I've bought a used xv6600 off ebay which I'm going to convert to a carpc.
As a first time BA user, i have a few questions.
I have read the wiki/searched the forum, but I'm a bit mixed up and hence posting this thread.
installed versions on the phone:
model: PH20A2
ROM version: 1.36.00 WWE
ROM date 01/13/05
radio HA01_151

a few notes:
- Its not going to be used as a phone as I can't register it with my local cellular provider (although they do support CMDA EVDO) - so I couldnt care less about if its radio works..
- Its going to be paired to a BT GPS from socket.
- the BA/xv6600 is going to be permanently mounted into the car (I'm still designing how, it would be in horizontal mode though).
- since It'll be permanently mounted, I won't (and couldnt) use the keyboard..
- audio out is going to be used to connect to an external speaker
- the BA will be charged from the car's 12v (always connected).
my questions are:
1) where could I find schematics for getting audio output (if exists), as well as where to connect the charge directly to the BA's connector.
I have only a cradle, no sync cable, which means I'd probably have to open up the BA and soldier directly, or get a connector...
2) should I connect audio out to the connector (if possible?) or the 2.5mm output on top of the device.. ?
3) I'd be interested in upgrading to WM5, I've read on the forums that it isn't possible on the CDMA versions because the radio doesnt work (or does it?). Since I don't care about the radio, could I install WM5 ? which ROM would be suitable for my BA model ?

Might be a bad idea...car batteries are designed to give out high power for short periods, not low constant drains. Personally I'd connect it to the ignition circuit so it's only powered when the ACC line is live. This will also turn it off for you after X minutes if you use the "auto-power off on batteries" function. It may even turn it on for you!

The connector does have audio available. Buy a cable and hack it because if you mess it up you just buy another. Messing up the connector itself on the phone is more fatal. I think the schematic is on the wiki for the actual pin outs.

Yet I'm wondering, some connectors don't include all 22 pins, but only the ones actually used for charging (for example) - and then it'll be really hard to hack them.
I guess i'll just have to hope I buy one that does have all 22 pins installed... unless you have other idea's for me.
Also, for the charger, you're right, I didn't mention that, but thats somewhat my intention.

Yes, that's correct. If you get a charge & sync cable you'll have most. Might need to take audio from the 2.5mm jack in that case. That's probably the simplest solution if you cannot get a fully wired one. I'm interested in this sort of thing, so if you could post an update on what you go with I'd be grateful.

I doubt you could get two SD cards. What may be possible is some sort of SD card extension device. Never seen one (never looked), but if it existed you could have a dash-mounted SD card.
Bluetooth or WiFi might help you e.g. with WiFi you could browse a network share to copy music over from your house. Also, there is a tool for WM5 that turns the phone into a keydrive, i.e. a USB mass storage device. Unless you need contacts etc sync'ed, that might be a bit simpler & give you more options to what you can hook up for.
PS bluetooth on WM5 isn't all that great. There is a "fix" that wakes the device now and then. This would light up your car overnight and might possibly be a thief magnet. On the other hand, if the battery dies on WM2003, you lose the data on it.
- At first I thought of making the device extractable, so I thought it'll be better to use the connector on the bottom for audio, but I've decided not to go this route (more complications and harder to make - also makes it easier for thieves.
So I'm probably going to go for the 2.5mm jack for audio.
- as for SD, since the SD slot won't be accessible, I thought of making an SD slot on the dashboard - and I'd like to switch between both.
an SD is connected via 9 pins, meaning making an SD switch is possible, but you wouldn't be able to use both.. thus I was wondering if software/hardware wise there is a builtin capabilty of such a thing as using two SD's at once. that'll be really cool.
- unfortunatly my XV6600 does not have WIFI, and BT is NOT an option for syncing (too slow !! - just imagine syncing 2gb of audio/vid via bluetooth..)
the two idea's I've had is making a USB connector on the dash (just incase I can get a laptop in the car..)

i already have a car 12v connector -> usb charger device.
Should I buy a SYNC cable and convert it to charger, or car charger and convert it to USB cable ?
(although car charger might not have all the right pins..)

Never heard of that I'm afraid. A switcher may work, but make sure there aren't any other physical switches that get tripped when you put a card in.

No, it's different ones. WM5 uses the "storage" area for your personal data; you now no longer have /storage as it's all in there. The RAM becomes proper RAM, although you can use some of it as a ramdisk with the same loss-of-power issues as WM2003.

