Slingplayer freezing and choppy (AT&T Tilt) - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

I'm currently running the stock AT&T Rom (Windows Mobile 6.0) without bloatware on my Tilt. I'm running the newest Slingbox (1.6) for Pocket PC.
I currently have 2 "H" signal where I watch my slingplayer, but either my phone or the signal is screwy.
When watching I will have bursts of good framerate, but constant freezing, and choppy playback.
I've tried all sorts of combinations of settings.
I've tried the slingplayer auto optimization, I've set my bit rate to a variety of amounts, and frame rates, as well as with and without the GDI rendering. I've tried just about every combo of settings in the player. I do know that this is not on the slingbox's end though, as it works great from computers when remote viewing..
I've changed my KaiserTweak settings (such as TCP windows size) but none of those improve it.
I've even set my bitrate to the lowest possible it still freezes off and on. I've gotten to the point where I think it must be the phone that is causing this.
I'm surprised I don't see more people with this issue.
Does anyone have any suggestions that may improve this for me?

what is the lowest bw that slingplayer have? if you are using edge, you'll have to be able to go as low as 40kbps... also, what is your upstream bw limited to? try connecting via wifi & see if you are still having problems.
i use orb to stream my tv tuner & prefer not to waste money on slingplayer...

If you want to see if it's the phone or the signal, plug it into a computer on the network of your SlingBox and use the ActiveSync connection. At least that way, if it works great you know it's a singal/bandwidth issue, and if it's still screwy, you know it's your phone.
Personally, mine ran fine on the AT&T stock Rom for quite a while, and I didn't really notice any issues....but I usually had at least 3 or 4 H bars when I was using it. Right now I'm running a cooked 6.1 rom and it works great on that too, but you should still be able to get decent playback with stock.
Another thing to try (this might sound odd), but try disabling HDSPA. There could be a chance that you actually get better signal with 3G than with H (and 3G is still enough speed for a smooth picture).

Have you tried it on a Wireless LAN? Mine works no problem at all either on 3g or wireless lan.

odd.... I have edge so I dont sling unless I find wifi or travel out of my city to a 3g or better area. But when I was on "H" it was near wifi quality with no hiccups. Try wifi and try ruling out at&t's network.
SlingBox Rules. One of the greatest purchases I've ever made. I like connecting to my friends slingbox in oregon to watch Pac 10 college football games! Go Trojans

Well I connected my phone to my wifi at home (network my box is on) - and it was better, but still not great. Maybe I'm just expecting too much.
Even at home my frame-rate was fairly choppy. I tried Auto optimization, and many variations of bit-rate and other settings (GDI).
Is there any setting in KaiserTweak that may actually slow internet? Such as TCP window size, or resends (Data/Connect)? (Would the GDI/Font Cache help with slingplayer any since it's using GDI rendering?
Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. It may just be this spot were I sit at work has a shakey signal strength or something.
If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know - Thanks.
@Valtamr: I did try disabling H once a few weeks back, and for that day I thought it was better, but later it started acting up again. Do you know why H might sometimes be worse?

I'm not really sure why that could be the case. I just know that in certain places I can get a very different level of signal strength between E and H (E is full strength, but only 2 bars of H), so I thought that could possibly also be the case between H and 3G (maybe you could get 4 bars of 3G where you only could get 2 bars of H). So yeah....I don't have a whole lot of knowledge behind that, but I figured it was an easy enough test to try....just trying to help you troubleshoot.

Have you tried it in non full screen? Full screen I get crappy playback but in non full screen its pretty much perfect.

I'm not surprised by that, when you do that it's a smaller resolution - which uses less bandwidth.
I'll try again next work-week (couldn't test today) to see if any of these suggestions helped. At the point I'm assuming that I have some network issues where I sit.

