Quik GPS Alternative-? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I read a thread a while back (I would have swore I added it to my subscriptions, but can't find it)... that spoke about an alternative program to put on the phone that made acquiring satellite quite a bit faster. Was I dreaming? My searches are not finding it for me ( of course, there are so many posts with Quick GPS in them...I may just not be coming across it.)

New Tilt with comments and couple of questions

Trying out the new Tilt with BlackBerry Connect. BBC is working great but when the security policy was loaded and the password enabled the password screen comes up with a dimmed backlite making it impossible to see in sunlight and nearly impossible to see in doors. Any one else have this problem found a way to fix?
The Tilt has built in GPS and I have gotten it to work with both Google Maps and MS Live Search. I have noticed that MS maps do not show some on and off ramps. Google seems to show them all but is much slower at updating the maps as they scroll. The problem is that when in map mode BBC times out and puts up the password screen. Is this an unfortunate feature of BBC and its security settings? Has anyone experienced and figured a way to fix?
I think the Tilt has all the features I was looking for in one device but it isn't quite perfect yet. I'm also converting from Verizon to AT&T and have found phone coverage to be spotty but in certain towns in my area, they are 3G enabled and Verizon does not have high speed network connectively in the same area.
I am trying to replace my BB 7130e phone and corporate email and HP rx5915 PDA for GPS and MP3 player. So far the Tilt is real close.
Thanks for any help.
jesus you are the epitome of new users in this forum that dont know how to read...LOOK AT THE TOP THING THAT WAS STICKED IN THIS FORUM: TILT QUESTIONS!!!! put your question in there!!!! (yeah I'm flaming, but with good reason)
Thanks for the answer, oh that’s right you didn't have one. Yes I could have put it there but no I thought I would put it in the main stream where I might get a quick response. I would have guessed from all the appendages attached to your message that you are the kind of person I was hoping may have some thoughts on the problems that I have been having. Looks are deceiving I guess. Excuse me for getting your panties in a bunch.

Everyones looking for a quick fix. Use the search button and take your time, my friend... we all did.
I almost guarantee that any question you have has already been asked and answered.
Thanks for the kinder more gentle response. I have been searching several forums and have yet to uncover any possible solutions. I will keep searching. Thanks.
Sorry, can't help with your problems, pretty knew myself. FYI though, go to the google search link on the homepage. It is waaaaaay better at searching than the standard search button. Honestly, if ppl could just say 'use search' or 'sorry look harder' instead of trying to humiliate....

New Google Maps Mobile!

version 1.7.1.4 nice new look
http://mobile.google.com
Loaded and can't say I see much difference? Are the satellite views now hibrid, not sure if street names were on them before. Other than that I don't see the "new".
new directions view - turn by turn list with option to view map turn by turn
new transition slide to next direction
new iphone-esque plop down of location pin (callout)
new context menu for locations - click on a pizza shop after searching
new hybrid satellite view
new landmark labels in above view
double click to zoom (might have been in previous versions)
more
did you even use it for more than 10 seconds?

ummmm, well... yes, but obviously not enough, maybe 5 minutes. I did a simple search for FedEx Kinkos and I guess I missed the "Plop down". These are all great additions, it was just subtle to me. I've been using Live Search more and forgot the details of Google.
I wish Both Google and Live Search could add a "Heading Up" choice for mobile use and perhaps some hot key mapping.
I love Google. I wish I had held onto what I bought of it when it was $86/ share.
Why can't they add an "Update Available" option as on Live Search?
is the short GPS timeout fixed ?
New google maps - 1.7.1.4 - Get it Here
Uploaded it for you guys :

working great on my Kasier.
Enjoy,
NAdavi
whats the difference with this one?
...but doesn't exist an app like GPSTuner but that download/use/cache GoogleMaps images, and draw on it tracks, waypoints ecc ecc???
GpsTuner can use google maps, but you have to download it with the pc, then calibrate it. Will be fine if GPSTuner download in auto google maps images and draw on it
Looks like they integrated the "find location" and "find buisness" into one search function
The directions overview is different
seems a lil faster, but still no drag and drop re-routing. it would also be nice if the program didn't kill itself if I lost data for a sec
edit: I see this was covered in another thread
If Google would just add voice.... WOW!

Hmm, I'd say yes and no. I had to retry once before it aquired a lock. They've increased it, but it needs to be a little longer for a cold start I think.
Hi!
the previous version put me within 10 feet of where I was standing,
the new version, with my standing in the same place, puts me more than 50 feet away !
I am sure someone into GPS can explain better than I can....