That's exactly what I do. I've stopped using the PC installers, there is enough junk on my PC. Just find the cabs for the apps and keep a copy on the SD card.
Not all apps have cabs.. so that might be a problem.
as well as I'll have to make pre-made .reg fixes just incase I'll have to HR.
as for WM5, if I install it, won't I have less free space then ?

You can extract the cabs in various ways. Some exe's can even be opened in winrar.

You can reformat the storage area to 60 meg before the upgrade. Only before though. You don't get a memory slider like in WM2003.
Still, I'm not so sure on WM5 being the best for you. You'd want to have reliable BT and I'm not sure it is on WM5.
So I guess I'll stick with WM2003 for the time being.
I'm ordering an SD slot for the dashboard, as well as a USB connector.
Another Idea I've had is the need for the hardreset as well as reset button.
to which version should I upgrade my rom then ?

sorry to butt-in but, someone had done that before: SD-WiFi & SD Mem Card in parallel on the same 9 pin source: pda sd expansion.
a switch might be of help if you don't want to use the two slots simultaneously.

I'm reading a lot of the SD specs, So there is a very slim possibility I'll be able to get two cards to co-exist (and I would love some proffesional help if any of you guys know more about SD's then I do).

(Technically, you could install Sven Killig's kernel with USB host support and HDMI dongle drivers, make cables, buy USB2HDMI dongle for $100 or so, and then you could have some way of video out. But given the question and the lack of skills to search the forum, I don't think these skills are enough to make such modifications - including the fact that this kernel can't be used for anything else, since it disables normal USB device functionality).

I have used the search, I just didn't find the answer, thought to ask maybe someone heard about any news on the topic.
I have seen the usb host hack, and that is what I'm thinking about, but was interested if there were some better options to do it (aka via the 3.5 like the samsung galaxy s does).
So back to my question, is anyone working on anything like that besides the usb host hack aka via the 3.5, or maybe a way to directly use a micro usb to hdmi cable?
I'd have a lot of money if I had $1 for every time it needs to be explained.
There will be no integrated video out of any kind for Nexus. Ever. Because there is no HW for it inside.

You didn't search enough.
The hardware is not there to output video though the 3.5mm jack, nor the usb port.
You may not know how useful USB host is. You can use USB stick (up to 32GB), USB keyboard, USB mouse.
If it had USB host, I'd buy it for sure (wifi only).

I'd guess that its not going to ever have the capability without hacking. I don't think any device has that at the moment.
I guess what gets hacked depends on what the hackers think is worth doing, and I can see that USB host would be an especailly awesome thing for the Tab so hopefully it will get some interest.
If its a game breaker, you may well be disappoited for a long while tho. This kind of hacking doesn't happen over night.

This is SO true. I remember people trying for years to hack USB host mode in to Nokia's Linux Tablets: the N770 and such. I wonder: Did they ever manage to do it?

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong (as I don't have the device in question) but doesn't the Nokia N8/E7 support just that? I seem to remember a video demonstration of the N8 supporting an USB memory stick.
Also, the Tab will have a dock that has a keyboard, so it's not totally impossible for it to have USB host capabilities.

I don't know about the N8, sadly I just don't have much interest in that part of the mobile space. However, some googling seems to indicate that it is possible (news articles say so) but I don't know if its naitive or needs hacking.
As for the keyboard and stuff, thats a good point. I can't see them using a non-usb standard for that, so it must just be the proprietary connector that makes the difference. In that case, all we should need is a Tab-USB connector, and a few drivers. That would really give the tab some muscle.
In general can mobile devices support the USB min-harddrives ? The ones that power from the port ? If thats possible then the tab will kick serious ass. 250 gigs in your pocket for cheaper than a microSD card.
I'm not really a fan of Nokia's products either, although they USED to make great products they haven't done so in awhile. And I *hate* Symbian. Anyways, at least the N8 DOES have some USB Host capabilities:

Well if they are going to officially make an adapter then maybe we are going to get USB Host... I can't see how you could transfer things off a digicam without the Tab hosting it as a drive.
Well... This looks pretty awesome then.
But they *CAN* cripple the functionality to just mass-storage devices or perhaps just cameras, like Apple did with their USB Camera connection kit, or whatever it was called.
Let's just hope that Samsung doesn't go that route.

From some dmesg output I saw elsewhere (but not with the keyboard dock), it appears that the USB chipset is an OTG version, and seeing it act in host mode with the keyboard doc plugged in would be a nice confirmation.

