XDA1---old GPS receiver and--car kit - MDA, XDA, 1010 Accessories

I hope im not repeating any previous threads but---------
I have an exsisting gps receiver (Global sat BR-305)which i used on my IPAQ 5550. How do i change the wiring (there are some threads on this but not sure if they refer to MY receiver and XDA1). If i bought a universal car mount could this double as a hands free system.
Thanks
PS-Soldering iron is plugged in and smoking away in anticipation.

Once you have the pin/wiring assignment diagram for your gps and the xda carkit it is very easy to match them up. Do you have the diagrams?

No i dont have any diagrams. Couldnt find any for my receiver and therefore not sure what the input plug to the XDA should be wired up as.
Firstly just getting the GPS to plug in to the phone would be good and being able to double as a hands free would simply be a bonus but not essential.

The info you require is here, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/Connectors
a direct comparison chart, all you have to do is the soldering bit.

Wow what a response. Thanks very much for that info-its exactly what i needed . A bit of a coincidence you living in Gloucestershire--you could be my next door neighbour for all i know---LOL
Cheers
Doug

Enclosed is a photo of the wires ready to wire up to the XDA plug. Not sure where they go as some of the info posted already refers to other GPS receivers.
Thanks
Doug

Ok i've sussed it out. There is a connection block that joins all the three cables together (The GPS receiver and the 12v powerplug and the XDA lead). Taking it apart shows the colour changes on the tx and rx wires and then gives a logical colour to the wires that need to be soldered to the XDA lead.
There is an excellent tutorial here:

Thanks to all for the help received since i joined the forum.

Are XDA/iPaq 38.. connectors the same, with the same pin assignment ?
It is just to know if I can use my serial cable for the XDA too.
Thank you about any answer.

No.
Just take a look at the Connector-site....

Thank you VERY much about that.
I come often to this website but did'nt remenbered this very useful section.

XDA II and h2215 Accessories
Do I need to use XDA-iPAQ Connector Converter with the new accessorties for iPAQ h2215/4150, cause iPAQ Connectors are exactly the same size of XDA/XDA II ones and can fit in it ???
I have a lot of h2215 Accessories but waiting for your reply...
I dont know if a converter actually exists, I have rewired ipaq accessories to fit the xda as they may look similar but it has been known to cause hardware damage when a charger for ipaq is plugged into xda. This site carries detailed information about the connecter and the pins that carry all signals and voltage.
Thanks GOD I did not try to use any of them, and thank you very much for your help....
Best regards,,,

Anyone got the Digitraveler to power off cigarette lighter?

I got a digitraveler gps unit for my XDA from a kind US member on the board,
I would be interested to know if anyone has sucessfully powered the unit from a car cigarette lighter ?
How would this be done without too much hassle ? The only problem is that here in the UK there is no radioshack so I can't buy the proper cable.. can the XDA car charger be modified to power the digitraveler aswell ?
I don't mind doing some wiring etc.. as long as its not too complicated.
Cheers
Neil
I use a standard Ipaq car charger/power cord to power the digi, but I also make sure batteries are present as well because it seems to get a much quicker fix that way. I use mine with xda and I get a fix in Tomtom within 10 - 15 seconds now although the first time took a lot longer.
Ahh right, thanks again for helping me out
I've just had a scan through the manual for the digitraveler and it says the power source needed is 6v 100ma. If I nipped down to maplin tomorrow and got one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=031114221402201&moduleno=29132&Products=1 would it work? As it says @ 6V the output is 500ma, or does the unit only take the required amount of power ?
Cheers
Neil
That will be fine.
Cheers mate
PS Just noticed where ur from, i'm from Cheltenham... small world eh?
Just did it on power supply for XDA and GPS....
I posted the original IPAQ cable mod for the Digitraveler.

O2 XDA Car Kit and RS232 connector?????

RE: XDA Car kit supplied by O2 in the UK.
This is a long shot.
My company has supplied O2 XDA(1) and O2 Car kit. I would like to add SAT NAV. Problem is I cannot find out what the RS232 pinouts are on the car kit wiring loom. Apparently the people who manafactured the car kit did/would not make an RS232 cable???? I am reliably informed that "a cable" might be produced next year! The car kit wiring loom has a spare, flat 8 pin connector which I am assured carries the RS232 signals however this source of info would/could not give me the pinouts. Buzzing this connector out with the XDA socket on the cradle, due to the close proximity of pins, is not an easy task for someone as optically challenged as myself plus I've got hands like meat hooks. This 8 pin connector is not one that I would expect to see for this type of job. It is similar to the type of connector found in PC's for connecting serial "D types" to the motherboard although is only one row of pins/sockets.
I know all this is pretty vague but I am an optimist.

Urgent Question: GPS + XDA Charger Cable

I am wiring up a GPS mouse for my Dad's XDA, and I just wanted to make sure it would be ok link off of the XDA's cigarette lighter charger to also provide 5volts to the GPS to power it?
The unit is a Rikaline 6010, will the XDA car charger be able to supply both the xda and GPS ??
Data sheet for GPS here:
http://www.rikaline.com/download/GPS-6010-Manual-E.pdf
Need a reply asap
Cheers
Neil
Should be fine...
Not sure about your specific unit, but I have done exactly this with a Digitraveler GPS mouse, and it works great. Can't imagine the the load would be much different between the two.
Josh
um might work might not :| my dads i converted my dads ipaq 3870's car charger to power his bluetooth gps lol (point being it now isnt wireless lol) and the gps kinda steals all its charge power causing the ipaq to charge then stop charging and the ipaq drains instead
ive ordered a usb gps from ebay and a xda car charger im going to wire them up when they come ill let you know the results just try and see no harm in trying
gaz
It will run off of 5 volts.
8)
i use the rikaline 6010 with tom tom2 software...but it came with the tom tom....2 leads come out of the cig lighter one for the xda and the other for the gps receiver....have a look on e-bay you can buy the leads on there own
Its ok, got it sorted now. It's all powering off the one lighter plug

XDA1 Car Kit

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone can help me? I have an XDA1 and have just bought a car kit which looks great. However I need to connect my haicom 203e gps receiver with PS2 plug. The box says GPS navigation is optional but the instructions give no info as to how to connect it.
I have a funny looking plug coming off the main cable where the antenna connects and figured that may be something to do with it.
Has anyone got any info how to connect GPS to the kit itself
Thanks
I have had exactly the same combination.....
Have to take a look this afternoon, to my links. There was a great review of the car kit, where all the schematas were drawn....
I cut of the original GPS-Connector of the car kt and used a PS/connector to vonnect my Haicom gps.....
Stefan
By the way: My complete set will be at Ebay in a few days..... ;-)
Thanks Stefan that would be great - I take it you had a plug with 8 wires If I knew what the 8 wires did I could wire up the Haicom via a ps2 connector. Its the function of each of the wires that causes me the problem.
