weird... trying again - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have been having this problem for a while and I can't figure out a solution.
When I plug in my kaiser to the computer, everything seems to work fine, however the active sync won't start and won't recognize the device. Also the device won't charge even though it shows the amber ligtht and the screen become brighter when I connect. I have the same problem with my car chargers.
If I use the HTC splitter (USB and Audio) everthing works the way it should be. But if I use a direct cable, bypassing the splitter nothing works. What is in that splitter that makes everything work? About 2 months ago, I didn't need a splitter to have it working. Is it a Rom issue?
Guys I do need help. It just drives me crazy.
Thanks.

Could be a slightly damaged mini usb connection. Have a look at the bottom of your kaiser and see if any pins are moved in the USB ext connector.

Yeah guy, I reported this issue with Kaisers & specifically Tilts 6 months ago. Have a look at your USB port pin on the device. If it is curved or the right side of the pin is slightly lower (Not arrow straight) then you may have sloppily placed your stylus on a soft reset. Sometimes this can be fixed by VERY GENTLY bending it back into shape with the stylus or another semi-rigid & smooth tool, that's if it not to badly jacked up. Because it charges in the home charger I'm about 90% sure that's your issue.

you guys are right. THe usb was slightly bent. Upon reading about the problem, I straighten it back however still the same problem. I am looking into getting a big magnifier to see if I see anything out of order.
In the meantime does anybody know a place in Toronto who is capable to fix this issue? I know a lot of people have problems but I don't want to send the device away.

Is it time to lay it to rest? no usb recognition and can't find signal..

I frankenstein'd my wizard back together with parts from another phone (apache). worked okay for a few days. now (after multiple dissassemblies) it wont get a signal, it just searches, and xp will no longer recognize the phone as a usb device. I have scoured the forum, looking for some insight... i think i hosed it by taking it apart too many times... it boots fine, screen looks great, sound plays way too fast.
any suggestions?
I'd take it apart again and look for loose connections, separated solder joints or cold solder joints. Are all cables firmly attached to the boards? If so, are all the contacts where the cables attach in sound condition (don't move ie.. wiggle). As far as the signal goes, is the antenna correctly mated to the contacts??
Did you do any soldering?

ExtUSB port seems broken...

The ExtUSB port on my tytn2 seems to be broken, or something.
When I plug it into my computer it is no longer recognised, and doesn't even start to charge anymore.
Similarly, if I plug in any sort of charger, then the device will not do anything.
In an effort to charge it, I did the following. I removed the battery, thereby switching the device totally off, put the battery back in and then attached a mains charger. At this point I got a solid red LED at the top where the signal/charge LED is. I left it like this for 2 hours and came back to it. I switched it back on and it had fully charged the device - yet I still could not get it recognised by anything.
So what's going on here - is it broken or is this a software issue.
Ignore the reflash bit. How am I supposed to do that if I can't get USB working? Stupid question sorry. Still, I've tried a hard reset and still nothing, so I guess it's knackered huh
EDIT: Replacement is on it's way for tomorrow. Puts an end to that saga I suppose!
HTC's miniUSB port uses traces for contacts instead of pins, which I can't even begin to express how ridiculous that is. To make matters worse, the soft reset pinhole is located right next to it so one slight jab of the stylus, car keys in your pocket etc and you're screwed. You may have done it without even noticing.
Flashing roms is out of the question, but you can use PocketController to make it look as stock as possible through wifi. Another alternative is to take your device to a college/university micro-electronics lab where they will fix it for a small donation or free.

Best of luck, but it might not be the end of your saga. When it gets to servicing, if they notice something was jabbed in the miniSUB port, they could come at you with out of warranty fees.
I have insurance on my phone. It's covered for accidental damage anyway.
Yep. Figured that out the hard way. Accidently stuck my stylus into the USB rather than the reset hole.
If you're lucky, you may be able to "push" the traces on the bottom side of the connector back in place... only one side of my connector was bent. Then I gently connected and re-connected a mini-usb connector.

Where are you getting insurance ? I can't find anywhere.
Thanks,

With Orange! Orange Care. Has done me proud a few times in the past, like when I crushed my SPV M2000 on the day I got it! Or when someone dropped my SE K700i in a pint of beer.
New phone is here and instantly I have noticed a couple of things:
1) Different type of battery, as already reported by some people. It's the Dynapack that doesn't quite fit properly.
2) Screen seems brighter and more colourful - again, as reported by some people already
3) The screen tilt is much stiffer (which is good cos the old one was really loose)
4) MicroSD cover feels of better material.
5) Whole thing feels so much quicker - but that's probably just because I've not loaded anything into it yet.

Possible micro-USB failure problem!!