OK, I just ordered a keyboard dock and I'll have a look. I'll post a dmesg output and open it to see if the PCB is marked in any way.
According to the pinout (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9925838) there seems to be no other way for data to flow apart from USB.
So one of the following must (should) be true:
1. Samsung is reusing the pins for a proprietary protocol -probably reconfiguring the device by pulling up or down other pins.
2. The device is capable of host/OTG mode but it is probably unpowered and it probably needs a pin pull-up/pull-down to enable.
3. The keyboard is using unidentified pins, and the USB pins are used simply for the PC connection and power.
Does anyone know if the keyboard acts as a proper dock? i.e. when you connect it to the pc does it work at the same time as (say) KIES or drive mount?
Just a quick update, the keyboard was just shipped, and I should have it by Tuesday.

USB host
This is a good concept. I have an Archos 70 and a Galaxy tab. Archos has a micro usb port with which I connected my USB host adapter and the key board and mouse works . Flash drive and router dongle says more power required. So I am looking for a powered USB connector for this.
Unfortunately, Galaxy tab has different cable and I dont know if I can find a host cable for this. Any suggestion?

I have been trying to get my OTG cable for my nexus 6 working for weeks now to no avail... I am rooted unlocked and have tried every app that I have found to help in the mounting process. I use TWRP and am not able to mount through recovery either. I have read that others have gotten an OTG cable to work with the Nexus 6 but like I said, no one has been kind enough to take the time out to help. Because I am out of resources I am going to put my faith in humanity and ask once again.... could someone who knows this process please give me a hand in this? Thank you very much in advance to anyone who would be willing to help.

I dont know if this will help, but here it goes.......
I needed an OTG cable for a device a few years ago. I went to microconnectors.com and searched...I found E07-171-OTG for 9 bucks. I didnt have to do anything more than connect it to my device and was able to wipe my device with no problem. I saw your post this morning and searched for my OTG cable and connected it to my N6 and it worked. Not that I expected anything else, as it is a USB MICRO to USB FEMALE. You can probably find it cheaper elsewhere on the Net, but again I did not have to load any software at all....just plug and play....so to speak. Hope this helps.....
Use Es explorer or chainfires stick Mount and or still work just fine. I use otg everyday without issues.

Thank you both for responding and I really appreciate you taking the time to do so. Unfortunately I believe that there is something more going wrong here than just missing a step. I have tried the CF stick mount and ES explorer. Also I too am using a standard micro USB to female USB connector and its getting no signal even when I look for it using a terminal emulator or adb shell i cant find anything under /dev or /mnt. I really need someone who knows linux better than me on android who can go through a troubleshooting process of elimination with me. Thank you both again for your quick reply!

Does the off work without issues on other devices? I don't use stick mount as much because es file explorer always works for me now. Did you look under the local section in es file explorer, it should be under the option for SD card on the. LHS window that you pull out.

yes I have looked under SD card in ES explorer. And Im assuming you meant otg and not 'off'? I have not used it on any other devices no. And it very well could be the issue that the cable is no good but that is part of the troubleshooting that I wanted to go through. I made the otg cable myself and I literally made three of them thinking maybe I was doing something wrong with the the fabriccation of the cable but I am 99.9% certain that there is nothing wrong with the cable. I made it a Y cable with the 4th and 5th pin on the mini usb male shorted (jumped). Then with the male usb type a plug only having pins 1 and 4 populated. I have made plenty of usb cables in the past and like I said made three of these before I was sure that the cable wasnt the problem. The cable when plugged in charges the phone fine just even with the otg troubleshooting app doesnt show a mount point. I couldnt even find it in the shell as a charging device yet it is clearly charging

It could be the way the device is seeing the cable (I know some cables are charge only) maybe the phone sees it as one of those? I would try to find someone else you know who has a Android phone and see if it works. Its odd that it doesn't work, I have a OTG cable and 3 OTG flash drives that I use, but I haven't had any issues with my phone finding them.

When you say otg flash drive do you just mean flash drives that you have dedicated to otg use or is there something special about them? How about the permissions or the way the flash drive is formatted? should work with just a normal fat32 formatted flash drive right? And I tried getting the cable to work before I even put the charging option on it thinking maybe the flash drive needed power and didnt work than either. How about when a flash drive has a led light for an indicator on it. when you plug it in to your phone via the otg does the light blink during activity?
o and I have checked continuity of the cable with a multimtr and everything is fine there so GRRRr!

