Ive searched but with no luck - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

ive upgrade my Orange SPV m3100 today to a TyTn II, and first signs are impressive, however a few little things annoying me, and ive tried searching for help but cant seem to find it.
1, SMS/MMS
this is a massive pain in the ass to me, before on the SPV, it was split and made life easier. but now its merged and is driving me insane for some unknown reason (possibly OCD lol)
2. SMS main screen
On the left soft key it now says "Delete". again on the SPV it was new, made life easier and faster rather than trawling menu for new messages
3. The main today screen. The quality HTC black screen with big clock isnt an option on Orange so it would appear. if so can anyone tell me how? its looks great on the HTC Touch yet on here i have either the crappy Orange side bar or standard Windows bars
4. Touch FLO. wat programs does this work on, cus mine seems obsolete on everything
sorry to be a mega noob, but wud appreciate some input on making this PDA truely awesome

There is no way that you searched and didn't find the answers.

need to find better searching tricks, 1 advice would be to use google or just using a few key words in the forum's search tool

well i did search but "new sms" "delete" "mms" comes up with 32 pages. most of them reading thru, talk about new CABs, and for me thats a last resort, i no u think im being lazy, but after reading 100+ threads with no luck id thought id ask

I got the orange tytn ii before Christmas, and hated the Orangeness of the phone. Found the HTC plugin here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-htc-home-plugin-v1-0.html
Install on phone, soft reset and then go to "settings", "today" and move to the items tab. Tick the HTC home (not the HTChomeplug) option.
For the black "theme" which is just the black background with a small htc logo in the bottom right and the black bars top and bottom:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/s.php?querywords=htc+black+theme
Again install on phone, soft reset go back to "today" and on the first tab select HTC_new_default
You will still have an orange battery charge icon on the top bar though. I've been happy to live with that!

much appreciated mate. ill have a crack at that when I finish work later.
managed to sort touch flo out aswell
ill carry on searching thru the sms threads, but in the mean time, if any one can point me in the right direction id be very greatful
cheers again

You can find different versions of Arcsoft with the SMS/MMS split. However, it can cause problems when you install it overtop of the merged version. Your best bet is to read up on ROM Upgrading in the Kaiser Wiki, actually the whole Wiki, and then look for a cooked ROM that has the split version of Arcsoft loaded by default.

He is correct. Messing with the Messaging system can bring on Gremlins. Best leave it be or get a ROM that has that from scratch. I've come to be ok with the combined SMS/MMS. At first I didn't like it but I'm fine with it. What I really disliked what the threaded SMS on 6.1.

Think you're stuck with the combined mms/sms. You could always make another folder and manually copy your received mms's over to that. Can't say it bothers me too much. Cure your OCD by convincing yourself that an mms is just an sms with an attachment!
Regarding the previous post. Once you have downloaded the cabs copy them into a folder on your phone (eg. my downloads) and install them, then soft reset.
Once you have it up and running you can go back to "today" (settings) and choose from the items tab what other notifications you want to display below the "big clock"!!
Top tip if you're with Orange. I managed to blag the Orange Business data tariff of 250mb per month for £8 per month including VAT. This rolls over as well!! Phone up customer services and ask (nicely) if they'll bolt it on for you. If not ask for the data tariff department and sweet-talk them.

nice one guys, many thanks, ill let u no how it goes in a bit

hey, spot on so far mate, any other tips? or things that are good to install, got msn so happy with that too
by the way ive got a great blag for the business net user, just wondering wat questions they asked?

no luck blagging , just out of curiosity, is anyone else having problems with IE lagging loads whilst u scroll down even tho the page has loaded?

help a newbie with new tilt

First off thanks for the information outlet! I wish I was more up to date with the technology but unfortunately I am lost reading the stickies and wiki's on
RAM's and CAB's etc so i am simply going to ask for help. I do know how to search and read but I am not smart enough to know what I am searching for lol. I just got a new ATT Tilt as my last one was stolen and I am having some issues that I believe are ROM related. First off it does not always go to sleep mode running the battery dead at night if I get a new message, the touch screen is slow and sometimes unresponsive, I hate the fact that mesages are not in chat style format, and overall the phone is kinda slow. I'd like to make it easier to store items on a media card ets. Is there a ROM out there that you would recommend and are there any applications you suggest that I cannot live without! Thanks again for the help and minor beating!
Rich!
version
btw the ROM version is currently 1.62.502.0 dated 01/17/08 and it is windows mobile 6 ce os 5.2.1622 build 18128.0.4.4 if that means anything!
Email me @ [email protected] I'll be more than happy to explain your questions. Flash a new ROM on your phone. I have Schaps 4.31 and never looked back. I'm pretty satified with this one and this is the only one I've flashed on my TILT. I've seen plenty. Hear from you soon I guess. Take care.
P.S. the reason why I didn't write anything informative on this post is because their is so much you can do on the phone. Just depends on what route you want to take.

