Problem with Program Memory and SD Card - MDA Compact II Software Upgrading

Hi,
I noticed strange situation: when I use in my CHarmer TMUK 2.6.2.27 ROM with or without ext rom, I have problem with program memory - when I put SD Card in slot, about 10 MB program memory extra is in use. This makes me seek, then I have about 17 MB free memory, and I have problem with running few applications.
Did anybody have this problem????
When I use other ROM (for ex. Johnnnnnny's 2.6.2.27 too) there are no problem, but then I haven't for example desktop Comm manager shortcut and view (mainly view with GSM network information and Bluetooth state - it's very usefull)
Thanks for help...

same problem...
I have same problem but with Qtek_Charmer_AKU2 ROM. Is that normal behaviour or problem is with ROM?
I spend hours of time searching this forum for explanation and I couldn't find any answer...
Thanks in advance...

HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 0
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 0
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 0
problema megoldva! Azert csinalja mert hasznalja a gyorsito tarat es ha kikapcsolod akkor marad eleg memoria a programok futtatasara!Minnel nagyobb a kartya annal tobb memoriat foglal le a gyorsito tarhoz!
Enable FileSystem cache
To enable the FileSystem cache, speeding up overall performance at the risk of the cache not being written on a sudden reset:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 1 (DWORD decimal)
To disable again:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Note that by default, the cache size is zero, and you will see no effect. See "Increase FileSystem cache" below to increase the cache size.
Increase FileSystem cache
To increase the file system cache:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like.
Increase FileSystem filter cache
To enable the file system filter cache, speeding up overall performance with file mangement:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 4096 (DWORD decimal)
To return the file system filter cache to zero:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize = 0 (DWORD decimal)
You can set the value to pretty much anything you like.

solution!
changing to default:
HKLM\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache = 0 (DWORD decimal)
solves problem!
Thanks for answer Oszi!!!

Move Opera / IE cache to the 4GB part?

Hi there,
I experience many times internal memory lack when watching streaming videos as my Orange rom hav eaten up most of the internal storage.
I plan to reflash another rom soon but in the meantime does anyone knows if there is a way to have Opera and IE to place their cache files on the 4GB part?
Thanks in advance for any help you 'll be able to provide!
For IE you can use Advanced Config.
For Opera edit the file \windows\opera9\opera.ini
insert the following line
Code:
Cache Directory4=<<<YOUR DIRECTORY>>>
f.e. <<<YOUR DIRECTORY>>> = \My Documents\cache\
at the [User Prefs] section.

Where is all the memory?

Hello all,
I have the Rogers Wireless HTC Touch Diamond, which is advertised with 192 MB RAM, 256 MB ROM and 4 GB internal storage.
When viewing the memory page via Settings-->System (or the drop down menu on the Today screen), it shows total storage memory to be 91.8 MB and total program memory to be 115.0 MB. This doesn't add up to either of the amounts of advertised memory.
I was curious if anyone knows which portion of the memory this information represents - i.e. the RAM or ROM - and where you can find the usage information of the other. I understand the basic concept of RAM vs. ROM, but neither of these figures add up to the advertised 192 MB RAM or 256 MB ROM.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Rom
All your data is stored in flash and the flash is not erased if your battery runs flat.
This is called persistent storage.
Flash space in the Pocket PC is split between storage and ROM.
The amount of data or programs you install is limited by the amount of free storage (flash) on your device.
Storage in flash is not compressed.
Due to this design, programs that are installed / stored in flash are copied to RAM to be executed - they occupy twice the space.
The directory of data stored in the boot ROM is merged with the storage flash so the user sees the file system as one.
If a file in the boot ROM is replaced by a file in storage flash the storage flash file is used.
RAM
RAM is dedicated to running programs.
If you attempt to run multiple programs that are "hogs", they may not run or the operating system may close some of them.
The memory management for programs flushes pages of programs that are no longer needed, thus optimizing the use of RAM in the system for other programs to execute.
RAM Cache for Flash Storage
A portion of the RAM is used as a write cache to increase the performance of the mobile device when writing to the flash.
This RAM cache is fixed in size by the OEM and the RAM is not usable for any other purpose.
So before performing a soft reset or removing the battery you must turn the unit off and wait 5-10 seconds. If you fail to do this you may corrupt your internal flash storage.

