Diamond novice needs your help... PLS!!! - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

After having a Touch a few months back, i thought the Diamond would be a breeze. NO such luck in my experience.
For example. On the main home screen. How do you edit that so it's just the clock or, to add more to the list that currently shows calendar and call history? I can't find any way to do this so if you can enlighten me, i'd really appreciate it.
What about when texting? Is there any way to make the keypad a different size? Personally i can't find a way to edit that. It's annoying that after adding your contacts name, you seemingly have 90% of the screen filled with the entry system and you have to mess about to get to the message section of the screen. Guessing i've missed something somewhere!
Zooming in on a photo... how is that done? Orange's CD ROM User Manual is vague to say the least so if you can assist here to, please do.
This thread could become a handy hints and tips chart for beginners if all feedback is good so if you have a question or some simple advice for settings and the way to go around things, chuck a note in and someone will be very happy to see the reply

1) Well if u flick ur finger in an upward motion on the home screen u'll notice the clock becoming smaller and will list all the list all ur appointments from ur calendar...
2) If u are not satisfied in the HTC Keyboard, u will need to look into other keyboards my fav personally is Touchpal from Cootek and there is even resco keyboard which is pretty gud.
3) You can only zoom in a picture when u r in the HTC Album, in order to zoom you will need to rotate your finger clockwise or anti-clockwise i am always forget which is for zooming so u will need chk tht out...
I hope these tips helps u out....

Hmmmmmm, i see. Shame that somehow we can't take the good things from the Touch like the Home screen as standard and have them in the 3D instead. If any cab compilers are reading this, maybe it's something that could be done?
Along those lines, maybe someone could rip out the original texting keyboard, the smaller more compact one... better for stylus use and enables you to see more screen. I HATE the big finger pad they've put on the Diamond. Is is really necessary to have it that big? Surely if you're going to use the stylus (i mean if HTC didn't want us to use one, then ALL the functions and menus would be larger, yes?), then why provide us with one in the first place?!?!!

There are multiple SIPs already built into the Diamond. Holding your finger or stylus on the small arrow next to the keypad button when input is allowed will display the menu, from there you can select the Windows SIP which is tiny and stylus friendly...
Reading the manual is a good idea before posting dude. Or even a search

Well thanks for that reply. I'll have a mess about with that one.
That took no time at all. NO WINDOWS SIP on my handset. All i have are the following... BLOCK, COMPACT, FULL, KEYBOARD, LETTER, PHONEPAD and TRANSCRIBER *sigh*
What bloody version have you got?!?!!
Oh and for the record Mr Read-The-Text-Provided (lol)... did i not say this? ---> Orange's CD ROM User Manual is vague to say the least so if you can assist here to, please do.
Hmmmmm, i think i did!
Ok... answer this one then. Every other HTC phone i have had has done this but not on the Diamond. When you receive a simple thing like an mms or a text, the screen lights to give a clue in case you never heard the message laert. How you you activate THAT cus i'm not seeing how it'ds done anywhere.
Clues please?

I agree - the 'manual/instructions' Orange sent were non-existent and as a first time PPC user I was totally lost until I had a nosey around here and to be fair am still learning all what this phone can do!

HTC want a good kicking if you ask me. The thing as I see it is this. If they'd have kept the basics as it was on the Kaiser (Tytn II) and THEN added the 3D, all would have been superb.

TouchFlo - Am I missing something?

I may be being totally daft, but I can't seem to find anywhere in the interface that has the supposed TouchFlo features. The contact app seems to be just the regular WM6 one.
Can someone please give me an example of where the TouchFlo features are used on the Kaiser?
It's pretty subtle, if you are in a long document, say contacts, you can touch the screen downward in a sweeping motion and the contacts should scroll down continuously. You should hear clicking like a roulette wheel, slowing down till it stops. (You can disable that sound). This works vertical and horizontal (if there is reason to scroll).
It's pretty subtle. Some have complained that it doesn't work well with IE and have loaded Opera-Mini to get that functionality to work better. I've tried both and they seem to work OK for me.
It's not very well implemented.
This is the difference between actually creating something useful and adding a feature just to have it on a checklist ("can scroll using flick like iphone") !
Thanks for the replies, I finally get it. It's pretty lame as-is, I really hope someone will manage to extend the functionality in a custom rom in the future.