inst hardspl, unlock sim and rom, flash to 6.1 with 6.1 radio, disable sleep mode through kaisertweak or schaps, if flashing 6.1 it should have threaded sms(chat style texts),use touchflo to make touch screen more responsive,if using 6.1 rom your device should run better since benchmarks proved to run faster,i prefer 1 of dutty's 6.1 roms.most info you seek can save you time just by lookin at the kaiser wiki

Fixed Keyboard/Touch screen and more ATT Tilt

*Second post is a quick tutorial of all the steps I did*
For the past year+ I lots of problems with my tilt. Terrible keyboard response problems, like the keyboard only working 25% of the time. The touch screen being unresponsive or slow 50% of the time. I've hated my phone. Thought it was just a piece of junk. I soft reset so much I thought the reset button was going to fail.
I tried nearly every new ROM that came out, each time after being dissapointed because my problems remained, then I'd move on to the disable xt9 cab, tilt keyboard fix cab, keyboard speed up cab (which I'm still not sure if works, since I now have my initial keyboard delay set at 0 and I don't know if I see a difference), etc. Tried the touch sensitivity registry edit, installed the (I think) x1 touch sensitivity cab. But nothing seemed to change a thing.
I had realized that most of my issues were software related because sometimes things would work fine (for a couple minutes). I've tried the press the hell out of the keyboard buttons fix that was supposed to regain contact between the key, and the sensor for the keyboard, and pretty much everything out there.
Then I recently installed the HTC ROM for the Tilt, and voila, I have a new phone, works nearly flawlessly.
Since then, I have installed Manila 2d (start with update 20, install everything included, then install the latest version) youtube/opera/google maps/audio manager/pictures etc. all work perfectly, installed the Manila2D v20 N2A patch which fixed the weather tab to show my home town, M2DC and applied a new skin, Total Commander (to move the edited weathercities file), Wstask (awesome), ATT Navigator, Windows Live (great for syncing contacts), and it works perfectly. It's fast. I can use my phone now without the struggle, and am happier than I've been in a long time.
I haven't heard anyone suggesting this so I thought I'd let everyone know. This is the phone I always wanted from my Tilt. I have to assume that the minor hardware differences between versions creates a problem with non-native ROM's, and if you are having problems I recommend trying a factory ROM made for your device, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Dustin
*edit* As I'm sure most know, there are hardware issues with the keyboard for many, this will obviously not fix those issues. However, I was able to fix the massive software issues I've had which also effected the keyboard. I still have a testy Y key, but it's not a huge issue when compared to what it was like before. My phone works great.
Correct Forum?
Flashed to the HTC ROM for the AT&T Tilt, download here:

I've been having the same issues with my tilt as well. EXTREMELY annoying. I love the tilt, but hate that it constantly lags.
Do you have a link to the ROM from HTC?
The last ROM from HTC for the tilt gave me problems
Yes please post the link as i am also having this problem.
Thanks
Link inside!
Here y'all go. It's important to note that this is ROM build 1.62.502.0 and will change your radio to 1.27.14.09. Further info can be found HERE
HTC AT&T Tilt ROM
Different link to the Rom
Here is the link for the page HTC posted the Tilt ROM download if you would like to read first before downloading:
http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=67&cat=2&dl_id=94
Hope this helps you guys. For me it was night and day. Let me know if this helps you guys.
Also, I wonder if there are any ROM cooks out there who are interested in cooking ROM's based on the Tilt ROM. That would be sweeet!!!
Dustin
*edit* I'm not sure about the ROM tmnt.mikey posted, but the link I've posted does not change the radio to that version, I flashed and have radio version 1.65.21.18. I'm not sure what radio I was using pre-flash (oops).
does this work with kaiser as well?
because at&t does not have the front camera...
so if i flash to this rom, will it render my front camera unusable?
not that it's really that important, i'd rather have my keyboard functioning well again.
other than that, is there any complication if i run this on my kaiser?
because in the HTC page, it's said... only for at&t tilt...
Kaiser ROM
I have no way to know if this ROM will work for the Kaiser, someone would have to try it out and let us know. I can't imagine it would brick the phone, but the keyboard layout is different, and the front camera thing. However, you might look for the latest Kaiser ROM from HTC then apply all the cabs you want and see if that works for you. I installed the ATT ROM, then did a soft reset before the apps were loaded to save space and clutter, then installed just the cabs I prefer.
It's been almost a week now, and it is still working perfectly. I've installed almost 20 different cabs, it is running faster, and more stable than it ever has. I love my phone now. The difference is stunning. I haven't had any issues thus far, and I've never experienced that before. I hit a button and it works, I touch the screen it works. I'm going off about it so much because I want everyone to know this phone is not a lost cause. I'm still a little in shock how well it works. I had written it off, and thought between HTC, and Microsoft that this phone was just going to remain a glitchy pain in the rear. My phone was so difficult to use that I almost stopped texting all together. I was practically marking off each day on the calendar waiting for the remaining year of my contract to run out.

