K Jam - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

I would like to have some comments about the KJam Compare with PDA2k   :?:

I think that the PDA2K is a far better unit than the K-Jam as you have a faster processor and you don't have to change screen orientation every time you want to use the keyboard. I think a PDA2K upgraded to WM5 is far better than the K-Jam.

However, BT and especially WiFi on the K-Jam are much better than the PDA2K, so if that's important to you, consider the upgrade. I made the switch back in April and haven't regretted it for a second.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may be better on the K-Jam but you've only got a 200 MHz Processor whereas the PDA2K has a 400 MHz Processor. The screen is much bigger on the PDA2K so for office documents a larger screen makes them easier to read. You also have more memory with the PDA2K. Just some points to consider.

Upgrade 1.42 and ext. rom problem

I upgraded my device to 1.42 eng. but after finished, extended rom files are not installing, device is stopping . Then when i try to install them manuel not working can somene help me
I tested the 1.42 NL version and it worked pretty much ok. Try maybe to upgrade again. I have the Pda2k and I am back to the I-mate 1.40 firmware. I think something went wrong when you updated. Just do it again - it should work.
Posting from the PDA2K.
downgrade
why did you go back to 1.40 from 1.42?
obiesoft:
I didn't like the T-mobile ExtRom and I didn't know how to write to it at the moment.
Also, I thought that the phone app is a bit slow (and I hated the flat skin).
Meanwhile, I got the xdatools and I edited the extrom.
The I-Mate extrom has the autosetup, no config.txt needed. It works pretty well with the 1.13 radio.
Though, I have some problems with the BT and a Motorola HS805 headset. It's crackling all the time. But I think that there's no solution for this problem.
RELOAD, have you flashed again? Did you solve the problem?
1.42
I apologize for not replying earlier. I switched from WM5 to the 1.42 Rom and i like it so far. It is so much faster and responsive compared to WM5, keyboard works well and bluetooth is ok. I also get the Crackling noise, i use HBH 300. I have been seeing threads about an I mate Bluetooth fix but all the links to it are broken, so i guess that is what we need now. Until i test it, i will not know. I understand what you mean by the flat look, WM5 looks better but it is not as good as WM2003 for regular use, as for looks, just switch up themse.

I'm sorry for the delayed answer, but I'm not always on the forums...
I only heard about an I-mate patch, but if you mean this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=14277, it's old (2004) and I've seen only a few people asking for the files.
I am now running the i-mate last rom with 1.13 radio and BT 3900. The extended rom contains a cab called BTsearchTime.sa.cab.
I'm not sure about it does, but I'm sure that it's already posted on the forums or on the ftp .
About WM5, I read many threads where people complaint about the speed. I decided not to try it, instead I set my HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cachesize to 4096, and I installed all the programs in the storage card (1 GB).
The performance was really boosted, at the expense of 4 MB of memory, but I have plenty of it, because I don't have to share too much with the storage.
I also use SPBPocketPlus 3, but just for the Closing App, Safe Mode, and rotation shortcuts. Otherwise, SPB Plus makes the PDA unusable - it consumes many resources. Pocket Hack master provides me the overclok/underclok possibilities, so, if I use the BA only as a phone, I keep it at 199 MHz.