Well, I did try the suggestions a few weeks back but no change. I still assume where I sit at work has some signal issues.
I did notice however that even at home on my wifi my frame-rate was still choppier than it should have been. This I have attributed to the poor video playback on the Tilt.
In any case, I did discover something helpful here: I updated to the official AT&T 6.1 ROM and noticed a drastic improvement. Although the video playback is not where it should be for the phone, it did improve the Slingplayer quality greatly.
I could instantly notice the video looked smoother and more consistent. I now can go 1-2 hours of slingplaying with only 1 or 2 hiccups, and those have been very minor.
I think my earlier troubles were a mix of the phone performance and the signal. But the 6.1 change has really helped out.
I need to try the HTC CA drivers and see if it helps anymore. I did notice that the Samsung Omnia ones "seemed" to help some (back on 6.0) - but I know it was not supposed to, so maybe I just had a lucky streak of good signal or something.

I am having trouble using Orb on my Tilt. I can watch videos/tv through my wifi but not on the gprs EDGE network. You guys are saying that it's working for you. What am I doing wrong? Every time I click on video or tv channel it opens up WMP and says "paused" then eventually says "The server is busy or is not responding. Try again later." I have tried everything.

Well, I can't speak for Orb.....but yeah, I said streaming video is working for me. What I DIDN'T say is that streaming video is working for me on EDGE. So what are you doing wrong?.....you are trying to get streaming video to work over a connection that is too slow for it. You need to have a decent 3G (preferably HSDPA) connection to be able to use this sort of thing - EDGE simply wasn't made to do what you are trying to do.

I am experiencing the same issue on a brand new Sprint Touch pro with slingplayer 1.6. The phone is an EVDO rev-a device and I still get low framerate, dropping datarate, etc, then sometimes it falls back to the 1x network. I tried wifi connected to a WRT54g and it definitely stabilized but the kbps averaged 245 to 330 at 14 FPS. My Windows xp client averages about 745 kbps on the same internet connection.
I tried it at home where the slingbox truly resides, connected to wifi and there were still low results. I thought for sure it would go over 1000 kbps. There has to be some network throttling going on on Windows Mobile.
Any others out there experiencing this? Any other tweaks that someone else may discovered?

I get the same, tethered to my laptop I get impeccable performance.
The same 3g connection on my tilt stutters on full screen, i generally enable slingstream optimisation and gdi rendering which helps.
There is a new Mobile Client in the pipeline.... although if its a driver issue the tilt is screwed either way, because on my Blue Angel over wifi slingplayer is perfect, as good as a portable tv.
Im assuming its a combination of bad drivers and slingplayer throttling the bandwidth for battery purposes.
Id like to be able to have a slider much like the wifi performance one, because a lot of the time my tilt is externally powered, so power usage is not an issue.

I kinda had this problem when I switched from my 8525 to the tilt, I just switched all the setting back to default and it is pretty much flawless as long as I'm in 3g and also pretty damn good in the edge network as long as I have at least 3 bars. Have you tried reinstalling Slingplayer mobile/ Also make sure you dont have any background application running in your active programs list.

When on wifi my kaiser seems to loose the signal and picks it up again.
its just going on and off.
No problem with the routersignal all wireless computers work fine.
anyone knows about this problem?

Have you put the slider to best performance rather than best battery?
Yes i did
never had the problem with the tytn and wizard.
I only get that on my TyTN II when I'm far away from the router and the signal strength is low. If you've already set the performance vs battery life slider to give maximum performance as suggested by kareem9nba and it's still behaving as reported, what happens when you're near to the router?
If it's just that your saying the range isn't as good as youve been used to with other devices, I have nothing to compare my TyTN II with as this is my first WiFi capable ppc - but I'm sure other more experienced members here will be able to comment. If you're near to the router where there's no doubt it should be working fine and still getting problems then thats a different matter.
maybe your router needs a restart or maybe its just faulty.
have you tried other devices with same router?
try a wifi sniffer/scanner see what happens (a good example would be PeekPocket)

