Unlock Ext ROM doesn't survive Soft Reset - P3600 Software Upgrading

Hi Guys,
I tried using the ExtROM_unlock CAB file for HERMES on my Trinity.
It allows me to write... but the changes made does not survive a soft Reset...
Please advise if there is any work arounds...
Regards
Fei Yu

But, exactly, what about the three .cab present in the ext ROM? What do they do? Is safe to ignore their installation (ie if they r only skins) or they represent some sort of upgrade/update of present features?

Well for soft reset survival you can try this hint read somewhere in the forum:
first exit your registry editor instead of minimizing it, then wait a while before doing the soft reset (around 30 sec if my memory is good).
Then you solve part of the problem: your Ext Rom keep unhidding BUT still write protected...
So you can't use it anyway :-(
And i didn't find any working solution...
about the 3 cabs in the ext rom i install them and did not notice any changes...

Question on using the extended ROM properly

I'm just starting to get into the depths of my PDA2K and this site is GREAT!!!!!!! Since I'm just one step up from "The Village Idiot", I have a couple questions for all you pros.
After reading about using the extended ROM, and unlocking it and seeing what's in there, I think I've figured it out. Whatever CABs are listed in the config file will be installed upon a hard reset....correct? If true, and since I have only 3.5MB left in Ex ROM, can I put the other CABs I wanted installed in say /storage/CABs, list them in the config file and upon a hard reset they will be installed? Is there any reason to put them into Extended ROM rather than Storage? Is it alright to put CABs in from like games, Resco Explorer, WebIS Mail, etc.? Lastly is there a way to set the programs up where I don't have to go back and enter all the registration numbers again?
Thanks a ton for your help!!!
Tom
In extended rom they are not taking up your precious storage space on the device.

is it possible then to keep the installation cabs on storage card,
and also, can that path be set in the config file in ext rom?
what happens if a particular cab is not found after hard reset?
is the installation stuck or it just gives a warning and keeps on going to the next cab listed in the list.
Have a read of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=83119#83119
It might be a bit to deep but should help you along the way.
1) You can keep a cab anywere you want
2) make sure your cab is read only as it can delete itsself after install.
3) to run a auto install from a differnet storage place you need to hack the reg (see thread).
In all if you have a sd card you could leave your EXt rom empty.
Hack the reg to the new postion and run the Autorun from there.
Have fun
Thanks for all the infor everyone! From what I've read in other threads I need to make sure that TPdisabled is set to off so that when programs like WebIS Mail and SplashID get installed I can touch the screen to make sure they install into the right place and other things. Correct? If this is correct, should I just remove TPdisabled all together?
Thanks again,
Tom
TPdisabled can't be set off, its either run or not run. So dump it and you wont have a problem
MDAIIIUser - Thanks for the link! I looked at it and you're right, it's pretty indepth and I'll have to read it more closely at a later time....like at work.
Question1: leochan2005 had a follow-up saying "why not use backup"? While I agree this would be easier, I'm assuming that by using your method one would get a much "cleaner" install than backing up all the crap that was on the system prior to the hard reset...correct?
Question2: It took me a long time to get my TMo settings setup on my PDA2K and I don't want to go thru that again. Is there a way to backup those settings so that they can be auto-configured at a later time? I read about making a personalsettings.CAB but haven't done it yet.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks! I take it it should be at the beginning of the config file so that I can access it. Correct?
q1)
Well the short of "why not use backup" is you can if you feel that:
1) Restoring Regedit values from a lower rom version
2) Restoring system applications form a lower rom version such as BT
are called for, wanted or even needed.
I fail to see that point as a upgrade is an upgrade and a backup is a backup. Now you could do a restore of your system data also (which you could also sync and that would be clean
Q2)
Most fo those settings are part of T-mobile.cabs found in Extrom, the rest would have been reg entries that you are going to have to hunt for and copy.
So sorry no way around reading the other thread (personalsettings.CAB)
MDAIIIUser - Maybe I should state what I'm trying to accomplish and you could give me a clue as to how to do it. A couple days ago I upgraded by BT on my PDA2K (generic from Expansys) to 1.0.0.3900 (or what ever the latest is) and I'm currently looking at upgrading my radio to 1.12, but that would require a hard reset. I'm not in the mood to go thru all the program installs and SMS/MMS tweaking again, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get all my programs and configurations back after the hard reset. I thought by incorporating the personalsettings.cab (for my Tmo settings) and your method I would be up and running pretty quickly. Yes? I have Sprite Backup, but I'm not sure if that's going to overwrite anything after the radio upgrade????
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Well my logic (that could be wrong) would say that a restore of your backup would get you to were you are now.
That you would need a restore as you have to do a hard reset after the 1.12 radion install.
But I can't answer the question will the radio be restored as well,
I don't know, I don't know the settings in the backup application, so am sorry I will have to let somebody else answer this one.

