Hi, I have a Tilt and do not have a problem tethering to a single computer. What I would like to do is share with all four computers in my home. I have tried bridging the sharing connection to my lan connection and have gotten dhcp on the Tilt to assign addresses to all computers on the network, but they still can't ping each other (other than the tilt and the computer its directly tethered to. I have turned off all firewalls and still nothing. Rebooted everything. Still nothing. Is it possible to do this? Thanks for any help.
There's a program around here somewhere that allows you to make your TILT a wireless router. If you do this, any machine with wi-fi can connect to the SSID and go.

Could I have it connect with my current wireless router to provide internet to my wired network through the rj45 ports on the router ? 3 of the 4 computers are on a wired lan. You see, we just got HSDPA on Monday and I love it. I got a bit ahead of myself and cancelled my home DSL connection. Now I'm realizing that I am stuck with only having one computer on the internet at a time. This has got to be possible. - I just found the thread on setting up as a wireless router. I will start playing with it. Any suggestions/instructions are appreciated.
OK, get connected to your carrier whilst tethered.
Then from any Explorer window on your tethered PC, select, 'Set up a home or small Office Network'.
Select the first option in the following box 'This computer directly connects...' and follow it through.
This should set up your Activesync PC as an IP address of 192.168.1.1. (an access point IP)
If you connect any other PC/laptop to this PC via wireless or LAN (you do know how to do that I hope??) to this computer, it will share the internet connection..
Remember, this will change any prior Internet configuration you have on the PC/Laptop!

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to try that again. The first time I tried that I found out that the Tilt had already assigned itself the address of 192.168.0.1 . On the XP machine, the computer will always use that same address to share its connection, so it immediately complained that another computer on the network is already using the required address for internet connection sharing. Maybe all I need to do is force the Tilt to use a different ip address like 192.168.0.10? I am not sure how to do that since this is my first time using Windows Mobile as part of a network sharing its connection. The only reference I could find to 192.168.0.1 in the registry was HKLM\Comm\BTPAN1\Parms\TcpIp. Should I change that?

NO, 192.168.0.1 or 2.1 or.3.1 are all access point AD's.
You have to go into your PC/laptop Network Places icon to tel IT to then share the connection.
I am sorry, but if you have never shared an internet connection on your PC before (ie via modem or ADSL), you will not really understand how it is done.

They both are using 192.168.0.1 as the default ip address and as far as I tell there is not a way given to change that. The Tilt automatically uses 192.168.0.1 and when you using the sharing wizard on the pc it also uses the same address for its network card thats connected to the home wired network. Unfortunately for me, two devices on a network cannot have the same ip address. There must be a way...

OK, set all computers on the network to fixed IP's of 192.168.0.xxx in Internet protocol (under TCPIP on network)with the same subnet mask with a default gateway matching your device! Try that...

That was my first attempt at a work around. The problem is that there are
actually two network connections to the pc. One for the Tilt (usb) and one for the LAN (nic card). They don't seem to see each other even when they have matching ip addresses and subnets. Thats why I tried right clicking them and selecting "bridge these connections." It seems that internet sharing "requires" DHCP to be used. I tried setting all the computers to use DHCP and actually had the Tilt assigning ip addresses to all of the computers on the network by bridging the two connections and using dhcp. Oddly, though, the computers on the network could not ping the Tilt. I think its because bridging uses the data link layer of the osi networking model?
There must be a hack to change the ip address that windows uses for the sharing access point. Alternatively, it would be nice if there were a device out there that could act as a hub to network usb and 100baseT devices together. In other words, plugging usb and cat5 cable rj45 plugs into the same box and having them all be on the same network.
OK, I have asked smitty to get on this but both of us are WAYYYYy past our bedtimes.

