how to install applications? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

hi guys, im new here and got my diamond just yesterday.. its my first pocket pc, and i need real help..
looked around the forums and found a lot of good stuff..
downloaded a couple of applications like advanced configuration tools, gsen, registery editor, but i dont know how to install them. when i unzip the files on my pc the are in xml format and when i double click on the setup file it opens in notepad..
plz help me, what should i do? how do i install these applications?

Instead of unzipping the .cab files on your pc, you need to copy them to your diamond (using activesync or select 'disk drive' when you plug it in).
Then open file explorer on your diamond, navigate to where you copied the .cab file, and run it - .cab is an installer file for windows mobile applications

Do the following, hehe
When you download most programs they will be in .CAB format. Now all this means is that they can be installed DIRECT from the phone.
What I do is create a folder on my Diamond in Internal Storage called APPS and make sure my Diamond is synced to my pc / laptop using Activesync on XP or Windows Mobile Device centre if on Vista and then copy all the .CABS that i have downloaded into the APPS folder on my phone.
Once im ready to install the applications its very simple.
On your Diamond click on START and then PROGRAMS and locate FILE EXPLORER.
When FILE EXPLORER has loaded up in the top left of the window you will notice a memory card icon with the current directory you mobile is pointing to, push this and you will then see MY DEVICE and the location you are currently at.
If you have used a pc before its very similar to how the pc windows explorer used to navigate, anyway, select MY DEVICE and then choose INTERNAL STORAGE and then APPS.
Then its just a matter of selecting which application you wish to install as all the .CABS will be displayed. Select the one you want to install and follow the installation process.
If there are any small programs 1mb or less then I tend to install these onto my phone storage memory and for games I install them onto INTERNAL STORAGE but its up to you. Some programs require a SOFT RESET to work.
The SOFT RESET button is located where the STYLUS is stored on the phone, pull the STYLUS out and then you will see a RED BUTTON inside.
Push this and your phone will restart.
There is more information here at good ol xda-developers.com and also http://modmydiamond.info
Hope this helps!

how can I extract .cab file from a windows install

For a lot of program's i don't need a desktop to setup my PDA. But some programs like .net from microsoft, oziexplorer, citrix, resco-fileexplorer can only be installed from a windows-PC.
is there a way to extract or keep-from-a-temporary-space the .cab file that must be somewhere during the install.
wouldn't it be nice to totally rebuild your system with one button after flashing/testing a new ROM or after a empty-battery situation on holiday.
Strangely enough, this is exactly what I do. I stick to cab downloads where possible (keeping them on the SD) but there are ways to extract the cabs from the installer where there isn't one available. Theres a couple of ways you can:
1. Sometimes the installler is built on a zip and you can just open the exe in winzip. If you have winzip shell extensions installed you get an "open in winzip" option on the right-click menu.
2. If that doesn't work, run up the installer and proceed the the part where it copies it to the phone. There are two places you can find the cab. The first is on your PC in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\. Sort by date to find the most recent file. The other place is on the phone itself...the installer actually copies the cab to the phone the installs it. I think you can find the cab in \Windows\AppMgr but it's been a while and that may be wrong.
some apps will put their cab on m$ activesync dir.
have u try sprite backup to backup ur system including storage.
Guy's,
thanks for your info. Got it complete in cab files on my storagecard now. Some i found in programfiles/activesync on the desktop. Sometimes it wasn't clear which cab file to use, so i started the install from the desktop. Then on the PDA when the question comes about where to install, then i started fileexplorer to see where the temporary cab file is. They all where in windows/appmgr/install.
thx,

N00B Question ... but not covered, even in the Tilt FAQ

Can someone please answer the most basic of N00B questions ...
1) How do I install .EXE files onto the Tilt
2) How do I install .CAB files onto the Tilt
Specifically, with # 1, I am trying to install KaiserTweak, but it does not run under Windows XP and there is no info on how to get it onto the phone and how to install it (it has an XML too).
Thanks!
copy them over to your kaiser. run them by clicking on them using file explorer
Ummm ... N00bier
Thanks, but HOW?
I have activesync running, and it is doing a bang up job. I cannot figure out how to get the EXE and XML over onto the phone.
Also, how would a CAB work, same way?
OMG!
cab - copy to phone and run through file explorer
exe - run through pc/ or run directly from the device
to copy files over to your PPC...
click the explore button on your activesync app running on your desktop from there you can drag and drop the files anywhere
I drag and drop .cabs to my storage card, I have a cab folder with two folders inside one is device and one is card. It is an easy backup and reminds me of where i installed that particular cab. Now, if you have an .exe or .msi you can run that from your desktop and as long as you are synced the install wizard will install the app to your phone giving you the option to install it on the device or the card.
Now, some applications are meant to be ran from your phone, such as mplayer or Kaiser Tweaks. You copy the file over to your device and click the .exe when you want to run the program.
Hope this helps!

Is there a Cabs installation tutorial????

I've searched and I've asked and no one wants to help...Could someone please point me in the direction that I need to be in
Purpose
Sliding sounds
Games
and other applications..
Thanks
A CAB installation is just like a Desktop installation but on your phone... Transfer the CAB to you phone (I put all mine on the memory card), click on the CAB, then install app. Generally if you have a memory card, the CAB installation will give you the choice to install to the phone or card.

So I copy the folder to the card..Then I click the cab from the desktop or using the phone???
*tries it out now*
Thanks man for you input
On your storage card create a folder called "cabs". Then put the cabs you want to install on your phone in this folder. Then open up file explorer (on your phone) and go to the cabs folder. Then select the cab you want to install by pressing it on screen or with the hard down key. Your phone will start to install the cab and it will ask you where you want to install (either phone memory or your memory card), choose which one you want. Note that some programs work better when installed to the phone (read and you'll find out suggestions). After the installation is complete your phone will tell you that it was successful.

