I'm going to exchange my Tilt under warranty. Anything I should be worried about? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've installed a few ROMs from this place onto it. I did not SuperCID (just used a HardSPL bypass) it nor SIM Unlock it.
Does this mean that I should be able to undo everything that has been done?
How do I remove HardSPL? Is that possible?
How can I install an original AT&T ROM on it? Where do I find those? I think I found one with Alex's Kitchen, but I'm not sure if that's a full version or what. And what about the AT&T bloat?
Sorry if this is a noob question. I glanced through the Tilt-specific Wiki and the Kaiser Wiki and I didn't see the answer to any of these questions in the FAQs.

see the wiki, there's a howto link for reverting your spl

Oh, awesome. I missed that. I think it was because I was mainly looking through the Tilt-specific Wiki. My mistake.
Here's the thread in case someone else happens accross this one in search of the same advice.
http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/335568/

Just install the original AT&T Rom and you should be fine. I had to send mine in for a warranty exchange last Friday after the radio conked out on it, and got my new one on Monday of this week. Anway, I used the HardSPL too, and I just reflashed the AT&T Rom onto it, put it in the box, slapped the return label on it and sent it on it's merry way
Edit-Somebody on here said they don't check the SPL when they get the defective unit, just that it has the AT&T Rom on it. In fact, I bet they just chuck it in the recyling bin and write it off.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they half inspect the phones. They must get more exchanges than they could deal with. They possibly check the device thoroughly though because it's a high end (dollar) device. Who knows?

I worked in the service department at Best Buy for a while, and I know we didn't check anything when customers returned products. All we did was looked at the stickers on the outside of the products to make sure the serial number, model number, etcetera all matched up, and that was it. As long as those matched up, we could send the devices back to their manufacturers or out to our service centers.
I figured AT&T would operate the same way, but from what I've read on these forums, they do a pretty thorough check. I just wanted to make sure I covered all grounds. Better safe than sorry, y'know?

Yeah, that's true. The guy at the store looked my phone over, and even changed SIM's and agreed something was wrong with the phone's radio, so that's in the notes too.

I found the post I was talking about, it's the first on on the page-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568&page=23
"Just FYI; I recently returned my 8525 to ATT because it was not charging with the car charger.
I flashed back to the latest ATT ROM and then did a second hard reset. I heard last week from ATT the phone was accepted as a core with no problem.
I was told by a friend at ATT that they don't look at CID, but different splash screens will for sure trip up a return.
Just my experience; hope it helps someone."

Warranty issue?
The touchscreen of my phone is not working. Good thing is that i bought it just 8 months before so i guess its still under warranty? (is it?)
After looking around in the forum i get it reverted back to original locked state and now i want to get my warranty from ATT people. Can you please let me know how to proceed? And if anyone has already done this then what steps he followed? Do we need to send our phone back first and then get the newer phone? Or do they give us the newer phone and then we need to send them the older one back?

Just call AT$T, they will check your account to see if you are within warranty. If your problem is within warranty guidelines, they will send you a new (refurb) tilt or if you press, a new (refurb) Fuze ( I would rather have the Tilt ) It usually arrives within five days. It comes with a pre paid return envelope. Take the battery and sim and back cover off the old phone, put them in the new phone. Drop the old one in the envelope. Drop it in the post and you are all set.
If you fail to send the old one back within the time allotted they will bill your account of the full value of the replacement phone. Quick and easy, my replacement phone is over a year old and has worked flawlessly.

My Tilt is maybe 8 months old and decided to stop charging the other night. Unfortunately, I installed a Manila 2D ROM on it some time ago and because it will not recognize the USB cable, I can't roll it back. I'm going to call AT&T today and see about having a replacement shipped to me. I don't think it'll be a problem since it won't turn on and it'll probably be a mail replacement like you described. I'm going to press to get a Fuze, when I ordered the Tilt I paid good money to get it new instead of refurbished and it still stopped working after well under a year of use. If I'm getting a refurbished replacement I'd like the newest model.

Unless of course it is a battery issue, and they put in a new battery, see that you have used unapproved software and mark your S/N as immediately out of warranty,.....................I'm just sayin................................

You think that's an issue even exchanging it through the mail?