I do! My Kaiser's performance is on a par with my old HTC Universal, which is to say, they are both terrible at getting a signal. I don't think my Kaiser is faulty as back in the Universal forums, it was often commented how useless the WiFi was in comparison to other machines. I used to have a HP Ipaq 5450 which could get a signal upto approx 20m from my router, my laptop starts struggling at around 50m. The Universal could just about get a signal upto 4m away, the Kaiser is no better.
I realise much of this is due router location and the fact that I was trying to get WiFi in my garage, but in my bedroom with a full signal on the laptop, the HTC devices struggle to get more than 1 bar and if I move 10cm further away from the router the signal goes completely.
I think the WiFi on the Universal and the Kaiser just isn't that powerful. I guess it's Maximum Performance setting is still quite low power in order to save battery life. Wonder if there is a registry tweek to increase the power to the WiFi card, and if doing that would blow the card?!

I'm using an 11 Mbps Wifi capable router (about 2003 vintage) and even with a wall and a floor between my TyTN II and the router it still works about 15 m away, I've yet to try any further as that'd be outside the house. I was impressed to see it even detected other WiFi sources in the area though. I found that even though the signal quality bar was fluctuating, my web browsing still worked OK. Bumping the slider towards the performance end did make a difference to the signal quality indicator (although it still fluctuated). If your TyTN II is only working up to 4 m from your router then I think there's a fault with either device, you should be getting better than that.
I can connect to my linksys WRT54G when beside the it and 20mt away. Even when beside it the TynII will cycle off (disconnect) and then reconnect again. I thought it was signal strength but I am beginning to think its just a crappy wifi setup on the tyn. I also have my slider on best performance.

Funny that, so am I! However I bought it because it was cheap and I really didn't know much about WiFi etc several years ago when I bought it. I notice many routers come with external antenna's, mine is all internal so I would think that it's more my router isn't that powerful, combined with the Kaiser having a less powerful WiFi set-up that older models. To be fair, the Ipaq had an external antenna (of sorts, a little lump on top) and my previous laptops didn't have built in WiFi, their external WiFi adaptors also had external antenna's.
Frankly I think that all this internalisation of components is having a negative impact on signal strength and range. To compare I have a GSM car kit with an external antenna that picks up a much better signal than a phone on it's own. Likewise my GPS can be connected to an external antenna and I've noticed when connected it will pick up more satalites, with a stronger lock, than when on it's built in antenna. It also picks up more than the Kaiser (internal antenna) or Universal (external bluetooth GPS with internal antenna) ever do.
Still, it all just about works for my needs, so I'm going to leave well alone!

But does this actually affect your browsing? In the end the signal quality bar can do whatever it wants as long as the data still gets through as far as I'm concerned and for me that’s happening. My hunch is that the reason why the signal quality bar intermittently dips down (even when nearby a router) is associated with power management on the TyTN II (which will still be in place to a certain degree even when the performance vs. battery life slider is fully at the performance end).

really i can't connect to my wifi router, while other hardware can (a laptop for example). it loops from "connecting" to "available" with 5 bars. but nevers connect or never shows an error. i tried open, WEP, WPA, WPA2 with no results... its a compatibility problem of TYTN II with some routers....
i hope that upgrading firmware, this problem dissapear....
Hi
My experience isn't that the signal itself is particlarly poor, but that it can be prone to loose connection regularly if its very weak. Atm I'm sitting some 150m from the accesspoint (quite powerfull transmitter), through a couple of concrete walls and its fast, as in almost so fast as the Kaiser can chew. Livestreaming from Youtube is np etc. The signal is no doubt very poor tho, and I have to use max signal/minimum battery on that bar you can adjust.
What drives me nuts is that it DCs me and often force me to key in the network key randomly every 1 to 20mins or so. I don't know if this is due to weak signal (both my laptop and the kaiser have 1 bar) or config of the wlan/kaiser. The PC dont DC, but its deffo a cranky connection. It almost seems like theres some auto-DC feature somewhere.
On other networks I haven't seen this. Generally I find the Kaiser wlan surprisingly powerfull, albeit it often shows a weak signal I've found this to be very relative and far from always descriptive of real life performance.