Just to bring this to light for people to watch for.
As you should already know, the micro-USB port on the 'Kaiser' generic WM device is NON-standard.
That is it only has a single tapered side to ensure the HTC audio headset fits inside it. The stock wall charger I was supplied with also has this non-standard shape so fits snug and works 100%.
Problem with this is that any 'Third-party' or what we would actually call STANDARD micro-USB connectors, can move around within this port with a large degree of movement (most chargers and USB cables we all use!) thus causing damage to the delicate pins/PCB connections within, specifically to the non-tapered side.
It is my opinion (and you can shoot me down on this if you desire) that many failures of chargers and computer recognition can be attributed to this.
Please believe me when I say I do not say this is a flame of the device, but I think many can use this design fault as a way of getting a FREE repair from their supplier (which is as it should be!! as they supply a non-standard mini-USB charger and a STANDARD mini-USB cable in the box)..
All those I have advised in threads before, please link those threads to this one...Thanks..
These are threads that possibly relate to the USB physical failure. Please do NOT treat them as final...we are just trying to corealate similar data.

In this thread many have the problem by inserting the stylus in the USB receptacle BUT some also say they never made this mistake.

Damn... I only went back ten pages to 24/12/07 and found these!!!
If you have any input on any port/comms failure over and above these threads please let me know... Thanks.
The pain is, we're all going to have to go through the hassle of reflashing the device back to its original state, then lose it for a week while its repaired and then get it set up just so again when it returns!
I have an original HTC TyTN II so I'm not going to be able to do an insurance 'hotswap' this time.
Many thanks farsquidge for pulling all these threads together!
Should this be posted in a more general section? I would think this doesn't only happen to Kaiser users.. and we're not getting much of a response in this section.
I am thinking I may have that problem. I have an old shop lamp with a magnifying glass and I am still having a problem looking at the pin details on the micro usb connector. Is there a drawing out there relating to what I should be seeing?
I just tried plugging my brother's WM 2003 phone onto my computer and it detected it right away.. Can it be possible that the USB port on my phone is damaged? it works great with everything else though..

Possibly not! The title of the thread is POSSIBLE Micro-USB failure..

I the reason for my RMA was that the device would only charge on wall charger. My USB was slightly lowere on the right side. I believe that someone hit it on the head when they said that the home charger has a better fit & hence, keeps the connection were the PC cable & the Auto Chargers fail.
Since we still have warranty on our Kaisers, will HTC fix it?
Did anyone fix this problem yet?
micro-usb contacts...
this thread really hit the spot.
After killing my self trying to find the answer to why i could charge my device and not synch, i ran across this. indeed it was the metal contacts on the micro usb.
Gently, using a very thin flat tool, i was able to "reposition" on the B contact displayed in the picture above.
Once i did this, I reconnected the usb cable and viola...it worked!
Thanks everyone!
I just had to return my brand new TyTN II to the store I bought it from because of this problem. It charged in the wall but would not sync or be detected with the pc.
I already returned it for a refund. I do want to get another one but do not want to keep havening this same problem.
I almost wonder if I should have kept my orginal TyTN II and tried to fix it?
Thinking of getting a Tilt now since they are so much cheaper.
I'm on the phone with ATT right now and these A$$holes are trying to tell me that they WILL NOT cover this under warranty. I'm holding for a supervisor right now.
My device will take a charge from the USB cable or my wall charger but it will not take a charge from my car charger. I even went to the ATT store and asked them to hook it up to the car charger and they were the ones to tell me to call the warranty department.
This is ridiculous. I am going to raise Hell if they tell me that I have to pay for a new phone.
They're telling me that it is physical damage and they WILL NOT cover this under warranty.
I am beyond furious right now. I cursed this b!tch out and told her to go f0ck herself.
I don't think that was good for my cause.
$79 to fix it yourself

Thank You Thank You Thank You
I have been trying to figure this out for months. I used a knife and moved the "B" pin up and it worked immediately. Did I say THANK YOU?
I went to the ATT Store where I purchased my Tilt and had the manager call the Warranty Department and tell them that there is no physical damage on the device.
They're sending me a new (refurb) one.
It's weird that I can use my USB cable and the wall charger that came with the device, but any other charger does not work.
thanks for helping me with this.
i think it's weird that any simple user, like my mum, would immediately check the connections and blow in the USB ports...whereas the advanced users forget to check the connections and straight away start reinstalling software.
Thanks again for this.
I'll be getting my replacement Tilt today. I hope I don't have any issues with it since it's a refurb.
If anyone tries to get a warranty replacement from ATT and they ask you if you can see anything wrong with it, SAY NO!!! It's almost like they try to trick you to say something is wrong with it so they can say it's physical damage.
I hope I remember to re-flash Hard SPL or I might be wondering why my rom flashing doesn't work.
see i totally screwed myself...i experienced these problems and continued to bend my usb connector all around and eventually broke that plastic piece out (first type with the holes)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359695
and then from that being out i smashed the syncing pin over and over and that broke out...tried to solder it..got it to stay and sync for a few days then stopped syncing again then re soldered it and got isopropyl alcohol on my water damage pad so now im trying to figure out what to do...then last night i smashed the +5v and broke that pin...so i cant revert the spl so my only options are pay the 79 bucks to have ppctechs fix it or slip that plastic piece back in (its stays in even if a usb plug is inserted), get something to replace that pad (maybe construction paper...just to fool the eyes as im sure they wont give that a second look), sticking it in bootloadetr mode so it "looks broken" and try to work a att store rep into replacing it on the spot due to the boot up screen and steer away from the usb port problem as i screwed myself on that lol...any advice?

