new and seeking advice - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hello,
I've been reading up on the kaiser for a little while now and think the specs are amazing.
I've been meaning to get a new phone for a while now, upgrade from my samsung e715. I'm thinking about getting the t-mobile wing as a replacement.
I was wondering if this is a feasible idea, I mean, with the possibility of at&t getting the kaiser, should I wait for that to unlock it?
Will T-mobile be getting a nicer/better version of the p4550 when/if there 3G network goes up?
Just seeking some input, and any would be much appreciated. Thank you

Yea... upgrade! WM will be a bit of a shock to you, it's quite different than what you're used to in terms of mobile telephony. The Kaiser would be a great piece of technology for anyone to own, however the price tag may not be everyone's cup of tea. Personally I plan to get an unlocked one for some 800 dollars. ATT may offer it for 500 with 2 year plan. As for unlocking, if you have international travel ahead of you in a near future then I believe there is a SIM unlock solution already. If not, I wouldn't worry about it until you need it unlocked.

oh well i was thinking of buying the at&t 8925 and unlocking and using on t-mobile. I don't know if it will be capable of syncing with T-mobile's 3G when they have it up and running, like what band they use and whatnot.

if i were you i wouldnt get the wing. its too slow, plus on a lot of them theres a memory problems. i used to have t-mobile but when i switched to cingular i found out they're much better and the signal is much better. also you get more minutes for the same price t-mobile offers.
so right now i have a t-mobile sda unlocked for cingular, just waiting for the kaiser. I dont know how long it will take before there is a Kaiser Sim unlock utility, so you can either get an unlocked htc kaiser or the AT&T Tilt (their calling the 8925 that now) and wait for a sim unlock utility.

think it would work on the t-mobile 3g network? on the 1700 band?

To all TMobile USA users and to pretty much and USA user

I just spoke to a very very knowledgable representative from TMobile USA maybe 10 minutes ago.
I first started asking about the TMobile MDA Vario III (or to most known, the Kaiser... i believe at least). After talking a little we got into quite a deep conversation, the first person from first tier support that wasnt an idiot WOW!
He informed me that he had heard that TMobile USA had purchaced the 1700mhz band for their new 3g network. That we would definately here more about the network this year but that they are waiting (to many stupid US laws...) for all current users to vacate this newly purchaces band.
Also he then informed me that anyone that would be either buying a Kaiser from Europe unlocked, or buying an AT&T 8925 (Kaiser) then getting it unlocked would have the likelihood of not having the full potential of their 3g netword on their phone. Also stated that when 1700 does become purchased and person currently owning the tmobile mda or the new tmobile wing would not be able to use the 3g networks.
Next he told me about how an htc rep had come into the office not to long ago and talked to him about their (htcs) phones. The htc rep informed him that they are currently working on a very very quick phone for TMobile USA, im guessing it is some sort of branch off from the Kaiser, but he had no information exactly about that.
I also asked him about the pricing of the monthly data connection. He said, "well all i know from experience is that when TMobile went from normal data speeds to the EDGE towers, the monthly price stayed the same."
Trying to think about what else.... hmmm. I'm guessing that is it, ask question if you can think about anything else... we talked on the phone for seriously 20-25 minutes... how blackberrys suck, how iphones are overated and only for fad following cheerleaders lol, just everything.
TMO is in big mess because governmental agencies are refusing to vacate the 1700MHz as quick as TMO wants ( Homeland security ). their 3G network will be delayed and their GSM net will suffer because they lack the spectrum. Their 3G testing in NJ/NY was halted because of inteference!!

MDA and WING are not 3G phones. 1700 was won in a bidding about year and half ago.

correct it was won a year and a half ago. but there is some governmental law that says each user has 10 years to vacate that band 1700. its just a matter of time before tmobile starts paying people to get off their newly purchased network.
also about the comment of the mda and the wing... yes I know that they are not 3g compatable but I think there are quite a few 8525 unlocked tmobile users on this site like me. and I think there are quite a few that have tmobile that will be buying a phone (kaiser) soon that will cost a couple hundred dollars. I'm just here to warn them... this new phone may not even be able to work on the soon to be 3g network. just don't want people to waste their money.