I can't make this work. I don't have WiFi on all of my computers. I was hoping to use WMWifiRouter to connect to my wireless router and then to my whole wired network. Is there a way to make the Tilt wireless router to connect with another wireless router? I'm thinking what I will do is go back to an AT&T rom and use "wireles modem" instead of "internet sharing". That way I can share the modem with the whole network. There doesn't seem to be a good way to use the Tilt internet sharing with the whole network. What do you guys think?

For any future readers of this thread: I put the stock AT&T rom back on this phone and did a soft reset during the initial boot to stop the bloatware from loading. I went to start>settings>connections and tapped the wireless modem icon to open the app. I selected "usb" and tapped done then plugged the usb into my computer. My win xp computer found the new modem hardware and installed the HTC modem driver. I then setup a new dialup connection on my computer, and used the following to setup the login and dial:
username: [email protected]
password: cingular1
dial #: *99***1#
When I clicked on dial, it quickly connected to the AT&T network and I had internet access on my computer! I went to a speed test website and clocked my download speed at 1.2mbs and upload at 300kbs. I then opened "my network" and started the network setup wizard. I selected "this computer connects directly to the internet" and "file and printer sharing". To make a long story short, I am now able to share the Tilt's HSDPA internet connection with my whole network! I could not do it using the internet sharing function of the Tilt with either the AT&T rom or the kaiser rom. It would be awesome if someone more educated than me could make this function part of the HTC kaiser rom.

I have same problem. I agree with Nojnaworb, this is the reason why its not working.
I have no Wifi at home and have to use LAN for my home network (2 PC + 1 ppc).
Under WM5 it was easy to share Internetconnection with all Lan adapters.
I cannot believe there is no way.

Its really quite simple.
You dont connect all the computers to the tilt. You use ICS on the tilt to provide one pc with an internet connection.
You then share the internet connection from that pc to the other pc's using the networking wizard.
I think part of this persons problem was that he needed to bridge the 2 connections.

You should be able to connect the Tilt, (let it use whatever address it wants) and then make a bridge from the tilt to your nic in the server. Then I beleive you just use internet connection sharing to disperse the lovely packets to the rest of the network. Without the bridge, there is no way to share from one network to another.
I'm pretty sure that you will need to set the address to 192.168.0.2 on the server or any other number were the 2 is. If your using a router then I would suggest turning off dhcp and not using the WAN port on it. Just treat the router like a switch/hub because it will just makes things even harder to figure out.

Yes it is. If the router is on the default settings you just need to touch the antrenna symbol at the bottom of the Today screen, then the green square at the bottom right, then the WLAN box and turn on WLAN.

Depends on the router, what ya got?
I dont have a router, I have a WI-FI PCI card and my router is conected via ethernet
So you are trying to set up an ad-hoc connection.
You need to set your wireless on both the computer and the PDA to ad-hoc.
To do this on the PC depends on your operating system and device. Set up your wireless connection on the PC first making sure it is set up as an ad-hoc network.
On your XDAIIi Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Network Cards
You should see the network you have set up on the PC, make sure the ad-hoc box is ticked and connect to it.
You may have to set the TCP/IP settings manually. If you have a problem with doing that post up what you have done and how far you have got.

Do you have the DHCP server turned on on the router?
Yes1 DHCP server IS turned on on the router.
OK, when you are connected and you click on the Wi-Fi icon on the bottom of the screen, does the network address match that of the router or has it set a default one?
Internet Connection Sharing
Depeding on your OS (is it windows/linux etc.) you'll nmeed to set up some form of proxy server or other packet forwarding to persuade the machine to accept packets on the WiFi card and to forward them to the Internet.
If you are using XP (or from memory 2K) you can switch on Internet connection sharing, follow the wizard and then browse to your hearts content.

I also have a laptop with build-in Wifi and a qtek 2020i. I've shared the lan connection on the laptop and created a wirelles network. The laptop and qtek 2020i see each other but i can't surf on the qtek. i have windows XP.
The ip address on the qtek is fixed by default and is supposed to be 192. etc i read somewhere...
I use a modem/routeur (thomson 530) on which the laptop is connected (lan).
Could you please explain me how should i setup or manuallay choose the ip on my qtek?

