Which folder is 4MB storage? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

When I go to Active Sync and click Explore, I get a folder view that confuses me! There is no C: drive and I know there is two types of storage on my HTC Touch Diamond.
What is the My Windows Mobile-Based Device folder? If I double click that, I can see a list of folders, one of which says Internal Storage. Is that the 4MB of memory that the Diamond has? Or am I confused!
Thanks,
Jon

There is no 4MB memory but the internal memory is 4GB.

Yes, Internal Storage has 4GB

So does that mean the forlder called Internal Storage is the 4GB of internal memory?

Yes .

Remember that the folder is invisible while the Diamond is connected to the PC.

Thanks guys!

Only when connecting your phone as a disk drive. In active sync it remains visible.

I notice that a system file for a program has this:
[folders]
app="%SDCARD%/program"
If I want to store it in the internal storage folder, what do I change the %SDCARD% to?

Iternal storage, but it is language sensitive, so you use the name displayed in the TD file manager.

if it's for iGO8 you don't need to do it just get the 8.0.0.44366 update and install
easiest way to determine which folder it is is to unplug the diamond and go to file explorer to rood folder
you will see a small sd card sign by the name of the folder, and that's the one, doesn't matter in which language, icon is the same

So %SDCARD% doesn't automatically look for any SD card on your device?

why i cant send files to my tytn2

hi guys...i am new here, and new to my kaiser too....
well, i try to copy some videos to it from my pc, some 300mb video file
however, when i try to send it using active sync, it just say not enough space and cant sent
i got a 2gb memory card, and i hardly use it (just use like less then 10mb)
so i am guessing does it send to the kaiser internal phone memory? or what?
anyone can help ?
if you are copying it over through file explorer, make sure you select a directory on the storage card to copy it over to (Mobile Device -> My Windows Mobile Device -> Storage card), and not to the default directory as that is your "my documents" directory on the PDA's main memory.

Storage card on my Tilt

You can't save files to the phone with ActiveSync. If you want to save it directly to the card use a reader or a utility like WM5torage.
You can, if..
[END STUPID ANSWER]
You can, if you take the storage card out of the phone, put it in a card reader and plug that into your computer.. Then it should recognize as a mass-storage device and you can save directly to it!

Not flaming, just being silly. The last poster answered your question.
Thanks guy for the Help, i just need to change my way of thinking.
Actually you can do it directly through the phone. The trick is to copy and paste the files in instead of dragging and dropping. It works fine for me.

Yep, I second that - I'm using XP (dunno if it's different in Vista?) but you should have a 'Mobile Device' under the 'Other' category in Windows Explorer?
Just open this up like any other drive, you will see your My Documents folder in your system memory, double click on 'My Windows Mobile Based Device' to get to your phone's system memory root, you should then see a 'Storage Card' folder which you can then copy and paste to / from just as you would with any other folder...

how can i free more sapce from program memory?

Hi All,
how can i move things from program memory to storage memory?
Thanks, Lior.
Do you mean just transfering files from phone memory to your storage card or moving progams?
yes, just transfering files from phone memory to your storage card and also moving progams
For the regular file transfer just sync your phone to your computer. Click the explore icon in the upper right corner on the activesync. Click the my windows mobile device. Then open the file that has your backup files copy them to the storage card folder, and delete them off the device. That is how I do it some one might know an easier way.
As for Programs I had to reinstall and have them instal to the card.
Hope this helps.
My problem is not the storage free space on my phone. the problem is that when i open some software after a soft reset i got a message that saying "you don't have enough memory to run this application" i need to release 15mb and i don't know how to do this, i've tried few software but it still a problem now i have 8mb free.
please help me!
Thanks, Lior.

Sometime when u booted up, your external card wasn't mounted. I can't find a solution other then performing a reboot.
Check under Settings -> SD card & phone storage, if your external card is available or unavailable.
It´s available 14,83 GB free ! Should the music files stores under music folder or just under external mem ? Must i transfer the files with LG suite IV or just drag/drop to external mem ?

