H, 3G or E - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

There used to be a mod that kept the phone on E always (for battery saving purposes) until data was required or being used, then it would switch to H automatically. Does that exist for the Tilt? I had it on my old 8525....
thanks

Perhaps I mis-understand what you mean but here goes... I am not aware of such a mod.
The handset can be operated in GSM (2G) or UMTS (3G). Potentially faster data connection speeds are available (at possibly higher battery drain) when you use the 3G mode (if available to you) - in this case when a 3G connection is available it may be possible to use the HSDPA data connection (automatically demanded by your hanset only when data is required) but that depends upon: whether you have that service available from your providers masts, whether they have enabled for you it and also whether your handset has the HSDPA setting enabled.
On the other hand only GPRS or EDGE (see wiki here) may be available when a 2G/GSM connection is available. EDGE is basically an enhanced version of GPRS but does not match HSDPA speeds.
So you are mixing the EDGE data indication "E" with the HSDPA indication of "H". The only way your handset can go from EDGE to HSDPA (or vice versa) is if your signal received changes to provide HSDPA from EDGE (perhaps as you change location).
Of course you can disable both 3G and seperatly HSDPA - then you are left with either G or E (use the comm manager and/or the various tweakers).
Beware - some ROMS are incorrectly showing the H instead of 3G when no data connection is active and this is a known problem.
Probably too much detail but may help .
Regards

He needs a program to switch between those modes automatically instead of manually though the comm manager, when he enables/disables a data connection..

yeah, that is right.

You know what I do. I use Kaiser Tweak or AdvancedConfig to tell it to Disconnect my 3G connection after 3 minutes. Then When a program needs Data it connects to The 3G network, than when It doesn't need it it disconnects after 3 minutes. Phone still works otherwise. And My battery lives for days.

Let's see if I get this..
You want to run the handset in 2G (GSM) mode for normal voice comms but when you want data you want to switch to 3G (UMTS) so that HSDPA can be used?
I personally haven't seen anything that can do that automatically and understand the problem is that to change from one band to another actually requires a cycle off of the actual phone. There are plenty of programs out there that cycle the phone mode - perhaps you should put this requirement to Dani who has developed a Comm Manager Pro program - his software does this cycling of modes but based upon time and place (for instance) rather than the trigger that you want which is when a data connection is required. Try looking at this http://www.commmgrpro.com/ and asking Dani who is always on this site with the Hermes forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299070
Good luck .

Gotta be careful forcing the phone to Edge/HSDPA. Particularly if you force it to HSDPA.
I took a 2 hour road trip today and it took me coming back to figure out why my phone wasn't even getting a signal; it was forced to 3G. I set it to Auto in BandSwitch and it had a signal immediately.
Whoops!

speaking of road trips and HSDPA...
i took a trip today with my wife to Washington and had perfect signal the entire time.. until my battery died of course.
but HSDPA all the way..
i live in Jersey and have travelled to the NYC, the UK and Puerto Rico and have yet to get bad reception...with my old blackberry... im damn near posivtive i woulda had lag

i manually control my data connection through comm manager. i always have 3g off too on comm manager. However, my battery sucks ass and it doesn't last longer than 18hrs with normal use. However, my backlight is at full blast because i can't see the screen outdoors if i don't have it set to 100%. Wish i could see the screen outside during the day and i wish the battery life lasted longer.

Have you noticed any kind of lag in your device when using the AdvancedConfig auto disconnect feature? I "feel" that when I have this feature turned on the device lags a bit. So instead I have the long press end key mapped to terminate data connection and I end up having to hit that so many times during the day.

Hello
This is sort of on the same lines. I use the com manager built into the custom rom im using ( L26_Kaiser_Diamond_V9 ) and throttling back from a 3G/HSDPA connection to the Edge signal. Ive noticed a huge difference battery life. Before i would only get about 4-5 hours standby because I had an application running that kept the HSDPA active previously. If you use a messenger service like IM+ I strongly suggest upgrading to a rom like L26 that has the ability built right into its com manager. It more than doubled my battery life with 0 cost to messaging performance. If i have to hop onto the net or tether, its a simple button switch to re-enable 3g

Check the ussuall parameters that affect the consum for the device, like "Transfer", Wifi, Data Connection, BT, power save parameters, etc....
In the night, i left the PDA at 100%, and in the morning 8 hours later i have 96%... only 4% all night...