.cab queries

Hi,
I need some assistance. I am currently cooking my extended rom. My Extended rom does not have enough space so, i am putting some of my MUST HAVE softwares in my storage so that it installs after a HARD RESET.
But, most .cab files will auto delete upon launch. Is there any way to make
it not delete ? Kindly assist.
Thanx a million
You can avoid the CAB files being deleted by making them read-only.
Well i mean that there is a Registry hack that will not delete .cab's on installation, but you would have to make a .cab with that registry setting and install it as the first thing after hardreset, although i dont think it will work since the registry is already loaded, and the new setting require a reboot to work.
Look in Wiki for registry hacks.
So why dont you just Write protect the .cab's that you want to hold on to

i have tried that but, dont work
All my "wanna hang on to" .cab's are write protected, and non of them get deleted upon installation.
Manuel installation that is.

I have room enoughf in my ExtRom, so I have never auto installed from other than the ExtRom.
But I'm almost 100% sure that there was a topic on auto installing from \Storage (Card) sometime ago.
Maybee youll find some info in the Wiki

Wait a day or two, maybe someone who knows come along.
You can use a software name Cabinst wich let you install a cab without deleting it.
Easy.
Hi,
Easiest way is to make cab read only. Browse the storage card using PC via activesync. Right click on cab file. Go to properties and make it readonly.
You can also change the deafult beahvior of Instal by changing registry key.

fAskDest=0
fAskOptions=0
fEnablCef=0
nDynamicDelete=2
Supported="PALM PC"
* fAskDest=1 gives you a popup when you install a CAB so you can install on Storage Card for example
* fAskOptions=1 asked before overwriting, haven't found out if/what other options
*fEnableCef : I haven't messed around with that
* nDynamicDelete=0 and the CAB file remains, =1 it disappears but what the difference with the default value 2 is I couldn't figure out.
So if anyone else wants to experiment with it and post their findings
I searched Google but all I could find was about fAskDest

keep the ext rom empty,
after reboot hack the reg to point to new area.
Run the autorun from threre.
Have all files as read only.

Only problem is that all cabs are installed in the default location.
I have yet to get cabinstall to run in batch mode using the nscript tool.
Hope its what you are after

Another patched WM5 ROM to test

I've made another patched ROM: ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Blueangel/wm5_test/ba_wm5_patch3.rar
It differs from the previous ROM in the increased disk cache size and FAT write-through mode is turned off. This potentially can cause loss of data, though in my tests everything worked fine. SPB Benchmark test shows the huge increase in file read speed on my device.
After flashing the device you don't need to do hard reset, nor you'll lose any data (except for system clock settings).
mamaich, can you please tell me what software you use to edit the ROM and maybe a link to a tutorial? I'd like to take my knowledge to the next level.
Thank You,
Alex
Currently there are no tools to make custom ROMs as were for WM2003. I use hex editor (HIEW32) and IDA (www.datarescue.com) to find places I need to patch.
Thanks. I don't think I'm going to tackle that at the moment then
mamaich,
Taking the modules from the emulator image is a smart way bcz it shares the same build, but isn't it better to use the modules dumped from the universal?at least they are final.. (so far)
Universal modules I've tested would hang. There may be 2 reasons - they are dumped incorrectly, or they are designed for VGA-screen. Himalaya 1.60 files work, but they crash often. I think that this is a problem in a dumper. It dumps XIP DLLs/EXEs from memory when they are already loaded by OS and their data sections are already initialized. This cannot be fixed.
Images from emulator are dumped with dumprom tool that produces almost correct files.
I've played a bit with Himalaya registry settings and trueffs.dll driver and made a CAB that would unhide "Extended_ROM" folder and make it fully accessible.
Use this CAB at your own risk as it is not heavily tested.
Fatastic - Will try it right now
Hi Mamaich, Great work.. I will try it at ones... I have just one question, all the patch there has been made for the other ROM will they still work with this one
As soon as I have tested the new ROM I will let you know...
Re: Fatastic - Will try it right now
all the old patches should work with this rom too.

thanks

Hi Mamaich,
Can you pls help asian user by replacing the wince.nls file so that we can have Chinese setting on the BA WM5 machine?
Thanks,
Thank you very much, Mamaich, I finally got working (particulary, but still) a program that did not work before at all.
The extended rom unlocker works; still unable to install a new splash screen. Does the ext rom need to be bigger?
Edit, how do you hide it again? thanks
Edit2; i hard reset (clear storage) and its no longer showing. Hope there will be an easier way soon. Thanks

You can not hide your ExtROM once you have repartitioned it. Read the WiKi

ARGH! Extended rom access - can it be turned OFF...

