ipaq 3850 downgrade from WM2003 - Off-topic

Can I use any of the tools available here, or are there others I can use to downgrade an ipaq 3850 from wm2003, (upgraded by usb bootloader), the problem is that the ipaq wireless pack just will not work with this configuration, when I try to flash an earlier rom I get the error because 3850 isnt supposed to have WM2003. Any help greatly appreciated.

Download the BIOS version 1.20 on this site http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/HandheldiPAQ/us/locate/71_2594.html
You should extract the CAB file and place it on your Pocket PC. Then execute it, after it's complete you will be back to Pocket PC 2002. By the way can you post the 2003 ROM up here, I would like to run a Kitchen on it and see if we can customize it. Possibly even correct the problems your currently having. Hope this helps!!

How do I upload a file? The wm2003 works fine but it seems to have a problem with the wireless gsm/gprs sleeve, the sleeve attempts to initialise but stalls, I think it is even corrupting the files in rom/ram on the sleeve as I have had to open the case twice to disconnect the battery after trying to use it with the 3850 wm2003, it then wont be seen by any other ipaq, weird.

Hi cruisin-thru !
Try this:
In order to downgrade to PPC2002 you must follow this : Download the 2002 ROM and extract the ROM file. This ROM file is 16 bytes bigger than the 2003 one. The 16 bytes difference in the 2002 ROM is header information. With a HEX editor strip the first 16 bytes. Both 2003 and 2002 files are now equal in size. Rename the 2002 file to the same name as the 2003 file, and follow the same instructions as you used for upgrading to 2003.
Regards,
Sebi

You can post a link to it or I can give you an FTP address to post it to. I currently have the 3870 ROM and do not want to mess up the Bluetooth stack on it, the 3850 ROM does not have this built in so it should be easier to work with using the XDA kitchen. As for the download from the link I gave you, apparently the FTP server at HP is down at this time. :?

I have downloaded that 1.2 rom, I have copied the unpacked files to my pocket pc, none of them will execute, what is it am I supposed to do.
Oh by the way, the rom file I have in the 3850 does have bluetooth features.

The extracted files should contain a file with a .CAB file extension, this is the one you want to execute. As for the 2003 ROM I'll see if I can find one for the 3835 series since they shouldn't have the Bluetooth stack in the ROM. Hope this helps!

There is no cab file contained within the 1.2 file, do you have a link to anywhere I can get the file you are referring to.?

I found a 2002 rom cab file, I put it on my ppc and it says "This rom update is for ppc version 3.0.11178 but this device is pocket pc version 4.20.13100. Installation cannot procedd."

Sounds like the only way to do this is a SD card install, unfortunantly, I'm not sure how the Ipaq accomplishes this.

I am at a loss how to revert to original 3850 rom, I have another 3850 here that I can get a backup rom from, but no way of putting it back in the other 3850 that has been flashed with WM2003. I looked at the Asset viewer and it says my wm2003 ipaq 3850 has not got a color screen either, I think maybe this rom wm2003 is for 3870 bluetooth version :?

Hi !!!
Try this !!! It is working !!! I try it, I use it !!!

Thanks for that Sebi, but the rom for WM2003 was a lot bigger than the 2002 rom, the rom I need is 31.745 kb the rom I flashed is 32.768 kb, does that make any difference? I think the rom I flashed is probably the 3870 rom as the bluetooth stuff is in there.

For anybody interested, I managed to downgrade ok. I downloaded an upgrade file from HP, ran the program with a "normal" 3850 in the cradle, it asked did I want to upgrade or backup existing rom, I did a backup. I then ran the program again, when it asked me if I wanted to backup, upgrade or restore, I told it I wanted to restore the file that I had just backed up, it then told me to put my ipaq in bootloader mode, instead of putting the "normal" ipaq in bootloader, I switched machines for the one I needed to downgrade, I put this in bootloader mode, put it in the cradle and away it went. I now have a 3850 running wm2002 instead of wm2003 which for some reason doesnt want to operate with ipaq wireless pack.

You did what I was going to suggest to you. FYI there are no WM2003 drivers for the GSM/GPRS Wireless Pack.

Historical Product Need Some Help !
Gentlemen, knowing these posts were years ago. Appreciate if you guys still have the PPC 2003 for Ipaq 3850 or tell me where to get it. I have one in the store room and would like to upgrade it for my kid.

