I think you're probably right, I didn't notice the smaller picture. I stand corrected.
What I will say is that the Expansys one IS an official HTC docking station. It has two usb ports and I suspect that it is of a superior build quality to the GPS For Less model.
This does not detract from the fact that the official HTC dock is a bit of a rip off!!!

cradle looks pretty good. No problem with a single USB - can just use a hub i guess!
Plus looks like no logo on it so I can spray it silver to match my Ameo! WOOHOO
Anyone bought one yet?

I received it, a couple of days ago... quality is not that good... difficult to connect my X7500 in it... the VGAexpansion connector is not well aligned with the USB...
Doesn't charge the X7500 itself, but no problem with the spare battery..
I didn't try the VGA or Video out ...
no problem to synchronize with Vista ...
So... I am not sure I would recommend this accessory, although it is very cheap

I've questioned the store and they confirmed IT'S NOT THE HTC.
Even is half the price, I wont buy it...
Best regards,
Deiota

I suspected it would be too good to be true. I doubt that Expansys would overcharge their customers to that degree as much as I doubt that GPS for Less could undercut Expansys by half. Presumably the cost of the docking station is set by HTC: the long and short of it is that HTC's device is a rip-off, but a cheap docking station with poor build quality and usability (if opinions are to be believed) is equally a rip-off at 30 quid.

The bad build quality is just on persons view, and i doubt gpsforless would have taken it on board if it was crap, as they are also a reputable company. It is also well known that expansys are rip-off merchants, ya just have to check and compare prices with ebay and various other websites on many items to see how they over-charge customers.

I've had crap stuff from GPS For Less, like car mounts that fall apart. You get what you pay for. Expansys don't set the price of the HTC docking station, they just may not be discounting it very much or reselling what looks like a very inferior plasticky design.
I find all the Athena docking solutions to be unappealing because of the need to slide the device onto the USB port. It has connectors on the base for the keyboard; why not add a few more pins in the first place for USB/power/VGA and have it drop into the dock.

One more week ... now the HTC 7500 can be connected much easier to the cradle...
I will make some pictures tomorow and post them....
With Vista pro .... I have to take off the USB connector from the cradle and then plus it again.... another way it doesn't get synchronize.. It is difficult to say it is the cradle fault or Vista or X7500 .... just it is anoying..
The fact is that when the spare battery is charging it is almost impossible to charge the X7500 itself ... so I have to control, wheter the X7500 is fully charged or not, quite often...

Just received the official HTC Dock. Good quallity, and when I put a usb stick in one of the ports and my logitech mouse in the other, both worked immediately. I am impressed indeed. This is worth the high price

I received it today
It comes with no extra charger, so you have to use your old one. It has 2 usb ports, 1 vga, 1 s-video and 1 composite port. Oddly enough it has 2 mini-usb ports. One for syncing and one for charging. I thought that it would be enough with the sync port as it charges as well.
It can be abit fiddly to get the Athena in place, but otherwise it works like a charm. Now I need to figure out how to change the keyboard layout (swedish) and follow up on the mouse pointer issue. After that is sorted out I have a simplistic PC for visually impare (the text is hughe on a 17" screen).

£69.95!!!!! What a rip-off. I know expansys are expensive but that is a joke (sorry). I think I will wait until they filter thru on to ebay.
I bought it from Dustin for SEK 1024 so I don't think it is a rip-off. They do not have a history of over charging. I suspect a device of this price class have expensive acessories. I am a bit disappointed that it doesnt come with a charger.

One seller used to have the have them on ebay at about the same time that expansys used to have them (although I think that they didn't have the second USB port). However, it looked to me like they were withdrawn because suddenly neither expansys nor this ebay seller had any in stock at the same time. Shouldn't be long before they appear on ebay. I seem to recall they were asking about £30 for it but I could be wrong.