i actually followed the link from dustintm...
but the download was not for my area (i'm in singapore)
and you can't download it anyways...
you need to key in your serial number...
and it has to match the region...
so if that really fixed the keyboard problem...
congrats to those guys in the same region as dustintm...
as for why it happened, i also don't know...
i read in some other thread that it's unlikely if it's dust or the rubber...
i also think it has to do with the ROM, since some days my 'a' keys works fine...
Asian TyTN II ROM
Hey Jonathan,
Here is the link to the HTC Asia download page for the TyTN II:
http://www.htc.com/au/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=13&act=sd&cat=all
Just so everyone knows, this ROM change I am talking about does not fix hardware related issues. I still have a testy "y" key, it works most of the time, but I do have to press it harder at times.
Prior to my find, I was having massive keyboard problems, sluggishness, having to press each key multiple times, etc. I was also having similar problems with the touch screen too.
This will not fix a hardware issue (obviously?). But I've found the new factory ROM has made my phone operate almost without flaw... for the first time. Responsive, stable and consistent. I can deal with the "y", I couldn't deal the snetacnes loking lik tihs (sentances looking like this (all the time)), and all the other problems/lock ups, etc.
Dustin
Keyboard problems sound like a hardware issue. You should try to find a local cellphone store that does repairs.
There is one in L.A. that can fix this for under $50.
Keyboard Problems
I found that I was experiencing hardware (keyboard), AND software related issues (keyboard, touch screen, sluggishness, and lock-ups). After installing this ROM all software issues have disappeared. I am very certain of this. One example is that occasionally the keyboard would work almost flawlessly (with the exception of the y key) and other times it was a complete struggle, multiple keypresses to register once, delay, etc. That made it clear to me that I was having software related issues.
I imagine it could have been ROM issues, or software related conflicts, but either way, I have solved my problems. I flashed to the latest HTC ATT Tilt ROM, and the following programs/cabs:

be a hero post all your cabs or links
So, it is heresy you speak! Stock rom! Yeah, I too am sick of the laggy unreliable roms. WAY too much wasted time, energy and effort. Gone back to ATT even though on TMO. How about posting your cabs or links for the lazy ones of us out here?

Also, did you get rid of the AT&T bloatware on yours as well? On a quest for the perfect ROM myself, so I will keep watching the thread for more info.
Would like to see those links as well.
If you want to leave out the ATT bloat ware, after you go through the screen align, do a reset. It will fail to run the script for the **** add ons and then you have basically a virgin rom.

Hopefully I've removed the infected file.
I didn't know glossyblackbars.exe had a virus???
Don't need it anyway, I deleted it, recompressed the cab files and re-upped to rapidshare. I edited all my posts with the new zip link.
Please let me know if it's virus free now... so sorry!

Thanks so much, Dustin!!! I think I will be loading the AT&T 6.1 ROM again, following your fixes, and praying that my 2-PC ActiveSync problem somehow gets resolved along the way, too. (We need a "crossing fingers" smilie! HA!)
I'm just not looking forward to setting my Tilt up all over again. Must wait until I'm in the mood.

So Confused Choosing which rom!!

Hi there... im pleased with myself for having dumped the stock ROM (4 Raws) and then going through the HSPL, which i checked is good!!
ive got my touch to use WiFi and not 3G when using the net at home even tho im on Orange Uk which is supposed to be set to 3g only etc
but i want to got WM 6.5 but am so unsure of which version to use... tbh i can seem to find out which release has what functions, no language stated as i read some where spanish or something lol!
i just see V12, V13 V14 to download etc no real explanations as to the content... Well not for a novice anyways..
so i know it may have been asked before but would someone (or many) please point me in the direction of something that is stable with no known major issues (such as wifi not working or something) and looks nice/fucntions smoothly...
if possible!
thank you so much to all that have helps via the modding topics and all those that reply here!
thanks!
Dave
A lot is down to personal preference
I have Jade Overloaded WM65 OS 5.21806 OEM 2.33.721.1 on my device, try it see how it goes if you don't like it try another.
go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524102
can i simply put a rom over the top of the other then??
i am a real novice but trying to learn been on here hours going through dumping and the hspl... slowly but surely!
there are a few areas still im still in the dark about...
1) i regedit all the time on pcs and lappys etc but how do you on the fone?
2) still a bit vague on how to actually install the roms...
i have jade customRUU, but i read that was for just updating the splash and something else without installing a whole rom? i could be well wrong but im sure i did read that!
just not sure what to do tbh! lol!
thank you so much for your rom suggestion and if you could shed any light on my other qu's i'd appriciate it so much!
thanks again!
Dave
Yes you just flash it over old rom, its like upgrading a pc it wipes all personal stuff etc
to edit registry you need prog like total commander
go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=514406 you will find all you need to flash new roms on your phone
My advice for WM6.5 is to wait for the official Microsoft release, that is September 2009 (hopefully). All of WM6.5 ROMs on this site are beta, so they all have bugs. From all of them i'll recommend pdaviet's v14, but it's only my personal opinion.
If you still want to flash, just read this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=514406
and knock yourself out!
Good luck!
thanks lex i went with flubs recommendation and while its great there are some things im not too keen on!
i love the wifi side of things and how thats a priority over using the 3g etc
still cant get the weather to function tho... as you say im sure things will improve once the official release comes
having same probs with weather myself.
like lex said all are beta and have some bugs, you just gotta find one your happy with for me personaly its Jade Overloaded WM65 OS 5.21806 OEM 2.33.721.1 the weather function is no prob I will sort it out hopefully but if not I can live with it I will just remove it from home screen LOL
yeah still working out how to do things... being my 1st wm system...
wanna change the order in start menu..
quick link/button to turn wifi on/off
change the homescreen both features and order...
change the background as that is a little disappointing lol
i was looking at the manila 2d is it? but seen so many people having issues with it im not sure i wanna install it!
lol lots of reading searching to do :-( haha!
If you flashed the overloaded rom I suggested then you have touch flo installed you need to go to settings / today items tab and select touchflo
if you wanna change order in start menu you can select and hold an item menu will opo up saying move to top
hi flub!
seems i was running with Windows Default... which i actually liked.. but if i select something else that deselects :-(
i just have touchflow selected and pressed ok... i like the layout gonna take some gettin used to! lol
i went to the weather options removed what was there and selcted add to be presented with a full list of towns etc...
selected the one closest to me.. it updated and is working!!!!
pitty the default wont work tho! will run with the touch system from now then!
thank you so much! your help/advice is very appriciated!

