Bad GPS fix and QuickGPS - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

A lot of people here have problems with their windows 6.1 and GPS. It seems some people have more problems than others, but someone on this forum has found a registry setting which solves my problem. At least until I soft reset my device, this causes the registry setting to go back to standard.
I’m talking about this post:

This solution helped for me:
The problem was in the registry of QuickGPS.
I changed the region settings of my PPC to Dutch, but QuickGPS doesn’t get this settings. So I assume it’s downloading the wrong GPS information.
After I changed the following registry setting I had a fix almost immediately :
[HKLM] - Software\HTC\QuickGPS\region changed from -- to NL
After using GPS Test I got a fix very fast.
Using:
Kaiser
OS DCS 1.4 WM6.1
R 1.64.06.04

Believe it or not but this works for me as I live in Holland but I think this could work for everyone who has problems regarding 6.1 and GPS no matter what radio you use. All we have to find out what the region codes are.
But this is a temporary fix, as I said soft-reset causes the setting to jump back to ‘--’ again and GPS is very slow whit the fix. Is it possible to create some sort of cab file or setting to set the region setting in the registry to user settings at reboot or wake-up? Or is altering QuickGPS also possible? If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

After thinking about this on my way to work, I came across the fact that since I use KaiserTweak it will set the default QuickGPS settings back, which of course has its region set to "--". So i'm assuming that's why when you reset your phone thats why it resets your settings again

Then I will look into the kaisertweak’s XML file and try to remove the QuickGPS settings and see if it works. Will keep you guys updated.
edit: Okay, this does not make any difference. So we have to find a way to set the user setting on every wake-up or boot. Does anyone know how to do this?

QuickGPS runs as a service (a very annoying one if you don't disable the audio & popup and vibrate notification immediately ).
Have you killed QuickGPS via task manager before editing the registry and then soft resetting? (I use dotfred's, best task manager + utils proggie out!)
If the application is re-writing the registry constantly with the settings it started with, then that may be the reason why editing the settings doesn't work and why it also doesn't stick.
Give that a try...
Hope this helps!

Hi _Alex_,
Thanks for your input.
I did try that, but unfortunately it still does not keep the same settings.
What I did was soft reset, change registry, soft reset - Then I had noticed that it kept the settings, but then I did a complete shut down and power up and then again, registry settings were back to '--"

I'm using the standard ATT ROM and the wierd thing for me is that I used the GSP (TomTom) on Tuesday with no issues. I tried to use it today and am unable to connect at all to the GPS via TomTom, Google Maps, or QuickGPS.

But did you kill QuickGPS before editing the registry and proceeding to the soft reset? It runs as a hidden service, which is why I recommend using dotfred's task manager, because the standard HTC task manager might not show it running.

ahhh
No, still did not work. But thanks for trying, and yea that task manager shows a lot of programs that you can't see running

If you use Alexs kitchen, i think you can edit the Rgu file under region to reflex where you are and cook the package back into your rom and it would always reflex the region you choose?

I've not tested it, but would a MortScript in the startup folder not do the job?

I made a little MortScript and added it to startup:
Code:
While (1)
Sleep (60000)
If NOT regKeyEqualsString ("HKLM", "Software\HTC\QuickGPS\", "region", "SE")
RegWriteString ("HKLM", "Software\HTC\QuickGPS\", "region", "SE")
EndIf
EndWhile
This works and keeps the "SE"-setting (for Sweden), but having the script running constantly isn't exactly optimal as it uses processing power and thus adding to battery-drain. Anyone have any ideas on a different way of making the script, which is more effective/power-saving? Or is there an even better way to make the registry key stick?

Hi all, after reading numerous articles about how to fix my issue with GPS, I've managed to find a fix using the UK radio rom compatible with Dutty's 6.1 rom. What I found out was the my first lock always never locked or took forever. So, what I did was go to the registry and left the key:
"HKLM", "Software\HTC\QuickGPS\", "region" to "--"
Then for the first time, after a hard-boot, (power off/on), I had to do this once:
1. Start up GPSTool
2. Change the setting to "Warm Start" and click "open".
3. Leave the app running and open up my TOMTOM application.
4. Give it about a minute or two and then it would lock, no problems.
5. I then, exited out of TOMTOM and closed the GPSTool.
So, for the next time I need to start a GPS, enabled tool, I would just start it up and no problems, it locks right away, until the next hard-boot. Then I would do this again. Kinda stinks, but this was the ONLY working solution for now because I don't feel like flashing my phone again. I have many apps installed and it takes forever to reinstall everything. Hope this was helpful for some people. Enjoy!