can someone find one a bit cheaper? I'd like it for playing around testing external hard discs and accessories with but 70 quid is ridiculous for internet prices. Must be very few of them or something.......wonder who supplies Expansys as you don't seem to see their items on Ebay.
might require 2 chargers for extra battery
The docking station has two mini-usb ports. One for sync and one for charge. When I attach the charger to the charging port, nothing happens. My conclusion is, that the extra charging port is for the extra battery. This would mean that if you want to charge both the Advantage and an extra battery, you would have to attach an extra charger to it. If this is the case, it is even more odd that the docking station didn't come with a charger.
The only explanation I could find, would be that the mini-usb has a limited power capability and wouldn't be enough to charge both unit and battery.
//Johan
Joohan
Try to insert only the battery in its slot and switch between the 2 mini USB ports then see what happens.
USB doesnt have enough amps to charge the Ameo as it is, if you look at the mains adapter its a 1 amp output, usb from pc im sure is only half of that at 500 milli amp. the second mini usb may be to attach a second mini usb to get the full charge, I have an external 2.5 HD and it comes with a usb to two mini usb to boost the current. even then it still strugles, without the external mains adapter, which is 1.4 amps.
I could be wrong, just my oppinion, But I notice this when im in the car using usb charger, it keeps everything runnning, "tomtom" but wont really charge it.

This has been discussed before - it depends on the car charger you are using. The one that came with my Brodit holder happily charges the Ameo while using satnav and screen brightness on full.

Common charging port and headset port in diamond!!!

Guys
Are you all OK with the common port for BOTH
Charging & Headset
Dont you think this is a weak aspect of HTC as Diamond battery is so weak which necessitate charging it while using ur headset???!!!
Meh. After a while you'll get used to it - HTC like their silly ExtUSB port. Use a bluetooth headset or carry a spare battery.
Is there a way to use your own headphones with this kind of port? And: is there an antenna/headphone cable available in order to listen to the radio with your own headphones?

Of course there is..
Besides, if you look online, you'll see splitters for the ExtUSB, when you can both charge and listen to music at the same time..
As I understood, ExtUSB has 11 pins.. the splitters make it into 2 ports - 5 pins and 6 pins..
It may not look... "perfect" but you'll only use it inside anyway, on a desk (or chair XD )
Thanks for the quick reply. Can you recommend a place to shop for accessories like these?
Frankly speaking.. no idea..
I usually check several places to find a model that doesn't look to cheap, so it'll fall apart in a week, but also not too expensive..
You'll have to google, I guess )

Dirt cheap source of mini USB cables for Hero!

If anyone's looking for an extra cable or two, you can get them for $2.70/ea with free shipping from DealExtreme.com. I just got two in the mail today, and can confirm that they definitely have the same funky straight-side + sloped-side shape as HTC's own cables & fit the phone securely & snugly.
I can't really judge the wire quality (I'm not about to cut one open to examine it), but I'd say they appear to be about equal (or slightly higher) in quality than the cable that was bundled with the phone (same diameter cord, except the DX cord had strain relief & HTC's didn't).

Same here, same cable that came with ps3, digital cameras and mini camcorders, and prolly a crap load if other things!
I have a ton of these lying around!
Lol I broke the cable to my Mogul I went to sprint store, and told them my update to 6.1 wasn't working (the truth) they said it could be the cable and handed me 2 factory packaged cables! For free.
The problem with the regular cables is that they fall out unless the phone is on an absolutely stable surface. Half the reason I went on my quest to find the right cables was a road trip last month when I tried to use the cable from my old PPC-6700 with the phone laying on the back seat of the car next to me. Every time the car went over a bump, the cable briefly disconnected and I had to re-tether.
Anyway, I'm just pointing out a decent source of something that's just about impossible to buy for a reasonable price at a local retail store in the US (at least, stores like Best Buy, Radio Shack, and CompUSA).
Monoprice.com
ftw!!!:d
Unless you're using the additional Audio I/O connections at the bottom of the connector, there's no real benefit to using an HTC type USB cable over a regular mini-USB cable. I use both without issue.

For those that care (probably already know) but these are called extUSB cables. Not HTC USB cables (although they are only for, and created by, HTC)
I tried to use one of the cords I have laying around the house (since the cord that came with my Hero pulled apart where the cord goes into the Mini-ExtUSB tip) and it caused my phone to over heat and I tried another one and it worked fine so watch out and make sure that the cord you get is going to be the correct one

wait, so the cable is just a mini usb? we don't need to have one with the funky lil notch on it?