Do you think they stay in business by by just mailing a new phone to anyone who says, " this is broken, give me anew fuze ?'

I just exchanged my tilt today. My screen broke (the colors became all white and inversed and weird) so I called ATT and they told me to go to this special service warranty store. They looked it over quickly and gave me a new tilt no problem... just make sure you flash the original ATT rom back on it. (They didnt notice I broke the VOID sticker in the screwhole hehe)
PS. I got my tilt last April, and I'm not sure how long the warranty lasts. The guy said I have 90 extra days on this new phone.

Just out of curiosity, why would you rather have the tilt? I've been thinking of upgrading from the tilt to the fuze...

Basically , you can have a brand new Fuze the way AT$T and M$ want it, or you can have a Tilt the way you want it. At present there are three times as many custom roms, more ways to customize it and I absolutely will not give up my Tilt screen. After a year of customizing my Tilt to perfection on this site, there is absolutely nothing about the Fuze that interests me.

I'm thinking about sending my Tilt back. It's bricked for some reason. I bought a new (OEM) battery because I thought I had battery problems, still nothing. If AT&T gets a phone that won't even power up what happens, I have hard spl and a flashed rom?

If they manage to resusitate it or even read the flash memory contents (if it's possible to hotwire a car, who knows what can be done with a TyTN II and both of these would be possible), then when they see it's not running an approved ROM/SPL they may act like a bull and charge!
Anyone who runs a custom ROM on a phone thats still under warranty runs that risk should a problem occur that makes it difficult to flash back to original spec.
denco7 I agree entirely with your comments re the importance of a tilting screen but now HTC have developed the Touch Pro 2 (which has a tilting screen) there may soon be a real successor for the Kaiser released to the market. I don't know which providers will pick it up or where it'll be sold though.

Does the same thing apply if it's not under warranty but has insurance from at&t on it?

Tilt USB port damaged..

Frat.. My fully upgraded Tilt (Dutty Rom 6) got its USB port damaged while I accidentally poked the stylus in there instead of the reset hole.
...now it won't sync with my pc however does charge only when I plug in the dedicated wall charger into it. So, on visual inspection, I saw the 5 pins (thats how many they seem) with last two next to the reset hole "misaligned".
I've tried poking a needle and trying to straighten it back into place but didn't work and I gave up fearing further damage to the port.
basically, I called At&t and they are mailing me a replacement device but now I'm not sure if I would need to re-flash the original AT&T rom back before returning.... anyone have any experience in the returns field? The cust serv rep "read" me a disclaimer (felt like hearing my rights by a cop!) stating that if they find any liquid or other damage to the phone then I may be charged $497.00 for it as it would be considered as warranty voided.
So, no mention of any s/w changes in the disclaimer she read to me also resulting in the same. But I surely don't want to take a chance therefore am humbly asking for some input from someone who may have experience similar situation?!!
Reading the "Tilt re-flash due to not voiding warranty if having to return" sticky-thread's all 14 pages did not give me even a single post where anyone can confirm if at&t will indeed consider messing up with the s/w as voiding warranty.... unless ofcourse I'm blind..(has happened once in a while).
I've also searched on this and have not found any posts.. again, I'm mentioning this so that the mods and/or others won't burn me for not doing my homework.
Wouldnt it be easier to flash a stock rom from SD card than wait and see if they void your warranty?

Well.. I'm trying to avoid flashing the stock rom altogether. As I've noticed almost every 2nd post on the stock-rom-flashing-for-warranty sticky not having a smooth run while returning the phone to its original state.
besides.. what do you mean by "then wait and see if they void your warranty?"..
Thats exactly what I'm trying to avoid in the first place as once I mail the unit back I will have no control on the outcome unless ofcourse either someone confirms that not reverting back to the stock rom won't cause a $500 hole in my pocket or otherwise, in which case I'll have to re-flash it.
If you've flashed a different ROM then they will know and they will say you caused the damage and charge the full price for it.
they might charge you full price anyway because the usb port is damaged. it might just be easier to fix the port urself...