I have O2 XDA 2i. I changed RADIO. Was 1.00.00 now 1.03.00. No problem with connection straight to Wi-Fi router!!!

Hi Guys,
This is starting to get confused - there are two types of connection being set up here: -
Firstly a cabled connection between the PC and the router with a wireless card in the PC. in this instance you need to forward the packets from the wireless card to the ethernet card and then onto the router.
In this case, if you are using Windows 2K or XP use the Internet connection sharing wizard, this will then enable packet forwarding on your PC, with a "DHCP server" (not fully functional) on the wireless card, when you establish the Ad Hoc (set exactly the same SSID on both cards - remember it's case sensitive and that should be all you need for Ad-Hoc) wireless connection between the 2020i and the PC you should then find that you are assigned an IP address (192.168.0.x is the default from memory). You should then have the IP address of the Wireless Interface Card on the PC set as your default gateway and DNS server - you need each of these entries in order to able to connect to the Internet.
If you want to secure this connection, you can use WEP (40 bit or 128 bit Same Key same position on both SSID configs), though remember that if a sniffer collects about 300K packets, it is possible to use AirCrack to regain the wep key - paranoid but true.
If you have a wireless gateway, this should (in all probability) already have a DHCP service up and running on it (it's probably giving your PC all of the IP settings it needs) so all you should need is to establish a connection between these two devices. Switch wireless on on the 2020 and you should be prompted with a message box saying Your_SSID connects you to and offer you work and Internet, select Internet if there is a WEP key or other form of encryption enabled you will be prompted for a key. In theory you will have set all of this up on the router in the first place so probably have some idea of what you are doing.

I tried it last night and it got it working in about 5 minutes!! was well pleased . I'm using the infrastructure mode, got a XDAIIi and a D-Link G604T. I dont have any authentication setup, the only thing I use is the MAC based access list, so I had to add the XDA MAC into the router access list and for the rest I followed what the above link said.
Tip: make sure you do a reset for the settings to take effect, did'nt realise thats why it took me five minutes!

Hi all, I have a weird problem.
I have a tilt and am using the HTC rom, I connect to wifi in my apartment and 3G or HSDPA when I leave the apartment.
When I'm connected through wifi, my Slingplayer works flawlessly, finds my slingbox, and plays the video. When I try to connect outside using 3G/HSDPA, I get "Cannot connect with current connection settings"
I know the Slingbox is working correctly because I can connect to it through a desktop PC without a problem, and I know that the 3G works fine on my tilt because I have no problem loading websites, using mundi, etc.
Any ideas? I've seen a couple other posts on other forums with the same problem but there were no responses on them.

Can you connect to anything else when on 3G?
Try your proxy settings
Did you change the default ports on the SlingBox config?
Are those ports (default or modified) open from the outside of your firewall/router?
If you have the ability to monitor inbound connections try monitoring while you connect through 3G and see if your device attempts on the correct port and that it is NATed to the correct IP and port.

I had exactly the same problem with my Belkin router. You need to set up a port on your router in order for it to work. I know on mine it involved setting up a virtual server.
I am using the TyTN II and I am having the same exact problems. I think AT&T killed access to slingbox somehow. I can surf the internet just fine, and then as soon as I start the slingplayer, my connection gets lost and my phone says "cannot sonnect with current connection settings." Any help would be appreciated, especially with the World Series coming up this week.