... WITHOUT a hard reset?
I enabled it, and got a surprise - the Storage Card disappeared from the phone's idea of where it could put things! That immediately voided my custom ring tones and about half of my installed apps, plus I can't install anything NEW on the storage card (as the phone now sees the extended ROM as the only other place!)
Is this reversable or do I have to do a hard reset (and reload EVERYTHINg again!)
Try REMOVING the SD Card, then do a SOFT reset, then reinstert the card. Worked for me.
there is a file here somewhere that disables it again.

Hide Extended ROM again
What you are looking for, can be found in the WIKI-Pages!
The program is named EXTENDED ROM UNLOCKER and here is the link:
http://nah6.com/~itsme/cvs-xdadevtools/itsutils/extrom/
You can lock/unlock and unhide/hide the Extended ROM with this tool.
Hope this fits your expectations!
That's nice - its source. No compiler, no go.
Extended ROM UNLOCKER
Don´t know exactly where I found the download.
But the WIKI-pages have been the first station.
After grabbing my harddisk I can attach the file here.
The CAB-file has to be copied to the device and run. The links are placed under Programs/Extrom Tools.
If your folder is not ´Program Files´ (in Germany it´s called PROGRAMMME) you need to change the links or move the folder to the right place.
Sorry - but I didn´t proof the formerly mentioned link.
Or try this one I got from the WM2005 Upgrade forums...
Simplest solution....
Folks, it's only two registry keys.
Thanks to "Button" I have the answer:
To hide your Ext.Rom2 change these two keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\AutoLoad\TRUEFFS_DOC1] "Bootphase"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\TRUEFFS_DOC1] "MountHidden"=dword:00000001

Someone Please Help Me :) (ExtROM question)

Alright.
Here is what I have done up until now.
I searched this forum trying to find out how to unlock my ExtRom.
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1424566&postcount=374
I downloaded the zip files followed the directions and NADA. It keeps giving me some error.
I am a pretty smart cookie. I have been a network engineer for 8 years. I will be more then willing to help someone else out who can help me.
Thanks in advance
David
Just be sure to install the CAB's on the device, and soft reset after every install. Never managed to make it NOT work on my Treo

Now what?

That was exactly the pattern I followed about a dozen times, but continued to get 2 different error messages which told me to soft reset and try again every time I tried to launch the extendedROM application in Programs. Since I wouldn't have lost much more time to reflash my 750 if the worst happened, I took the chance of deleting the extendedROM files and partition with the standard File Explorer and hard reset the unit. Now, it's plain vanilla and no hiccups.
I get a error.
Insetkey failed when i run the prgram in the programs.
it says please reset the device then do it again.
I hit the reset button do it again and same error.
Any better ideas?
Do it again 3 or 4 times and more (if you get same message).
Then, you will see the another message.
I did it 100 times reset it I dozen times..
It does not work at all.
Is there another work around???
I got the Extended rom to work, but my questions are such...
what exactly does the extended rom do?
what is the benefits of having extended rom?
and is there a way to have more than 8.57 mb?

same here. ran the unlocker many times with reset after each.
first message is "insertkey failed! please reset device then do it again"
followed by "changeprotectiontypefailed. please reset device then do it again"
followed by "unprotect finish! please reset device"
after rest I still see all the 3 stuff and only UMTS in the Band Selection. does this mean it's not unlocked?
I manually deleted the 2 files from the Partition under Extended Rom, using File Explorer.
Am I missing something?
Any help will be appreciated.
Y.
After removing the 2 files from the unlocked ExtROM, should a small 32k filenamed 'ExtROMCopy.exe' remane under the Windows dir? Viewiing its properties from Resco shows the file is in Rom and is Read-only, fwiw.

So are you saying that it is not necessary to do the whole ExtRom unlocker thing??
Using file explorer, I found the files "ExtROMcopy" @ 32.1K but I don't see any way to delete it. I cannot find any type of partition. I also found "AT&T Icons" @82.2K and it is possible to delete that one. Or am I totally missing the boat somehow......