you can use a registry editor then navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\OEM\
Under the registry key, create a new DWORD value with value name as SMSInboxThreadingDisabled and set it value data to 1.
or here is a cab file to disable sms conversation http://www.ziddu.com/download.php?uid=a6uanZema7OelOKnZqqhkZSrY6ybl5mo6

Newbies guide. How to get your Orange SPVM700 (Trinity) running WinMo6.5

Get yourself an xda-developers account so you can ask questions and become part of the community.
I know when I started looking into all this it just seemed like such a daunting task. There was so much information I just didn't know where to start. I looked and looked for a guide that would explain it all to me in one go but just couldn't find one. I had to read around for days trying to get all the information and tools needed to do it, then I had to experiment with lots of failures and swearing before I got the technique right.
It was only when a friend asked if I'd help him flash his M700 that I started to write a pretty detailed email for him. I then decided I'd post it here for you guys who are struggling because I know a few days ago I would have killed for something like this.
Right, we're gonna do the following:
1. Unlock the phone so you can use any SIM and any ROM even though it's locked to orange.
2. Upgrade the HARD SPL to OliPro 1.20
3. Upgrade the Radio version to 1.56.70.11
4. Upgrade the ROM to WinMo 6.5
5. Install a couple of little extras
First off make sure you have the latest ActiveSync 4.5 installed.
1. OK, first lets unlock it:
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293957 and download HTC_Trinity_SIM_CID_Unlock_v1.zip
You just have to plug the phone in so it connects and run the Auto_unlock_v1.bat and follow the prompts.
It'll put your phone into bootloader (the tri colour screen) then flash it with a new radio. It's a really early version of the radio (1.16...) but it doesn't matter cos we'll upgrade that later.
It'll turn itself off when it's done so you need to turn it back on but leave it plugged in.
Keep following the prompts and eventually, it'll ask you on the phone screen if you want to unlock it. Say yes to both.
There we go, now you have an unlocked phone. But the old radio has probably made it so your satnav won't work.
2. Next let's get a new Hard SLP on there so you can flash other ROMs and Radios. This is the bit that took me ages cos finding the right one isn't too easy. I tried a couple but they wouldn't flash the radio then I heard about Olipro 1.20. I could only get hold of the latest version Olipro 1.30 and it took a while to track down an earlier copy. The latest 1.30 version doesn't work when flashing the 1.56 Radio so you need to have the 1.20 version.
Download the Olipro Hard SPL 1.2 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380093&page=20 post #196
This is basically just another bit of software that will replace the SPL on your phone so you can flash Radio's and ROMs at your leisure.
Again, make sure the phone is plugged in and connected and run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe. It'll stick your phone in bootloader and do a little update that won't take long at all.
3. Now we're ready to flash the Radio. This is basically the drivers and settings of the phone that are there regardless of the actual version of windows you have. So once you flashed this radio (which is the most up to date) you can stick any version of windows mobile on the top and this will still be here at version 1.56.
Download the 1.56.70.11 Radio from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380093&page=5 post #44
Don't worry that it's all in Chinese. It still does the business on the phone and it's all still in english afterwards. You just have to remember which buttons you clicked on and which boxes you ticked from when you used the ROMUpdateUtility before.
WARNING! This will hard reset your phone right back to factory defaults after it's done, You need to ensure you've backed up all your numbers and files etc. You have been warned.
Connect your phone again and run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe from the 1.56 radio folder.
This will take a little bit longer, it took about 5 mins to do the update on mine.
Once it's complete you will need to turn your phone on again. It will first of all display the version of ROM then for a brief moment it will flash the Radio version on the screen, if it says 1.56.70.11 then you've got it right, if not then you'll have to try another HARDSPL tool. Don't worry if you miss it cos you can always check it on the 'Settings | System | Device Information' tab.
4. Ok now this is the bit where the choice is entirly up to you and you really do have to do what everyone says and experiment. There is no 'One ROM to rule them all...' Everyone wants different things from their operating system and you just have to play around until you get one you like. Some people want all the fancy bells and whistles of Manila2D (Touchflo) from 6.1 or the fancy honey cone start menu that comes with 6.5. I personally wanted a fast and stable operating system with has lots of free RAM and not too much rubbish that will slow the phone down. Remember our beloved Trinity's are getting a bit long in the tooth these days and even the most modern handsets (eg Touch HD) have trouble with WinMo 6.5 in some of it's forms. If you just want to get it upgraded then try this one out to start with, then when you realise how easy it is you can flash away til your hearts content.
Download Tomme45i's brilliant 6.5 ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=545758 You'll struggle to find a faster ROM out there. This is the 27017v2 which is one of the latest releases of WinMo6.5 out htere.
Connect the phone and run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe from the folder. Follow the prompts as usual and after about 5 mins it should have finished.
Turn your phone back on and hey presto! you're up and running with WinMo6.5.
All you have to do is re-sync you phone and all your numbers are back then you're away.
