Recommended [VGA] application list - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Well i havn't used windows mobile in about 2 years, and back then it was all about trying to find QVGA compatible apps.
Since i'll be getting my diamond next week, along with a load of other people i'm sure, can anyone recommend some good/must have apps? I'm only interested in VGA apps, not upscaled stuff - unless you reallly think its worth it.
I think if we can build up a list it would help alot of people. If there's alot of repies i'll just keep updating this first post.
EDIT: Also can someone tell me whats the best GPS software? TomTom? iGo? Co-Pilot? And do any of them handle speed cameras and/of traffic?

vga apps
I agree, I am expecting my TD next week also and think this would be a good idea. I have been using Windows mobile for a couple years after being a palm user for 5. I currently have an Orbit 2. I also use Tom Tom which i really like. It really runs good on my Orbit 2, a lot smoother than on Palm versions.

realvga is the best application you can have on a vga screen. granted, it makes more incompatibilities, but it basically makes your screen 4 times bigger in total [2x wider and length]
apart from that, id say teksoftco's fingertouch keyboard which is great, although the diamond one looks great too.
apart from that, id say most stuff i use is multi resolution

Igo it is not compatible with the diamond due to it is sold with a SD card.
Tomtom is compatible with the VGA screen
coreplayer too

Is RealVGA working???
Hello is RealVGA working on the Diamond?
Does the HTC software include all Icons for 192dpi, 128dpi and 96dpi mode?

i have igo8 working on my diamond perfect, theres a few threads here about getting it to work and i believe there is a diamond specific version out there now. its much better than TomTom which lagged and took ages to catch up with where you acctually are! igo8 has so many more useful features too!

iGo IS very compatible with the Diamond and it looks absolutely amazing on the VGA screen. There are a few threads about this in the Diamond section of XDA including one that has very detailed instructions on setting up and tweaking the application. Search for it and you will find just about everything you need there

Almost all QVGA apps adjust themselves to the VGA resoution so you almost never have a problem. Maybe old games could be problematic but it's rare. So you don't have to go around looking for VGA apps.

The HTC CIO may be curled up in a corner crying now...
crying?
i think he has tears in his eyes from laughing.
why do a lot of people always insist that older is better.
touchflo 3d has way more options and is much fingerfriendlier than the old version.
so just a tip: do not use your stylus, but use your fingers. you will find that using the touch flo 3d really is a lot easier
looks beautiful runs terrible
i gave up! touchflow 3D, simply too slow and couldnt catch up with my finger.
will leave it for showing off when demo to friends only...
Yeah, it's not easier at all. It's much more work to get to the media player now, where as I could assign it to a hardware key on the Kaiser. Navigating the Kaiser with keyboard mnemonics was definitely faster and easier. TouchFLO 3D requires so much more finger/hand/eye movement in order to access the same information that would have been already on your screen right away.
I also hate having to scroll through all of the Cities in the US in order to get to Yonkers, NY for the weather. It was way easier when I could just type the name of the City in the HTC Home plug in. These iPhone-style lists are horribly frustrating to use.
I, think the regular touchflo is simpler to use because it is exactly that (simple) & boring... a few tabs and thats it. However TouchFlo3D has much more options, looks sweet, touch friendly & interactive; the fact that it takes more time to getting use to or figuring out does not bother me at all.
With this new plugin I rarely see the windows UI and I think that makes a huge difference, at least for me it does.
Another point to consider is how you use the device or what for? I use it primarily for the web, weather, texting & GPS & all of these are extremely easy for me to get to. As far as the extra scrolling to choose a specific city under weather should not be in issue, I set my city & a couple others in no-time when I got my phone and that's it no more scrolling.
I remember some time ago nokia, samsung, SE, mortorola etc all the big names done some stuidies and figured out the max number of key presses it should take to get to ANY menu option. It seems with all this fancy scrolling lists and interfaces thats lost now.
Even in an iphone - which you may hate, but is probably the best touch interface - its not exactly fast to get to things.

I've said this before - in experiments comparing the iPhone and the old TouchFLO, it was faster on average to get to things using TouchFLO.

Well, the devices are aimed at completely different markets. HTC generally aim their devices with keyboards at business users, whereas the Touch Diamond is a high-end general consumer product.