Well, looks like GPSGate fixed another phone... hehe, very happy now!! Thanks all for mentioning the program!

I don't understand the link between:
- the registry key "HKLM", "Software\HTC\QuickGPS\", "region"
- and what you said about GPSTool
In the end how do you solve the problem with the region ?
Chris

The GPSTool is built into the Dutty's 6.1 ROM. Don't get that confused with the GPSGate application. They are two seperate apps.
In order for this to work, I set had to set my the registry entry "region" from "US" to "--". The full path location is listed above. I think when I ran the QuickGPS utility, it set my region to "US" in the registry. You will have to regedit it back to "--" then try what I did, or it may not work. It didn't for me until I changed it back to default, which is "--". I remember reading somewhere here that a "warm boot" was clearing the RAM within the GPS hardware, so I played around with the idea of it running, while starting up a GPS enabled application and got it to work.
But I eventually decided to use the GPSGate application which solved my problem, without having to run the GPSTool method. Note that I got a quicker lock, after regediting the region area back to "--" and running the GPSGate application. Usually the first lock would never happen or take well over 10 min. Now, the first lock is with 1-2 min. which is fine for me and every subsequent time I need to use a GPS enabled application, it would lock right-away, within seconds, until the next hard-boot (power off/on). Hope that clears things up a little.

Hmm good solution now its takes less than a min to start tomtom. thanks.

Is this problem in all wm6.1 roms....Im certain that this is the issue with mine as once i downloaded data my fix was much more rapid then without (1.5-2.5mins, no tall buildings around clear line of sight). Any wm6.1 not have this issue??

What exactly is it that GPSGate does to solve the problem? Any specific settings you need to apply in GPSGate?

I'm after the phone pad so I can still use the 8125/Wiz screen as a normal phone keypad at times and not have to whip out the stylus.
whatever you do, dont use registry wizard to set it... I white screened a week ago doing that, hard reset
hope to find a solution
Perhaps this:
HKCU\ControlPanel\SIP
DefaultIM {42429667-.... or one of the others {42429690- {42429691-
Look in the neighborhoud HKCR\CLSID\{424296...... for the others.
Cheers
edit: In case it wasn't clear you need to fill in the whole CLSID in the DefaultIM string value. So {42429667- including the } at the end.
It should work after a soft reset (gone with a hard reset)
Any Solutions to this yet?
Thanks
Jules

yes but i make a hard reset after the first try (manually change registry with tcmd) and i try in another way...white screen in every try
lost in translation...
I was saying that if you TRY to use registry wizard to set it, you will get a white screen, and be left having to HARD RESET....
Not the best solution, but perhaps you could use my program SwitchSip to change the SIP on every soft reset. I don't know if it'll stick though, I've never tried...

I think we've all tried the method. Read the posts above carefully.
Just as a problem recap: the default SIP reghack no longer works on AKU2 ROMS. The kbd default occurs after a soft reset no matter what you have changed the registry value to.
I'm working on this one too. I coded up a program that quickly set the SIP to block recognizer and exited figuring I could just add it to the startup programs folder to switch over after a soft reset.
However, while this program works just great normally, it doesn't change the SIP when run at startup. I am working on why this is, currently. So far I've determined that my program is able to find the block recognizer SIP so the SIP dll is loaded. Tomorrow I may get a few more minutes to work on it. I'll code my program to check to see if it correctly set the SIP to block recognizer and re-attempt to change until it's successful. I'm guessing that this will have no effect on the issue since my current working theory is that the kbd default is set sometime after the startup programs run.
Guys, I don't know whether my app worked or not, but this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=317635#317635
seems to suggest it did. I don't have a wizard to test it on though
V
@vijay555:
I've got my little app set up on my today screen so I can just tap it quickly after everything's loaded to change my sip but it won't work if I drop it into my startup folder.
Perhaps this is what the poster you refer to is doing? Does your program check the default SIP using SipGetCurrentIM after you switch to see if the operation worked? Or do you just check for an error code after calling SipSetCurrentIM. Me, I'm just checking for an error currently and am not getting one.
Sleuth255: I really can't remember how I did it, I wrote it in c++ before I could program in c++, somehow. I'm on a promise to rewrite it sometime, and turn it into VJSipSwitch, for now it's merely a bastard child.
However, despite this, it's also designed to be configured as a shortcut to be launched from a hardware key or shortcut... if it becomes an issue, I'll look over the code again.