Hello and thanks for your answer. the wifi is of, bt is on but I'll power off, over the power save, in two minutes the kaiser is of. It shows in the top the icon with "3g" (I can't remove for the "g" normal...is this one motive for the excesive consum?.) and I think that no conixion es maked. In practice I don't make nothing for the consum. Other thing, please. The gps...why I have to connect to "gps fast" (gps rapido in spanish) before to make something with the gps. Each 6 days I have to connect to internet (wifi or gprs or lan or etc.).?.
Thanks.
the program you are referring to is merely a sattelite update utility; set it to automatically update and forget about it. i dont know that you HAVE to update it all the time, but it does make connecting and finding sattelites much easier.
As far as the battery, a new battery needs to charge and discharge several times before it will reach its maximum battery life, so it being discharged faster than you would expect is actually normal. you should notice its life will be extended after you charge and discharge it a few times, nothing to worry about

Well, you need to take care about all the parameters, Trasnfer (Transferir en castellano) waste a lot of battery. 3G conection take more battery that GPRS, and you must be sure that no process access internet in background. Try to switch between GSM and UMTS to see if you get better results.
About GPS, GPS Rapido starts every time you power on the device, so you don't need to start it before to use TomTom or any other GPS app. Simply start TomTom and have fun
you dont have to connect every 6 days, its just recommended to get super speedy locks thats all
I have BT on always and see about 4% loss of battery each night. I use the comm manager with a 3G button and turn off 3G, using EDGE most of the time unless I need a fast connection. I think this 3G connection is the main reason for higher battery consumption over night, EDGE is lower. Always keep WiFi off unless you are actively using it.
As far as Quick GPS/ Rapido, if you use active sync regularly with your PC, it updates every time so it will seldom if ever need to get a update over GSM since it gets 6 days of data at each update.
Regarding new lithium batteries, they don't need cycling like nicads to get full capacity, just charge and go but never leave them dead, ever.

Go to Settings, Phone, Band tab. Select "GSM" in the "Select your network type" (the first) pick list. Leave the second "Select your GSM/UMTS band" as Auto.
Doing this will force your Kaiser to use GSM/GPRS/Edge and not allow it to use UMTS or HSDPA (3G). Try this to see if it makes your battery last longer.
This change will reduce battery consumption the most. However, you can't use 3G speed network, unless you change it back. To do so, set the first pick list back to Auto.
THere's a way to add a selection in the Comm Mgr to do this, but not sure if you would be comfortable doing it. It simply does the same thing as the above with a button press.

Wifi
Hi all,
Just another quick battery question... While I know on my Jasjam that having the Wifi switched on drains the battery like no tomorrow, was wondering how long the battery on the Tytn II / Kaiser lasts with Wifi. Is it similar a similar length of time to the Tytn / Jasjam?
A friend is looking at getting it, but has said that he will be using Wifi almost all the time.
Does AT&T's Tilt and 8525 share the same battery? or just like TyTN and Kaiser using different battery??

Hello. I can see that without 3g the batterie go better.
Thanks to all for your help.

horrible and i mean horrible battery life..

so im running dutty no. 3 final rom with directpush enabled as items arrive.. now im constantly in H and my battery only lasts 2.5hrs in H mode.. compared to the hermes this is HORRIBLE! any one have any ideas? i know H means highspeed pda.. so im wondering if thats why.. i kno the hermes switched back between 3g/H..H only when downloading but the tilt seems to be H non-stop.. whats going on?
I am still on the stock rom and mine lasts 20-24 hours on average.
Well, you answered your own question. You're using DirectPush, which forces a constant data connection. You're using HSDPA, which is a notorious power hog when transferring data, and you're now using it constantly.
If DirectPush is that important to you (i.e., if you get mail so often that you might as well be in constant communication with the e-mail server, or if the mail is so important that you have to have it now), you'll need to find a way to switch off HSDPA in favor of EDGE or GPRS.
There's really no other option.
i like to feel important thats why i use direct push.. the job doesnt require it.. but they do require to check at least once a hour during normal business hours lol. i suppose to could set it to check every hr... shucks. why would it last all day on my hermes but under 3hrs on my tilt?
I've never got more than 35 hours battery life, with gprs (UMTS disabled), pushemail, and 1-2 hours of music playback...
The battery life is VERY BAD, my wizard's time was about 50-60 hours with same use...

I installed Duttys Comm Mgr with a 3g on off switch and when I am not surfing the web I am on edge. It has helped dramatically with my battery life. My job requires "as items arrive" Direct Push. I can go a whole day without charging on Edge.
3G was recently enabled in my area and I do not get more than 7hrs of batt life with DirectPush active. Before with EDGE I was good for the whole day (>12hrs).
HSDPA is the problem not DirectPush.

can you give a little more detail on your settings with 3g off hdspa off bluetooth on and moderate usage of wifi (less than 20mins a day) and only about 30min of calls i only get between 14-16 hours, any info on how to get the extra battery life would be apreciated
I have 3G, direct push, bluetooth on all day and my Tilt outlasts my TyTN by about 30%. I generally charge every other day with normal use.