Possibly a silly point but can you definitely connect over the internet to it? Or just over your LAN?
There's a wizard that enables the port forwarding for you - (called Remote Viewing or something?) should be with the software for the slingbox.
Could be that your desktop is just going direct over the LAN?
Also, I had problems when I was just using the automatic settings to configure the box - in the end it works far better if you ignore the UPnP stuff, and use the manual setup process (or so I found). Again, the desktop software wizard steps you through this.
If you can connect over wifi at home, but not over wifi or 3g when away, then unless AT&T are blocking the ports, its more likely your router settings, as at home you are inside your LAN but elsewhere you have to go through your routers hardware firewall.
Just have a look at slingbox's help files.
SlingBox works fine on AT&T. Check your proxy settings on the phone. Try the "remove hidden proxy" cab. The home router also needs an outgoing port defined as well. Good Luck, I know it can work.
I will bet that it's your router/firewall blocking the incoming net traffic. Try connecting to it from a Friend's internet connection or a public computer at the library or something.
Had a similar problem with slingplayer mobile on my new HTC TouchPro- phone from Vodafone but I put in my T-mobile SIM as I wanted to keep the Web and walk.
Slingplayer worked fine from Vario3 with same sim but not from TouchPro. Eventually unticked the use proxy server in the connection settings and it started to work. Weird, as on the Vario the proxy box is ticked and it works.
Anyway, worth trying if anyone else is having problems.
One of two things, either you have not port fowarded your router to allow the Slingbox to be remotly viewed, go to portfoward.com for exact instructions for your specific router, or your hidden proxy is messing with it. More than likley its not port fowarded correctly. BTW...when your in your home network, i.e... using WiFi, it will work without the router being fwded because your slingbox is already inside your home network. When coming from the outside of your home network through 3g or whatever your router has to allow access to the slingbox.

I've searched LOADS of threads but to no avail.
I have installed RDM, but can't get it to connect. The PC is XP PRP, and my laptop connects ok (running Vista), but with the same settings on my MDA III, it refuses with the error:
"Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
1. Specified computer name or ip does not exist
2. A network error occurred while establishing the connection."
I've checked all my settings, left DOMAIN blank, disabled firewall etc.
Router is a NetGear.

Is your laptop that works within your internal network or from an external network?
To what IP address are you trying to connect to (ie. should NOT be an internal 192.168.x.x or 10.3.x.x address)?
Do you have port forwarding or a DMZ enabled on your router?
Are you assigned a static IP address from your provider?

I am having the same problems, but I can get a little bit further, I believe connected, but error message,
"The system could not log you on. Make sure your log on and password are correct, etc. With the little magnifing window on the lower right, then is disconnects after a bit. I use the correct password and case that I use to succesfully connect from other computers. I am stumped.

a little late I know......but when I get this error while using GPRS/3G to connect........I just initiate an internet connection using the IE button.....then with that running go to start menu and execute the remote desktop again.......and it connects fine.
a little bit of trouble but that is my work around for it.

No port forwarding, no can do. That router has to know which IP needs that port.
Ok, well basically my end need is to have my Google Calendar synced to my phone on which I have no service or access to WiFi internet. I'm in Iraq right now, and the only internet I have is via Ethernet.
I am hoping to, at the least, sync my calender over USB. But one thing I'd love to do is share my internet connection to my phone via USB like WinMo does. That way I can mess with new roms and the such while I'm out here. Thing is, it can't have it's own IP address because all IP's are assigned and I have to log in via my browser on my computer once I'm connected. It's a pain in the ass.
But, any help would be great. Thanks!
I am pretty sure there is not a way to do what you are asking. Without wifi or and kind of data signal, there is no way to connect the gmail servers to your phone. I am pretty sure that usb is out of the question, which seems to be your only option.

I don't know exactly how the IP shiz works with ICS, but the ISP out here uses 192.168 IP's. All I know is that the phone would need to not have an IP, or something along those lines, for it to work. IDFK....

Use of a regular cheap broadband router with integrated wifi WILL do what you are looking to do...
You might need to clone your computer's MAC address to the router's WAN device, then it'll connect to the DHCP server, then using EITHER the computer OR the phone, go to the browser and authenticate.
Note: I don't think that there is really any way to network the phone to the computer using USB, though bluetooth IS an option... it'll be a console-only operation though.
Final option is to get your hands on a wifi device for the computer (can be a USB device) and run it as a NAT, i.e. use iptables.