See that wasn't too bad was it. All it took was a few days researching on the XDA forums and endless head scratching when things didn't work. I think most of that time was just because I was unsure exactly what to do and in what order. if I'd just had a guide like this to at least get me through once I'd have found it a lot easier. You should still go away and do the research into any software or ROM/Radio you want to use because the threads contain a lot of useful information.
NEVER post a questions until you've read the whole thread cos chances are it's already been answered.
5. Just a couple of pointers about the ROM.
It was made by a Polish guy so there are a couple of things set to Polish. You will have to change the regional settings in 'Settings | System | Regional Settings' back to the country of your origin.
Also the finger keyboard is set to Polish and he hasn't included any other languages. You'll have to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=545758&page=3 to post #30. Download the skin set and copy it to your Windows\Skins folder on your device. This will allow you to select other languages for the keyboard.
It is quite a bare ROM so for that added little bit of BLING I added the S2U2 screen locking application. It basically gives you that little unlocking slider thingy from the iPhone (spit). Go to somewhere like http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Enhancements/S2U2-52386.shtml to download the CAB and install it as normal.
I also hate IE6 on these tiny screens. For a much better browsing experience I recommend Opera from http://www.opera.com/mobile/ You can scroll around the page and double click to zoom in. The tool bars also disappear when your browsing to give you more screen to play with. It works for me, you may not like it.
So that about wraps it up for this guide. I hope some of you total newbies find it a bit less daunting this way and will not be too scared to give other ROMs a try in the future, It's all about what you like and what you want out of your phone at the end of the day.
Please don't forget to donate some money to the chefs (especially Tomme45i) for all thier hard work if you appreciate their product. It doesn't have to be loads even if its only a pound or two. If everyone does it it mounts up. A happy chef is a chef who gets paid and releases lots of fixes/upgrades.
Do I have to take out memory card during this proccess?
Others have said you have to. but I must admit, I forgot at least once when i was flashing a ROM and it didn't seem to make any difference.
Best to take it out I guess as one of the other steps might rely on it not being in there.
Let me know how it goes.
Fantastic!
Only question-do you have P3600 or P3600i?
I have VPA compact GPS (P3600) and it seems to be different ROMs for them?
As far as I know the P3600 is exactly the same as the M700 except it has different casing. I'm currently using a different WinMo6.5 ROM with Manila that was made for a P3600 with no problems.
The P3600i has twice as much RAM memory and does require different ROM's to run.
I did it all that you said and everything is working fine, thanks for great info.
But I dont like installed ROM that you suggested and I want to flash with other one. My question is what I should flash, only ROM or I have to flash radio, olipro...?
The Radio and OliPro are now on your device until you decide to change them and overwrite them with something else. You only need to download a new ROM and install that on your phone as in the last stage of the tutorial.
This ROM by Tomme45i is very quick and very stable but it is quite simple too. Most people want something a bit more flashy. The problem with that is, with our old phones, the more bling you add the slower and more unstable they become.
I have recently put a good ROM on my phone. It is by Narshorn. It has the 23016 build of Windows 6.5 and a nice Manila2D front end (as well as the CHome front end where all the items are stacked top to bottom but I don't like that. I much prefer Manila2D). I think he is about to release a new version of it with some bug fixes in today (09/09/09) so it might be worth waiting for that.
Here is the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549146
It's well worth reading the thread to get a feel for the limitations the ROM has, but so far I've found it to be very fast and stable.
Don't forget to donate to Narshorn for all his hard work. You only have to give him a few pounds and it all adds up. He had over 200 people download his last build and only 2 donated.
The best thing to do at this point is to head over to the ROM development thread and just READ READ READ.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=359
Choosing a ROM is a very personal thing. Some will be perfect for someone and horrible for his friend. It just depends what you're looking for.
I only wrote this guide to get people started, the rest of the adventure is up to you to discover.
Good luck
I install tryniti 6.1. OS ultimate edition and for now I am satisfied.
Glad to hear it. Stick a link in to that ROM so others can try it out if they want.
Of course for me, I'd always try and find a 6.5 build because it has lots of finger friendly additions that mean you never have to get your stylus out to press any fiddly little menus.
Congrats ! Very GOOD Guide for new starters !
Hi chimpsinties,
I am reading since three days all the Trinity section here at the forum, each days three hours at least. I could say, this guide is quite actual, complete enough, and pointed very well, for one to start flashing an HTC P3600.
As myself.
Well, I am not a total newbie, I have flashed some months ago another device- FSCT830. But concerning Trinity- I have had no idea about until read here.
The device data up to the moment are:
ROM Version: 1.23.405.2
ROM date: 03/11/07
Radio Version: 1.38.00.11
Protocol Version: 32.71.7020.12H
ExtROM Version: 1.23.405.103
I assume the device is HTC P3600, but not HTC P3600i. Right ?
And before start asking details: is there any difference in your guide for G3 and G4 devices? How to determine what is it?
So I would to ask you some questions regarding the procedure and the availability of all original applications and devices in the new ROMs.
Please find below right inbetween your sentences, but IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
I am eager to test a new ROM !
Thank you in advance for reply.

