RSS / Today screen -- comments - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Short version: could someone please recommend an RSS reader that
(1) shows a list clickable unread items in its Today screen plugin (not a scrolling line, but an actual proper list of items, like 10 lines or so)
(2) can auto-update the content (without me having to click anything manually)
Long version:
I was looking for an RSS reader that can show a long list of unread items on the Today screen, so that I can immediately see if anything is interesting, and click to read if I like. I have enough screen space, so I don't want to use a scrolling line.
I found only one reader so far that can show the item list -- Spb Insight. I can tell it how many items I want to see, so I'm very happy with this plugin. Unforunately, Spb Insight has one major shortcoming, which makes it unusable for me: it cannot auto-update the content. I actually have to start the software and tell it to refresh. Many people asked for the auto-update feature on Spb's forums, but it seems the Insight team stopped the development of this product (last update was in early 2007).
I then tried two other excellent readers: Egress and Newsreader. Egress unfortunately only shows a scrolling line on the Today screen, and cannot display a full list of items. Newsreader's plugin is simply worthless: it shows the number of unread items (like I care).
A6.time was a promising product, but the developer shut down last month.
PocketRSS has been abandoned as well, with the last update in June 2006.
Any help much appreciated.

Customising the Today screen list of Items

Simple question, I hope. How do I add to or delete apps from the list on the Items tab (Start / Settings / Today)?
I currently have a list of 9 items, 2 of which are ticked but I can't see how to add or delete from the list.
Not checked items is NOT loaded in memory!
Items can be deleted from registry - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items. Every key under key Items represents settings for one today item - delete it and it disappears from the list in the Today applet.
Thanks. Can you point me to a suitable registry editor?
I guess I'm confused. If the app you're looking for isn't listed in the Items tab for today settings, it's 99.9% likely not to be a today plug-in, so adding it to the list won't help. Even if you did, it wouldn't run properly.
What specifically are you trying to add to Today? If it's an application (like Agenda One) that doesn't have a corresponding Today plug-in (like Pocket Plus or the HTC Home do) then you'll be adding it without much point.
Total Commander CE has good integrated registry editor. Another free PHM registry editor - http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/.
But - every good today plugin has uninstaller and typically there is no need to manually delete items. Be careful and good luck ...
When I installed TomTom it created an entry in the Items list. This was simply a shortcut to itself which appeared at the bottom of my Today screen.
I assumed that you could add any old app to this list and that would make it appear on the Today screen in the same way.
From what you are saying this would appear to not be the case?

On Today screen appear only very special programs ("dlls") with two exported functions. TomTom delivered mentioned special dll.
For other program You want to run from today screen make a link in some "host" Today plugin (Try Great SPB Pocket Plus - http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/?en)

I too have that TomTom shortcut at the bottom right corner of my Today screen. I do see a TomTom registry folder under today items for Today, but under Settings --> Today --> Items, TomTom is unchecked.
So, the question is: how specifically do I remove that shortcut, and how do I add others/another in its place (if I decide to).
FYI, I am using Pocket Plus, Mobile Shell and Phone Suite.
Thx
Update: Sorry for my ignorance. I am still learning WM6. This icon shows that TT is still active and disappears when the program is closed. Palm never had this issue since it can't multi-task.

Applications that just excel over the rest?

I guess I'm hitting on a topic that has had endless discussions and has just plain been posted thousands of times, so it's probably a big annoyance for most of you; however, I have yet to see a concise and informative post or even a website anywhere that helps me get applications for my first Pocket PC, an AT&T Tilt. So if it's not too much trouble could you guys please help me out here? Please follow this format for each application you post:

For me the best application which in fact has prevented me from shifting to Symbian is SoftMaker's Office.
Category = On purchase. This is a suite of Spreadsheet and word processor.
Positives = So powerful that it can do almost what the PC counterpart can do. I need extremely complex spreadsheets even including conditional formatting and drop down lists. Never once I have encountered a situation where there was a mismatch between the desktop and the device. Round trip integrity of documents is just perfect.
Negatives = Not really many except for the steep price but I guess I do not mind this much as the overall functionality it provides is just great.
website = www.softmaker.com