Thanks a million for the site. I had no idea that a service like that existed and that too specifically addressing my exact issue. I'm gonna keep it bookmarked for future.
Fortunately, I was able to stick a needle in one of the pins and push them up and then have it held there with a dab of super glue. So far, its working like a charm but if it ever fails again I'll go the above route.
This is awesome.. I was very concerned in having to receive the replacement unit as with experience of having used several pda phones over the years I've learned that the refurb units that the warranty replacement give you is got a good 50-50 chance of having some kind of hw or sw flaw.. so... I'm glad to have kept my phone.
Took mine right back to the ATT store for a damaged usb port, all they did was confirm it wouldn't read via the usb and exchanged it right there for a new one, i was told it was a 1 year replacement warranty on the phone, they didn't check a thing, give it a try, i have also exchanged one that was erased buy getting to close to a mag drill at work, although it was not a tilt they exchanged it without even batting an eye, thanks tjenus

Hi tjenus,
You mean you brought the faulty tilt, together with the original accessories it came with, to the store and they replaced your set for a brand new, retail version, of the tilt?
What else was required, the receipt or anything?
Thanks!

I call BS after being a AT-T customer for years I know for a fact they don't swap out phones even at corp... Stores they tell you to call in and have a warrenty replacment shipped to you. Thats just how it works UNLESS your withen the 14 day grace period then they would probably do it. The reason they do this according to AT-T is they don't have enough stock in each store to do swap outs. You best bet is to call AT-T and have them ship you a new one and flash abck to the origanl rom they don't check the SPL version what so ever they just look if it has water damage and any other visable signs of abuse.
I returned mine
I had this same thing happen. The USB failed to work after I dropped my phone. So seeing how I could not reflash it, I ran out all the power on it, until it had nothing....it would not even boot. With all the battery drained, I knew that even if they plugged it in, they would not see I had flashed the rom....though they could have used a new battery. I took it in, and told the local ATT reseller that the USB stopped working. It was within 30days of purchase. They took it back and exchanged it no questions asked. They didnt even test it. Now, i just wont drop my new one, lol.
Good luck.
Not entirely related, but for those who purchased an HTC TyTN II and try to have it repaired in the US, beware: it is not covered under warranty here. After just under 4-weeks I found the USB port was loose and would no longer take a charge. After more than 4-weeks in HTC America and after refusing to accept their assessment of "User Abuse" and the $300 mainboard repair cost, they finally shipped it back to me, mainboard replaced via Fedex Ground... according to several HTC America reps I spoke with - there have been numerous similar cases reported to them since the TyTN II debut two months ago. Perseverence may pay off -- although I should have known better, my next purchase won't be through a parallel importer.
Cheers
hah. did this too.. called at&t and had them warranty exchange it. i just bent it back around with the stylus enough that it would work so that could revert back so i could send it back. havent heard anything from them.. so im assuming there not gonna charge me

i own a tytn 2 in the usa and got the same from htc. my usb got messed up a little on its own than i stuck the stencil in there and it barely worked(had to wiggle it) anyways i found a repair center but they didnt have parts. ordered the parts from ppc techs and they sent me a different connector. its the same one in the sprint mogul which i think is a better build. so they replaced it and everything is perfect with the charging now but they did something with my hinge. its off a little. can anyone point me in the right direction to take my phone apart so i can fiddle with the hinge? any help is greatly appreciated
Hi,
I just got a Tilt from craigslist. The phone came with the At&T box, but unfortunately I forgot to get the receipt. Now the USB port is broken and I want to see if I can return for warranty.
The phone still has the AT&T ROM and infact I havent unlocked it. So will this be a problem if I just say I dont have the receipt but the rest and returned it with the box?
Please help!!!

ATT Warranty Exchange experiences

Just wondering if anyone can share there experiences with the exchange program through att..like what HAVE you gotten away with and what HAVENT you gotten away with and got slapped with the $500 charge lol
I followed the the warranty return thing on this forum, and I got no problem. I had seriously scratched the screen of the phone. I told the manager before sending it to quote she said its "normal wear and tear." But my speaker of the phone was messed up. On that same phone the void button and some ddamage as I was playing with it, I didn't what it was, until I found out later that its to open up the phone.
So, I got away with two major linear scratches on the screen which made writing with the stylus impossible. And I had damaged the button. But I told the manager of this before I sent it in. Or the High_end PDA department.