Right, we're gonna do the following:
1. Unlock the phone so you can use any SIM and any ROM even though it's locked to orange.
2. Upgrade the HARD SPL to OliPro 1.20
3. Upgrade the Radio version to 1.56.70.11
4. Upgrade the ROM to WinMo 6.5
5. Install a couple of little extras
First off make sure you have the latest ActiveSync 4.5 installed.
1. OK, first lets unlock it:
SO, I HAVE THE DEVICE IN FRONT OF ME AND IT HAS BEEN NEVER LOCKED. I CAN USE ANY SIM CARD WITH. DOES THIS MEANS I CAN MISS THIS POINT ?
Go to..........................
There we go, now you have an unlocked phone. But the old radio has probably made it so your satnav won't work.
IF I STAY WITH THE CURRENT RADIO ROM- SHOULD I FLASH SUCCESSFULLY THE DEVICE WITH A WM6.1 ROM? (e.g. Tomme45i or other reccomended)
2. Next let's get a new Hard SLP on there so you can flash other ROMs and Radios. ..............................................
This is basically just another bit of software that will replace the SPL on your phone so you can flash Radio's and ROMs at your leisure.
I PLAN TO MAKE AN SSPL FROM HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293632&page=7 . IN THIS CASE I SHOULD MISS THE HARD SPL, RIGHT? ESPECIALLY WITH TEH DEVICE'S ACTUAL FW. CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.

IN CASE I CONSIDER TO UPGRADE THE RADIO ROM, BUT I HAVE MISSED POINT NO.1 HOW SHOULD I GUESS WHICH ARE THE BUTTONS TO CLICK IN ROMUpdeteUtility.exe ? IS THERE ANY GUIDE ABOUT, BUT IN ENGLISH?
...................................................................................Connect your phone again and run the ROMUpdateUtility.exe from the 1.56 radio folder.

Remember our beloved Trinity's are getting a bit long in the tooth these days and even the most modern handsets (eg Touch HD) have trouble with WinMo 6.5 in some of it's forms. I AGREE TOTALLY WITH YOU HERE. I PREFER WM6.1 AS IT IS MORE ADAPTED TO THE HARDWARE OF P3600. BTW, ISN'T TOMME45i'S ROM FOR THE NEXT MODEL (3600i) ONLY? MY DEVICE HAS 128MB RAM, SO I ASSUME IS THE MODEL WITHOUT "i" .
Download Tomme45i's brilliant 6.5 ROM from here --------------------------.
AS PER THE METHOD OF FLASHING: YOU RECCOMEND THE ACTIVESYNC ONE.
BUT I HAVE READ A LOT OF COMPLAINTS SAYING THE DEVICE LOOSE THE CONNECTIONS WITH THE PC DURING IT. THEREFORE I AM THINKING OVER THE SDCARD METHOD OF FLASHING. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT IT?
5. Just a couple of pointers about the ROM.

ISN'T OPERA CONSUMES MORE RAM THAN IE6 ?
AND LAST QUESTION: WITH ALL THE ROMS YOU HAVE TESTED, CAN YOU SAY WHICH OF THE ORIGINAL APPS AND FUNCTIONS ON THE DEVICE ARE NOT WORKING DEFINITELY WITH MOST OF THEM? E.G. WHAT WE HAVE TO SACRIFICE MAKING A NEW ROM FLASH?