kaiser wifi low signal - wi fi poor reception - wifi disconnecting and reconnecting:
Suffered a lot with my kaiser wifi poor reception. Tested several radio versions and could solve the problem.
Radio version:
1 71 09 01 - too low WIFI reception
1.27.12.11 - disconnecting and turning OFF the WIFI with no automatic reengage of the access point or turning ON the WIFI if coverage is good.
1.65.17.56 is the versione that SOLVED my problem.
This radio was collected from the original HTC shipped rom:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe
In this moment I am running Radio 1.65.17.56 with
ROM jjblaster3 - updated 28014 with good WIFI behaviour.
I need to underline that the reception I have now with the Kaiser, can never reach the sensibility of my Nokia 5530 WIFI or the one I have on my laptop with good antenna embeded in my LCD framem but I am happy now because the WIFI is making sense now.
Best Regards

I'm facing the same problem. WiFi worked fine and one day it was suddenly gone. Tried quite a few radios, including 1.65.17.56 and still no deal.
To elaborate, when WiFi is turned on, the icon never even comes up in the taskbar, and it continues to remain in an off state (when checked in wifi settings) even when it's turned on (in the comm manager).
I'm guessing this could be a hardware problem like a loose contact to the antenna? Anyone heard of such issues?
(On a side note, the phone function never worked either, I always got a "No Service")
I've fixed it! I believe the problem was indeed a loose antenna. I opened up my phone and removed the antenna peice (the plastic plate that also houses the speaker) and pushed up the two pins left of the camera (so that they'll have better contact with the antenna piece. Put everything back and now the WiFi works!
Now if only I can figure out why the cellular doesn't work..

AT&T Tilt: Absurdly slow wifi

I'm not quite sure what sort of issue is plaguing me, but I'm experiencing very slow browsing when using my wifi connection. It does not seem to be any sort of network issue, as I have several computers on the wifi that get great connections. I've tried several browsers, including IE, Minimo, Opera Mobile, and Opera Mini. All with similar results: incredibly slow/laggy browsing (speed tests are just painful). What seems peculiar is that sometimes, it will run very fast, then seem to "stick" while loading a page. For example, I might be on cnnmobile, then want to go back to my homepage, google. That can take upwards of 30 seconds at times, or just a couple seconds other times. Another oddity I've noticed is that if a page is "sticking", I can often refresh it and have it load up very quickly.
The potential issue that's been pointed out to me by several people is "proxy". I downloaded and installed a disable hidden proxy program from xda, but it did not seem to resolve the issue. If anyone can help me out here, I'd really appreciate it a lot. Thanks
Is the normal data connection as fast as it should be or is it painfully slow as well?
To be honest, I have noticed slow WiFi too. Its not that much faster than my 3G connection (700kbps). For example, I just ran a mobile speed test from DSL reports through the Tilt's WiFi, and I got 1068 kbps with a ping of 213 ms. Compare that to a similar test on my desktop that got 4086 kbps with a ping of 36 ms. I really don't understand what's going on with the Tilt's WiFi. I mean, sure its better than 3G, no doubt, but come on. A ping of 213 ms when the access point is less than 10 feet away and the internet connection is wired! I know my laptop can fare better than that over wireless.
Is anyone else seeing numbers like these? Maybe its the encryption? Although, I am only running WEP on the router, because I want my DS to be able to connect with it.
EDIT: Well, I don't think its that. I tried disabling WEP on my router to see if it would speed things up. I got 1195 kbps and a ping of 226 ms. I guess that means there is a bit more downstream, but I would take these results with a grain of salt, because I still feel like the numbers are too close to call. Besides, the ping wasn't any better.
Oh, and just in case anyone is wondering, I am running the TCP/IP tweaks from KaiserTweak and I ran the tests with the phone disabled just to be sure.
You might want to try this....
-click start
-click settings
-select the connections tab on the bottom of the screen
-select the Wireless LAN icon
-select the Power Mode tab on the bottom
-slide the bar to "Best Performance"

Slingplayer Issues?