I can kinda attest to that myself...
A few years ago I purchased the wonderful Moto V525 unlocked and Voda branded. Popped in my Tmobile SIM and worked like a charm, with the exception of downloads. While on a tmobile branded V300 the same download would take say 30 seconds, in mine, by then unbranded and flashed a million times, would take maybe 20-30 seconds longer.
Granted, this is no indication of anything... I have a Tmobile branded Wizard that has been flashed to death with all kinds of home cooked releases and the EDGE speeds I get are just fine.

Yeah. Sorry about my tantrum.
I have to deal with the actions of the FCC all of the time. I work in the cableTV industry. Kevin Martin HATES us!
The FCC whines about monopolies, level playing field, innovation and all of the other FUN buzz words and then they pull a major (*@#&(*&#@(*&$ like this!
Really gripes my cookies!
And to all of the folks out there that want to give th government more control over their lives so that they don't have to deal with the challenges, let this kind of mis-management of resources be a lesson.
Ok, off the soapbox and back to the technology!

this may not be right, but here on xda-developers, if you go to the htc titan section, they also refer it to the mogul, 6800, and vario III?
so the Vario III might not be the kaiser.

Mog,
Since you mentioned Tmobile and unlock 8525, I was wondering what WM6 ROMs (Cooked or HTC Released) is the most stable, compatible with this network. I too have an AT&T 8525, SuperCID / SIM unlock that I use for Tmobile (USA) network. But all the stuff that I have read in most threads are optimize for AT&T.
Some folks in the UK who are using Tmobile suggested to go with WM6 cooked ROMs. But I know their network and ours are quite different. At first I thought if I purchased a Tmobile UK phone (838 PRO) and have it unlock, then it will be optimized for Tmobile USA network. But I found out that they're entirely different from one another.
I just wanted to know your feedback as well as other Tmobile users out there who uses 8525 or similar phone, which WM6 ROM would be best for our situation. Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Well go to the Hermes WM6 board, there was one just released on the 17th or 18th i believe. V3gp or something like that, I believe that would be the most stable because it is the closest thing we got to the WM6 8525 official ROM update. I myself am dealing with WM5 currently, I'll just wait for the official release which "should" be fairly soon.

I dont believe so, for hotspot at home to work you not only need the wifi capability you need some other program to be able to switch from wifi to normal satellite, but im not saying someone will re-release it themselves. We got alot of smart programmers on this website
6800/Mogul is a CDMA phone vs Kaiser a GSM phone.

1700???
I'm pretty sure they pruchased the 2100mhz band that would support video
800mhz old skewl
850mhz old skewl
1800mhz Edge\GPRS
1900mhz Edge\GPRS
2100mhz 3G-Video
1900mhz 3G-HSDPA
1700mhz\2100mhz T-Mobile 3G-not sure if it is hsdpa
Not positive why the T-mob rep told ya 1700mhz cause they purchaes they also purchased 2100MHZ frequency.

Once again, incorrect information.
It doesn't matter the band, ANYTHING can be put on any band.
T-Mobile bought the 1700MHz band to put their 3G on.
They can offer 2-way video just like every other 3G carrier, or they could do like AT&T and offer 1-way or they could not offer video at all if they wanted.
Its up to them
This thread was started with incorrect information and continues to get posts as such. Since this is just confusing more people than helping, I'm closing the thread.

Looking into buying a Kaiser

and wondering if i should go the pre-unlocked route.
my t-mobile mda is aging. gracefully yes, but still. one of the main reasons i got it was for the mobile pc idea and it has worked wonderfully but i must admit the built-in gps in the kaiser is a selling point. so...
i am going to keep my t-mobile account/etc and was wondering if i bought an unlocked phone and popped in my sim card would i be good to go as far as the radio bands? t-mobile has yet to roll out its 3G network at any significant rate here in florida and i heard rumors that their 3G freq was not the global standard (fcc issues or somesuch).
the kaiser i read does 3G and 3.5G as well as the GSM bands and tmobile has GSM now, so i am wondering if i am shooting myself in the wallet for a phone that might not work on the right freq once the t-mobile 3G comes online.
any thoughts or places i can check on this? i have done the google dance and i come upon rumor after rumor (most 1+ years old). so any hard info would be appreciated.