Wow, that's a big post. I'll try and answer it all as best I can.
To start with, it's very important to know if you have a P3600 or P3600i. The P3600 has 64MB RAM and 128MB Flash, the P3600i has 128MB RAM and 256MB Flash. The upgrade ROMS are designed to work specifically with each version of the phone.
Tomme45i's ROM I link to in the tutorial is definitely for the P3600 (SPV M700) because I had it on my handset for weeks and it worked perfectly.
I don't know what a G3 or G4 device is? Sorry
Your radio version looks very old. I would get that upgraded to the 1.56.70.11
Regarding unlocking. It is probably worth doing the 1st step anyway. Even though you're phone might be SIM unlocked to use any provider, it might still be CID locked, which means it can only use the stock ROM that came with the device. You might need to CID unlock it to allow you to change your ROM.
That way, if you do the first step, you will get used to the ROM Update Utility screens and it won't matter that they are in Chinese for the 3rd step.
I would recommend OliPro's v1.20 of HardSPL. It is virtually impossible to brick you're phone using this and you will really struggle to get the 1.56.70.11 Radio on there if you use anything else. It's the only one I found that would allow me to upgrade the Radio.
As mentioned above, I've tried lots of combinations of software and the steps in the guide were the best way to get it all to work perfectly for me.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is much better for finger friendly use. Windows 6.1 still uses a lot of the old menu styles which you usually need a stylus for. I hate Windows Mobile 6.1 now and would always look for a 6.5 ROM. When I say that these devices are not made for 6.5, I only refer to all the extra really fancy bits of the software like TouchFlo3D, CHome etc etc
Some of the 6.5 ROMs are very fast and very clean (no extra fancy bits) especially Tomme45i's. I would strongly recommend you go for a 6.5 ROM and not a 6.1. Even the 6.5 by Nashorn I recommend in a later post is very fast and looks great with the Manila2D. I use it now instead of the more plain Tomme45i ROM. You also get the gestures support so you can sweep your finger across the screen to move menus (like the iPhone) which is very cool.
Regarding the technique used to flash the ROM, I can't comment. I've never used the SD card technique. I have flashed my phone over 20 times using the USB cable and never had a problem. What could be easier than plugging it in to the PC and double clicking a program.
I like the way with Opera you can scroll around a bigger page by dragging you finger and zoom by double clicking, however I found that Opera does not support online streaming video. I now use IE8 which is included in the Nashorn ROM. It's very nice. You can even choose to browse as a desktop device (so you get all the pages rendered normally) or a mobile device ( so you get the reduced size pages) which is a very nice feature. As you experiment with the software, you find what you like and what you don't like. It's all personal choice, what is good for me won't be good for everyone. It's just a guide after all
Of all the ROMs I've tested I've never found any of the basic things that come with Windows Mobile missing. They all usually have Office, Windows messenger, Media player etc etc. I've never found myself having to sacrifice anything to run a new ROM, you usually just find extra things you didn't know you needed
I would say, a finger keyboard is very important, the combination of a 6.5 ROM and finger keyboard means you never have to get your stylus out any more. Both the ROM's I recommend come with a Finger Keyboard included.
It's just a case of finding Cabs for the things you want extra, S2U2, GAlarm, TomTom etc.
I hope I've been able to answer all your questions. Most of what you're asking is just a question of what you like. This is why they always say, 'Just try things until you find what you like'. I wrote this guide so that people who didn't really know what they were doing could get a feel for it and then experiment on their own.
Best of luck, and don't forget to donate to a chef if you like his cooking. That way they will continue to cook for us on this old hardware.
Nice thread - very informative. When I think of the fun and games I had when I first found XDA Developers and downloaded what I needed to unlock my Orange SPV M700 (had several screens open and several downloads on the go)
I have the Narshorn WM6.5 build with Manilla 2D and it has given my phone a whole new lease of life (I was getting bored of WM6 and was looking to buy a new WM6.5 device)
Stuck in Tri-Color screen
Hi,
Thanks for composing all the steps here in an easy to follow manner.
My phone is in super CID mode.
I'm running Vista ultimate.
Whenever I try any of the steps you've specified, they phone goes to the boot loader and remains in tri-color mode. The connection with vista mobile device center is cut off, but the phone itself is not stuck. If you disconnect the USB it says "serial" and if you connect it, it goes back to "usb".
Nothing more happens.
I tried SD flashing as well (renamed the file as specified), but it doesn't do anything. I can start the boot loader, but it doesn't do anything.
I've searched the forums for the error 260, but found nothing useful for flashing with vista.
I also tried unchecking the "allow USB connections" in the mobile device center, but then the device just doesn't connect.
What step am I missing?
Thanks.
Hmmmm
Unfortunately I don't use Vista so I haven't researched any problems associated with it. I know people suggest downgrading the USB drivers or if possible using an XP machine to do the flashing. There is no reason why the SD card technique shouldn't work although I haven't tried it myself.
It might be worth posting on the main board with your problems. I wrote this guide with nothing more than my own experiences in mind and unfortunately haven't had a vast amount of experience at this myself. Maybe I was just lucky to have got it right first time.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help and I hope you get it sorted soon. It's well worth persisting because getting WM6.5 on the old Trinity will transform it and give your years (or at least months) more life out of it. Unitl you get bored and want more power to play with all the cool new features like Touchflo 3D etc
Thanks
Thanks anyway. I'll start my quest for an XP machine.