AT&T Tilt Automatically changing to wrong time zone

I am not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but I have had the Tilt for a week now, and I noticed that the Time Zone was changing from PST to London time. I have my device set to automatically change to the correct time zone (under the phone settings)... If I disable it, there is no problem, but I travel a lot so I would like it to change automatically.
I am using the Standard ROM from AT&T. I think it could be a ROM issues since this problem would pop up every so often on different cooked ROMS on the Hermes. BUT I wanted to see if anyone else was seeing the problem.
Thank you,
I have the Tilt and switched to the HTC factory ROM. I have been experiencing this problem as well. It hasn't happened in a few days, but it is really frustrating when it is. My Outlook calander gets totally messed up along with the current time. When I go into Time Settings it is set as London. I'm not sure what was causing my problems or how I apparantly fixed it, but it looks like it went away.
Anyway, you're not the only one!
Ditto, I have a stock ATT Tilt and have disabled the automatic install of the bloatware. I'm in California and the phone reverts to Mountain time at least once a day. The optional cabs i have installed are duttythroy (DY) touch skin, DY task manager, DY HTC sim manaer, DY black 3g comm manager, DY HTC voice recorder, Equinoxe retouched dialer, and PCM contacts & keyboard. Any help or direction is much appreciated
yes, this has been happening to a lot of people...this also causes activesync to run in the background all the time and I always find myself turning activesync off in the task manager a few times a day...the one thing I which was posted in another post was I deleted a notification called repllog.exe "app run when time changes"...now i'm not sure if this fixed the time zone issue but it did stop activesync from running all the time...
Thanks strikeIII, I looked for repllog.exe using the search function and sifting through the windows directory, I can't find it. Would you happen to remember the path?
That would be a good find considering it should improve the battery life quite a bit.
Ok guys, what you need to od is:
Go to Start->Settings->Personal->Phone
Find "Time Zones" tab and untick "Automatic change time zone and clock".
That sorted same problem here in UK.
Also in California and was having the problem on my TNT 2.0 flashed 8525 and now my new stock 8925 does the same. was also causing havoc on my calendar and schedule. I went ahead and disabled the auto update for now and all is fine.

You'll not find the particular repllog entry (re "start on time change") that way. It's in the "notifications queue" so you'll need say SKtools or Memmaid (or Scarybear check notifications if you can find it). In one of these go to the notifications queue.
BE VERY CAUTIOUS.
Do not delete other Repllog entries because you can kill Active Sync altogether. I strongly advise a full backup before deleting Repllog entries. They can be re-entered using SKtools or Memmaid but it's straightforward.
Mike
Thank You, I used the "uncheck auto update" function. Has worked well since 11.35 pm 10-16-07. Chris

yeah, sorry but I used MemMaid to take care of the repllog.exe file. this may not cure the time zone change situation but it does take care of activesync running in the background. At least if you travel a lot the time will still change automatically.
I do travel alot, I'll give it a try thanks again StrikeIII, Chris
I'm having the same issue. I'm in Idaho and my phone keeps switching to Central time. I've likewise had to disable the automatic time zone changing in the phone settings to get it to stop.
I have had this problem on my Titan/Mogul since day 1. I think it has something to do with Windows/TimeWizard.exe not sending the correct queries to NIST:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\LockStream\Time\Servers
Server1: http://time-a.nist.gov:13
Server2: http://time-b.nist.gov:13
Server3: http://time.nist.gov:13
Server4: http://time-nw.nist.gov:13
Disabling time synchronization solved it for me as well.