Hmm it shouldn't matter where actually but I don't use Stock Music app so cannot confirm. I use PowerAMP. - my music files in ext sdcard.
If I remember correctly, I believe the stock music player only looks in the SD/media folder and all subfolders contained within. Can you locate the files using a file explorer program to verify they transfered correctly?
I think it doesn't matter which folder it is in. I have all my songs in a folder which I named "My Songs". And there's some more nested folders further down. They all gets recognised without any intervention from me. But the first scan took quite some time. Subsequent scans take only a couple of seconds.
Two ways media scanner will skip your folders.......
1. When your files in folder with folder name starting with "."
example, /.music <----- this folder will be skipped from scanning
2. When you have a ".nomedia" file inside a folder
I have solved it, thanks ! I am a noob, find out that _externalSD is not the real externalSD it is still on the phone, at last i find the 16gb external memory !!

[Q] How to View SD Card Content from Vivid?

How does one view the content of the SD Card from the Vivid device itself?
I can connect the Vivid to my PC via USB cable and view the SD Card as a separate drive on the PC, but cannot see how to view the SD Card content from within the device.
Suggestions? TIA.
Get a file explorer app from the marketplace. Try Astro.

First, you need to get a file manager application from the market. There are many of them, mostly free or low cost. I'm not crazy about Astro, the one I downloaded, but it works. Look at some others.
On my Vivid in the root directory is a folder called sdcard. That is the 8.83 GB user portion internal memory portion of the "16 GB" internal memory. Also, I have a folder called sdcard2. It's the 32 GB micro SD card I installed.
Interestingly, there is also a folder in the root directory called mnt. Under it is a folder called sdcard. It is the same as the sdcard under the root directory. Under mnt/sdcard is ext_sd. That is the 32 GB external SD card. I don't know if this duplicate listing is the work of the file manager app, or if it is the Android OS, but I am able to find files and copy files from one place to another.
With me making no changes for applications and data during application installations (I'm not sure I can), all of the apps I have installed have gone into the other portion of internal memory. The data seems to be going into the user portion of internal memory. When I installed the external SD card, I copied music files to it from my PC. The music player found them with no problem. Also, once the card was installed, photos I took were placed on the external SD card instead of internal memory.

How does one access the root directory? Is that what the file manager app does?
(New to Android, and still in the learning phase.)

Don't feel alone. I just came from several years on the old Windows Mobile. In the file manager, I click on the Up icon until it won't go any further. You will see only a '/' in the address/location bar near the top. You will likely see folders such as acct, app-cache, config, sys, sysytem, etc., as well as mnt, sdcard and sdcard2. Tap on the sdcard2 folder icon, and you will see any folders you have on your external SD card.
In Astro, you can specifiy where the program opens when it starts. It can be the root directry, the exteranl SD card or any other location.
By the way, the other poster likes Astro. It comes with other tools. The "free" version has ads, but it might have a paid version. And it does come with an Exit button, something missing from a lot of Android apps.

/sdcard is a symlink to /mnt/sdcard/ its the same thing, just a 'shortcut' to the actual mounted partition located in /mnt
/sdcard2 is a symlink to /mnt/ext_sd/ same thing, just a 'shortcut'
the actual ROOT system is inaccessible unless you have root access and an app that can see it, like root explorer, or es file manager. there are probably a few others that can get into the actual root of the filesystem.

Thanks for the explanation. What I meant by "root" was the top level of the file system, e.g. C:\ on a Windows PC. "Root" apparently has a different meaning in the Android OS.
ES File Manager was the other highly rated file manager, along with Astro when I searched for "file manager" in the Market.

root in linux and subsequently, android, has an entirely different meaning.
in a sense, you have it right. / in linux/android is the root of the filesystem, equivalent to C:\ in windows pcs.
without having root (superuser access) on linux/android, you cant see the / or most of the directories below it. the general user only has direct access to storage, like /sdcard, /sdcard2 (also referred to as ext_sd, or sd_ext)

the phone is marketed as having 16gb of onboard storage, but in reality, 1gb is dedicated to the ROM, aka /system
4gb is dedicated to /data which handles app installs and the like.
the remaining is storage for you to use.
be lucky you have all that. my other HTC phones all just had a mere 2gb or 4gb TOTAL storage (all allocated to /system and /data), which required you to have an SDCard just to be able to take pics or put music/movies/ringtones on it....

Wow! Yeah I figured at least a Gig for the Rom. The rest is pretty nuts though, any way we can see a detailed breakdown on our phone? Didn't expect it to be so much.
Can we install apps on the sd card, like some WM apps?