I decided to follow exactly all your advices. And now I have a pretty good WM6.5 on this HTC 3600.
I am missing now the Video call and the (other than English) finger keyboard.
I think you have mentioned as finger keyboard, the one that appears when you are trying the write somewhere in the programs. You have not had in mind a special program, right ?
A per video cal- I have followed the developer's advice at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=545758&page=3 (post 21), but when I press the green key, still no 'video call' button. Am I missing something ?
I can also report the following navi progs are working just with clicking on the respective .exe on the memory card available with the old, original WM5.0:
Garmin XT5.020, TT7.915, MN7.4.3; iGo8.32, Navitel 3.2.6.

The FingerKeyboard is actually cooked into the ROM, but is missing the extra languages to save on space. You need to add the ones you want separately.
As I said in the first post:

Don't you have to enable the video calling in advanced options? or maybe download a small fix .cab file that will enable it? I can't remember right now. I've only ever used video calling once and that was just to see what it was like.
I'm glad yo got it to work anyway
Now you can try other ROMs and see which one you like most. I'm still loving nashorns rom with Manila2D but I think he's been having problems with it recently.
It can be tempting to stick with one ROM just because you have got it working. Soon you'll be so good at reflashing it'll only take you about an hour to do it and get all your programs and settings back exactly how they were.
How?

No, on an XP netbook (LenovoS10e).
there were several reports in the thread Vista has to be updated with some drivers before being capable to do the flash on Trinity.
I want to correct myself in a point:
MN7.43 starts, but crashes under WM6.5 I am still trying to find a workaround about that.
I've made all the changes to my Orange Spv M700 according to Your great guide!
It looks great!
Can anyone tell me which IGO8 runs on this ROM?
How can I change the default ringtone please? It gives me three choices without being able to browse to other ringtones....
I've got about 600 contacts I don't want to change them one by one....
Thank You!

new to WM 6.1 and having issues

ok so Im a noob when it comes to the HTC tilt. i bought it about a week ago and since then i have upgraded to WM 6.1 and installed the Kaiser Tweak, Black Theme, Opera Mobile 10 beta and Mobium GPS software. The phone seems kind of laggy, when i go to "wake it up" it will occasionally flash then immediately go "back to sleep". I also noticed today that when i slide the keyboard out to txt message, the word completion window pops up with nothing in it and if i hit the menu tab there are just hyphens in it, no actual words i.e. delete, forward,insert......so on. I need help. i flashed the WM 6.1 last night and didnt have these problems till about an hour or so ago....with the exception of the lag.
Welcom to the WM 6.1 'upgrade'
Although I've never had a Tilt (mines just the HTC version of a TyTN II), some of the issues you describe were problems I'd found with the default HTC 6.1 upgrade. Sometimes what people expect to be an improvement because it's newer, isn't necessarily better. If you want to go back to how it was, read up the Wiki here at xda-dev which will tell you how you can flash back to the original WM 6.0 setup (or perhaps you may prefer the slightly newer but still WM 6.0, 1.62 series ROM referred to here ).
ok....well ive been browsing and ive seen ALOT of these "cooked" roms. what r these exactly and has anyone had luck with a specific one. i know that everyone has their preference but again...im new. I dig the black theme and the threaded SMS is a must have. i also like the kaiser tweak....does any one have a file for threaded SMS if i decide to go back to 6.0
Maybe something about it in the wiki

No, no-one has ever had any luck with a cooked (or customised) ROM... But seriously if you want to know which is best it will depend what you want it to do and even then asking which is best is frowned upon here at xda-dev (because it can cause flame wars so it's a no-no). What most people do is try them and see. I've tried a few and always ended up going back to stock to get fast GPS. Have a search for threaded SMS - I don't recall if that's possible under WM 6.0 but maybe there's a cab around. Have a good read in the wiki section as well -there's lots of usefull info in there. I hardly ever use sms so what I have is good enough for my needs.
Check out Solace v3.1,
looks pretty spiffy if you ask me. Finger-friendly as well.

Well I'm not sure if you have tried that or not but, did you check your memory?? like is you mobile memory or even your memory card full or kind of full?? that really makes the mobile sooooooo slow and boring specially if you have an 8GB almost full memory card. One more thing, it's better if you close the word completion option as i had a problem before that the mobile had saved too many entries that it reached a limit were each time i try to write a msg it just freezes the whole mobile and that problem wasn't solved except when i stopped the word completion