Tomeraider
[db / ebook reader] - £19.95
Application: Tomeraider

Positives: Not just an eBook Reader but SO much more. On my SD card, I have a file containing the whole of wikipedia - it is very, very fast too. You wouldnt know that there were literally millions of articles. I also have IMDB on it too - lots of files available (4000 according to the site) - you can even author your own
Negatives: None found as yet
Rating: 1 being worst - 5 being best: "5+"

[GPS navigation] - around $150, depends on country
Application: iGo MyWay Plus
Description: excellent GPS navigation software
Positives: Best interface that I've ever seen in any GPS software. Extremely convinient and easy to use. Fast, reliable. A lot of infromation on the screen, yet nothing is ever covered by anything, you get the whole view. Has a very large selection of maps. Not sure about others, but California map is very well detailed - last update was in Jan 08 with over 2 million POIs. Nevada map is ecellent too, other states probably the same. Supports TMC, internal/external GPS, speed cameras, excellent voice guidance, day/night skins, various transportation devices, toll road avoidance, and much more stuff.
Negatives: Does not get traffic updates from the web. Rest is minor glitches: If device goes to sleep, it may not return from it if iGo is running (happens very rarely). If phone is on vibrate - switches it to "silent" mode... although maybe this bug has to do with my config/device.

Excellent idea! Should hopefully curb the "Just got my HTC xxx - what programs should I put on it?" posts!
My contributions
[Synchronisation] - £16.00/Free trial
Application: Easy Sync by Pocket Wizards
Description: Excellent program that lets you sync any files from any location on your PC to any location (including microSD) on your PPC
Positives: Much better than Active Sync file transfer. Leave all your files exactly where they are on your PC. Set up a sync partnership for that file using the straightforward wizard and choose where on your device you want to sync the file to. Choose your update frequency and job done - whenever you change the original file, the synced copy also updates. Can set up uni or bi-directional sync, so changes made to PPC version are automatically transferred to your PC file at next Sync. Can be set to trigger when ActiveSync starts up for a fully automated process. Also allows for sync of entire folders.
Negatives: The only one I can think of is that it is compatible with .NetCF 2.0 only, not with 3.5. Other than that, very smooth and stable. Well worth the money.
Rating: 5
Where to get: Handango etc
[Utilities] - Freeware
Application: GroupSMS
Description: Easy way to send SMS to multiple contacts
Positives: Allows you to choose multiple SMS recipients by ticking the boxes, rather than choosing them one by one. Can set this up for different contacts groups too.
Negatives: Can only set up groups via Outlook, although this function is on the creator's To-do list
Rating:4
Where to get: www.shubaroo.com - lots of other great little apps on this website too!
App Launcher
[App Launcher/Today Plugin] - $15
Application: UltimateLaunch 1.2
Description: Tabbed app launcher and today plugin. Animated tab transitions, unlimited tabs, gestures.
Positives: Very customizable, unlimited tabs, custom icons, low memory usage.
Negatives: Learning curve to configure, uses icons instead of png.
Rating: 4
Where to get: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Launcher-Applications/UltimateLaunch-56169.shtml
[SIP Keyboard] - Usually $19.99. But at the moment, $12.98 for two licences. Give one to a friend like I have!
Application: TouchPal 2.0 Professional
Description: Finger/thumb-friendly predictive keyboard with a special technology called T+ where you tap and slide each key in a different direction for different symbols, letter, case, number etc. Many many features including multiple languages, dynamically-resizable keyboard, fast custom word input. Innovative design.
Positives: way too many to list. accurate and quick predictive input due to design of two letters on one key, powerful, looks great, excellent support people who will consider your feature requests VERY quickly, excellent value. Still looks like a normal qwerty keyboard.
Negatives: Some people not used to predictive input may undergo a little learning curve. Try it, it's much faster and with this one, it usually has the word you want as the first one so you can just keep on typing!