Do a search in this forum and you will be loaded with all kinds of info that your looking for.

i did and did not find the info i am looking for. lots of stuff for tmobile in the uk. lots of att stuff for the us. not a whole lot of reliable info for the tmobile in the us with unlocked kaiser (unbranded). i did call tmobile to find out about what 3G freq they are using in my area and the response was "we dont give out that information as of yet." very helpful indeed. but he did say that they have a 3G phone out now/soon (he couldnt say...again) that is a slider phone but no windows mobile. i think its a motorola something or other. not my bag.
so i guess i will sit on my mda.

Advice needed: Sprint Diamond or Unlocked

Sprint Diamond is on the horizon as is the unlocked 3G US version.
I need some advice or opinions. Do I go to Sprint or is unlocked better?
I am thinking of Sprint because of Sprint TV and Sprint Navigator being built in although I do have Tomtom software and I do have a Slingplayer.
What do you think? Is it a better idea to have unlocked?
Thank you for your thoughts.

Not sure if i understand your question correctly, but here goes.
The Sprint Diamond is CDMA. The unlocked 3G US version is GSM. Therefore if you have Sprint/Verizon the CDMA Diamond is your only choice. If you have a GSM carrier (phone has SIM card ie AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) then the unlocked 3G version is the way to go.
If you haven't choosen a carrier yet and want to know whether to go with CDMA (Sprint/Verizon) or GSM (everyone else) then a lot of factors come into play. I switched from AT&T to Sprint recently because I got on the Sero plan, the cost was too good to pass up, Sero it's probably the best plan available. I found Sprint TV somewhat useless since the quality isn't that great, the lineup was mediocre, and 99% of the time if i have the time to actually watch tv then i'm in a place that has a full size tv. Sprint Navigator is completely useless cause they'll probably try to charge you monthly for it even though the phone already has built in GPS, TomTom/Live Search/Google Maps are much better alternatives. Assuming reception is the same with all carriers in your area the only major downside i found with leaving GSM is the limited selection of phones. On Sprint/Verizon you are pretty much stuck with the phones they offer, whereas with GSM carriers as long as the phone supports the appropriate bands and is unlocked you can pop in your sim card and go which opens the door to european and asian phones.

I really appreciate the time you put into that response. I have ATT but can easily switch to Sprint. I have long travel times daily and will take advantage of the TV on my phone but as I said I do have a Slingbox.
I have noticed a lot of G-Sensor apps dont work on the CDMA Telus version so my guess is they might not initially on the Sprint version. I also think your point about having more choices in phones by being on GSM makes a lot of sense. Thank you again - your thoughts are well taken and I know it took you time to express it.

If you're satisfied with your plan then i'd just stay with ATT. You'd probably get more use out of Slingbox than Sprint TV, plus you can always load vids onto storage memory. And being able to upgrade whenever you want really comes in handy with the way HTC keeps updating their phone lineup about every 6 months.

KAISER: A Thing of the Past?

Hello everyone,
Been away for a short while, but I'm noticing that not much is happening new with the Kaisers. The cooks are gone to other things, and therefore tech support is far and in-between by what I've been reading over several posts in each of the Kaiser forum sections. I was just logging in to try and get help with making my volume louder (for the in-call volume AND the speaker), but my cook has gone, and seemingly not much is happening with regards to the ROM's needs.
So, is everyone going to I-Phones, or FUZE devices, etc.?
I'm curious because I'm really aggitated with AT&T right now. I just realized when I bought my wife her Samsung Epix, that JUST for buying the phone, I'm REQUIRED to have a $30/month data plan for her. She doesn't cruise the net on her phone. But she DOES text (I have the family unlimited messaging plan). She needs a device with a storage card so she can text, use the MS Office Apps, etc.. NOT cruise the net.
So, I'm thinking about changing carriers, but don't know anyone else other than T-Mobile that will accept my SIM card. And SOME say that trying the T-Mobile SIM card in my Kaiser will render the GPS, messaging, data, etc... applications useless.
So, just tryin' to get a feel of what to do next.
everything will work just fine. you should swithc to tmobile. tmobile is much cheaper than att. i used my kaiser on tmobile for nearly a year with no problems if you bring your own phone they wont make you have a data plan but if you buy one of their tmobile branded phones they will make you activate with a dada plans. anyway if you have any questions just pm me