Thanks for your response,
HTC 8925 (Tilt)
Dutty's Touch AT&t beta 2
Cyberon Voice Speed Dial V1.2 build 070626
The newest version of S2U2 v0.95 offers a solution to this problem by adding the ability to use exceptions to temporarily disable S2U2.
1) Install the new version.
2) Run iLock2 to close the application.
3) Use a registry editor:
Under \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\A_C\S2U2, find an open ExceptionEXE(0-9) (STRING). I used ExceptionEXE3. Enter the value: "SDDialer.exe" (this is the application that runs when you press the button on your bluetooth headset).
4) Run iLock2 to restart the application and you're done.
Thanks to tompol for discovering this solution. I first tried it by entering the value: "Voice Speed Dial.lnk", but this didn't work.

did you turn on the directdraw option or safe mode option?
When you uninstall an app, it leaves behind the registry entries. As soon as you reinstall the app, those settings are in affecct again. Uninstall the app, use a registry editor to remove the following key, soft reset, then try to reinstall:
The key to remove is HKCU\Software\A_C
Ok, I had the exact same problem, the problem is indeed with D3D option, you need to disable it. As soon as it is off and the settings are saved, the program works fine once again, and smoother then previous version.
This part is gonna be hard to explain... but here it goes...
First thing to do is run ilock so that when u turn the screen off it doesn't start S2U2.
When you open the settings the screen freezes, like the kaiser crashed, but if you move down and you turn the screen off and on, you'll see the menu scrolled down.
Basically that means u're working blind, changes do occur but u can't see, so the process is to move it down, turning the screen off and on sistematically until u see the d3d option and turn it off, then save it.
Hope I explained myself enough.
Takes some work, but doesn't require registry tweaking and other settings are kept.
Keep posted on results.
Cheers, Esko

I have this problem. When I start S2U2 and miss call screen remains as it is when someone call (caller's number and slide to answer or two buttons with green and red phone). Whatever I push or click nothing happens. So I must softreset or turn off and on my Kaiser. Some tips?
Sorry I dont have that issue. However my problem with this version of S2U2 is when SLide to Answer is Active you can still use the Hardware Keys to answer!
Anyone no how to deactivate the Hardware keys during Slide to Answer?

if any of the apps in the exception list are running, not just in the foreground, even if they are running in the background, then [email protected] will not enable. Check your exception list, make sure none of those apps are currently running, then try again. If you still have issues after that, then it's with S2U2, not the exception list.

Apparently Internet Explorer was still running, and as soon as I closed that it ticked off. May consider removing that key, as I don't see why I would need it.

Good deal, glad it worked for you....
when I install S2U2 (i go thru phases where I want it, then phases of "get it off my Tilt") the first thing I do is remove the exception for PIE.
FYI.... Likewise, if you run any of the Cube or TouchFlo variants out there, you will need to put an exception into the TouchFlo settings for S2U2. What happens if you don't is when you try to slide to unlock (or slide to answer) you end up invoking the Cube or TouchFlo, instead of S2U2. Just an FYI for you....
Thanks for the tip. Am still looking into wicked programs so far, only had it two weeks and it's already been through the mod ringer.

that's the way to do it. I've been using PPC devices for years and years and everytime I get a new one, I try every hack, reg edit, tweak, and app possible.

Suddenly can't change input methode anymore

I can't choose my input method anymore. I selected the normal keyboard, and when I click te small arrow to select another method the keyboard just dissapears.
The only way to change it now is to use the program SipChange I found on this board but I would like to know how I can enable the "quick" switching again.
I looked into HKCU\ControlPanel\Sip\AllowChange and the value is "1"
I really don't want to hard-reset because I just spend a whole afternoon configuring my Diamond and installing apps
Good news is that it is definitely a registry issue. I had the same (arrow should activate HTC custom thumb sized menu of SIPs, but does nothing) and a simple registry restore (spb Backup) fixed it. So, no idea what registry key the issue was (also checked AllowChange first) but it's there somewhere...
Not sure what caused it tho; installed TouchPal several tiems, but when I reinstalled after fix it was all good so can't blame TouchPal just yet...
Yeah I don't have a registry backup
For now I'm using sip changer but it's not very easy so I hope I can get it fixed without hard-reset
Anyone? It's starting to get very annoying working like this
This just happend to me too One minute it worked, then it dident.
Anyone have a fix yet?

Anyone? Just happened to me too!
Don't believe I've changed much on my phone since it was last working correctly.