Mike
Thanks for the reply, Mike; that's some really good info. However, I still don't understand why my memory page is only accounting for 92 MB (storage) + 115 MB (program) when there's supposed to be 192 MB + 256 MB (as listed in the Diamond specs). Where's the balance? I've attached an image for clarification.
Any insight into this would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Out of the 192MB ram (program), 64MB is dedicated GPU (video) memory. So in fact usable ram is around 128mb.
Out of the 256MB Rom, usually about 80-100mb can be attributed to the ROM image (firmware) of the phone and especially since you're is branded (rogers), there are pre-installed goodies (ya right) that are taking up your space as well.
For your reference my phone shows the following:
Storage
Total: 105.17mb
In Use: 82.54mb
Free: 22.63mb
Program:
Total 107.02mb
In use: 76.67MB
Free: 30.35MB
Keep in mind that i'm on a custom ROM so the numbers will be a little off right off the bat.
Perfect! That's the info I was after. I had a feeling the 'missing' memory was attributed to something like this, but now it's all cleared up.
Thanks again.

[SOLVED] Best swap size

Seen lots of comments saying best linux-swap=32MB, 64MB or even 128MB! Has anyone actually tested these conclusively? Would love to hear your results..
I've tried everything from 16 to 128mb for research purposes. I found that 32mb gets full sometimes and 64mb+ lags when it gets over a certain size. I use 48mb now, just to be different.
32MB, there's no point making it bigger.
Thanks guys...
Edit your thread name and add [SOLVED] prefix if you can.
Mine is set to 28MB and swappiness at 20.
I think its perfect, but no point in going over 32MB.
thanx .. no idea how to edit thread-name?
I have my linux swap set at 32MB with a swappiness of 60, with it at 60 I find it hard to fill it up.
I know this thread is old, but I don't see a reason why I should make a new thread if this one is right on topic for what I wanna talk about..
I first made an over sized swap partition of 256MB ( inexperienced -- I just got into smartphones and modding them a week ago ) and it didn't help performance much. I made a 32MB partition a couple days ago ( swappiness is at 90 ) and it really increased performance of my set.
swap
If you have a RAM equal or lower than 256
SWAP = 2 * RAM
Example
SWAP = 2 * 256Mb
SWAP = 512 Mb
If your RAM is greater just use a RAM of 512Mb
How do you set swappiness?
I used amon ra to setup swap and ext but no swapiness in there.
If its done in console that's fine, I'm comfortable there.

Weird memory readings..need explaining

Hi i noticed that i only have 28MB of ROM left. Installed apps ~90. I mean ok i have 16 games but it's small ones no 3D.
AppManager says 28M free of 196?! what's up with that. I though we have 512MB. To be sure i opened up shell and did a top and df -h. Here are the outputs. What the hell is going on there?
Filesystem______________Size______Used___Available__Use% Mounted on
tmpfs__________________192.9M____0_____192.9M___0% /dev
tmpfs__________________4.0M______0______4.0M____0% /sqlite_stmt_journals
/dev/block/mtdblock3_____145.0M___121.3M___23.7M___84% /system
/dev/block/mtdblock5_____196.3M___167.3M___28.9M___85% /data
/dev/block/mtdblock4_____95.0M_____78.2M___16.8M___82% /cache
tmpfs__________________8.0M______7.0M____1.0M____87% /app-cache
/dev/block//vold/179:1
RAM is also not shoing up as 512...although the device is rooted
and TOP:
Mem: 377904K used, 17136K free, 0K shrd, 8K buff, 42416K cached
CPU: 7.1% usr 21.4% sys 0.0% nic 71.4% idle 0.0% io 0.0% irq 0.0% sirq
after reading a different thread i found that different system compoents eat the rest of the ROM so we are left with ~200MB.
but what is mpfs__________________192.9M____0_____192.9M___0% /dev
Why is this not used at all?
There is no fix for the 196MB /data partition limitation yet. Your only option is to use apps2sd (after rooting). I have it set to 768MB on my SD card
thanks for the reply.. but still if i use apps2sd i won't be able to chose where to install an app.. right?
actually there is an option in the newest CM that allows you to turn on and off Install to SD so yes you can choose.

Its either /data or /sd-ext/data. CM adds this to the settings activity.
If you do decide to move to the other option, use titanium backup to backup to SD, then restore. It will automatically go to either /data or /sd-ext/data
Private data for apps is still stored in /data, but apps2sd does help in slowing down the filling of /data
thanks.. It's clear now.. sadly i`m not usin CM ROM since it has no smart dialing and some other stuff i cannot live without so i`m using the desire rom..
With the DESIRE being released momentarily i`m hope we get a cleaner/bugfree ROM.
Also i`m not sure what google is waiting for releasing a new ROM for the N1

Personal data storage space

In Samsung Program monitor, in Summary tab, there are 127 MB for "personal data", which among other things I see that stores the browser cache. This is part of the 512 MB of SLC flash on the phone?. Because it's going to have a lot of writes.
What else is stored here? Most programs seem to store their cache or data on the 2 GB partition on the internal SD card.
And second, if we have a 128 MB partition on the SLC flash for temporary files, why do we need a ramdisk?
Samsung could really stop introducing so many layers and let more free RAM for system. The OS knows how to cache files from storage, it has been done that way for decades.