Does anyone else out there have Slingplayer installed on their Captivate? They don't offer any trial version so I shelled out $30 for this piece of software and I can't get it to work. It works fine over WiFi at home, but it won't work right over 3G. I originally posted this issue in the Slingbox forums but I thought I'd repost here since XDA members tend to actually know something about cell phones/technology.
Here is my original post on Slingbox forums: http://answers.slingbox.com/message/13962#13962
Here is the issue:
When I try to play video over 3G it stops after a second or two and plays choppy after that (and I don't mean a little choppy, I mean like audio will come back for a second every minute or two). It used to work fine on my old phones but just to test it, I put my sim card back in my old Tilt 2 and tried out SlingPlayer. I was able to get a steady stream with decent quality and no cut outs. I also went to mobilespeedtest.com and did a 2MB test with my Tilt 2 and got around 1300KBPS. Then, I put the sim back in my Captivate and tried to watch from the exact same spot. It played for the first 2 seconds then the video stopped. The menus still worked so the program wasn't hung or anything, the stream just stopped coming in. I then exited SlingPlayer and loaded up mobilespeedtest.com on my Captivate. On the 2MB test, I got aprox 3500KBPS. Almost 3 times the bandwidth of my Tilt 2 and I coudln't watch the stream at all.
Since the video worked on my Tilt 2, it can't be an issue with my slingbox and router setup at home. Also, my Captivate gets faster download speeds so it can't be an issue related to bandwidth.
It works fine over WiFi when I'm at home, but it refuses to work over 3G. I also got poor results over WiFi from a location outside my home. Seems like it has trouble with going to an external IP address? Again, my slingbox works fine on my other phone and on computers that are outside my network so it can't be a slingbox/router configuration issue. The only device with trouble is the Captivate. Since the slingplayer mobile software got 4.5 stars in the marketplace, I'd imagine its working good on other phones and the issue is with the Captivate/Galaxy S phones. Thoughts?
I have sling player on my captivate and it streams fine over the 3g network. Sometimes it does cut out but thats only when I have really crappy 3g coverage. I wish I had some advice for ya, but I just wanted to write and let you know that it's working great for me over 3g. So the program does work on the captivate without issues. I'm wondering what the issue could be.
Thanks for your reply. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Slingplayer. It still gives me trouble over 3g, regardless of signal strength. Basically, when I turn on SlingPlayer it will stream just fine if I have good 3g signal. But once I change channels, it looses the video stream. I can still hear the audio, but the video freezes and won't comeback until I disconnect and reconnect. Are you able to change channels without issue?
i have sling player working fine on my euro i9000 and it works fine over 3g as long as you have good signal.. i have a feeling that yours is not working well because of at&t limiting the 3g upload speed which also affects downlolad..

I have it as well.. I have AT&T and zero issues with 3g or wifi... works great.. sometimes it chops up when i first start it but for like 3 seconds then fine.
I also have the Slinglayer working without a problem.

