Kaiser Current draw at full processor load?

I am attempting to build a small 4xAA USB charger to use while on long flights so that I can watch movies. I notice that the wall charger is rated 5v 1000ma. I wonder if anyone has any clue what the Kaiser draws at full processor load. I can make a 4x AA charger with a 1000ma capacity, but if i could get away with something like a Minty Charger(2xAA, maybe like 500ma), I would, as the plans are there, and it would save me 15 bucks for a switching voltage regulator.
Has anyone done any work to this effect, and would they mind sharing their measurements?

My plan basically calls for 4 aa batts wired in series to provide 6v, into a 5v switching voltage regulator, and out to USB. Will this be something that will work, or are there any odd little caveats i need to worry about?

The USB spec calls for a max of 500mA at 5V. Since the Kaiser can charge off of USB, then that should work.

I can't see any reason to bother building my own. I use this vary one, for just the same reasons you want one. And it works great.

Wow! I suppose I should have done a little more research first That charger costs the same as a decent switching voltage regulator.
Does that thing look like it's easy to open up? I may wish to modify it slightly so that I can charge other USB devices off it. I also probably want to repackage it into something fun.

I'm scratching my head re this one. The tilt and the kaiser are, with very few exceptions the same phone. I would imagine that the battery chargers here are the same too, though this one is a couple bucks cheaper. The AAA model is only 10 bucks... I imagine that all these things are is a voltage regulator and an LED... if i am gonna rip one apart anyways, is there any reason i couldnt get the AAA model, tear it up, jack 4 AA batteries to it, and get all the benefits of the 15 dollar model, for 10? Im not really penny pinching, though if i decide to repackage the whole deal anyways, might as well save the 5 bucks and buy a USB jack

You might want to check that giving the phone 5 volts will actually put it into charge mode. I believe the mot razar won't charge off the USB unless it first communicates with the computer. Don't know though, I only borrowed the phone for a week when traveling for work.
As for power consumption, I took a 10 hour trip yesterday. Bought a USB car charger and used the data cable that came with the phone. I plugged it in and it went into charge mode. Running tomtom and such didn't charge the battery to any meaningful extent while it was plugged in. Fortunately, it didn't drain the battery either.
Maybe the phone knows the diff between USB and an OEM charger, and draws power accordingly (500mA for usb, 1 amp for OEM charger).
Edit: the car usb thing I picked up is rated for 5v +-.5 volt and 1 amp output (says the sticker anyway). Does the job I was hoping for and was cheap (6 bucks at fry's).

I think im gonna order 2 of the battery chargers linked above. one i will keep stock (i leave for spain in a few weeks and need one to work)
the other i will rip apart and see if i can do something fun and exiting with it. I think i have an empty altoids box around somewhere.... the one i used to hide smokes from the parents in when I was a kid....

Note that the Tytn II's charge circuitry may require more than 500 mA if the battery is sufficiently discharged. In such conditions, a 500 mA charging current won't actually charge the battery. A 1000 mA charging circuit should be sufficient, as that matches the device's rating as specified in the manual.

I can't see any difference in these two. I've had this one for over a year and half. I used on the 8125, the 8525, and now the Tilt.
As far as a AAA ver a AA, since the voltage is the same between the two, then it is only a question of mAh capacity.

I have one thing to say if your coming into America with some home made electronics your going to be thrown in Jail ...

I've actually taken a suitcase full of half built circuit boards and electrical components as carry on (half finished school project). They didn't even raise an eyebrow. As long as it isn't connected to something that looks like a bomb, I don't think they care.

thanks, i surmised that based on some other devices i have. I'm not too concerned as the battery will never (hopefully) get critically low. I'd like to jsut keep the thing running for ~9 hours while running either GPS or a movie... I hate plane rides, and i need something to do to entertain myself. I'll see what the charger mentioned above can put out. I just ordered two, and we'll see what it looks like... I'll write a review when i have had time to play with it a bit.

I've had Archos portables for years and it also has a 5V input. A simple 4 cell pack using 2300-2900 NiHi AA batteries in series will easily power these devices for over 10 hours straight. What's nice is that you don't need any regulator at all, just don't use alkaline batteries in it as you'll be at 6V. I carry a very small 4-cell charger to charge the cells. Works great for long travel. I took an iPod version with battery fuel gague, stripped out their power supply and just kept the power switch and fuel gague circuit. This costs more but works really well and looks good too.

So this thread is of some use to others: here are some data that i collected regarding current draw:
Locked with the screen off, no apps running: 1-4ma
TCMP playing a movie fullscreen: never more than 350ma
TCMP Playing in background with tomtom navigator 6 running: 416ma
all done in flight mode with the backlight set to the middle.

Can you you do a worst case test for current draw?
Turn on GPS, bluetooth, Wifi, backlight max and not flight mode.

