PIE. Alternatives? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Using the Tilt's Internet Explorer, I can not access a particular website. The problem is that the developer of the website has a script to detect the browser and if it is not IE 6+ or above, you only get an error stating that you need to use IE and not Opera, Firefox, etc... But the Tilt is running IE, correct?
Anyway, is there a better version of IE that can be used on the Tilt? I have Opera installed and use that mainly but as I said, the site blocks Opera as well.
Help?

Send a nasty email to the developer telling him he's a f*cking idiot and it's people like him that break the internet.

Try PIEPlus by Reensoft,
It Adds Many Much Needed Improvements To PIE.
It Also Allows You To Change The User-Agent That The Browser Reports To The Server. (Essentialy Identifying Itself As IE6 For Example)

I second that on PIEPlus. It is a must have if you plan on using PIE.

PIE Plus is pretty cool! I like it.
Unfortunately, it dosent seem to fix the problem. I changed the User Agent to:
Mozilla/4.0
compatible
MSIE 7.0
Windows NT 6.0
PPC; 240x320
Did I miss something or do I need to keep on digging for a solutions?

The Picsel browser also allows you to define the User Agent string to IE6 etc.
It is a nice browser, but not as nice as OperaMini IMHO, but it will also view *.pdf *.doc files and text and images. There are cabs for it floating around here somewhere.

Thanks everyone. I found a browser.
Picsel (wizzzard!!!) works great! WOW, super fast also with easy to use navigation.
Thanks everyone!

this may sounds dumb, what does the P stand for in PIE? PDA?

The P Stands For Pocket.
Sorry To Hear That PIEPlus Does Not Solve Your Issue.
Might Have To Take A Lookie At Picsel.

Try Jataayu browser, Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335625

OK, tried Jataayu as well. Pretty nice. Tried it for about 2 minutes and every page that has a login screen, after entering my user/pass it wont let me click the "Login" button. Tried it on 3 different web pages and the same result each time.
Still looking for an alternative though.
I am almost done with the Tilt. I am giving it 1 more week and then it is going back to ATT.

Picsel browser

Hey all!
I love my Vario III,...just wondering if any of you were using Picsel browser?
It's awesome,...the only problem is that it doesn't interpret javascript
Anyone know of a similair browser that supports javascript?
Regards
Where did you obtain the picsel browser from? I always wanted to test the functionality but could never find a download. Looks like an OEM only product.
My Vario III arrives tomorrow
i absolutly love picsel, (other than the lack of java and sketchy flash support) its the easiest browser to use IMO... too bad they never released it comercially... they could make some serious money off it

hi my friend please email cab to
[email protected]
The version that i have installed is not working on my TyTN II
I'm getting the error:
Initialisation failur....in think this is German.
the version i have installed is simply entitled "Picsel Browser.cab" and was found on torrent tracker that canadians can't use.
it isn't very useful to me, but it is a novel idea of a browser.
quite a browser indeed, reminds me of the Safari browser on the iPhone. 320x240 doesn't quite cut it though for browsing, must look better on a VGA device.
Odd that you can't go full screen, or I missed a setting ?
deepfish from Microsoft is alos very nice (very similar to Picsel browser).

got a link ?
Thunderhawk is in the same vein as picsel browser, and works a little better. Basically, it renders the page on their servers, and then sends the page to your device. It is very fast and looks by far the most like pages rendered on a PC.
However, it is quite expensive, requiring a monthly fee to use the software. But there is a free trial to see if you like it.

Does anybody got a deepfish cab? " At this time we are no longer accepting registrations for the current technology preview."
deepfish
that would be great, i've been wanting to try out deepfish for a while now. that zoom feature would come in real handy for qvga screens.

Along with the cab, you will need the (per person issued (iirc)) beta activation code to make it work. Given that it is using a server to house the data and format it for you ... you would need that code or the server would deny you access.
jesus, what's with all the security?

Stop PIE from loading mobile sites

is there a setting or a fix to force PIE to load the non-mobile version of website, for example ESPN?
I searched but I end up coming up with a bunch of junk that didn't help me. I know that Opera does it, I was just curious if there was a way to do this in PIE. Thanks
I think it's to do with the User Agent string that Internet Explorer repors to websites. KaiserTweak offers the chance to change it, so if you change it to the same as your PC (go here to see yours http://www.hybrid6.com/webgeek/tools/what-is-my-user-agent ) then the website should "think" you're on a PC rather than a mobile.
I haven't tested this, but I'm pretty sure this is right!
thanks, I will play around with it, has anyone done this before?
If you change the string to report IE5 to the web server, you'll get what you're looking for. I did that for a while, but went back to the original settings as some sites tried to send content that my browser didn't like.
The other option is to load the site on the desktop, and transfer the real URL to the ppc favorites. This is what I ended up doing and it worked for most of the sites that I needed to get to.
Thanks, I can see what you mean, I will just make a bunch of favorites and import them into PIE. Thanks for the good idea.