Recovering Extended ROM

I was playing with the Disk on Chip resize utility because I am contemplating upgrading to WM2K5 now it is available. I used the Disk on Chip resizing utility to resize my extended ROM to 10Mb from its default, but I didn't check that I had got a good backup of all the CABs, so now when I unhide my extROM, I see an empty folder. I thought I hadn't unlocked it, but when I try to unlock it, I get
ERROR: FL_IOCTL_BDTL_HW_PROTECTION - A device attached to the system is not functioning
I can however write to my extROM folder
I could just resize extROM back to 16Mb & reflash (I'm using imate 1.40.176), but I'd like to learn something from my mistakes & hopefully just put back the CABs into the extROM. The problem is I don't have the CABs, just the nbf files. How can I extract CAB files from NBFs?
OK, I'm stupid
I shoulda just looked on the wiki in the extended ROM kitchen, downloaded the RAR file of the appropriate ROM, unpacked it, copied the files into the extended_ROM folder on my BA & tested using a hard reset
Oh yeah, that's just what I did - it worked fine & I now have my extROM sized to fit what I need rather than the default. Apart from saving empty space, I removed skype from the extROM; I can't see the point of having it when I already have a perfectly good phone

Extract files from Extended rom (on the PC)

I've extracted the nk.nbf file from O2's upgrade Rom, and have then extracted the following files:
80040000-OS_0.nb
9b000000-Extension.nb
96000000-GSM_0.nb
91000000-SPL_1.nb
etc...
Now i know that the cab files i want exist within the 9b000000-Extension.nb file (as i am guessing that this is the Extended Rom). But i can't figure out how to extract the cab files (or all the files) from within in it.
I've searched around, and it's helped me get this far, but i can't seem to figure out how to get past this point. Can anyone tell me how to do this on my PC.
Many thanks.
I know someone in here can give me a quick answer to this one. All i want to do is get some cab files out of an O2 extended rom file on my computer (i can't use the extended rom unlocker on my pocket pc because i am currently using the crossbow OS, which doesn't include the O2 extended rom).
Thanks for any help.
If you are using orwell's wm6 your extended rom is probably still on your phone unless you wiped it off.
look for a software called winimage & load the extrom.nb file then u will see the contents.

Extracting CABs from a ROM

Anyone on here know how to Extract a CAB file from a ROM/Extended ROM? ive been trying to find something about this on here and cant seem to find anything that pertains to it. there are several programs that are included in roms and extended roms that i have and i wold like to be able to put them on my 8125 with the ROM i have now. Thanks in Advance!
Corey
If you already have a cabfile that resides in the extended rom the process is quite easy... just use total commander and copy the file from there to a place on your device where you can later use it...
If you don't have a cabfile but just a program, say arcsoft mms composer that's already integrated into the rom, the process gets a little more complicated, but not impossible. You will, however, need to know all the files that the program uses, dll's, imagefiles, exe's and registry posts, copy them from rom to your windows pc and from there use a program like ce cab manager to create a cabfile for it (if you want. you can merely transer all the files and registry posts to your current rom without creating a cab)

cool, thanks for the info, what program do i need to use to unpack the NBF so i can access the files? I tried to use the one in the wiki (typho5) but i cant seem to get it to work.
for dumping rom's read through this thread
You'll probably want to read it all and I'm sure that it wont make that much sense to begin with but it'll come to you
For converting a nbf to nb files use:
Code:
typho5.exe -x nk.nbf
typho5.exe -x nk.nbf does NOT make it a .nba file!
It extracts the contents of the rom (OS, Extended Rom, Radio, Splash Screen, IPL/SPL) into .nb files.
The Extended Rom file can be opened with WinImage.
Molski
Thanks...i just checked out that thread..looks like ive got some studying ahead of me lol thanks for the help.
thanks Molski, you must have posted that just after i read the post above yours lol. thanks for the info i have another question for you here though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291847 As smart as you guys are im sure theres a reason you havent done it though

Backing up carrierdb.pxp...

Seeing as my hopes were dashed yet again today for the release of the AT&T WM6 ROM I've decided to bite the bullet and load the ROW ROM and be done with it. I just want to make sure that I can back up the carrierdb.pxp file so that I can restore the auto settings once I have WM6 up and running. I understand that this file is in the EXT ROM but the EXT ROM unlocker floating around seems to be for WM6 only.
If I am mistaken in my information please feel free to correct me on this. Just want to make sure I will have all features enabled when I am finished.
Thanks in advance,
David

Am I really barking up the wrong tree here?
Could some perhaps just send me/post the carrierdb.pxp from the leaked AT&T ROM?

Thanks for the link, but I already have the leaked ROM. If I could extract the files from the 04_ExtROM.nb file I'd be set. From all the my reading this does not appear to be possible without loading the ROM. Would prefer to just load the ROW ROM instead of going with the leaked AT&T ROM first. All I'd really like is a carrierdb.pxp file for AT&T. I see that someone did post the extracted ExtROM but it contains and extracted carrierdb.pxp, not the packed file. Any way to repack this or just a hint on what to do with the extracted files?
Edit: I see that the pxp files can be extracted as zips.....any chance they can be just rezipped and have the extension changed? Any particular settings that need to be used if it is possible?