Isn't the bands of the Tilt regards 3G different than AT&T? Thought the Tilt couldn't get 3G when using a T-Mobile sim?
Indeed the bands are different. You can't get 3G on T-Mobile with the Tilt. I use mine on Tmo everyday, with full GPS and everything. Tmo doesnt really have great 3G coverage anyways, so I don't really miss it all that much. But yeah, just use the combo SIM and CID unlocker, and slap that SIM into your Tilt and all is good to go.
Le Kaiser est morte, Vive Le Kaiser
Yeah...with the advent of more powerful phones in the HTC line (I recently went Rhodium/Tilt2), the Kaiser/Tilt is pretty much a dinosaur. I am still keeping the lovable brick for a backup. I've tried many roms...Thanks Dutty, Mr. NATF and TwoPumpChump for creating and releasing them, but unfortunately the Tilt's time for "Operation Upgrade" had come.
On the flip side though there are still folks cooking out there for Kaiser, ya just gotta know where to look and who to ask! Yeah, the unlocked Tilt will run with a T-mobile SIMM ( or any other network's SIMM), just not at the full potential that one would get on it's native network.
Good luck and good use!

Which gTab? Carrrier thoughts please...

Getting my GF a tablet and have kinda ruled out the Ipad because we both don't like Apple and iTunes. I;m experienced with Android and thats what I want to get her. I bought the NookColor and rooted it and all that, but it's going back. It's just not a viable solution for someone not too technical and wants to just pick something up and use it. Mainly because of the lacking hard buttons and no 3g is really the deal breaker now. The gTab seems perfect because of 3g and simple to use. I thought they were all the same until I started reading and it seems as if Tmobile is a bad idea unless you want unlimited data without a contract. So let me get to the needs: minimal data on a month to month plan. I prefer to pay out front and not be under contract. So which carriers Gtab is for her? Or should I wait for something else? BTW I don't like playing the waiting game because you just end up waiting and waiting. She's perfectly fine using a device for years where as I need the latest, greatest.
Thanks in advance.

I guess any of ATT or tmobile will be good. Because if u want to resale it (after few month ) you can unlock it and sell it on nice price and also gsm is acceptable in other countries too. can be used to make calls and receive calls too(dont know about sprint and verizon cdma tabs).
I guess tmobile plans are cheaper than att.
I have tmobile but i dont have data plan because i dont need it. I bought my on local craiglist.
For light no contract 3G, I think AT&T is the cheapest easy option at $15/mo.
The AT&T GT also has the "option" of easy unlocking, then getting a Tmo prepaid SIM and using Tmo's DayPass for $1.50/day, EDGE only, but for very light, day by day, its a cheap alternative.
NB you cannot do that with a Tmo GT since Tmo has blocked its own GT's from using the prepaid DayPass.
Another fringe idea is Sprint's GT, hacked to run on Boost Mobile, $0.35/day for data, but far more complicated to do the hacking.
Do not get the Verizon tab under any circumstances.
At&t will let you have the complete tab and phone experience. And it travels overseas better.
While I have and love the AT&T Tab, I'll throw a wrench in here and say that Spacemoose is going to bat for the CDMA Tabs with HC! I'd give the edge to GSM, but not a big deal as I use mine with Wi-Fi only.

- No GB upgrade -- and knowing VZ, it will be practically never when we get it
- CDMA generally behind the GSM curve in terms of carrier upgrades
- More development on the GSM front

Sure GSM tab is getting more ROMs, but the only official GB upgrade in the US now is Sprint CDMA and that works on Verizon's tab.