what did they find wrong with the phone???
i just sent one they sent me, the first time, i put it into the boot loader and noticed that the SPL was HardSPL, it scared me a little and well the screen cracked while i was looking at it an hour later, the phone rang so i looked and the caller ID and suddenly there was a broken screen on my tilt. not sure if they are gonna say anything about hard SPL but it came that way.
(part of me hopes i was holding someones old phone from this site)
oh yeah and this probably shoudn't be in ROM developement, ask a mod to move it to general
oh im just wondering..i was reading a post about putting the old att spl back on for an exchange and someone replied about how theyve returned 6 tilts with major problems all of which should fall outisde of warranty so i just thought id ask as i have a slight problem myself but its not keeping my kaiser from working and i opened a ticket with HTC directly as they dont screw you if you fall outside of warranty...my usb charger was getting a full contact and i had to bend it up and down to get it to stay charging (shoulda just sent it in then lol) and finally the plastic seperator of the pins broke out and then i bent in a pin a few times and that broke off..so i opened it up and soldered it back in and it eventially popped off again so i was thinking i could just squeeze the plastic piece that broke off back in as it wont come out unless you use needle nose pliers and sliding that pin back in..
I did a warranty return not to long ago. Phone was stuck with the radio from hell 1.65.17.10 and didn't have the friendly FrankKaiser that Jockyw2001 developed. Never had an issue with AT&T saying that I had altered the phone in any way. I flashed back to the original shipped ROM. Change the SPL to 1.56 the original one that it came with. I then re-flashed the original shipped ROM. When the ROM flash completed at 50% I unplugged the phone. This way on the phone will only go to the bootloader.
I actually just did a warranty return again today. Had some scratches on the screen that were really bugging me. There weren't big but definitely a nuisance for me. Told them the phone was stuck on the bootloader, or as I put it in "in this three color screen with Red, green, white." They issued a warranty replacement right away.

yeah cause we don't know about the magic we can do with the "pretty rainbow screen" come on ATW you let a few little scratches bug you. i'm still waiting for them to send me one that works, i've sent back three and i still have the original that i bought. two broken usb ports and a broken screen good job at&t for being incompetent

actually yes, well they say they will be sending it when the get the phones i just sent back. i talked to Christina and she told me that the phone they will send me next will be the tilt as it comes out of the box, including the software cd, usb cable, stylus, battery, and back cover. i will confirm when i recieve it but they tell me it will be brand new
Well, after I figured out my ROM issues. My phone had some problems with continuously soft resetting. I suspect a bad memory block. I made it clear through out my conversation with the rep that I took really good care of my phone and that I don't know how people can throw their 400 dollar phones around like they are nothing. I also made a point to say my battery seemed to be going bad and that I had done some research about Li-Po batteries going bad and that this seemed to be a classic case. I asked if there was anyway she could send a battery with the phone. (Just so you know, when you call warranty replacement, it seems to me they have two options, send a refurb, or send a full kit) So, she said she could send me a full kit and it is otw now. That is a good thing because my phone wont boot now. I think whether you get caught with a bootloader that is different than OEM kinda depends on who receives the phone on the other end. I'm sure they are SUPPOSED to check that, but I'm sure they can get away with not checking it, and I'm sure there is no incentive for checking it.