w2003SE vs w5.0

I see that we still have a lot problems with w5 on our beloved blue angels.
Now, my question is: what is a major benefit to go from fast and reliable SE 2003 to W 5.0?
it's sluggish, unstable.
so, why we all upgrading-downgrading our devices up and down, is this a justified action to get a better OS or our desire to try something new?
Something new.
WM5 is a lot better than WM2003 but the problem is that there is no specefic official version of wm5 for blueangel, so developers reverse engineer other versions of WM5 and the leaked one from MS , to create stable OS. Latest WM5 versions are quite stable. None forces you to try WM5 if you don't like it downgrade and use WM2003
it's not about forcing me or someone to use w5.0, but what's better in this OS, what do you mean by saying better ? speed, stability extra functionality ?
I simply like it better
Its like WinMe vs WinXP
Well said TB. Kinda like, why are people instrested in Windows Vista? Windows XP work dunit? Acuttaly, don't answer that one.
Guys, you are talking very subjectivly:
like-don't like.
win me and win xp is quite dif. OS. Upgrading to XP gives us very stable reliable system with much more functionalities.
I simply like to see what extra features are in wm5, which are not available in SE.
so far we have OS with not 100% working BT, MMS, terrible ActiveSync, poor phone, etc.
I am very grateful to guys workimg on these ROMs, and thank them of course, but my question: is wm5 better than SE at all and what this better stuff is?
COM,
flashing OS takes about 15 mins. So, flash WM5, play with it. U can always go back to WM23.
And Wm5 to Wm2 is not like ME to XP. More like Win2K vs Win2K+service packs.
Well for me its a Me vs XP (My SE kept crashing and crashing, doublesending the same SMS, not sending MMSes at all, freezing when cancelling calls). WM5 drops Bluetooth connections, does strange things with the hw keyboard and works quite slow (I overclocked the CPU to 531MHz, it works... usable). But at least I can use my PHONE as a PHONE.
I agree with TB
I have many problems with 2003SE, 3-4 daily resets, because it hangs, when the battery and backup battery drains out you loose everything(such as in hard reset). I have no such problems with WM5 it is much stable and it is slower than 2003 but in the recent WM5 roms (Ivan's and Tuatara) the speed is improved and stability is much better than 2003SE
I like WM5 because it looks better, and the soft keys are very usefull. and you get to show off the nice and hard work of Mamaich, Tuatara and all others and say that xda-dev kicks ass!!!!
well, from what you are saying: wm5 is more stable !
Thanks, this is an advantage no doubt. let's hope we will soon get the final version from our gurus here.
By the way, should wm5 be a hardware independent OS, like windows XP and portable from one PDA to another?
Better not - due to XP's portability it eats up so much resources :| If you wanna try it yourself - Linux for example compiles (is compiled ) in order to match the HW configuration of the computer, while WindowsXP 'HasItAll, but mostly unusefull for your current hardware' :|
A new OS, which prevents your data from loss even at significant battery discharge, comfortable control without a stylus, improved Office Mobile. Noticeable cosmetic advantages.
...
Will there every be a BA Official WM5 release
no, microsoft made one and distrobuted it to the telecos but it is there decision whether to release it. as far as i can tell they will never do this as it doesn't make buisiness sense, why give a free wm5 update away when if you keep it too yourself people are gonna buy a new phone to get it?
but.. we are keeping our phones anyway hehehehe
(that's why we are on this phorum. Anyway..)
Hi,
I am using O2 XDA IIs for more than 8 months. I eagerly waited for the O2 update, as HP had offered to its ipaqs. But it was very disappointing that , instead of giving software updates; o2 started to show new models with Windows Mobile 5.0. I tried even from Microsoft site for upgrades, but that was a futile attempt. Then I finally decided to upgrade from XDA-developres.
You have to understand that major advantafe of WM5 over the Wm2003se is that data is not volatile; so there is no need to backup now and then.Secondly fast and secure. The major problem is that it needs faster processor. I hope it is helpful.

WM5 is slower than WM2003SE. WM5 best offering is persistent storage.
It is because it has NAND based rom. So, it doesnt offer XIP
Yes it is a lil slower than 2003 but it hte rom is properly build (Ivan and Tuatara roms) you will find no diference for speed, bu you will find a lot more stability. The CPU is not so important, we see devices with 200 MHz CPU to run WM5 just fine (Prophet and Wizard), of course they have a lil problems with multitasking but thay have only 200 MHz CPU, so you have to expect some lag. Blueangel have more than enough resources to run and operate WM5, we just need a properly tweaked rom for this device.