Unzip the folder on your computer and transfer the cab over into the "cab folder" on your memory card. Open file explorer on your phone, navigate to the "cab folder" on your memory card, select the cab to install and your done. No need to copy the whole folder to your phone, just the cab.

That is not a .cab I will attach a cab for you to try. I it is the transformers sliding cab. No need to unzip. Just download it to your computer and transfer it to your phone with either activesync or take out your memory card, stick it into your computer and put it in the folder you want. Let me know if it works.
Ron
thats the one I'm trying to use...So I need to pull the memory card out and active sync it... So how do I add those to the active sync task????

Open activesync and conect your device. Make sure you have a green symbol and click explore which is to the right of schedule. It opens your device and navigate to your memory card and cab folder if you have one. Then on your computer right click on the cab you downloaded and select copy. Now go to the window you brought up when you hit explore and right click in the destination and select paste. Now you have the cab on your phone. Next, on your phone open file explorer and navigate to the folder where you just pasted the cab and select it.

Come ON!!!!!
Please don't take offense. But, if you need this much help to install a CAB, you better spend a whole lot more time reading this forum before you touch you phone and really mess it up.

+1!!!!!!!!
Do not uncompress (unzip or rar) cab file.
He is uncompressing the cab into a folder and transfering it. His compression software shows the cab as compressed.
Just transfer the cab uncompressed and click on it and it will install. I bet that does the trick.
Also, if you want you can change it so that your compression software doesn't see CABs. I use WinRAR and you can just uncheck it under options>settings>integration and just uncheck CAB.
... LOL?...
a .cab is the "installer file" in windows mobile.
Steps:
1. Copy the .cab file into your phone
2. Open the File explorer in your phone and look for the .cab File
3. Click on it
4. Choose the place where you want to install it
5. Enjoy your new program(or sliding sound or anything)

Thanks Batchell..However I was able to get my question answered by ANOTHER HELPFUL FORUM!!!!! I've only had my phone for 2 months and I DIDN'T know that you didn't have to unzip the files...I didn't have to worry about that stuff with a TREO... So to all that was helpful I really appreciate it..and the others with all of the slick jokes are bunch of assholes...yep I said it..Thats why I asked for a tutorial for cab installation smartass!!!!!!
This is a developer forum. If you ask a question here, it is assumed that you have a moderate level of computer literacy. This includes being able to unzip files.
Next time, please state you know NOTHING and people will give you the appropriate level of help.
Before others flame you even more for your last comment, I'm closing this thread for being inflammatory.

CAB files opening with Opera

Hello,
I just bought the new HTC Touch Diamond today from Telus Mobility (My Provider) and when I put on a program to install and try to open the .cab file in the File Explorer, it tries to open it in Opera Mobile and I cannot install the program.
I am using ActiveSync to transfer the files from my computer to the Internal Storage area of my phone, then I find the files using the File Explorer on the phone, click the .cab file and it tries to open it in Opera Mobile.
Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. I just tried a Soft Reset, and that didn't help.
Thanks in advance!!
Try to manually rename the files to "whatever.CAB." Add .cab to it and see if that'll get it working.
Hmm..
Okay, I tried that and it didn't work.
I am trying to install a program and the files it has is:
_setup - XML Document (I click on that to activate install?)
ADVANC~1.000
ADVANC~1
ADVANC~1.003
ADVANC~1.004
ADVANC~2.002
Hope this helps..
(Yes, I realize it's not a cab file >.< )
After reviewing the situation over. You are NOT supposed to extract the files, then put them on your phone. Leave them in the archive (.cab file), upload to your phone and then execute it.
It should start installing right away.
Hope this helps for anyone else!!

How to install Apps...

I have just bought a HTC Diamond. I am new to the world of Windows Mobile.
So far the phone is great! I love it.
I have noticed you can download lots of apps and tweaks.
I want just wondering how to instal these programs on the phone.
I have downloaded a few games, Unzipped and copied over the files to the phone. It recognioses one of the games with a '.cab' format and it installed, but the rest are .xml.
Any pointers, tips and hints for this phone?
Cheers
the program you use to extract compressed files identifies cab files as compressed. All you need to do is copy the cab files to your phone and run the file from there. If you try to extract a cab file, you'll get those xml files you talked about.
1. Copy cab to phone
2. Run cab from phone to install the program
good luck

Hi - my first post!
You mention .cab files... I expect this applies to .exe's as well (for example, hot fixes)???
Any particular folder(s) on the phone we should be copying these files to before running them? I tried to install a hot fix today, but after running the .exe and receiving a 'success' message, the phone restarts OK, but the fix does not appear to have worked.
all exe install's for pocketpc's are pc exe files which have to be run
on the pc and then it use activesync to transfer the cab file to the
pocketpc and run it there

Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately, running the exe on my PC (Win Vista) doesn't seem to work.
Error: "{C:\filepath\filename.exe} is not a valid Win32 application."
Any ideas? I'm a complete newb at this so have exhausted my very limited list of possible ideas...
some people don't distribute their apps with installers so it could
just be the program itself
in which case you have to execute it on the pocketpc
this of cause mean that it will not put a shortcut to the exe
in your programs thats just something you have
to do manualy with a program like total commander
which you can also use to browse to where you put the
exe file and execute it to start the program

OK thanks - I already tried running the exe straight from my Diamond, and although it appeared to work correctly, the hotfix didn't actually fix what it claimed to. Not to worry, I'm still learning all this stuff (only had my Diamond for a day and a half now... ).