ThunderHawk,Skyfire,Opera mini Alternative?

Ok we've all seen Thunderhawk,Opera-mini and the famous/infamous Skyfire (why no europe yet? grr)
Anyways, these browsers aquire your requested page on a proxy server at some location, render it there and send you whats basically an image of that rendering. That's all nice and all but in some cases Country locked services wont work on a proxy server in another country. E.g. Opera-mini's proxy seems to be located in Norway, so lets say your using a service like Pandora mobile (not that I do is US locked) you cant see it on your phone because it thinks your in Norway.
There are other services that act weird when you want to proxy them.
So back to my point. Is there any software out there that lets you do this on your own server/home PC? i.e something that can download a webpage, render it and sent it on in a mobile readable way
I've been using UCWeb lately. It doesn't render pages well all the time, but it's fast as hell. It's great for news, etc. and there is a .cab for both Smartphone and PPC.

I don't think you're going to get that unless someone on XDA makes it. Companies like Opera and Skyfire Labs aren't going to let you choose your proxy because they'll use those stats for targeting ads towards you. They can say they won't all they want but that's really hard to believe seeing as tho that's how they can make money off of free products. Letting your use your own server or (even worse in their eyes) your home pc disconnects that revenue stream.

Besides the ones you mentioned? No, there isn't. You could write your own, I assume that in Linux it wouldn't be too hard to write a program to render a page, capture an image, and then send it somewhere. However, you would have to write your own browser software for the PPC. Chances are, anything you came up with would be a lot buggier and less feature rich than something like Skyfire.
The inherent limitation of "re-rendered" mobile browsers is speed. Chances are, Skyfire's servers and internet connection are a whole lot faster than your home PC's. If you want speed, use Opera Mini or Opera Mobile.
i use pie but i switch between netfront and both versions of opera(not mini) depending on what i'm doing.most of my usage stays with netfront though.

Hmm sounds interesting. Pity, my programming experience isn't great for Linux or WinMo.... But with the imminent release of Android on a HTC (any day now we're led to believe) perhaps some one will develop such a system? It'd be nice.
I even wouldn't mind paying a developer for just such a system
As for connection speed at home, not a problem, I have a 20-50Mb cable and 100Mb fibre connection . Also at the rate DSL and cable speeds are increasing these days (at least in cites) I don't think connection speed would be a major issue.
Another nice idea for skyfire, opera etc would be localised proxy servers.

New Skyfire Out Today - Now Supports VGA!

Gotta love it. Hulu on my Fuze, I don't think I'll ever get anything done. , it doesn't seem like the actual page resolution that skyfire downloads has changed though which sucks. but the menus etc. now completely function in both landscape and portrait.
Cheers,
Migsims
** EDIT ** Some people running the stock rom seem to be having issues installing this. I currently have - PROven ROM 1.03 20757 HD build - flashed on my Fuze and Skyfire is working great installed on my storage card. I'm not sure what the issue is.
http://get.skyfire.com
Version 0.85 of the Skyfire mobile browser is now available.
To get the latest version of Skyfire, point your phone's standard browser to http://get.skyfire.com and download the newest client. The site will detect the device and provide the appropriate installer.
Please note: if you are a current Symbian user you must uninstall the existing client on your phone first.
Release notes follow.
Skyfire 0.8.5 Release Notes
Released: November 21, 2008
Skyfire brings the PC internet experience to your mobile. Watch videos on YouTube or Hulu, connect with your friends on Myspace or Facebook, shop on Amazon, or listen to music. If you can experience it on your computer, you now can do it with Skyfire on the go.
Skyfire is fast, easy to use and available for free for many smart phone models.
Skyfire 0.8.5 Beta adds (standard) VGA support for Windows Mobile devices and brings the feature set for our Symbian client in line with Windows Mobile. Skyfire will continue to maintain both platforms in future releases.
We greatly appreciate your participation in our beta community. Your support and feedback on the forums at http://support.skyfire.com/forums/ helps us to constantly improve the product.
What’s new in 0.8.5 for both Windows Mobile and Symbian:
* Simple Download: This is big for us and we hope for you as well. Now, there is NO requirement anymore to register in order to download, access, and use Skyfire. With this release, downloading is as simple as pointing your existing mobile browser to http://get.skyfire.com. We detect the device and provide the installer for your phone.
* Optional Registration: Once downloaded and installed, you can use Skyfire right away. Browse away, create bookmarks, and check your history. Everything will work.
Why create an account? So you can retain Bookmarks and History in case you lose your phone or have to switch phones. Furthermore you can post and participate in the Skyfire user forums.
Already have an account? You can still access your existing account by simply logging in on your device. Or, create a new account. Or, migrate your account between phones. It’s now all done from your phone on the Skyfire start page.
* New UK Data Center: We are looking forward to providing better service for our UK based users and are currently building out a new data center. If you are in the UK you should automatically connect to the new data center and experience better performance. If you are not based in UK, then you will automatically connect to the US data center. Please bear with us as we work out some of the kinks – especially with account migration.
* Overall Improvements: Client and Server robustness, streaming performance, recovering from lost connections.
* Improved rendering of mobile pages: We better detect and render more mobile pages. The list continues to expand.
* Updated Skyfire User Portal: We continue to evolve our user portal and start page. Although some of it was already visible before 0.8.5, it is worth mentioning:
o Google Search & Search Results: It’s the best and the most used.
o Updated weather widget: Now supports Canada and UK postal codes, in addition to US.
o Region specific start page: Custom feeds and pre-populated bookmarks for US and UK.
What’s new in Windows Mobile 0.8.5 since Windows Mobile 0.8?
* Standard VGA support: We are excited to now provide VGA support for the number of new devices that recently entered the market, including the HTC Touch Diamond, Diamond Pro, HTC/ATT Fuze. Please note that we support Standard VGA support (e.g. 640x480). Widescreen WVGA (e.g. 800x480 etc) is NOT supported yet.