Pros:

Slow drawing Programs list not a driver issue? (NOT. Noticed before, you newb)

Hi folks,
A few administrative tasks that will hopefully prevent me from getting flamed:
This is not about Pocket IE scrolling at all, this pertains to clicking Start > Programs and scrolling through that list
I did search for existing topics about this, which can be proven here and here, but the search results were about Pocket IE slow scrolling and not about the Programs list.
This post is about an observation of mine, not a fix. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can find out why the following occurs and can possibly use this to our advantage
So, the issue is that when you go to Start > Programs and try to scroll through that list, the items in the list are drawn very slowly making the device feel sluggish. The cause of this has been attributed to the lack of drivers for the Kaiser.
You need HTC Home to be installed to try this:
Ensure that you have the "Launch Programs Folder" shortcut on the programs tab.
If not, click the red x, delete an existing shortcut and add it by clicking on the green plus.
Now launch the programs folder and try scroll.
Close it and compare the scrolling when launching the programs folder by going to Start > Programs.
Both methods give the exact same display of the programs folder, except that launching it from HTC Home draws the list MUCH faster when scrolling.
Why is this so? Is the programs folder launched in a different 'mode' from HTC Home? Most importantly, can this be used to our advantage for fixing other sluggishness on the device given the lack of drivers?
Now thats strange. I've noticed the difference in drawing speeds before but i'd never realised its because i'd launched it in different ways.
This is indeed an interesting observation. Also true in my case. The plugin scrolling is much faster.
Another thing I notice is that HTC plugin programmes list is slightly different from the Start>Programs list in as much as Total Commander is not listed on my HTC plugin list. So, are thes ways of listing programs looking at different shortcut listings? Or, is there something unusual about Total Commander?

[App] RSS Central

Name: RSS Central v1.1
RSS Central is a powerful and easy to use application that can download and display RSS, Atom and RDF news feeds from web sites all over the internet. Its quick multi-download system will bring all the news feeds you want to your fingertips in no time, and will hold on to them so that they can be read even if you lose your internet connection.
RSS Central features an attractive and informative user interface, categorised news feeds, a feed search to discover new news sources, article summary and full web page displays, article search tools, read/unread article tracking, support for international characters, a useful "send to email" feature, portrait and landscape support, plus a whole lot more.
RSS Central's trial mode is fully featured, and just displays occasional "nag" screens while using the application. Please give it a try and see what you think.
Before getting my Windows Phone 7 device, I had an HTC Touch Pro2. One of the applications that came pre-loaded on it was Ilium software's RSS Hub. This rapidly became one of my most-used applications. When I moved to WP7 I tried a number of the RSS apps that were available, but none of them worked in the way I wanted or offered the features that I was looking for.
In true programmer style, instead of compromising with one of the available alternatives, I set about writing my own application. RSS Central is the result. It is functionally inspired by RSS Hub and uses a similar approach to displaying and organising its content. I also used the opportunity to clean up a few of the little annoyances that I found with RSS Hub. I hope you like the end result!.
I intend to continue developing and enhancing RSS Central, so if you have any comments, suggestions, complaints or bug reports, please let me know and I'll see if I can address them in a future version. As you will see from the version history below, I added lots of new things in version 1.1, and most of these were suggestions from people using the app. I have more enhancements lined up, if there's something you think should be added or changed then please let me know and I'll add it to my list.
RSS Central is available now from the Windows Phone Marketplace.
Key features:
Attractive and functional Windows Phone 7-style user interface.
Streamlined navigation to make using the app as quick and easy as possible.
Fast application startup to get you straight into your feeds without having to wait.
Create categories to group your news feeds together for easier browsing.
Feed search function to help you discover new feeds and news sources.
Quick display of article summaries, or show the full article content with just one touch.
Search for keywords within feeds to help you find articles of interest.
"Minimum refresh time" prevents unnecessary re-downloading of unchanged feeds.
Automatic tracking of read and unread articles. Choose to hide read articles and read subsciptions if you wish.
Full support for international character sets.
Quickly and easily send the details of interesting articles as an email message.
Full support for portrait and landscape orientation.
Reviews from the Marketplace
"Best RSS reader on the market, and I have tried most!" -- irdawood
"Best RSS reader I've seen so far. Worth the price." -- leongustavo
"Love it. I have tried many news and RSS apps and this is the best one." -- Tusker
"This app does exactly what's needed, making it easy to add feeds through searching, categorize feeds and HIDE items that have been read. I've tried about 10 other options in the Marketplace, but this is the one you want if you have a large number of feeds or have varied interests that don't correspond to some of the hard-coded readers." -- Mlizardi
Just tried it on my phone. And I'm impressed.
It's one of these apps which use nice animations all over (I like it )
Also the preinstalled RSS are quite informative. It's surely one of the most appealing RSS Reader out there.
It'll surely stay my RSSReader of choise!
Hi the_Crispy,
Thanks for your message and glad you like it.
I tried my best to get nice-looking animations throughout the app and I'm fairly happy with the result. Silverlight does do a very good job providing tools to get them up and running. It's difficult to decide whether to put the animations in or just get the app released though!
good app but i need a google reader support like in wonder reader. then i will buy it
Very nice app but it doesn't support "windows-1250" encoding. So I'll stick with SimpiReader for now.
Hi libor_m,
It should support whatever encoding the RSS feed specifies -- I spent a fair bit of time working with different encodings to ensure (in particular) that accented characters in non-English feeds displayed correctly.
Can you give me an example of a feed and article that isn't displaying correctly? Then I'll take a look at what's happening.
Thanks,
Hi Adam,
try this one - http://servis.idnes.cz/rss.asp?c=zpravodaj
Thanks for that -- that certainly didn't do what I had expected! Let me see what I can do...
No prob
Just let me know if you will fix it. After a new version will be out, I can test is with more Czech RSS feeds.
Well that was a bit more effort than I had expected: it seems (unless anyone knows different?) that .NET on WP7 doesn't have any support for decoding windows-1250, hence it falling over.
So I wrote my own decoder. Does this look OK?