That could just be coincidence. The precision of your location is a function of how many satellites your GPS unit has a lock on at any given moment. To really compare, you'd have to have made sure that a similar number of satellite locks were achieved when the measurement is made. And just cuz you are in the same spot doesn't guarantee that you had the same number.
I guess its possible that somehow the new version is "screwed up", but not as likely as the explanation above.
Oh, and yes it does seem like the GPS timeout issue is resolved or at least MUCH better. I hadn't used my GPS on my Kaiser in a few days, and yesterday, I was able to just test the "track my location" feature in the new Google maps. It waited for about a minute for the GPS to start up and get sat locks, then showed my location. So it didn't even ask me to retry. It just worked. The previous version would never do this.
But alas, no voice feature like in Live yet, but still its an improvement.
woudl you guys switch from live search to this new version?
I have installed and use both. Personally, i like Google's better for most purposes. Its a simpler, cleaner interface, with much less clicks req'd. So, I can use it while on the road more easily. Live is more robust, esp with the new voice and gas features. but it bothers me that I have to tap so many times just to get a map of some place.
Is there any way to have the map auto rotate when you are using GPS so you are always traveling UP on the screen?

Not that I know of, in either app. Only true route guidance apps, like TomTom or TeleNav do that currently...

What GPS software - carpark finder?

Hi,
I'm trying to look for something that does a simple task - record where my car is when I leave the carpark, and I can then recall that location later to get to my car if I'm lost (I have a VERY bad sense of direction, in fact, you can almost say I have no sense of direction ).
I've been looking at something like the Vito Navigator, which seems to do what I want, but it seems a bit of an overkill for such a simple task... don't need fancy things like voice navigation etc, maybe just a compass saying that my car is, say, 200m to the North of where I am? Does anyone know any simple program that does this? Many thanks in advance
i'd like this, too!! 1+
This simple program might work. Haven't tested it but the description says "mark the places of interest"
http://www.handango.com/PlatformPro...178310&productId=178310&detailTab=description
or try this one:

Why not just get a satnav software with POIs?

I also tried that (yes I have tried a LOT of programs yesterday ), that seems to be the closest to what I'm after at the moment... it's free so that's a big thumbs up from me

I have TomTom and Garmin XT installed on my Diamond at the moment, and yes they would do the job just fine, except that in both software, it takes ages to mark a point. Imagine getting out of the car, then standing there for a minute or two trying to mark a point in the software indicating where your car is! (ok maybe not that long, but you know what I mean).

or you can try www.nav4all.com
it's free too and has a button called "remember parking"
it is a complete navigation program so it's at bit more complex, but easy to use.

couple questions regarding to the 8925

I am sorry if this sounds noob but I recently upgraded my phone to tilt from 8525
I see that it has an internal GPS, does that mean I can use a third party software to use the GPS without using data connection(like predownload the map on to the SD card)?
thanks in advance.
Yes you can. Go under the wiki and find the TomTom taster version software and try it out for yourself. You get a free small map and it works rather well. I believe you do have to have your phone turned on however because it uses the towers signals as well if I am not mistaken.
But you definitely do not need any Data Connection. Just use Wifi or something to update your QuickGPS and you'll be ready to go!
Hope this helped

thanks for the information.
I see that if I want the maps I would have to purchase them.
Does google offer similar options at free of cost?
Sir Noob, please search before posting. Your questions have both been answered many times. You don't start a new thread (that means ask a question in a new post) until you have searched for the answer first.
And yes, Google Maps or Live Search Maps are both free services and they work pretty well, depending on your needs.
Welcome to the forum.

does google map need data connection to download the map or is there a place i can download the map packages?
sorry for triple posting, my browser is acting up again
Wow, I thought you spazzed out or something.
I really wish you would do the Search thing. This has been covered.
On the phone navigate to Google.com then select "More" at the top. It takes you to another page. Select Maps which takes you to the page to install the Maps. Once installed go to Start- Programs- Google Maps and you have it.

Nice......Thank you..
Ok I'm running a stock Fuze rom without the clutter, and I have not been able to use the Directions feature on the last 2 or 3 versions of Live Search. Anyone know of a fix or work around so that WLS will actually find an address that I search for?
Really wish I could get this program to work right, this version looks really nice.

How are you trying to type it in? Are you clicking on "New Ending Location"? After that, how are you typing the address in the location box?
EXCELLENT.. I've been waiting for this.
Yes, open WLS - click on directions, enter start and end locations. Result =
"Cannont find x location near x" x = everything I've tried.
The only way it will find anything is if I searched for directions to that location with a previous version of WLS. Another very strange thing, if I search for directions to my contacts from going WLS - Directions - to - contacts. It will not find any of my contacts. However if I exit WLS, go directly to contacts and click on the map location button. It opens WLS, and if I click - Map, it will find the location and then I can do searches based on this location. Which would be fine if I felt like having gas stations and wal mart in my contacts list. . .
Seriously no one else has this issue here? I searched other forums of people with similar problems, but none of those people have any answers as to how to fix this.
And ofcourse WLS is unresponsive, I'm on my 4th support e-mail with no replies.
Stock ROM? I've had ZERO issues with this version so far.