When did AT&T enable HSDPA in your area? It's relatively recent to many metro areas, so it's entirely possible that the Hermes was on Edge 24x7 and what you're seeing is the additional drain of HSDPA and not the change in platform.
But if you're only getting 2.5 hours, there's something else going on. You've an app that's keeping it from going to sleep, you get e-mails every 5 minutes or so, or your battery is bad to begin with.

Sleuth your running your own cooked ROM for your Tilt aren't you? I loved your ROMS when I had my Hermes.

people seem to forget that the mechanism for mobile data is the same as for voice - when you are talking, the phone is just digitising your voice and sending it over the wireless link. Nobody seriously expects 18 hour talk time out of a pocket sized phone, so why do we seem to expect 18 hours of heavy duty data on-line time.
Ok - I know that is a bit simplistic - when you are talking, the data transfer is continuous whereas for ordinary web browsing etc. it is short bursts - but if you are running something which is holding your data link active a lot of the time, you are incurring a similar battery drain to talking - the Kaiser is rated for just over three hours talk time - don't expect 18 hours of push email! And don't forget that the battery drain is simply for running the transmitter in your phone, not for sending the data - sending one byte will consume as much battery as sending a hundred or more - once it decides to send a packet, it is committed to burning charge even if the packet only has one byte in it...
Martin
Just an observation...
I live in the DFW area and my battery life is not up to par with the 8525. I traveled yesterday to a EDGE only area and I noticed a dramatic increase in battery life. Are they related? I dunno at this point, just an interesting observation.

That is for sure your issue. The data connection is not only live, but is being used constantly. Turn off direct push and see if it reverts back to 3G. If so, make sure you are not set to use MediaNet as your primary network. Also, be sure to uninstall the hidden proxy (look for the cab that does this in the Cabs thread).
With direct push enabled, my 3G icon only changes to an H when mail is actually coming in.
On my Nokia N95, constant HSDPA connection too chews through the battery as opposed to "plain" 3G; that is, the Kaiser isn't an exception either... It's the best to fall back to GPRS (EDGE) whenever possible.

My internet drops when I'm on a call. Is this normal?

I've had a Tilt since it launched and have run multiple different roms. What has always happened since I bought it, is that my internet connection will drop when I'm on a phone. I don't understand. I shouldn't, right? None of my other non-WM phones dropped the internet connection.
That's one of the things I loved about GSM, I could be talking on the phone (via BT) and use the internet on it, but not anymore with this phone. IM+ will disconnect all the IM clients, which is the most annoying one. I think I've heard people in this forum say they don't have this problem. Is it a flaw with Windows Mobile itself (Microsoft catering to CDMA), the Kaiser model, firmware or my phone itself?
yep, drops my HSDPA when on call as well. It's probably normal.
hey man you know you can only use the phone and the internet at the same time on a 3g conection right? if its not that then i dont know whats up try a new rom i guess
hey i just saw that another person posted in here and had the same problem on a 3g network so i tried it out i can use the phone for data and a call at the same time im using a wm 6.1 rom not sure what one maybe its a problem with the service in your area
Man, some commas would really help..
Anyway.. when you say that u can use phone and internet at the same time - have you actually tried being on the call and browse internet? It does stay connected, but there is no traffic.
I don't think it has ever worked on my Kaiser. It works on my Razr v3xx. Maybe it is 3G. For some reason, now that I put a new 6.1 rom and a new 6.1 compatible radio, my phone is almost only on EDGE when I used to always be on HSDPA. Well, the battery life is better at least. I'll try again when I connect to a 3G network, which used to be always.
I don't think my Razr was limited to simultaneous voice + data only when on 3G.