Looks amazing, nice job adam...spanish support in a future would be nice.
are you planning to integrate a greader support
@BigwaveMx -- thanks, glad you like it! I've not really considered localisation at all at the moment, but it's certainly something I could give some thought to. Are you volunteering to provide the Spanish translations?
@yeahtyeaht -- not at the moment, I'm more interested in keeping this as a stand-alone RSS reader for the time being. Maybe at some stage in the future, but I can't promise. I do hope to offer a feature that would allow feed details to be imported from Google Reader, but that's as far as the integration would go.

Great, this looks perfect!
And I am volunteering for possible Czech translation. I have done a couple of translations for apps in the past already.
Glad it looks good, libor_m
Version 1.2 was submitted to the Marketplace last night, but was rejected after a couple of hours. When I looked at the failure reason, it was completely blank. Nice. Usually it takes several days to even get looked at so I'm hoping this was just a glitch.
I deleted the submission and tried again, and it hasn't been rejected yet, so fingers crossed...
To all of you that have volunteered for translations, many thanks for doing so. I've put "localisation" on to my To Do list, and may well be in touch with you in the near future.
Version 1.2 has finally made it through certification, with the following new features:
* Added context menus for the subscription list. Press and hold one of the subscriptions to display the menu. The menu allows the subscription to be marked as read, marked as unread, refreshed, or edited.
* Added context menus for the article list. Press and hold one of the articles to display the menu. The menu allows articles to be marked as read, marked as unread, sent by email or sent by SMS.
* Added a further minimum update frequency that indicates that the subscription should only be updated manually. These subscriptions will never be included in the update when the Refresh button is pressed on the main subscription list, and are instead individually updated via their context menu.
* Added support for sending article links by SMS.
* Fixed a bug where the article list occasionally jumped back to the top when returning to it after reading an article.
* Added support for reading feeds encoded with Windows-1250 encoding.
* Clicking the "Read more online..." link on the article summary now changes the link text to highlight that it has been clicked. This provides some positive feedback for slow-loading pages.
* A new navigation setting is available to control the back button behaviour on the article page. This can be set to either navigate backwards through the browser history, or to return directly to the article list. If navigating back through the history, a new menu option is available to return directly to the article list to save navigating all the way back.
Hope you like it and as always please let me know if you have any feedback.
Adam, I gave your app a 5-star rating on the Marketplace. It is a shame I cannot buy the app from Marketplace as I am from Czech Republic.
I have found one more problem. I have problems with following feeds:
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
http://google-cz.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
These are giving me a following error: "An error ocurred when this subscription was last refreshed: NullReferenceException"
And one more feed:
http://skrz.cz/rss
This is giving me a following error: "An error ocurred when this subscription was last refreshed: NotSupportedException"
Hi libor_m,
Many thanks for the review, much appreciated! Sorry you can't actually get the full version at the moment.
Thanks too for continuing to spot problem feeds and send them over. I've fixed up the blogspot feeds now, they will all work correctly in the next version.
The skrz.cz feed is causing me more problems though. It's managing to download the content fine and it looks quite normal, but .NET is falling over trying to parse it. It's possibly because it says it's UTF-8 encoded but is actually Windows-1250 encoded, but even it I manually change this it still fails. I'll have to keep looking at this one, I'll keep you posted.
Thanks and regards,