Dismiss Alarm Box Unchecks itself

every 2 or 3 days when my alarm sounds i get no onscreen noticfication to dismiss the alarm, only the symbol in the status bar.
When i look into sounds notification/reminders i see the "display message on screen" box is unchecked again so i recheck it.
What causes this to uncheck itself?
are you experiancing this behaviour or have any insight into the cause?
thanks
I have the exact same prob. It started when I used Diamond TF3D Config prog to change the diamond theme.
Dont know why it happens bro.
Anyone knows how to disable Missed Alarm Alert (symbol on the status bar) so I don't need to go to status bar console and remove it every morning ?

I believe i was having this problem before i had installed Diamond TF3D.
The search continues.
Im having the problem on TLR3 ROM and i know people who are also haveing this trouble on 1.37 original ROM and the 1.93 Original.
I'm using TF3D Config and also 1.93 ROM but I don't seem to have this issue?
Although I have never used it to apply a 'theme' only, to change date/time format and apply one of the performance tweaks.
Have you guys updated your TF3D config via apptodate and also tried restoring defaults (within TF3D config) and then tried applying your settings again?
i too only use TF3D config to format the date, i have updated it using apptodate.
I may uninstall it and see what effect that has, im not really sure that TF3D is the cause of the problem.

Yes, I'm on the original 1.37 ROM and am seeing this - bl00dy annoying too as it seems such an odd 'bug'....
Mathew
Had this happen again today, really annoys the wife as i spend time trying get the phone to shut up.
I have made no progress determining the cause, but it does only seem to uncheck the box after a soft reset, but strangley not after every soft reset..... the plot thickens
This problem only happens after i reset the device, but not every time.
As i cant find the cause i was thinking of a way to fix the problem.
i found the reg entry for the reminders show "on screen"
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Notifications\{15F11F90-8A5F-454c-89FC-BA9B7AAB0CAD}
and i have the values for the box checked and unckecked.
I have been googleing for the past hour but having no luck with what i want to achieve.
I would like to write a batch file to open a reg file that will change the dismiss box registry entry to the checked value, but it seems batch files cannot be run from the windows start up folder.
Im not very technically skilled with programming so could someone more knolegable point me towards the correct way of doing what i desired, which is change a rehgistry value at start up.

I could write an executable that will restore the registry entires on start-up but I can't find the registry value that controls it.
Which value are you editing?
Start / Settings / Sounds and Notifications
Page Notifications
Event - choose Reminders
Check on Display Message.

If that was in reply to me, I'm looking for registry entry!
This thread seems closest to the problem I have.
For me it is always that on alarm there is no popup where I can dismiss the or snooze the alarm
I always have to unlock the phone (by entering password), tap the status bar, then choose the alarm button and then the pop up appears as it should have done by itself.
This is always, no matter if I reset or not. And, I have checked on "display message" when I look into the settings.
This is freaking weird and annoying.
I've noticed the box unchecks after the sync process via Activesync.
I'm pretty sure it's caused by particular side software we have installed on our Diamons. I propose to post the side software list we have and then point out the pattern.
My list:
MS Voice Command
Finix Battery Icon
Splash ID
Sprite Backup
Diamond Tweak
Resco Explorer
Yandex Maps
Skype
CorePlayer
G-Alarm
Manila Calculator Skin
Yota TV
Nice idea but already flawed given you've not published an exhaustive list. A case in point being Activesync - that's a resident piece of software and furthermore one which you suspect as possibly being responsible!
Or are you certain it is a non-Windows issue? That's quite a leap of faith given we've all previously been scratching our heads...
I don't mean to come across negative, but I also don't want to see a futile attempt at finding a solution!
Mathew
No I am not pretty sure it's not Windows issue. However, if it is, why there are so few of us suffering?
I suspect G-Alarm, got to try to play around with it being uninstalled.
I'm having the same annoying problem since running the 2.03 official ROM. On the 1.93 I never had this problem. I didn't install G-alarm or TF3DConfig.

That's a very good point, although it could quite simply be down to a combination of i) a limited number of people using the alarm, ii) affected users not being bothered by the issue, and/or iii) affected people not realising they are being affected!

For what it's worth I've never used G-Alarm...