Video out?

So finally the streak is set to launch in the US this weekend. I've been waiting for this device but now i'm not sure because of the connection. Is it proprietary or has it been confirmed that it is PDMI?
One of my concerns is that if there is a cable that charges and does video out, similar to the HTC one, mini-USB (extUSB) to component (Yellow, red, white).
Currently i have a mount for my tilt2 and i just plug in the miniUSB and set it to video out which is connected to my nav screen.
My main worry is that if it is a proprietary connection, we won't be seeing many accessories and the ones we do see will most likely be from dell and cost a lot.

BenQ PDMI Cable Compatability
I found a cable designed for a Benq Joybee Projector.
However, it has VGA (analog?) out instead of HDMI(digital?).
It's labeled on some sights as a PDMI cable, and BenQ calls it a "CEA" cable.
Would this require it to work with the Dell Streak (if it is infact PDMI)?
I like the setup of this cable; but I can't afford to take a chance.
Please, take out spaces from Ws.

You'll need to take the space out of the URL; I don't know how it got there.
It should read:
Code:
shop.benq.us/DRHM/store?Action=DisplayProductDetailsPage&SiteID=benqna&Locale=en_US&Env=BASE&productID=181504800
PDMI is a CEA standard, so it's not surprising to see it labeled as a "CEA cable", although it's technically an inaccurate name.
Having found that same cable for the Joybee projector around the time of the original post of this thread, I dug a little deeper and found that the Streak's chip does indeed support VGA out (1024x768 max), but whether the Streak or Android 1.6 has the necessary implementation to enable it is still a question mark. Since one of my desires with the Streak is to use it for Powerpoint presentations with a projector, this would be awesome if it did work. I'd much rather carry this dongle rather than the Dell Home AV dock and VGA is quite standard in the Pro AV world, while HDMI is almost unused in that arena.
Anyone willing to pop the $65 (US) and test it out?
any luck with trying out this cable? or does anyone know of a way we can mirror the dell streak display to an external screen?

Very good in hdmi e 80 inch projector ... :good:
I got one from Amazon for 2t bucks. Compared it to a real one . It's got all most the same circuitry.
The chips that process the otg and charge curent signal are a lot different. But mine works it will charge while I runmy powered usb hub with my external harddrive. In the one I have you only get one otg option at a time. Like you can do one sd card or one usb thing or the hdmi out but not all at the same time so your going to need a usb hub thats got it's own power supply.
And like all Chinese knock offs you never know witch of there military owned slave labour operated plants actually built it . so there's a good chance you wind up with a better one.or one that isn't as good. Or maybe even one that doesn't work at all. They're all in the same case so its hit or miss.
My cheap knock off doc failed as off last night its no longer recognized as a doc. It shows up only the hdmi and charger.you can always charge and use hdmi out. But otg mod reverse the usb port so you can't charge.
Someone know a gadget that allows both usages? HDMI + USB at same time?

And like all Chinese knock offs you never know witch of there military owned slave labour operated plants actually built it . so there's a good chance you wind up with a better one.or one that isn't as good. Or maybe even one that doesn't work at all. They're all in the same case so its hit or miss.

Newegg is carrying these now under the brand name "Baaqii".
It's $34 ($28 when on sale) but it also states, way down at the bottom, cannot do both OTG functions at same time.

I'm thinking That to get otg charging theres got to be a switch in the software someplace that lets you turn offotg mod and turn in back on really fast. Like pules on off on off on off constantly in the kernel. But I'm also thinking that there might not be a switch like that in our phones.
I'm thinking that the chips in a smart doc probably do that. So that leaves us not much choice. We either got to buy a doc. Find that switch or
Get a wireless charger.
I found a port of the famous faux kernel. I tried it with the 5 dollar add on app. It had no effect on otg charging a note 2.
I'm thinking the best cheap solution is one of the inductive charger sets. Or possibly putting a 555 timing circuit into a usd cable.
But a $35 1 amp wireless universal charge plat and coil would probably be the easiest way to go.
