that I cannot respond em all, so I will respond one: the only reason why W7 phones use class 2 is that those cards are cheap as autumn leaves.
"with a class 4 you could easily record HD " compare the bitrate of full HD stream with recording performance of class 4 card !!!!!!!!!!!!
euphorcimoron - take in mind one straightforward experience which can obviuously can be seen when You start Your OB ( but some x%$#@* here are to blind to see that ): multimedia files are scanned each time You boot the phone. More files -more time, faster card- less time.
So: get the card as fast as possible: better video recording, apps installed on SD work faster, faster copying of multimedia files into Your phone by any connection ( USB,WiFi), faster booting and so on.
Is there a limit ad to what the OB can actually utilize? I didn't buy a 10 because the sales guy didn't think the phone would have the read write speeds to need that high of a class?

one thing about this, the guy didn't want your money
just for info, i lurked many time in here and found many members asking these :
a. "i flashed CM ROM build # and i can't install my apps, but when i change the sd card, the problem is solved, help ?"
b. "what class ?"
a. "4"

i have no problem like this till now with the 10
Haha, btw if you can afford buying class 10, go for it. CM uses ext4 partition afaik, requires class 6 as minimum to work flawlessly

I use 16Gb class 4 and my videorecording feels like 15fps instead of 30fps. I don't know if it's a storage class issue or not because the same thing happens even if I use lower resolution. Probably a CM7 issue?

Depends on the bitrate bro, class 4 theoritically have 4Mbps so if your video recording has high bitrate it will slowdown the performance.
Also afaik CM7 has a bug about HD recording.

[Q & Discussion]Is SWAP really useless?

Lets face the facts guys. Our Galaxy Ace has very little RAM as compared to other devices currently on the market. Switching between apps is a pain in the ****. So I would like to ask is SWAP really useless as concluded by some members or its good for the phone. You can also list out experience with using SWAP & what kind of brand and class of microSD card you use here. I now personally do not use SWAP but I did b4, I have a class 4 32GB transcend microSD card that comes with life time warranty (I purposely put the warranty so I can also ward off those whom say it may wear out the card etc, what I want to find out is PERFORMANCE)
I search all over xda and all I got was some bits and pieces of answers here and there so was hoping to conclude everything right here in one place.
it makes the phone reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally slow. Happened to me.
it depends on ur swappiness setting (0~100)
set to 0 will disable swapping
set to 100 will make the system keep making cache and store them into your swap partition
*well, i'm still a noob, so just take my answer as a reference and if u want to know them more clearly, then ask uncle google
***
btw, too large linux swap partition is not needed, 32mb /64 mb will be enough for galaxy ace
If you use a lot of multitasking, swap will allow you to keep the apps data in memory for longer (no more reloading old web pages when browsing through lots of Windows)
It WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR PHONE, always (even with class 10 SD cards). The swap's new ram is much slower to read/write to SD card than the ram in your internal memory.
Swap will eat through your SD card and wear it out much faster. This isn't so bad with a life warranty and considering the low prices of SD cards. It's a pain in the nuts though, if you don't keep a regular backup of your SD card when the day it dies arrives.
I tried Swap with a class 4 SD Card, not really useful, so, I removed. You will try it if you have a class 10 SD
thanks for the reply guys
I would recommend swap only if you are a gamer. It will smooth out some games like nova or bia 2 or dead space or mass effect 3. Not saying that it will make the game lag free but it helps