I know enough to splice some wires but I couldn't tell you why it's not working. I hope someone here can help you out.
so I tried a usb with a led indicator light and it does indeed light up showing me that the cable is in fact good and that the usb is being recognized but I still cant mount it or see it in the file systems.... The light flashes on the usb when the phone is booting and when I plug in the usb and still no recognition in files

Thumb drives will work anyway assuming they are formatted correctly. I believe they need to be ExFat not Fat32 to work with OTG.
I did try exfat also and no luck there either... the cable does work on other devices so wtheck? Anyone else can give me some help please? Perhaps a "member" could help....

How in the hell does Google let their devices languish in locked bootloader prison with carriers anymore? Why don't they give us the ability to root the phone if we're developers? You'd think you could just jump right in and unlock your bootloader on the Google Store purchased ones (unlocked ones - not Verizon trash) except they don't provide a cable TO CONNECT TO YOUR PC WTF WHY AM I YELLING

am i missing something? i got my pixel 2 from google store, and unlocked / rooted it easily the same day i received it thanks to awesome members here at XDA
it also included the necessary USB-C cable (and adapter to connect to type A usb ports)

The cable I got was USB-C to USB-C to plug into the phone and the charging brick. The adapter I got was USB-C male/USB-A female so you could attach it to an old phone and transfer contacts. You telling me you got a cable/adapter that let you connect your new phone to your PC?? I'm even more pissed off if that's the case...poor distribution QA on top of the other issues too?!

I received the same as you. I used the cable from my moto z2, not sure how it could have come with anything different than what we received.
Yes Google should have included a USB C to USB A male vs female for sure.

So Google is now responsible for you having a PC without the proper connections to plug your phone in?
Or are they responsible for you not being able to order a Micro USB to USB C adapter for a few bucks?
Which one is it I wonder...

I really want you to be saying this in a sarcastic tone, but since this is the internet and I can't read tone I'm just going to fly into a rage instead.
Are you seriously suggesting that once the pixel 2 comes out everyone on the planet immediately gained the ability to connect USB-C straight to their computers? Or is it that you are seriously suggesting that it is somehow nonsensical to at least include an extra adapter that mates this new cable type to everyone's existing computer connections? Yes we can purchase a crap-ton of adapters that get us from the phone to the ISS but for the minimal cost of this simple connection type and for the cost I paid I would expect that I would be able to connect my development machine to this device in the exact same fashion I've been able to connect EVERY OTHER DEVICE I'VE EVER HAD. They've all been able to connect to my PC out of the box. This is the first time I've opened a new device box and been at a loss for how to immediately get to working on it. Somehow I believe this was an oversight on the part of Google.

Sure sure. Totally an oversight on the part of Google that you did not check which accessoires come with the phone, totally agree.
BTW, what do you think of the included headset? I think the volume is much too low, I can't hear anything. On the other hand, I never had the cables twisted yet!

I... :crying: :silly: ... I'm dead.
My 200 dollar Acer laptop has a USB C port and the provided cable works fine for me. USB C is the modern standard that everyone is moving to. Is it that unreasonable to think that Google would provide cabling for the modern standard that most manufacturers are adopting?
I can't be more happy with this phone.
The only thing I'd improve is to have 4 years of Android updates instead of 3.
In development they will always be on the top because of the open binaries / developers previews etc.
However....I think that over the last years security became a top priority and now a lot of people don't open the boot loader. Even Google disabled android pay when you open it.
And the price is not in favour neither. I think Google needs to release a budget Pixel at lower price...something like 400-450$.
Theres the kernels and some homebrew ROMs.
Feels like this device is hard to work on.
TWRP now fails to decrypt after the February update.
A/B partition seems hard to support so theres no official custom ROMs for Pixel 2.
So far this phone is not what I would recommend for the serial flashers and customizers.
Just a normal phone for normal users.
I see development at Linage, at AICP for our device.
GApps are now available for Android 8.1. Many changes had to be made because of project Treble.
There is development, but for now many ppl look into things on their own and not as collective.

It's something we came up with at Citibank in about 1989 - update to an unused part of storage. If it works, point whatever is using that part of the firmware at the update and use the place the old version sat as the next update space. The update crashed right on the last byte? No problem. You haven't repointed to it, so it's just empty space until the next try. Better than a bricked phone because the battery died right at the end of an update. It's about time Google caught up to the late 80s. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) My only complaint is the SD card - I have to carry an adapter around with me, and keep the SD card and adapter in my pocket. 128GB internal and 256GB external would have been nice. (I already have about 50GB used, and that's with only one TWRP backup.)
Maybe it's time to flash a kernel with speed adjustment, although it seems to be idling around 430-450MHz.