Didn't work for me ...
I dowloaded the cab from the 'get' link and when I tried to install it I got an error stating that "...The installation file is not intended for this device."
I used Skyfire on Tilt all the time so I was hoping it wouldn't be a problem on the Fuze. Must be doing something wrong ... ?

It's working fine on my Fuze, dunno what's up there. What version did you download?
It worked for me too. When I went to that website it said my device was a TouchDual, but it still worked and landscape works fine with our keyboard too.
I too got the same error. The link automatically sets version 7.9x. Maybe they will get it worked out. Also the user control has been moved to the mobile browser. And since some of use have moved on to the fuze we can't access the control panel to say change device.

The link defaulted to "Skyfire_7927-PPC50". There was no option to choose anything else. I not only tried the link from my phone but also got the same file when using the laptop.
I'll keep watching to see what might be the problem.

Did that and got same results, meaning "Unsuccessful" message.
*EDIT: Worked this time. Must have been me on the transfer from laptop. Got it working now, so thank you for the recommendation to try again.
copy it to my device, installed and had to soft reset to get it working. But it works very well. Now I have 3 browsers to choose from What is the down side to SkyFire?? Seems to do everything.
On the ATT Fuze I went to the site, it said I have an HTC phone so I click to download it didn't work. But if I selected This is not my phone, then went to WinMo 5 or 6 Touch it worked flawlessly :-D
i did the above and it worked, problem is the browser looks blurry... like a scaled up version of the qvga version... when it loads a page and th site takes up the screen you cant read any of te small text... opera is nice and crisp and clear...
ill try the other installation way when i get to my home computer to see what works there. I looked around in the settings but nothing is there as far as adjusting resolution or anything.
shade
i think all they did was make the menus and stuff vga for now and hopefully soon they will actually make the whole thing fully vga
hmm, that could be it... the address bar and stuff are all crisp and vga-ish...
can some more people who have this running give more feedback on this...
oh, and is there tabbed browsing on this browser at all? I cant seem to find it. for a browser that claims to do EVERYTHING, thats the one thing I am really looking for!

Its is def not as sharp as the Opera browser. I also noticed its alot slower now then in the locked betas :-( I guess because the server load is growing but I used to watch streaming video all the time.
yeah the problem is that any flash is streamed and compressed on their servers ala opera mobile.
It would be really nice if adobe finally got off their ass and made an updated full plugin on not this flash lite crap.
Well if definitely does not look as nice as Opera....and is there a way to make this work with TouchFlo3D?
Yeah, I had to download it, transfer it to my storage card then install it without issues.
I still get the half screen issues that I had with previous versions.

I wish that opera would just go away. It is a clunky and impossible to use web browser that serves no purpose other than to divide the competition against MS.
And now wow, they threw in a web server.... in violation of the terms of service of 99% of ISPs. *GOOD MOVE!!!* (thats sarcasm in case you missed it)

What the hell is wrong with you? Internet Explorer, especially for WM, SUCKS! Opera Mobile and Mini are super fast, and very usable, even on my old HTC Touch.
While I prefer Safari to Opera on my desktop (I do like Opera more on Windows though), Opera for Windows Mobile is the best browser I've used on Windows Mobile.
yeh, opera mini is pretty good stuff to use with WM!
Hey Bro.
Opera starts since 1997 .
Tell Mozilla to beat that .
Opera created tabs, session managers and mouse gestures which IE and Netscape didnt have during that time.
Have you guys tried the opera:config hack? (on desktop)
Type that in the address bar.
Go to performace and change everything to 9999 except for HTTP error strategy.
Sometimes the hack might revert back to 1 , so if you find your opera slowing down, go back and do the hack again.