There are now tweaks that will speed up TouchFLO 3D quite a lot. Search this forum.
so......
will the old type of htc home plug in work with diamond?
i too was happy using it (on my trinity)
would be nice to have the choice
with the tabs you had people..weather apps...and more
so does anyone know before i bugger my diamond up
I think TouchFlow 3D is great, easy to use and looks very nice.
The only thing I'm missing are my tasks on the Todayscreen. On my Touch I used them as a reminder for certain things, but when you don't see them right away when turning on the phone they're useless.
I installed a Version of HTC Home Plugin earlier today on my dad's diamond and well... i guess it just isn't fit for a VGA Display. It is very small and the porportions are messed up. Anyone already tried to get HTC Home to work or knows of any VGA Version maybe?
I used to use Touch Commander on my Asus P750, as far as I'm concerned it's an exact copy which will work in VGA mode, as the P750 also had a VGA screen.
http://www.touch-commander.com/
But then again, with Dutty's ROM and the registry tweaks, TF3D runs pretty smooth.

Alright, I have had this issue too. Here is a cab for the Home Plugin for VGA devices (works on my TP).
I AM NOT TAKING CREDIT FOR THIS, JUST SHARING THE .CAB I FOUND SOMEWHERE ON THIS FORUM LOOKING FOR THIS. MADE BY PJC

Adding HTC Cube to Diamond ?

I'm about fed up with TouchFlo 3D, nice but pretty useless and I REALLY miss the Cube from my Touch Dual, much more convenient and doens't waste CPU cycles, so...has anyone installed it on the Diamond ?
Found a few existing CUBE topics, but not sure if there might not be interference and if a VGA skin is needed.

Ok had to hard reset...
Was hopeful after a post by SecureGSM :
"HKLM\Software\OEM\TFLOSettings:
also, there is one that is suppose to enable cube finctionality there:
EnableCube : default value (0) <--change that to (1)"
But not working for me.
Its not so simple as switching cube on. Cube is simply not there in our Diamond. If u try to install this Cube configurator from the Elf thread, u'll see a multitude of errors, missing files, etc. Cube may be functional here, but we'll be needing all those files
Yes, that sucks, the CUBE is x times more useful than TouchFlo 3D IMHO.
There must be a way though because it was added to non touch devices.
i dun think we'll have to descend to the non touch method, they use flash. i'm sure if we can get the Touch Cruise for example, and get their files, and put it in, it should work? i think
Catching up, I also thought this would do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=348437 but so far no luck either.
bump - hope someone can figure it out ;-)
Another bump, that would be such a useful addition, I'm sure the bright minds around here can figure how to add the Cube back ;-)
have u tried Touch Commander?
Not sure, got a link ? I tried the tools linked in the first message and no go, had to hard reset.
I know a guy who might be very good at this ... Duttie or something like that
Unfortunatly, he is not around (yet)
Sounds good, hope he joins us soon !
Have you considered something like this:

There are a couple of other similar GUIs out there and the good thing about them that they all VGA optimized.

Any news guys ? I was so happy with my Touch Cruise but bought the Diamond for the 640x480 screen and faster video playback.
The TouchFlow 3D looks fine but it's very useless to me, The old TouchFlo Cube from the cruise could be swept away and you had your normal windows todayscreen.
I tried the Cube thing SPD Mobile Shell but the old originall CUBE is way better I think.
Any solutions ?

same here, in fact I want it so much I've stuck with the HTC Touch Dual, aka Nike !

Copilot Live 7 Diamond Edition

Just came across this while bowsing the pocket GPS site. Anyone tried it, looks like a good alternative to TT7 and would be less hasle installing the maps.
http://www.alk.eu.com/diamond/
I'm already running Copilot 7 on my Diamond. I don't think this version is any different but I could be wrong. Installation of the standard version was easy anyway.
I purchased the Diamond version of CoPilot 7 from Handango. It installed quickly & easily. It's VGA & uses the scroll wheel to zoom in & out.
I haven't fully tested it yet but first use on foot lagged. I have messed a bit since so hopefully it will be better.
The gps picked up pretty quickly and accurately so happy there.
Copilot 7
hello,
Can you test it in your car ? and report if it lag like Tomtom navigator 7 or not.
tanks in advance.
@++
Lag? I've not noticed any lag and having used TT for several years now I'd likely be quite sensitive to any delays..
Mathew
I've been using the 7-day trial version of CoPilot7 on my Compact IV, and I have to say, the route planning seems to be WAAAAY better than TomTom5 on my MDA Pro! Not to mention that it seems you get traffic info on the CoPilot. Apparently, T-Mobile customers can upgrade to the full license for £50 all inc. Alternatively, for those that have a Diamond but not on T-Mobile, they might consider downloading it from Handango for just under £56:
http://www.handango.co.uk/PlatformP...pe=2&sectionId=0&siteId=172&txtSearch=copilot
For the price difference, I'm wondering whether I'd be better off paying the extra £6-odd and getting it from Handango - that way, if I do load a cooked ROM, I've still got the full software for CoPilot?