Dropped phone, memory access?

Hello everyone, I've searched all over for an answer to this one with no joy.
I've had my stock Orange locked Diamond for almost two years now, and towards the end of a family break I dropped it.
Now it won't switch on beyond an initial buzz, and none of the mini USB chargers or pc cables will persuade it to charge.
The problem is that I used it to take all the photos during the family break, and now can't access them.
Now I read the reply about "jump" charging the battery and will be giving that a go, but can the memory chip be accessed independantly to offload the contents?
I should add that for quite a while before, the phone picked up and dropped the usb connection when connected with a frequency of about 3 - 5 seconds, which was very annoying.
Many thanks in advance
Luke
Little update
Hello all, thank you for reading about my plight.
Well I managed to charge the battery, and I think the phone switches on, as the volume controls make the appropriate sounds. However the screen is black, and even under heavy sun I can't see anything, so it's not just the backlighting that's gone.
The pc doesn't notice it when I connect, so I can't get in that way, unless someone can point me to how to chop up a cable and hardwire a data connection "upstream" of the mini-USB socket? (I'm hoping it's just the connector which is dead)
Otherwise, is there a combination of hardware buttons that will switch on bluetooth? I dropped it when it was in airplane mode. I had BT explorer checked, so if I can get BT on, I should be able to browse the phone with the pc? Please confirm.
Looking forward to reading your suggestions
Cheers
Luke
ps now I've discovered the limitations of a fixed memory; if the card were removable, all this wouldn't be an issue.
Your solution

Thanks, I'll give it a try
Hi, thanks for the tip, I guess I have nothing to lose.
I've just found an appropriate screwdriver so here goes.
I saw that thread, but as one of the symptoms involved actually being able to read something on the screen, I didn't pay that much attention.
News soon.
Cheers
Luke
ok let me know.. best of luck
OMG it worked!
Hi, fantastic tutorial.
It took me several attempts to realise that when you say "chip" you mean circuit board.
Pressing and pressing gave no joy, but further investigation showed that I could slip the screwdriver underneath the loose connector and engage it from there.
Yes bad design on HTC's part, there should be some sort of physical lock, or at least a block underneath that pushes the connector into its socket.
However nice the phone was, the WM6 bugs & glitches were annoying, the USB connection still doing that really annoying thing of connecting and disconnecting every few seconds, so it's going to be hard to retrieve the photos; GRRR!
Does anyone know of a program that can block send files from the phone, either over wifi or bluetooth??
Anyway, many many thanks Siddharthsai, at least it's up and running. I doubt I'll be using it much now, despite that superb screen, my insurance replaced it with a Desire, and I have to say I'm impressed with my new toy
Oh yes, where's the command for auto screen lock? It's annoying me.
Many thanks again
Luke
Getting there
OK so thanks to Diamond tweak I was able to stop the screen locking every 5 seconds.
The USB problem is mechanical; I forced the phone down onto its mini USB plug really hard and it stayed connected. Thanks to SuperCopier 2 I was able to dump the contents before my hand got cramp
Yippee.
So I've got TomTom on the diamond, but no on-board nav on the Desire. My diamond might just end up relegated to being the permanent in car nav unit.
Anyone got a fix for the dodgy USB problem? I've tried all 3 of my mini-usb cables, but they do all happen to be HTC oem.
I guess that's why the micro USB has been adopted.
Thanks
Luke

For those with USB problems, do you have any other issues?

I gotta start work in a few so I'll expand on this later, but long story short, I'm having the same issue that various users are having with the USB port, where it refuses to charge the phone every now and then as well as connect to the computer.
I'll hopefully send it in should I somehow magically have warranty, but that's not exactly what this topic is here for.
For those of you with this similar issue, have you experienced other issues along with it? Jumping in and out of car mode was one I read up on.
I myself have been experiencing a media scanner service wake lock, as well as another that I can't find the culprit for.
I'll also add that I've tried restoring various nandroid backups, reflashing roms, and nothing is helping. I've been getting the same issue regardless the rom which leads me to believe its caused by the hardware issue.
Any input? This is driving me up the wall.
Rockin' a glorious Galaxy Note.
Yep.. Had the same issue....had to take mine to a service center where yhey replaced the usb also they did a special firmware update which supposadly causes the usb to fail.
Had it back now for 2 months and everything is sweet..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Its not a rom issue or kernal its strictly hardware issue. My usb port went bad just the way you have described it and I had apps opening and closing all by itself and beeping charging sound etc. I took a plastic fine (tiny) screw driver and pushed the usb pins inside the usb port with some force. I made sure I applied enough force to not damage the port pins but enough to push the pins (strip) straight inside the port. all my problems went away and my phone has been working wife ever since (2 month+).
make sure the plastic cover you use to protect your phone has enough space in the hole which allows the usb cable to connect freely. Mine was small so I had to cut it open. It made my usb cable contact to bent in a way when I used to push it in the phone to charge. I used a new cable and now I have no problems.