It is not that lame, in my opinion. actually, it is rather more useful than the whole cube-thing implemented on the Touch. ie, if your in the car and try to get to a certain contact or scroll a word doc, it is a lot easier to just touch the screen with your finger rather than use the stylus to scroll using the scroll bars.
i like this feature and i dont consider it as a just-to-be-there feature.
I'm pretty sure my palm pda/phone from 5 years ago had Touch Flo

Improved Usability
Drag the stylus anywhere on screen to scroll a web page. Increase viewable content on the screen with the small font option. Get essential starting tips through the Help menu.
Isn't that what TouchFlo does ?

imagine a piece of paper that you could only see though a small hole (screensize). if you pressed your finger down on the paper, and slide it toward you (down), the text on that paper would appear to scroll up, and vice versa...
by the time someone finds the reg tweak, we'll all probably be used to it...

TouchFlo=Iphone WannaBe Marketing Trick
Someone else said earlier and they were dead on: all these top of the line pocket pc /cell phone makers got blind sided by Apple's touch screen, which basically makes the Iphone.
So a smart alec at HTC said "let's whip out a touch flo phone, out comes the HTC Touch, and now let's plaster touch technology everywhere on each model as a marketing gimmick to keep up with the Jones' "
I mean 1 million Iphones sold since June 29th as of today...what choice did they have?
The reslut: Touch Flo technology a la cheap, not using the right screen (Iphone screens cost up the wazoo and are made by Balda of Germany) and is basically no different than the D pad...so NO, HTC phones do not have ANY touch tech. yet.

For me it is. especially if it is in internet explorer, where the scroll wheel jumps from link to link, while the touchflo scrolls pages. i know we can modify the scroll wheel behaviour to scroll pages as well, but as it came from the factory this is the behaviour.
plus, if u are driving, it is easier to just touch the display once rather than keep your finger pressed on the d-button or on the wheel.

Comm Mgr Customizing

Is there a way to customize comm manager (change from 6 button to 10 or change the buttons--replace data connection with 3G) other than using Advanced Config. I can do it through Advanced Config but wondered whether there was another way to do it on the fly that I am missing. Thx.
Did you try looking into the stickied thread at the top of the forum that has all the cab files??
There's a 10 buttom comm manager right there.
I know. I am looking for a utility that switches from the 10 to the 6 or changes the order of the buttons on the 10 or 6. Maybe I am not explaining it well enough ....
Why would you want to change between the two? The 10 button has it all, including disabling data connection and 3G?
Aesthetics. The 6 button on/off looks good with certain themes/roms. Not a huge issue. I guess not a big demand for it.
If you use Kaiser Tweak you can customize the Comm Manager (doesn't change from 6 to 10 buttons or vice versa) but you can re-order the buttons. Give it a shot.
Got it. Thanks.
... Is there anyone that found a way to make the 10-buttons CommManager "dpad-friendly" ?
It's so annoying : you can navigate the homepage of your PDA with the dpad, and then start the commmanager... and there : you're stuck !
Have to touch the screen to choose any of the items (wireless, data, bluetooth...)

Yeah, because it's SUCH a pain to point your finger at the screen and push.
Wow, it's amazing the things people complain about.
If I took your logic, I would ask why Kaiser has a hard-keyboard ? It's so easy for ppl to press the screen
...
I have the aluminum case, and the screen is behind a hardglass !
So you can give a try if you want... but I'd bet your won't even bend the glass.
You didn't say you had a hard case, did ya? I don't have one and I don't know anyone that does. Everyone I know uses the stylus on the screen, just like it's supposed to be used.
Just use AEB to assign a hardkey, I use the windoz logo key, double press toggles BT power, tripple toggles WiFi. You get the picture.
I'll give a try to AEB (my Win button is already reassigned, same for the camera button which triggers the CommMgr...)

Like I said, why would people buy a phone with real keyboard, as there's already onscreen keyboard... That's exactly same scenario.
My question was not about "how could I reeducate myself", but how to turn this smartphone into something even smarter...
Even the ComMgr on the HTC Tornado can be manager from the joystick... (running WM5)
So it's a shame if HTC did remove this so simple thing as focus-ordered buttons...