What's the use of 2005

I must say after months of flashing and upgrading to a zillion new WM 2005 romz, I'm so happy i went back to 2003 SE. (no disrespect to the fine work of all developers here)
I almost forgot how fast my device could be. And do we really need all the extra applications wm 2005 has to offer? Seems most people just want a fast device that lasts 2 days on battery.
The single problem 2003 has is the bluetooth issue, which still exists in some way in all WM 2005 versions. Isn't there a way to just fix the BT issue in 2003?
grtz
let just say ppl have different preference.
do u have the latest BT stack from widcomm ie ver 3900. It works OK for me(running WM2003SE)
actually no, i don't. I just have the standard rom. (140.556 i believe) Were can i get that? and can i install it separately?

I would agree, I have a BA with 2003 SE, a Wizard WM5 and a Prophet WM5. The BA certainly seems to run much faster.

I am talking about BT stack(and not ROM version)
You may check the FTP site for it
sorry i'm kind of a newbie, but I have bluetooth version BT-PPCE/PE 1.0.0 (www.broadcom.com) Build 3900 with ROM 140.00WWE and radio 1.1300 (1.15 did not work also)
is this the widcomm you mean?
if not, i could not locate it on the ftp site.
help is much appreciated.
for me, the most important beside having this BA as a phone is handling emails (in Vietnamese, a typical non english character set). 2K3 sucks a lot in handling this, and I still don't find any application which can substitute this UTF-8 in 2K3 outlook. With 2k5, life is much easier, but sucks in another aspect: cannot handle many emails (say - I am synchronyzing at only 1 week latest emails, while with my previous 2K3, it was 1 month without any problem).
Any suggestion to handle UTF-8 in outlook under 2k3 environment will make me coming back to 2k3 IMMEDIATELY!
Thanks for reading
I would like to see this thread filled with more info and turned into a wiki page comparing BA+2003SE vs BA+WM5...
Some things I would like to have better explained:
STORAGE - I have read that 2003SE divides its ram to be used as, well, ram, and the other part to be used as storage (like a ramdisk). So the is a backup battery to keep this ram alive if the main battery gets exhausted, but if you don't recharge for an extended time this battery could die too and lead to data loss and a hard reset.
In contrast, there would be no mode 'ramdisk' in WM5. This would solve the data loss issue, and have an impact on filesystem performance which is understandable. Well, BA+2003SE has 128MB of ram dived 50-50 by default between actual ram and storage and 96 mb of persistent storage, 40something available to the user. How does it change while using BA+WM5?
BATTERY LIFE - does it improve? if we have no more ramdisk, and thus no risk of data loss, do we have backup battery + main battery juice to chug along happily with our BAs?
PERFORMANCE - Do WM5 apps perform better than 2003/SE? Do they use more or less memory? the filesystem performance drop should affect apps differently...
STABILITY - How often do we need to soft reset with WM5? On my BA+2003SE, for example, I have to soft reset before using my GPRS. it connects once, and keeps happy until I stop using the connection for some time. After that it gets lost and I have to soft reset the machine to conect to GPRS again...
Persistent Storage
The reason I use the WM5 rom is the persistent storage.
I realize that not everyone runs their phone battery down or changes the battery (and I don't do it that often) but it's a nice not to have to do a backup everyday (ok I should but why) just because my battery might run down.
Also my BA battery would come loose at times and the phone would reset. With WM5 I only have to reset the date.
That's my major reason. Persistent storage. Otherwise WM5 brings no benefits as far as I can see.
I've been trying a week of wm2003 after using ivan and tuma (1.3, 1.4) for a month or 2.
All WM5 builds gave me these problems on-and-off in everyday use :-
Slow phone app response (answering on wakeup and dialing particularly)
Laggy UI response normally, sometimes crawls along for 30-40 seconds.
WM2003 gives me these :-
Tap-screen goes dead on wake up. Powering off then on fixes this.
Quick UI response normally, sometimes crawls along for 30-40 seconds.
Audio fails totally on the phone sometimes, reboot fixes this.
Crazy battery use compared to WM5.
(I don't have a BT headset, so I'm immune to the famous problems that brings)
To be honest I find as many, if not more problems with 2003 as with the recent WM5 releases. It's a huge credit to those brave guys hacking the rom in their spare time that their ROMs are more or less as robust as the official builds.
On balance I'd have to go for WM5 for its tight Messenger/hotmail integration, more efficient battery use and the more intuitive UI, even if it does respond slower.
Right now I'm checking regularly for the release of TuMa 1.5, at that point I'll be compelled to re-upgrade to WM5.
half your problems can be silved by using radio 1.12 or 1.13, 1.15 has a never ending list of problems with WM5. Downgrade and you will be fine
I'll copy your approach and go for 1.13 then, thanks for the help.