They could have said F.U., you broke it we are not resposible.
My phone got stuck in bootloader while doing a rom update.Called AT$T, they sent me through three techs, my answer to all there suggestions were " did it ", " did it ".
Three days later, they sent me a refurb ( in perfect condition ), in the box was the phone, a return mailing label/postage, even a new piece of tape to seal the box. Put the phone in,sealed the box, put on the label, dropped it in the mail box. End of story. The new/refurb has worked great ever since.
Could not have been easier or more pleasant.
So far it has been very positive even when my phone was technically out of warranty they replaced my TILT (not a cheap phone)
I have done 4 returns via mail and 1 by going to a local AT&T Warranty exchange center. NO PROBLEMS, I did revert back to original ROM but I am sure they didn't check. store replacement was in and out in 25 minutes. ( 10 minutes after my phone was looked at they just gave me a new one ).
AT&T You do have great warranty service I will give you that.
so all sounds good i should just stick my device in bootloader mode and send it back?
i can only revert back the rom as i cant sspl it so it shows hardspl AND security unlocked at the top..think thatl make a difference?
My miniUSB port was broke, wouldn't charge or sync most of the time. I called AT&T told them what was wrong and they said they'd send me a replacement. Once the replacement got here, I reverted my phone back to at&t ship specs, sent it back to them and all went well.
My girlfriend and I both had the Hermes, unlocked w/ cooked rom. They physically broke to a point it was hard to revert them back, but eventually was able to, we got 2 brand new Kaisers for $50 a piece. I'd love to know if I can 'loose' this phone and get a new kaiser for another $50 then sell the one i've been using for a couple of months for 2 or 3 hundred. If anyone has done this or knows how let me know!
I recently had to send in my Tilt and recieved a refub in the mail and everything went very smooth. Customer service was good and fast.
just returned 2 8525's and they sent me a tilt, first 8525 white screen problem, second one wont continue installing rom above 12%. awesome hardware warranty service.
wow they upgraded you to a tilt, thats amazing
warranty
as long as the phone isnt in more than one piece and the liquid indicator under the battery is white there should be no problem. Keep this in mind also. It all really depends on who receives it when you send it in. Everyone views physical damage, wear and tear, etc in their own terms even though there is a standard measure for it. Some let things go and others will say that a wear and tear scratch is damage. Generally you can get away with a bit as long as the phone doesnt look like a dog to it. No broken screens. No screens with pressure cracks (internal cracks). The screen is usually the biggie.
when i first got my kaiser i joined this site.. days later i BRICKED my phone, i had all types of apps and crap on my ppc. SO i went over to my original at&t shop and the dude called my bluff of "i dunno why, its not working". So i took my device and the next day went to another at&t shop with my brother. I walked in flirted my ass off with the ugliest sales rep i found.. and man this chick was beastly, and was able to swap out my device and get a new 512mb mem. card .. with no problem. i didnt even have a reciept, i just talked my way thru and SHAZAM!

Am I completely screwed?

So about 45 days ago I purchased a new Tilt off ebay. Big mistake but the people at Best Buy had me convinced that they stopped making them. Yesterday out of no where my keyboard went dead and my phone started acting up. Currently I can't leave my phone on without it starting the note program and recording sound clips until the memory is full.
At this point I was just wondering what my options are. Will AT&T exchange my phone for a refurbished one? Is there anyway I could sent the phone to HTC to get it repaired. Are there any reliable companies that I could send the phone to? I have heard stories about people just bringing the phone into a AT&T store and getting it swapped out. Am I out $400?
If you got it off ebay, att doesnt want anything to do with it. You can try for HTC support, but i have no idea how HTC is with that kind of stuff.
Do a hard reset, and see if that helps any.
I wonder if it's just a faulty keyboard and it's causing shortcuts to open the notes software.
What other things are happening?
Could be a cable loose inside or the keyboard circuit board could have slipped out of place. This happened on mine.
HTC wont touch an HTC device under warranty without a receipt (from original purchase) Branded devices they wont touch without them coming from the network.
Paid repairs are different, they'll carry out the repairs for you, and invoice you for the repairs. They also charge for a quotation for repairs if you dont get it repaired (£20 in the UK I think, no idea outside of the UK)
If the phone keeps recording notes, it could be something as simple as a button being stuck. my solution with old devices was to mash the buttons as much as possible, and it generally unstuck them.
If your device is 45 days old (to you) then to be fair, its not likely to be an issue that the seller knew about, as its something thats occured since then. Issues can occur at any stage in a devices life, its just unfortunate that yours has chosen now to go wrong.
If you're not looking to pay to get the device fixed, it may be something as simple as opening the case up, and cleaning around the keyboard/extra buttons and re-assembling it, but if you're unsure on how to do this, I'd recommend not trying. When I opened my old 9100 to try and clean it up, something went sproing, and I lost a spring... I could never use the bottom row on the keyboard after that.
I've had good experiences with HTC.