[Q] HD7 Data Connection Issues (T-Mobile USA)

Has anyone else had trouble with loading web pages occassionally on T-Mobile's data connection?
Every once in awhile, web pages simply won't load, and I get the "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. It seems like I have to close all my tabs and then open a page to get it working again. This "glitch" or whatever it is, doesn't happen on WiFi, but has happened numerous times on the data connection.
Is this happening to anyone else??? It's like T-Mobile is trying to throttle the connection or something... I haven't used THAT much data

I have noticed this too, but when I look I usually have dropped to Edge from 3G. I think it has more to do with the 3G signal than the device itself. Possibly issues with your location the construction of the building you are in overhead fluorescent light, all of those might factor into the dropping signal. Just a theory.
I was pulling some CRAZY download speeds on mobile speed test website.
I was actually getting 25 Mb down consistently... With a 7 Mb sample size and about 5 different tests on 3G! The phone was blazing fast at the time too.
When I got home on wifi my speeds were back to normal - around 9 Mb.
I wonder if they were doing some network upgrades in Princeton NJ today?
Pretty crazy, and while it may have been the speed test was whacky, I really don't think it could've have been wrong on that many separate tests.
Anyway, that's my input. I think data has been good.

Yea, speed is no issue. I get 9 or 10 Mbps download speeds regularly. The problem is as I described, once in a while pages simply refuse to load, and I basically have to restart the browser. You have never experienced that? Thanks to the other user for your feedback, that might be true about it switching from 3G to Edge, I'll try to pay attention to that the next time it happens.
yeah, i got the issue you mentioned earlier this afternoon. hitting the refresh button doesn't seem to help either.
On several occasions, I've struggled to get a decent data connection, despite there being an apparent signal. Turning the data off and back on again in settings->mobile network has fixed it, but it is frustrating.

Yep. well it's good to know that others are experiencing it. I don't believe it is a problem with T-Mobile's network, since my old WinMo phone worked just fine. I wonder if people on ATT have this issue, cause I would say it is something that needs to be fixed in Windows Phone in general. I'll post the question in their Samsung Focus forums.
I usually do not have any problems with the data on my device.
But one thing I have noticed that is happening frequently on my phone was... It gets stuck in 'G' (which I think is GPRS, worst than Edge). After a bit of analysis, I have realized, that when I get into and out of a tunnel (I take a subway to work), at times, my device does not get the 3G and stuck in G.
But once I reboot the phone, I am back to full signal.
Again, this DOES NOT always happen. Only once in a while.
On the whole I am actually VERY HAPPY with the data speeds. I was actually amazed to see how Netflix app was streaming movies seamlessly on my device with out any hiccups even while passing through areas where the coverage fluctuates from 3G to Edge and back.

hi all, I have the following problem: buy a t-mobile hd7 released, I need to manually configure the 3G connection and I have that option. I live in Argentina and so far with my previous phones had no problems (hd2 htc, htc desire, xperia x10) thanks
I have noticed this issue too and I don't think it's t-mobile but on a positive note the web pages load up very fast.

[Q] Wired Tether Connectivity

So I have a quick question about wired tether. For those of you that use it, does yours keep a steady download rate? Mine fluctuates anywhere from 15kb up to 1.0mb but doesnt stay at one speed consistently. I dont have cable so I watch alot of hulu videos but the fluctuation causes it to stop the video randomly. I have full bars of signal so I dont see why it cant keep a constant speed. Any advice would be appreciated.
Edit: Now im noticing that it completely drops the speed to zero and then back up. This is happening at the same time to the upload speed.

Does your PC have a wireless card? If so, get Wireless Tether, I use it and it works great for me. I haven't tried streaming any movies while using it, but I would imagine it would be good. You could also try PdaNet. I think the latter is slower, but I just use my regular internet when I'm at home. Hope this helps

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I have found that wireless tether seems to run slower than the wired tether. I think it may be rom related cause it works better on some roms then others.

I use wired tether everyday, for both it's speed and the fact it doesnt turn my phone into a small battery powered heater like wifi tether does. I have noticed fluctuations in download rates, and it seems to occur more often with streaming than it does with a straight download. It is somewhat normal for a phone's signal to fluctuate some even if you have full signal bars. When I watch youtube or hulu I simply turn the quality down. It caches faster this way and thus is not as affected by the drops in speed.