You bought it, didn't you? Why did you buy it? I'll tell you why - it's one thing to have an on screen keyboard, it's a totally different thing to have a real, tactile keyboard with real keys to give your fingers feedback. You're comparing apples and oranges. Your logic doesn't fly with me, sorry. You can't touch-type with an on screen keyboard (i.e. type by feel).

LOL. Thanks for the laugh. You made my night.
The OP had a question, and I answered it. If it's not what he was looking for, then he should learn how to phrase his questions in a better way.
I don't apologize for my wording. I am short and to the point.
Lastly, some people will complain about anything and everything. You can't help that or change that.
Ok fine, so you're apparently upset about people asking for tips & tricks... Then I assume your Kaiser was just perfect as-is right ?
(...so I guess you kept the stock ROM untouched, and didnt apply any of the great XDA-dev patches/fixes then)
Anyone with a more constructive feedback, like maybe importing the CommMgr of a different HTC pdaphone ?
I have the Tilt with the stock AT&T ROM. It does everything I need it to. I have, however, applied many of the tweaks and fixes available here. I ask very few questions and do LOTS of reading. I read almost every thread in this forum looking for little tweaks to make my phone even better than it already is.
I have no problems with people asking questions. That is what this forum is for. What bugs me is people who post the same question over and over without reading ANYTHING. (not that I was referring to you)
I was trying to be a little sarcastic with my first reply, but I guess you took it the wrong way.
So then, if you said I was posting without reading anything ...
Do you mean you were able to find a way ? (finaly we'll get something constructive)
I am not really new to XDA-dev, so I know how searching the place works...
Unfortunately, neither the 6buttons nor the 10buttons CommMgr is able to do (apparently) what I'm trying to get.
Hence the post...
Well I highly doubt that you will be able to switch between the 6 and 10 buttom comm mgr. They are both cab installs and require a SR after install.
What about RemE's suggestion? Did you try that? You could also remap the PTT button.
P.S. I wasn't referring to you when I said people don't read before posting.

New to the tilt and forum

A few questions and do not laugh.
Is the kaiser and the tilt the same thing?
Can I put the touchflo software in my tilt? If YES, there are about 459 threads about the touchflo. Which is the one I should go to with the software and installing info?
I have issues with the response speed of the touch screen. Can it be resolved? Sometime I have to tap multiple times to have a response
About the kaisertweak. Is that ok for the tilt ? Should I install it?
Thanks for all your help and remember... patience is a virtue.

The Tilt comes with Touch-flo installed from AT&T. I didn't have to do anything to my Tilt and all that had to happen was one person showed me touch-flo on their Tilt. I tried it and it worked immediately. I didn't change any settings or install anything extra. Give it a try. Open your contacts list and quickly slide your finger from the bottom to the top of the screen with a light touch. Once you get the hang of it you can have it spinning like the big wheel on the price is right... except here you just tap the screen to stop it where you want it.

In my opinion, after installing Kaiser Tweaks, scrolling worked MUCH better. There are 2 settings in Kaiser Tweaks which affect scrolling, sensitivity and finger pressure.

Yes, there are setings to "tweak" it, but I found that the default was the lightest touch. I tried the "advised" settings in Kaiser Tweak and I couldn't get that thing to spin to save my life. Every time I tried I had to push the screen so hard that often times one of my contacts opened instead. I ended up putting it back on the default settings.

It's funny, I have the exact opposite experience. Right now I have 2 Tilt's in front of me. I had to order a replacement, and still have both.
The new one (untweaked) is almost impossible to scroll. The tweaked one is very easy to scroll.
I have Kaiser Tweaks set to normal on sensitivity, and very high on finger pressure.

Hope I'm missing somthing here...