It may be an idea to pay the extra. I have flashed a new ROM 3 times in the past week so it's been useful having the files at hand. The CoPilot software auto installs when the Diamond boots up again which is very useful. I keep the files on the root of the internal storage as it recommends.
I don't know if it's the same for the normal version of CoPilot 7 but as I said the Diamond version is VGA and uses the scroll wheel to zoom in and out of the map.
I have been busy at work recently and haven't really thought about testing the software properly but I have some free time soon so will check it out more. In particular I want to check it when walking as alot have complained about the GPS on the Diamond when walking.
I've used quite a number of GPS navigation programs, Tom Tom 7, Co Pilot 7, NavMan, Garmin and I can say personal experience with Australian Maps is Tom Tom routes the best for me. I've had Co-pilot do a huge loop around a destination when there was a straight road to the place or choose really interesting routes.

Normal version also is VGA and supports scroll wheel zoom. I think the only difference is a specific install for the Diamond (due to lack of SD slot). Normal version is easy install anyway.

So, its been about a week, found anything?
I'm also very intersted in this.
BTW, the 7-day trial is only officially available with T-Mobile. I have asked ALK if there is a demo version of the Diamond edtion, but there isn't.
The other thing that puts me off is that for the combined price of the TD and CoPilot (with Euro maps) I could get a nice standalone sat nav solution. However, I have bene told by ALK support that if I buy the Diamond edition of CoPilot and then change my phone, I will need to re-purchase CoPilot. I don't know how true this is, but two different ALK support guys have now told me the same. However they did also say that the standard version would run perfectly happily on a Diamond.
It would be nice to confirm whether or not the Diamond edition does have other benefits over the standard, apart from the ease of installation. If not then I can't see any reason to buy the Diamond version.

The normal version is not VGA, if you look closely at the splash screen and the graphics you will notice a slight pixellation of the images/graphics. This is because the regular WinMo version is designed for QVGA or lower.
But the maps do not pixellate because I assume they are vector graphics (or some equivalent).
I have the normal Copilot 7 and can confirm that all the veatures mentioned for the Dimond version appear to work the same for the normal version.
I installed by using the Copilot Central to install the program, then I just copied the folders off of my SD card to the internal storage.
Some instruction for copying the SD card can be found here:

I think that like for TT7 the maps are registered to a code that is valid for the device it is being used on....change your device then there is a code bust and you cannot use the maps.....hence the need to get the maps again
.....not sure if/how you can transfer your maps from one device to another (when you upgrade)

Omnia or Pixon Port/Rom?

Ive noticed that the Manila cab from the blackstone has been ported over so was just wondering if it was possible with the pixon/omina.
I was playing with a friends today and I have to say, this phone is MUCH faster than the X1 and it is definatly a better phone. The only advantage the X1 has is panel and a hard keyboard.
As the Omnia or Pixon run of WinMo6.1 would it be difficult to port it?
I mean, it supports landscape which would obv be triggered by the keyboard being pulled out rather than a accelrometer.
Also, the camera kicks ass on the Omnia. Face Detection and 5mp! I know 5mp is impossible on the X1 but is face dectection too hard to implement? Im guessing the only difference between the two phones is the hardware, so face detection is done on a software level.
It would be great to have this on the X1 as I really like the Omnia and am tempted to swap my X1 for it. The only thing im keeping my X1 for is the panels (not sure why) and the hard keyboard.
Or could the panels be ported to the Omnia?

Wait ....... What ?
I dont know how about you, but surfing the internet @ 240*400 is a pain in the ass IMO. More: No d-pad, no OpenGL-ES (?), WAY worse battery life, etc etc.
The Omnia is no match for the X1.
[edit] Oh, wow, I totally forgot about the Omnia's 128MB of RAM vs the 256MB of the X1 ...
Haha, i personally feel that i will keep the X1 instead, how i was hoping to get a X1 or Touch HD , just go throw in the TF3D from Touch Hd, you will love it...