[APP] Notepad v4.0

Name: Notepad
About the app:
The Office app is powerful, but its syncing features slow it down. Notepad by AppsForMe is a great app to choose if you just want to take plaintext notes without the wait. It’s also the only text editor that supports folder structures, and the look of the app makes it feel like a part of the operating system (animations included). You can also pin documents or directories to the Start screen and send documents as emails or text messages.
The app has 4.6/5 stars over 48 reviews.
“Amazing app and it does what it says without any problems. Easily the best Notepad app on the marketplace and the fastest” 5/5
“Superb. You can store email and SMS templates. It makes life a lot easier. Don't miss it.” 5/5
“Very, very, very well done. Thank you.” 5/5
Developer's notes:
I'm always looking for more feedback on Notepad. Unfortunately, I don't get a huge number of support emails, so I'm left up to my own devices to figure out what could be added or needs to be changed.
Please give the application a shot. If you like it, great! If you don't, let me know what's up (in the comments). Chances are I can do something about it. Thanks for reading!
Possible future features (not guaranteed in any way, and not listed in any particular order.)
+ change keyboard theme
+ password-protect
+ lists
+ quick folders (swipe in directory view)
+ "emtpy trash" button
+ scroll sideways on long filenames
+ "import all" to parse "backup all"/"export all"
+ "export all" -> skydrive
+ import from url (skydrive/dropbox)
+ "are you sure?" -> "ready to send?"
+ title of note title -> "document title"
+ custom-name "root"