I've known this too. Tethering and phone work in 3g for me as well.
yeah i did browse to a few sites made sure it was using the data. even made sure it wasnt just cached pages. hey if ur only getting edge maybe its ur radio rom? i was getting that for awhile new rom and it went away
I'm using HSDPA, never 3G (it switches to HSDPA when 3G is available).. it's definitelly faster.. but I have battery charge issues and no traffic while on call. Perhaps 3G doesn't have those issues, I will try it out.
I do get EDGE sometimes, but it's usually same spots. I guess some towers don't have 3G i-net connection, only EDGE. Some places, however, I always get HSDPA (usually where signal strength is high)
sorry i forgot not all 3g is hsdpa i should of clarified we have hsdpa over here
I have the same problem. 3G or H data connections drop when a call is made or received. reconnects when call is over. Anyone with ideas if it is the phone, radio or rom?
Solved!! After some digging around in the forum I found out that setting a limit to disconnect your data connection will cause this problem. If your using kaisertweak go under "Data" set the "disconnect after" to disabled (default) instead of the 1 minute(advised). for some reason this will now allow data and voice to work together and wont drop your data connection while on call anymore. Good luck with your device.

I believe the data connection can be on 24/7 and its OK. As long as its not 'active' i.e. not transferring data to or from the device.
The whole idea of GPRS, 3G, HSDPA is that they are always on... but not charging unless being used.
When active you have the animated double arrows showing data transfer... check the manual for the task bar icons to see. This is the same with all connection types (except bluetooth).

The whole idea of GPRS, 3G, HSDPA is that they are always on... but not charging unless being used.
When active you have the animated double arrows showing data transfer... check the manual for the task bar icons to see. This is the same with all connection types (except bluetooth).

Correct.
It gets a bit tricky with newer devices, however, if you don't have an unlimited plan because there's almost always something running in the background (weather updates, email polling, GPS download etc) unless you make an effort to stop each of them from initiating a connection. The best way to enjoy what a device like the Diamond has to offer is with an unlimited data package.
Which unlimited plan do you use in Egypt, mkhattab?
it take more battery life like this if it stell on guys !
rafter_01:
if you want to stop it completely jast prass the E or H icons on the upper bar and then press disconnect
it will stop the connection completely

Not always. There are quite a few ****ty networks in europe and other places that still use the old 'per minute' charging model on GPRS networks as well.
For people stuck with these bastards, it is worth having a timer somewhere to automatically kill the connection. but mkhattab is right. When i had the diamond from work, even with the timer set, it never disconnected even with push mail turned off, so it seems that they send out some sort of keep alive maybe?
Use Skschema to setup a script (they have examples you can copy/use as a tutorial - quite easy) to run an auto shutdown of 3G/GPRS every x minutes of the day, every xth day of the week/month etc.
link http://s-k-tools.com/?skschema/m_skschema.html.
I've tested it with Activesync and it appeared to work very well for the week's trial, I had.

MaroO-> I actually live in Dubai (from Egypt though)
You could try modaco NoData:
Hope It's ok to post this here, I know it is often included in roms. I have not used it at all on my Diamond, but it worked well for me in the past.

How to keep IM apps running

How can I keep applications like skype, IM+, ebuddy etc running for any length of time? Even with settings for always on and no power save, they seem to disconnect after a while, either just after a long time, or immediately after I start using the browser or other applications. And then some, like IM+, wont conenct anymore unless I force close and restart.

Are you using Edge or 3G? As far as I know, without 3G or 3.5G, you can't talk on the phone and keep the internet connection live. YMMV.
Well I have 3G switched on, but the strange thing is that when no 3G signal is available, or it's weak and drops for a bit, then the phone switches to G (gprs) rather than E (edge), or does the phone just not display E?
Having said that, it disconnects the apps regardless of whether I'm using the phone or not

hey there)
firstly about 3G <-> Edge/Gprs switching. literally speaking edge is a piece of hardware equipment embedded into the base station. afaik not every base station has it, so in case you see G that means that either you are served by above mentioned base station or all the channels are occupied by other subscribers which rarely happens nowadays, because carriers expand the capacity of the base stations in order to provide full range of services to their subs. in other words if 3G is not available you would see G or E, you can't manually force your handy to use Edge only, it's an improved version of GPRS so to say
as for the im apps disconnets. i personally use Meebo and it never signs me off. it doesn't matter if i use the phone or switch to other apps. it runs in the background as a service until i choose to sign off manually. give it a try. if it keeps running in the background then maybe Im+ have an option to keep connection alive in its configs. otherwise it can be a bug in the ROM you are using.
Hope it helps
Thanks, I'll give Meebo a try. I guess I found the 3G/G/E thing weird cause the last 2 phones I had did change from one to the other in sequence, so I assumed that this one was skipping a stage, especially as it is slower than my last phone when browsing.

edge/gprs (2G/2.5G) does not allow you to transfer data and to use voice service simultaneously. because it uses the same timeslots as voice does. but it won't disconnect you.
Thanks again for the recommendation, very stable and overall much better than previous apps I've tried for msn. The only few times I was signed off it signed me back in automatically.