My solution to the battery problem

No matter how you look at it, the battery life of Diamond is dismal. You can only last a day if you don't watch movies, if you don't listen to music, if you don't use GPS. But then, why did we buy this phone if we won't be able to use it?
I was fed up with it, so I bought an emergency charger like the one you can see here:

Now I can use normal AA batteries to charge my Diamond. A rechargeble battery of 2700 mAh can charge it 3 times which will last the day no matter how much you use it.
So if you carry around a few normal AA batteries with such a small charger like I do, you don't have a battery problem anymore...

Very good idea. It is one more thing in our pocket, but it can be very usefull in some cases.

The American Diamond comes with a 1340 mAh battery... So it shouldn't be as troublesome as your 900 mAh power source.

A 1340 mah battery would last only 50% longer than the standard one. A charger like mine with an AA battery would make the phone last 300% longer. You only have to carry one more thing in your bag.

With your cigarettes, your wallet, your keys, etc.

It's obviously not as efficient because it only uses 1 battery, but it's a lot smaller.

I used one of those at Glastonbury this year on my old nokia n73 all it does is give you an emergency charge say 2 bars on a nokia. Enough to make a few quick calls.

According to some specs I have seen for the "HTC Victor" on the Sprint network, the thickness of the phone increases to 0.6 inches from 0.5 Inches (14mm from 11.5mm)
I for one would be happy to add an extra 2.5mm to my phone to get the increased battery life.
I believe its a bulkier battery with a deeper back cover.

All HTC devices have crap battery life, its generally because people use them for things other than phones. Im sure if you did all what is stated on a normal phone then it wouldnt last much longer than a day as well. I know my Sony Ericsson will probably only last 2 days if I just have a bluetooth headset connected, and thats without making any calls, watching videos or listening to music.
Top Tip, carry a travel USB cable with you, youre never to far from a PC... When Im away on business I keep my diamond and TyTn plugged into the lappy all the time.

Car charger
I use a car charger. It is more practical.

I have no battery problems at all with my Diamond. The battery was pretty bad at first (would only last a day), but now it's fine and I can get 3-4 days out of a single charge.

In-car charger plus desktop charger when at work. Result? Infinite battery life!

Im with the fella above,
Bought an extra mini-usb cable and carry all the time with me.
I have in the car some of those carchargers with usb out (of a non working FM-RAdio USB that bought for 4 euros), at home i use the DC charger at the office i connect it to the laptop.
All HTC have battery problems and diamong beeing a small unit, its a price to pay.
Same to the iphone in 3G mode.

to be honest since i bought the phone and charged it a couple of times, i get a 3 days tops usage with music, calls and all the other clicking. i don't know about you guys, but so far i'm quite happy with my batery life, and i haven't been using it for more than 3 weeks yet.
and in case i will eventualy have this issue, a spare batery will do the job

My bat life is also OK now. Any of you guys considered to buy a spare bat - it's the smallest soultion I think, but of couse you need rebooting the phone.

But what you say is true... I have an old SE that is used only to wake me up... it lasts at least 1 month without charging !

In JAPAN the solar charging systems comes to town in a small stick around the back of the phone that allows to use less batt power... keeping it safe more time... i saw in tv and i never search in google for it... if one is trying to do it please post something about...

Question to people who own Google's N1 CAR Dock

To those of you who are using the OFFICIAL Google N1 car dock...
More specifically, to those of you who used it for longer periods of time (1hr+) on the dashboard, in the sun..
I know the dock will get really hot, but what about the N1? It's hard to see on the dock pics, does the dock cover the phone completely from the sun? It does look kinda enclosed, so does that help N1 to stay cooler or the opposite, doesn't allow it to air-cool?
I'll be making long roadtrips, using N1 navigation, and I worry about it getting too hot, and thus damaging the battery.

At least when you're using navigation, you only really have to worry about the GPS connection, as the 3G idles once it's cached the route (which I'm sure you know already anyway). My phone does get fairly warm when I'm using navigation + playing music for extended amounts of time, but not to the point where I'm worried about it. If you're gonna be driving for a LONG time, and don't mind the inconvenience, you can see if it still works with the battery removed, that way there's no question as to whether or not it's damaging the battery....or you could go for one of those 2 batteries for $20 deals on ebay and slam in a battery you don't care about.

Thanks for the good advice.
However, I want to know about the google car dock and how hot does the phone get while in the sun.

My battery hit 53C (or 127F) while I'm on GPS, Pandora, and the car dock positioned under the sun. I have no doubt it'll kill your battery. But I'm not worried since a spare battery is only $25. Cheaper on eBay I'm sure. At the rate I'm going I'll be surprised to get a year's worth of charging cycles on my current battery.

i took a 2 hour road trip, using navigation the whole time. pulled the phone out of the dock once i reached destination, and didn't think it felt hot at all.

It gets pretty hot for me too. The best thing you can do is use SetCPU and set up a profile so when it reaches a certain temperature have it down clock the processor.

SetCPU is not a good solution for me due to several reasons.
I was mostly wondering if the "enclosing" type of dock (the one that covers the phone completely) will keep the phone cooler, or the opposite, allow it to build up heat... that's basically the question..
I have a chinese one-size-fits-all dock that works, but most of the N1 is open to direct sun. Which I don't like.. hence, this thread.