WM6 Slow?

I just got a treo 750 with WM6 on it. And i am going to turn around and sell it today because the OS is so slow. You click on something and it takes 1-3 seconds for anythign to switch pages etc. I know that the 300mhz processor is not enough computing power for a system like this but i was wondering if anybody thought that WM6 was the issue?
When i used to use an axim x50v and i upgraded to WM6 i had to do all kinds of registry edits to get it to run at a reasonable speed.

Why is everyone so obsessed with windows mobile 5 and 6

Performance for a device that runs in flash memory has to be lower performance than one that runs in ram when doing any writing so as long as you do backups just in case then the other benefits are marginal. I dont see any pont in upgrading if WM6 were available for the XDA 2i. With the right configuration and software the XDA 2i is still as good as any of the new PDA Phones around now apart from the camera resolution. It has a fast processor, good helping of ram, large screen, supports 4Gb SD cards and has a large user base. Work with what it offers !
I Agree
It could not be said any better.
I Agree...
I agree I only got my XDA IIi a month or so ago in a deal for upgrading somones PC for them and they offered it in PX I tried it for a few days and found it well worth while it will run TT6 no problems and in fact picks up changes quicker than a Navman iC520 I have personally all I really want is a car harness for it and I will be sorted
if you look at all the new applications that runs under wm5 & wm6, you would change your way of thinking... have a fast look at the himalaya (that has lower specifications than our phone)...
..
Also consider the vast number of applications available for WM 2003 and the small number that are WM5 only almost all of which have 2003 versions anyway. I honestly cant see anything that only runs only on WM5 or 6 that I would miss. There are versions of new software but almost all of these dont realy offer any new functions just re written for wm5/6 big deal. Having had a go on a couple of WM 5 PPCs I cant see any great benefit and performance seems worse than the Alpine generally.Because the majority of WM users are on 2003 still software houses would be mad not to support the main market. This will change in time but like so many new software releases there are few with real innovation, maybe the IPhone in an exeption but I will wait until there is actually something worth having before I upgrade. If you always hanker after the latest model you will not be happy for long as there is always a new model round the corner.
I reason was for the new built-in Exchange email connectivity with html email, which allows for instant email with out setting an activesync of every 15 minutes or so. My Phone will get email before my Computer does.
-Polen
i have an Alpine and a Trinity and use them both for different things, so far i have only found one app that was WM5 only, and have found a similar app for the WM2003 instead. The Alpine does have a tendency to get stuck more than the Trinity but it's the work of moments to soft reset it, and it doesn't suffer with the periodic lock up on receiving a text that my Trinity does.
Not sure i could actually pick one ove the other if i had to, and i may well have to as work may be reclaiming the Trinity when its current "test and evaluation" period ends.
I'm a Himalaya user. I used WM2003 till quite recently. I'm now a 100% convinced WM6 user. In WM2003 I had to constantly use the stylus, in WM6 I use my index finger most of the time. I still have a thumb keypad to click under my Hima, I believe it also fits on Alpine. Anyone wants to buy it?