This isn't my experience.
I've had a couple of dealings with HTC UK and have been very happy:
1) Ebay-sourced Tornado failed screen - I phoned HTC and from the IMEI number they got the manufacturing date, worked out it was under a year old, and fixed it for free
2) ebay-sourced Artemis - I dropped it, bent the casing. I phoned HTC and they fixed it as a paid repair for 65UKP. This included a complete recase. When I noticed some of the buttons were a bit sticky afterwards, they did a second repair replacing the controls for free, despite it almost certainly being a problem caused by my initial dropping.
3) ebay-sourced Qtek 8500. Had a problem with the LCD failing when the clamshell was flexed. Again, phoned HTC UK and replaced under warranty.
They've been prompt, have native helpdesks, cheap and generally couldn't have been more helpful - definitely worth approaching them. This contrasts with, say, Nokia and is a major part of why I like HTC products.

The first thing u should do is figure out if it is hardware or software related. Just do a hardreset and see if that helps. If not, then its most likely hardware related.
Check in Settings - Buttons what button is assigned to the recorder (usually the one on the left side), remove that assignment.
The button must be stuck or the sensor below it faulty, so it senses that button always pressed.

Dont get me wrong, I wasnt slating HTC for their support, I'm with you on that one. I've just seen jobs that have been bounced back from them (rightfully so) and was just giving the worst case scenario, that being that HTC dont actually have to fix it.
the agent or att will not help you, you got it from eBay and even if they help it will be for extra $$ so you may well just override that idea
first thing we must be sure if its hardware failure or software failure
if its software then you need to read lots but eventually you will have to get a new ROM and start from scratch eliminate all 3rd party ( so i advice using stocked ROM)
look at this it might help http://rapidshare.com/files/103168855/HTC_Kaiser_Service_Manual_jas_pik.pdf

Square Trade
After this happened to me the first time I got some bunk electronics from ebay, I started using squaretrade.com. They will give you a warranty at about 50% of the cost of a Manufacturer/Dealer warranty and have a five day fix/replacement guarantee.
I would like to thank everyone for their reply I can see this is a dedicated community.

I wonder if it's just a faulty keyboard and it's causing shortcuts to open the notes software.
What other things are happening?
Could be a cable loose inside or the keyboard circuit board could have slipped out of place. This happened on mine.

Last night I reverted back to my factory rom but this did not fix the problem. Some odd things that I noticed that has me completely baffled is that only the directional keys (up, down, right, left) work on the keyboard but nothing else works. I tried doing a hard reset but that didn't wont since the 2 soft keys are not responding.

That manual seems very complete if I can't get HTC to fix it I will attempt to fix it myself. Does anyone know if I can purchase replacement part?
There's some hope for you. I bought my Tilt off of Ebay. AT&T warranted it from the day that it hit their network with my SIM card. So although it was originally purchased from AT&T (by the ebayer seller) on Oct 17th 2007, my warranty started December 6th 2007. No receipt required. They swapped it no problem. The TILT has a 365 day warranty via AT&T.
Just make sure you deal with a service center and not the individual stores. Go to attwireless.com and search for "TILT Warranty" .. look for the service center information.
Mine was swapped with no hassle in about 5minutes (I had a rom issue). One note if you go this route, check the replacement! My replacement has key-sticking issues (the right key on the keyboard gets stuck down, etc). The speaker (for phonecalls, not external) also is a little more muted than my old one (I sometimes have trouble hearing people). I may rewarranty it.
*edit*
Here: http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&solutionId=KB64687
The service centers are contractors (I could tell by their shirts, saying "Company Name: Authorized AT&T Tech"), so I really don't think they care, as long as they can warranty it they will because it is more money for them. Just my thought.
As the above poster said, AT&T WILL do warranty exchanges on tilts bought through ebay or otherwise. I bought one off of craigslist and had it exchanged when a key on the keyboard stopped working. No problem. It is warrantied for 1 year after it is first used on their system.
The people stating otherwise are flat out wrong.
Thanks for the advice guys I was able to take the phone to a AT&T service center and swap the phone for a new one.

No problem. Glad to hear.
It was a nice surprise for me last week, as I thought I was out $400 for a new one or stuck to using a temporary phone until the Touch Pro came.