Further to this, can we add another carrier in the pxp file? And can we modify the pze file?
The reason why I ask, is Fido merged with Rogers and my Treo 750 shows roaming as there is no GSM network for Fido in the pxp file. (i.e. 302-37)
Okay, I have been running the ATT WM6 leaked version for some time and recently unlocked my device and upgraded to the 2.23 ROW from Palm. Here is what I would recommend you do:
1. Upgrade your device to the ATTWM6 version first.
2. Follow instructions on this site (use the search in this forum) to "mount" the extended ROM. From there you can copy/backup the carrierdb file to your local PC.
3. Unlock your device.
4. Install 2.23 ROW.
5. Re-mount the extended rom and backup the new carrierdb file from the new rom
6. Copy back the carrierdb file from your hard drive obtained from the leaked ATT WM6 install.
Simple - if you know how to do all these things. You WILL have to spend time reading/researching on this forum to learn how to do each step, but this is the process from a macro level.

You betcha. They *are* zip compressed files with a different filename extension. Use the winrar defaults to create.

Problem is the leaked ATT and T rom doesn't have the Fido GSM network in there!

noob question: first bootscreen change

Hi there
re: HTC Himalaya. how do I change the first bootscreen? Pls can you give links to tools and provide instructions.
Cheers
I think what you are referring to is the welcome screen? Perhaps do a search for welcome.96 and see what comes up.
I had it in mind you just made an image the size of the welcome screen image and named it welcome.96.png and then just dragged it into the Windows folder (it will overwrite the original).
Having said that, Google it and find out how to do it exactly, don't take my word for it. But you should have enough information frfom what I have said to find out more.
I see its your First post..Welcome to xda-developers..sspecially for choosing Himalaya
To Change the Splash Screen..follow these steps :
Open any Image Editor
or Choose any Image that is 240*320 In Size
Its format Must be .PNG
and rename it to " welcomehead.96.png " (note : png is the extension )
connects your device via Active Sync or copy the splash screen to your Devices and replace place it in the \Windows Folder..it will ask to over right..Select Yes and You are done
Soft-Reset and Enjoy
PS. Search the Forum for ALOT of welcomeheads
the screen I want to change is the very first one that is shown when the machine is turned on, i.e. it appears as the device is booting up. Hope this makes sense.
Oh I suspect then you are not talking about Welcomehead/Splashscreen. Does the screen you are talking about feature the logo or name of a phone company/service provider? IE Telstra, Optus, Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, etc
yes, that's the one. On booting up it is replaced by the welcome screen, and then the wallpaper. I'm using Ather's 'Dark Edition'
i would like to change this very first image too. I hope someone know how to do it.
Hrmm, not sure how possible it is. I have both the o2 logo on one phone and Telstra on the other which I wanted to remove. I dare say it is part of the radio rom, not the OS rom. Basically, you can flash the Radio to a different version, just as you can flash the Operating System, though some say it is a bit more difficult.
No matter what rom I flash, those logos are always there, so I suspect they are part of the radio rom. I will investigate.
EDIT: Okay this guy has created a program to do it for the Prophet only, but he may be the person to ask as I would suspect he had the general knowledge of how to do it by hand before he created the program.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333194
Thoses two can be changed by editing the ExtRom file (ms_.nbf) from a 2003 Rom..Search the forum for WM2003 Edit in the Himalaya Wiki...i have also uploaded a Clean extrom..just replace the images init and then place it in the folder where your HimaUpgradeUT_noid.exe is and flash as normal
here is the ExtROM file : http://rapidshare.com/files/82299532/ms_.nbf
I think this way was working in WM5
Install extromunlocker
Soft reset
Start
Program
ExtROMTools
Unhid
Unlock
Folder will appear in the root
Inside this folder is the image need to be change
But I traied this extromunlocker cab file in WM6.1, I could not find the Extrom.
Thanks for the method - however, I'm new to this and would appreciate a bit more hand-holding if you don't mind. Can you give a more detailed stepwise method?
TIA
It wont work if u ahve Partitioned your DOC..because that was the Storage where these files were kept
Well ok..just tell me what u cant understand
See here ..
Hi,
as Ather described, I did it successfully last year this way
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=220799&page=12)
as described, I restored my ExtRom with DOC_Restore, took the T-Mobile 1.72 Update (http://xdazone.india372.server4you.d...d.php?id=3373), extracted the ms_.nbf (ExtROM) , changed the splashes with "Windows Mobile 2003 ROM Editor" and updated the ExtROM. Works well.
I'm not sure if the t-mobile extrom could be used for other version of Himalaya than the MDA II.