100% agree
Wow...any of you thought about reading.
I asked for a port of the ROM not a port of the hardware....
Merry Xmas
my understanding is that pixon is a toy phone with a crazy camera from hell
Well the Pixon is its own OS. The Omnia is a windows based phone with a fancy interface and a crazy ass camera.
To be fair, I think they're both equal in term of perfurmance (Omnia has faster processor while Xperia has larger ram) and the OpenGL in Xperia is already taken by the WVGA screen (while in Omnia it WQVGA with no OpenGL) but it still support DivX.
Omnia outstands the Xperia in the camera, including it's flash (although it's Sony's speciality) and Xperia outstands Omina in the display (monitor).
Xperia UI (Panels) is way better than Omnia's (TouchWiz); they're both handy and finger-friendly but TouchWiz is uncustomizable.
Also, Xperia has a full keyboard and more buttons on the outside while Omnia has G-Sensor (Accelerometer) and less in weight, size and price.
Finally, Xperia is better when it comes to SSD Memory Card (don't have to remove the battery) and Stylus (stuck inside instead of hanging on the side). But with the 8 GB inside Omnia, no one needs SSD Memory Card and the interfaces in both are already finger-freindly so through away your styluses.
Well if we go back to the subject...
I think that the difference in screen resolution is a hard nut to crack when porting all the stuff in Omnia to the X1.

exporting doesn't mean raw exporting; it's more of programming the same concept considering the target PPC. I think it's been made already for QVGA devices.

You're right that they didn't answer your question. However, you have to admit; when you need info from people in the X1 forum it's not smart to start by telling why you feel the Omnia is so much better (We all love the X1 here!), as you'll compel others to start a discussion on it.
About that, I've experienced an Omnia. It's a nice toy, but just that, a toy. The X1 is for serious business.
Having said that, I think it's not that easy to port things like panels to the Omnia. As stated above the Omnia's screen just fails in comparison to the X1. Then there's hardware and driver issues to tackle if you get past resolution. I highly doubt you'll find a coder who's willing to do this for you.
I like the Idea of an Omnia Panel
Generally I am tired of the dicussion between the preferences of Omnia / Touch HD / Xperia and so on but I reallylike the idea to have the different phone software on different panels of my X1. Thats why I decided to contribute to this thread. Of course it is not easy to port the Omnia software to the Xperia because of different screen resulution and acceleromater different drivers etc. but thats the challenge!!!
To start the challengenge I want to post all extracted Omnia apps which can found on the following website:
http://mobile.etechniker.com/
I am no developer but already tried to install different apps but with out success. Installing works very well but when you like to start the following error occurs:
"The file 'Contents Manager' can not be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
Moreover, today plugins and widgets can not be activated after installation. I already tried the new Samsung D3d drivers and Flash lite to install before I start the apps without any success.
Hope there is anybody else interested in porting Omnia apps to the X1 and can help with this issues.

OK If this is the way the thread is about lets delete is from the Xperia Rom section because it does not make any sence to spam rom section. We can start a new thread if anybody is interested in the topic Omnia Panel for X1.

Mobile 6.5 and programs requiring VGA res without WGAFix3 - HOW??????

I really like all these windows mobile 6.5 roms that are popping up for experia, but i cannot justify using one without the ability to use WVGA fix. I use Picodrive and Finalburn along with Tomtom 6 and some other software, none of which work without WVGAFix3 which itsself is said not to work with 6.5.
There must be a load of people now with 6.5 roms, that like this software so how does everybody else do it? Or does everybody really just stop using their favorite software in favor of a 6.5 rom?
I have found nothing in the WVGAFix thread.
C'mon guys.....i cant be the only one faced with this dilemma?
Even if you use WM 6.5 (like me ;-) ) you can use WGAFix3. It doesnt give a black bar after use - but the Apps work after activating WGAFix - and before they didnt worked.
Have fun.

If anyone comes up with anything let me know as well ....
Maybe you should ask in the General section? Surely X2 is not the only WV mobile with WVGA resolution. And tell us if you find anything.
(I don't have my X2 at the moment and my Kaiser has QVGA resolution.)