They don't care what the MAC is, just IP's. I can get a WiFi router if I need to. But, if I turn off DHCP on the router, does it still need it's own IP address? Or does it just act as a switch? All IP configuration is done on the device, there is no DHCP ran by the ISP.

The cheap broadband router has TWO IP addresses. The public IP address assigned by the ISP's DHCP server (or manually if the ISP doesn't have DHCP), and the PRIVATE IP address used to communicate with the other devices that you hook up to it. It uses NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation ) to connect the client machines to the public network. To the public network, it appears that there is ONLY ONE machine connecting -- the NAT box (router) itself.
You will leave the DHCP *SERVER* (LAN SIDE) running on the router, you will disable the DHCP *CLIENT* (WAN SIDE) and configure the WAN IP/NETMASK/DNS/GATEWAY to the specifications required by the ISP. You will use the router's WAN port to connect to your ISP, you will use any LAN port to connect to your computer, and you will use the WiFi to connect to your phone. You will then have private IP addresses assigned to your computer and your phone, and these devices will be able to connect through your ISP's network via the router.
So doing that the ISP will see my router as my computer, then both my phone and computer can connect at the same time because they'll have their own private IP?

I used to use my Diamond connected via USB and the 'Internet Sharing' function to provide Internet access to my laptop running Vista without any problems whatsoever...
However I have recently upgraded to Vista and don't seem to be getting anywhere... or rather getting somewhere but not far enough!
Specifically, I can connect the Diamond to the laptop via USB and run 'Internet Sharing' on the device. Having hit Connect and connected to the Internet (confirmed my running a browser on the Diamond) the laptop detects a 'Remote NDIS Internet Sharing Device' in the Device Manager. It then adds a connection in Network Connections but seemingly-fails to get any further. It looks like the DHCP requests are falling on deaf ears and without an IP address it's not going to get far beyond that...
Anyone with any ideas? Or, at the very least, could someone confirm that they have got Internet Sharing working with Windows 7, even if they didn't necessarilly have to do anything special?

Typical... you think you've tried everything, you've exhausted Google and posted a forum post as a last resort plea for help.... Five minutes later you sort it! Mustn't moan I suppose... and in case anyone else hits this problem here's how to sort it:
The problem was calling out to me really - DHCP. I had Layer 2 connectivity but without establishing anything at Layer 3 it simply wasn't going to work so if statically asign the IP address then I could at least rule DHCP out of the equation to see what additional hurdle, if any, had to be then tackled.
The problem was that without knowing the address at the other end (i.e. the Diamond) then I wouldn't know what subnet to put my laptop in. However, this all worked fine on Vista so I fired it up and ran Wireshark (network packet sniffer) and could see that the laptop was being given an IP address from the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet and that the other end (whether that be the Diamond or some virtual device that at least representa it) was sat on 192.168.0.1. Strangely, the other end had a MAC address of 82:00:60:0F:E8:00 and the laptop 80:00:60:0F:E8:00 - whilst they're not globally assigned this must be what Microsoft use on the local link for these types of connections.
So, back to Windows 7, I fired up Internet Sharing and connected to my ISP. I now had a LAN connection listed on the laptop under Network Connections so I forced a static address assignment by right-clicking it and selecting Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) > Properties and assigning the following:
IP Address: 192.168.0.80 (choose anything within 192.168.0.2-254 but stay away from anything you might already have assigned to other connection e.g. wireless/wired Ethernet etc)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Hit OK and then, being the Microsoft way, you will likely need to bruteforce the new application of the new setting by disconnecting and reconnecting the Internet Sharing connection. The LAN connection on the laptop will disappear and reappear, hopefully with a static address assigned (right-click it and select Status - DHCP should be disabled).
I still don't know why DHCP was failing but regardless I've got what I wanted - shared access to the Internet!