Called in for a warranty exchange ATT Tilt

My phone connects when I get a call but no voice on either end. The only way to get out of this is to reset my phone. Had to do it so much that Ive called in for an exchange under warranty.
They told me it will be a refurb since that is the only thing they can do. I even tried the Kit box with the battery (which they are replacing since my battery is not holding charge) but they are sending it seperately.
My question is for the exchange, is the refurb any good and did it solve your problems?
Is there anyway I can get them to give me a new phone since mine is less than 6 months old.
I did an exchange because one of the keys on the keyboard was going out. The refurb they sent me had the same problem but worse, so I sent it back for another refurb and I'm happy with that one. Somebody once said that after 3 refurb exchanges they'll send you a new one, but I don't work for AT&T so I can't verify if that's correct.

Uh huh das right
I did a warranty exchange on my tilt because the miniUsb port cracked. The device they gave me was like new, i actually thought it was new, till about a week later i decided to call and check and they told me most likely its a refurb... honestly i can't tell if it is or if its new.
ALso about your issue, did you recently upgrade to a 6.1 rom and not change the radio? that would cause no sound..
double post :/

thanks for the info. I did upgrade to 6.1 via HTC website that I think also updated my radio. I currently have radio #1.65.21.18
Could this be my problem?
that is a wm 6.1 radio, but still, some radios don't work well with some roms, check AllTheWay's Ultimate Radio Thread for more info.
I love peoples reasoning for not deserving a refurb. I've worked at places like Dell and Acer and I just love when people argue. "it was new when I bought it"

As someone who has been on the receiving end of several Dell computers, you are correct that this argument doesn't hold water since Dell takes pride in the full reconditioning of it's refurbished units.
However, as someone who needed to exchange 4 Tilts within 2 weeks due to the total lack of quality control on [insert random 3rd party company here]'s part, I understand why some people are hesitant to accept a refurb phone.
When I finally had enough of dealing with the warranty group and called business customer care, the woman on the phone transferred me to someone back in Warranty who told me that AT&T doesn't even handle the refurb business, and the entire process (including QC and shipping) is done by a 3rd party company.
Yes you can be very unlucky with refurbs but the same applies with brand new phones too.

are u saying that there is a better radio for the stock 6.1 rom than what it comes with?
could this be my issue on the new sound?

That lady flat out lied to ya, I have personally been in the ATT department were they recondition MOST devices. And yes tilt's are done there as well, to a certain extent, they clean them and replace screens, keypads, basic stuff. I cant even begin to explain the morons working there, my 7yr old could do a better job and he would have fun doing it.

Htc biggest ripoff ever !!