Turn on your ac and activate the windshield defroster vent. That will keep the air temp around the device much cooler than it otherwise would be.

mmm... Yeah.. I guess putting my N1 into a zip-lock bag and drowning it in liquid nitrogen would help too..

Technically, phone doesn't care that much, it's the battery. LiIon batteries hate heat, they degrade in heat pretty fast.
That makes me reconsider buying the google car dock =(

Actually, frequent prolonged heat will destroy LIB pretty damn fast, about twice as fast as when in room temperature.
Oh and my second official battery was free, I called google and they sent me one for free.

WOW! Did you just call them up and say that the battery isn't charging or something? Did you have to send the other battery back? Would be nice to get a free battery! Which toll-free number did you call?

We had a fairly hot sunny weather last week, it was almost +35C (95F), I had running Waze (nav), Online Radio, and 30 minutes later - got a phone call (phone was paired to car's BT). Well, Nexus crashed, or, more precisely - hang. I had to remove battery to revive it. Nexus was HOT! I mean - so hot, that it was painful to hold it in my hand!
Btw, idea to turn on a window defroster would not work well in my car - defrost is available only in 2 modes: 1) defrost only 2) defrost+feet warming. So, it is either nexus or me sweating
I am trying to think of adding a small fan at the back of google car dock. Shouldn't it help a bit?!
Another idea friend gave me - to use an aluminum duct tape, and stick it to the back side of the dock to create a reflective layer to protect from sun. I like it, will try today.

Well, it's not brighter then the reflection from windshield or headlights
But now I think that this thing not gonna help. Found couple discussions on Nexus support forum. Apparently, the problem is not about sun, but more related to the hard charging by the dock. Looks like that instead of regular 1A of current as desktop changer use, car dock is pushing 2A.
If that is the reason, then the only solution to overheating problem would be to not connect a power line, converting a dock into a primitive $55 phone holder.

same here i got a free battery from htc cause i am still in the one year warranty, i just told them that when i use to charge the battery to 100% it goes down to 82% percent in less than 10 minutes that's what i told them and they said that if i was using wifi or gps and i told nope ...so they send me a new battery i am still using the old battery ..and have a new one just in case......just make sure u don't even think about telling them your phone is rooted...or was cause you wont get jack.....

if your worried about the battery heating up do what others say and just buy an extra battery. im sure it gets fairly hot. i live in texas and is also something that worries me but i will still buy this car doc but place it in an area that the son will not hit it. lots of alt locations for me that will be in good eye location.

Non removable battery

I'm surprised to see not much talk of this, as for me it's the biggest hang up with this awesome device (second is no sd slot). I find it extremely handy to have a removable battery because 1) I don't have to worry about being super careful about how I treat the battery as replacements are usually fairly cheap and 2) it opens up the possibility of larger 3rd party batteries. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

That's the trend, removal batteries are going bye bye. Whether it's removal or not, the important question is whether or not it is possible at all to get at the battery slot. Have to watch a few tear down videos.

The iPhone 4/4s didn't have a removable battery either per say... yet you could easily do it yourself.

doesnt bother me.. i think the phone pricing already gave us justice

this is a make or break issue for me aswell. Will the wireless charging orb hold a charge so I can put it in my bag when im travelling and connect it with n4 without the need for any sockets?
if not are there any third party softwares that can allow something small which can recharge battery without any connections?

No, the inductive charger must be plugged into the wall. The only benefit of an inductive charger is not having to make any physical connection to the phone every time you charge.

I loved the convenience of inductive charging when I was trying out WebOS! Can't wait to have that thing on a Nexus :victory:

Saves on USB wear and tear... I'm down! I think that the USB port is probably the weakest link in all cellphones.

We will have to see what real life battery life is like.
2100mha battery does not last a full day now. I tend to swap if I'm using my phone during work and need to use it at night.
Nothing mentioned in all the fancy features about awesome battery life....

Although not being able to remove the battery is annoying, I say introducing inductive charging to the Nexus line makes up for some of it.

too bad you still have to plug it in to transfer info to a computer. For that, I like the lightning port. Micro usb is annoying and so so fragile.

too bad you still have to plug it in to transfer info to a computer. For that, I like the lightning port. Micro usb is annoying and so so fragile.

I know what you mean, but for some files depending on the size of them I have started to use bluetooth file transferring.

This is a huge concern for me as well. Spare batteries are cheap and you never have to worry about your phone dying.
However, the price is too good to pass up considering how it looks and the amazing specs it has.

Not to mention, on jellybean, my phones battery life has been phenomenal.

Best solution for batteries that die out during the day's usage? Buy a second Nexus 4! You know, since they're so cheap and all.

No battery removable battery and no sd card tells me hmmm maybe but its still designed by LG. Thats what i really hate. But at that price. I may buy it and use it as an ipod touch lol