Thank you!!!
Glad you like it!
Please let me know anything about it that seems weird or cool. I do things a lot differently than all of the other text editor applications, and I want to know what's good and what's not.
Wow really good Idea ! I have searched this for Quick Notes ( i use on the PC often the Editor ) and I would use a similiar App on the Phone ...
Thank you!!! i need this for school
simple and does what it says, good app
Notepad Suggestion
First, great Notepad app. I would just like to add a password to a note file.
Thanks!
It's good to see interest in the application! Notepad just hit 15,000 downloads today, and I'm always looking to make that number higher, so the more suggestions you guys have the better.
So far I'm seeing requests for:
(1) a new live tile, particularly for pinned documents/directories
(2) change the name of the "root" directory (to what, though, I wonder?)
(3) password-protect documents
(4) implement lists as well as documents
Anyone have any other suggestions, or want to plus-one a feature?
--AppsForMe
Guess you had missed our review. Skydrive Integration and ability to send notes as attachment.
Yes, I definitely saw your review! I actually did implement two of your suggestions (preview of content when pinned, ability to move folders).
Here's how I feel about your other requests:
First, the Windows Phone operating system prevents third-party developers (read: me) from sending email attachments. Same goes for speech-to-text.
Second, as soon as you want SkyDrive, you should just be using Office. The Office app supports either (a) local files without folders, or (b) SkyDrive files with SkyDrive folders. Goodness knows that I can never match the Office app for stability, integration, features, or UI. Plus, Notepad's other sell is that it's fast--loading notes, saving notes, navigating folders--implementing web functions would slow everything wayyyy down. I see the lack of SkyDrive as a selling point.
(Side note: Office supports sending documents as attachments. Two birds with one stone!)
Notepad for WP the best
I think the requests thus far are pretty much what is missing although it seems it's going to be an uphill battle due to OS restrictions. Installed the app last week on my Lumia and it's amazing, clean and easy to use. Keep up the good work.
I used to use this app, but it had this bug where i could not scroll to the bottom of the longer note. Has that been resloved in the meantime?
Also, I think skydrive sync is important (or even dropbox). When someone changes phones, how is he going to transfer notes?
thank you i need this apps
All the problems with long notes have been fixed.
I'm going to leave the auto-syncing between SkyDrive and the phone up to the native Office application--it does it better, faster, and more reliably than I ever could.
If you need to back up your documents, use the "backup all" feature to email yourself the text of the documents.
Hi Isaac,
Great app. I registered here just to say that, and thank you. I'm a note taking person but one that wants to keep them organize and your app is the only one that does it with ease. (I must of downloaded a dozen to try and removed..only one other did folders, the rest was just one giant list of notes).
If you're serious about taking users feedback, here are some of mine...all are minor little things that are mostly ui based and these are just my opinions. I think your application here is quite impressive so take these only to help out for those you agree with..
- replace 'root' with 'home' or 'my folders' perhaps?
- replace 'Remarks' when creating a new directory with 'Note: ' or remove the word entirely and place the remark note under the text field.
- titles of Directories and Notes become all lower-cased when viewing
- clicking the back button when in Search mode hides the keyboard only, so it requires clicking the back button again to exit the search function..this may be an OS thing I've seen and not something that can be changed unless you can find a way around this.
- add a Folders button at the bottom when in a non root directory to take you back, just like how it appears when in a note to take you back to its directory.
- when in a directory, can the word Notepad and the Directory name on top take you back to the folder list view or one folder out if in a subfolder?
- possible to allow user to choose which directory(ies) to list mango-syle to the right where they can swipe to the right and to go into that directory (sorry if this is unclear, I'm not too familiar with WP terminology yet)
- Button to empty trash when viewing trash directory. btw, how does the trash work..deletes automatically after so long?
- when viewing a file that has a long filename (and the feature is turned on), can it scroll?
- reduce space between documents filenames ..currently lists 5 before needing to scroll?
- backup all..cool feature. I would change 'Are you sure?' which sounds a little scary to something like 'Ready to Send?' btw, can you import back into Notepad? If note, perhaps call the feature 'email all' instead for now..
- when creating a new note it shows 'new document', the next screen where it ask for the file name it displays 'new note' ..just a consistence thing
- are all notes saved as txt files on the device? what if you remove the .txt? does it need to be displayed if it's automatically saving them as txt files.
- Can titles of notes and directories names be the system's accent color and turn black when choosing them? ..the reverse essentially.
- when adjusting toggle sliders in Settings, the phone wants to swipe to it's neighboring page a little too freely (btw, love all the settings you have here!)
- remove the larger 'root' when in the root directory list to gain some real estate back to see more directories and so it's not repeating perhaps?
And if you need any simple graphics help, I can help out.
I'd love to see Dropbox support with everything being saved to dropbox and loaded from dropbox. I'd even pay for a dropbox enabled version.
Can it handle long text file ?
Can it import text file from skydrive?
Can we Password lock the app or folder?
thanx
First: Thanks, Lumiame, for the excellent feedback. You've greatly extended the set of features I'm considering adding, and you've noted UI inconsistencies and confusions that I'll make sure to address in the next update.
To everyone who's commented so far: thanks for the good feedback. This quarter at my university is slower than my last quarter, so I should be able to get to work on the app.
Look for a good number of changes in the next updates.
thanks for sharing