Good day,
This is just a warning to all Touch pro 2 owners. I bought my unit August last year. Shipped it back to HTC because the touch screen had stopped responding. The phone booted up fine but you couldnt use the touch screen.
Im from the Caribbean so I had to pay for the shipping back to the states.
This is the email I got for HTC :
Dear Valued Customer,
This is documentation to provide suggested action repairs and quotation for
each service rendered.
Diagnosis:
System hanging, device has been hacked.
Suggested Repair:
Replace Main Board
Total Repair Price:
With shipping $359.64
---------------------------------------------
I paid $700 bucks for the phone off amazon.
I installed the bootloader and an Original windows mobile European Rom 6.5 months ago.
Here are my questions :
If the motherboard is bad or "hacked" why did the system work perfectly for 6 months.
Obviously HTC thinks I am an *** to shell out $360. Im going to tell them go to hell. This WAS my first ever HTC phone. I had respect for the company. But not the way they treat their customers. Im just going to tell them keep the phone because I dont want a paperwieght. This is alot of BS. Its obviously a hardware problem and they are trying to blame it on me.
So Im out $700 and no phone. ---- HTC they have lost a customer for life.
Im sure someone here will have a problem with their phone. But just be warned. HTC thinks we are all chumps. Im going to get a droid or something when I save up enough money.
I hope no one has to live through this nightmare like I had.
Thanks for nothing HTC. ---
* EDITED FOR LANGUAGE (NRGZ28) *
ok first of all, dont curse, its just gonna make you look childish,
where im at HTC doesnt really have bad customer service, you just gotta make sure you talked to the right guy from HTC, but since your touch screen doesnt work, its just an LCD problem something to do with the digitizer, not soo sure, but did you even try a hard reset or flashed a different ROM?
and what you installed a bootloader
you didnt jtag it have you?
but im sure u mean to say HardSPL, but was it the original HardSPL? that couldve triggered them to say its been hacked if it wasnt the stock SPL
I bet for that price you could pay someone to do the work locally.
Well you really can't blame HTC for your mistake..The mistake of not restoring for factory ROM and SPL prior to sending it back. There are instructions for doing that just for this situation when you need to make a warranty exchange..Flashing a custom SPL & ROM will void any warranty on the phone..If its only the touch screen that is bad you can pick one up off ebay and do the repairs yourself...google and you will find detailed instructions...
Sounds like you need a new digitizer........Ebay has them for around $30 (U.S.)
Purchase a small Torx driver set, and replace it......
I meant to say Hard SPL
Yup I meant to say Hard SPL.
This is just wrong the way they say it was the mainboard. Im sure it has something to do with the touch screen.
It is sad they had to resort to this. I mean I dont think Im THAT stupid. Hard Spl or not I think they should just fix it. Its not software related. The phone works perfectly. Just no touch input.
With that kind of money I could get another TP 2 off ebay. So its just wrong. Its a sham to get people to shell out 360 bucks for nothing.
This has thought me a very important lesson. Dont let these companies push you around.
try to attempt at asking it back without the repairs? i havent seen no one do it before, but its worth a try, im pretty sure they'll give it back cuz they "claim" you cant fix it and will be stuck with it, but in reality u have digitizers sitting around ebay
worth a shot mate
but then yet again, how much is shipping? :x
Clearly stated in the Hard-SPL thread:
OliNex said:
Hard-SPL Release Time!!!!
NOTE 2: this is unsigned Hard-SPL. no limitations on flashing ROMs (except of course some Radio roms). also, this has overwrite protection against HTC RUU's overwriting HSPL with a stock one, so if someone needs to revert to stock SPL for warranty reasons, a stock SPL downgrade package is posted here below. use this relocker *only* if you need to return the phone for warranty, and only use it as last step - after reflashing stock OS and radio. see steps at the end of this post about how to reflash stock SPL.

Simply downgrading to the stock SPL could have avoided this.
Yes downgrading could have avoided this but they lied !!
What bothers me the most is that they lied about the diagnostic. Its just very misleading and to me its extortion. How could the mainboard be bad? Or is it they simply think that people with smartphones dont know how they work. I will update you on the situation as time progresses. One thing I know is im not paying that "fee" for having it repaired. Shipping might cost me $70. So im already out alot.
sounds like a digitizer as already mentioned. very cheap.
i bought my phone off ebay. and seller said it was RAN OVER lol. still works great despite the scratches, chips,e tc and battery looks like it went to hell and back.. cells almost exposed in some areas
They probably have a policy where if the phone has been hardSPL'd (hacked) they simply replace the mobo. I can understand they wouldnt wont to train their staffs in every known hack etc they would want the phones to be in original condition.
Just tell them to post it back (you will have to pay the postage) then either set it back to standard and then try to get it fixed again or best option as others have said, buy a digitizer off eGay and fix it yourself or get a local boffin to fix it for you.
You need to accept the fact that if you hack your phone you will not be treated as a 'normal' customer. You get a lot of benefits from hard SPL but 'factory' HTC service wont be one of them.
First off, you are truly stupid for even paying $700 for a cell phone off amazon. That is outrageous and you know it. Besides, most carriers sell these for $150 - $200 with a new 2 year contract. Second, I agree with the others. If you would have called and had them warranty exchange it, you wouldn't be in this situation. hTC is a great phone manufacturer and their phones are top quality (price reflects). You have had one issue with the company because of something you did and/or failed to do with ONE of their phones. Don't go blaming them for your mistakes. Sorry if anyone is upset at this, i just can't tolerate someone coming on here and bashing the manufacturer that makes our phones
I can only foresee this thread degenerating more than it already has so I just closed it. ROM development is the wrong forum to post this anyway. As to the original OP... it comes down to the fact that you didn't put the stock SPL back on before you sent it to them. It seems logical they would use that as an excuse to get out of repairing your device for free. HTC or not, they exist to make money.