...but can you really not simply call someone who has just texted without having to revert to pen and paper???
TIA
Sure, just press the Phone button.
That certainly doesn't work on my phone (standard UK 1.37.405.1 WWE).
When I hit the phone button, all I get is the keypad, with the last event in the call history highlighted.
I have to say, I've tried all ways I can think of with this issue, and I'm amazed something so fundamental appears to be missing. I can't remember how many times I got texts on my old phone only to decide the answer was too complex to text and decided a phone call was more appropriate. On my old phone I just cut the sender from the text and pasted it on the dialer, and that was a 'simple' Samsung D900... so what's going on with the Diamond I need to start carrying a paper and pen.
Please someone tell me I'm missing something, or that there's a trick other than having to temporarily enter them in my contacts or need to start exercising my extremely short term memory?
Hi,
If you open all messages and hit the call button, verify the number and call.
Works on my UK Diamond.
Ok.....
Seriously....?
Why did you buy the phone in the 1st place?
Cos it was "Pretty"?
If you go to your inbox, showing all your text messages, select the conversation between you and the person you want to call.
Then use the directional pad to select their part of the conversation (you will know this because their text message and name will be highlighted - might be highlighted blue, it is on mine...) then simply press the call key, (very bottom left of the handset).
You don't have to press any other other buttons.
It will ask you to confirm before it actually dials.
Didn't your phone come with a user manual? - I'll explain how that works.... you pick it up and page through it using your hands, it also comes with extra features such as an index at the back and a table of contents at the front.......
........Or is it like anyone who owns a BMW or Mercedes who was supplied with one that didn't come with indicators!

Didn't your phone come with a user manual? - I'll explain how that works.... you pick it up and page through it using your hands

Hey Studz, no probs man.
Glad this thread didn't become ugly.
I guess for the guys who are developing ROMS and stuff, questions from newbies can be a pain in the ass. Perhaps there should be a section for "I'm sorry, I know I should be able to work this out, but I've tried for 3 days and can't :eek"
I'd probably fill it!!

touch friendly rom

Ive tried many roms cooked by you guys and cannot seem to find what i want. simply put i want to know if there has or is a plan to develop a rom more designed for fingers and not styluses? i like having the option of an onscreen keyboard but my fingers disagree with it.

Yep
Finger friendly ROM? Your more likely to find Finger Freindly GUI's, take a look around @ what you can use GUI or even Today Plugins depending on what sort of setup you want?
M2D is Finger Freindly for me...
Re: Keyboards plenty of Finger Freindly Keyboards, i use TouchPal not amazing with fingers but makes stylus use more bearable and has loadz of options.....
A good look in Dev section and Google is your friend "will help loadz"

That cab is a bigger keyboard, more user friendly...

Actually, this brings up a question I've pondered and have somewhat answered which is "how 'finger-friendly' can a kaiser even be?" The touchscreen itself is designed for the stylus, unlike the iPhone which works best when touched by the pad of a finger and won't even acknowledge when I've inadvertantly used my stylus.
Basically, the kaiser is designed to work with the pinpoint touch of the stylus and can't truly be "finger friendly", right?
i would have to disagree oscar, if you want to make the kaiser more touch friendly, all you simply have to do is make larger icons, most of the new roms use the larger icons and are real touch friendly(ive gone without using my stylus for almost a week now).
the only thing which can really make kaiser not touch friendly is the size of the screen and number of pixels(you need more precision bcuz of this). Because the screen is so small, you cant really fit a lot on there, so to make it more touch friendly you can either make the icons larger and change the name of the phone from HTC TILT to HTC SCROLL(get it, lol, rofl, roflcopter, lmao, roflmao,)
or
i cant remember what i was gonna type, i will add something there when i remember.
man HTC SCROLL............lol, still laughing

the reality is the screen on the kaiser isn't as responsive as other more advanced phones out there, so even you make the icons bigger, there's still a chance that the device won't register the press exactly where you want it to. I've tried all the SIP's out there and I must say, the kaiser just isn't meant for typing onscreen without a stylus. it took me 2 and sometimes 3 times as long to type a text message with the SIP than with the hardware keyboard.
yes, you can make the kaiser 'finger-friendly' by making the icons bigger and adding the large start menus and all that, but the fact of the matter is, the phone was designed during the time when microsoft didn't understand that people didn't like using styli

Now THAT made me laugh even more than the HTC SCROLL (which was already fun). I agree with your general point, though.

You may be right there; especially typing is not very easy on the soft keyboard. However, I have never tried it on an #-Phone (I'm sorry, I was taught not to use swear words): I suspect that even the #-Phone's soft keyboard is much worse than a hardware keyboard.
Apart from typing text, my experiences with using the Kaiser without stylus are quite good. It greatly depends on what programs you use. Many, including the stock ones, have unresponsive buttons, like the phone dialer. However, I use Resco Contact Manager, which has a dialer without any delays, wonderful. Some SIPs have no delays either.
Oh, and I always set the screen to more responsive in the registry, that makes a huge difference.
