*** Bye Bye my little Diamond - Hello E71 *** - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Ok, ... here we go...
After several years wasting my time trying to modify, tuneup, accellerate, reorganize, customize and personalize my windows mobile devices (Xda Neo, Xda Orbit, Xda Terra) it is time to say goodbye to my one month old Xda Diamond...
It doesnt seem that microsoft will ever accept that their windows mobile is, ... just a windows 1.0 with better optics. no todayscreen replacement, tf3d, tf2d, spb ms, winterface, tochcommander has made things easier, just harder, slower and even more useless.
I thought, wow, as i heard about the new HTC Touch Diamond, waited 1 month for delivery and there it was, my Diamond, wonderful tf3d, opera, gsensor,...
Slow keyboard, Windows Mobile 6.1 (no OS), slow TF3d, slow Email, hard to use interface, and last but not least a (WOW) 900mAh battery, ... that enables me to use my Diamond ONE day! WOW again, and thank you HTC.
A main desire of human being is to cutomize, to PERSONALIZE their phone, to make it YOUR phone! When you look at a diamond you'll see the light breaking into many colors , ... when you look at your diamond you'll see BLACK and WHITE. Customizable STARTSCREEN, wooooooooho with a colorful background wallpaper, thats all.
I was expecting a wonderful , powerful multimedia mobile phone, great gaming capabilities like the iphone or something, ... but, whats there? WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER MOBILE, and OPERA, thats all... a slow camera, a slow HTC Album, a useless Streaming Media Client, MOSTLY unsupported games for NATIVE VGA resolution...
Good bye Diamond,
Good bye HTC,
Good bye Microsoft Windows Mobile 5,6,6.1,
Good bye TF3D,
Good bye NO great games,
Good bye XDA Developers Forum << you should be proud of yourselves, because it is YOU who are trying to improve these devices, ... and god damn, ... its hard work!
Thanks for all your tipps and tricks and Diamond Project 3.2 and Bepe 0.99d!
**************** AND HELLO NOKIA E71 ****************

??
I have to wonder why you even considered a diamond tbh..

you should get an iPhone

Nokia 1911 >>>> all

Surely you cant customise an E71 as much as a WM Device anyway?
I had an E71 for a while for work......My only comment on the device is "thank god i have a HTC Device!"

Are there people who hate the tf3d interface who don't realise that you can turn it off and then customise the homescreen on the device more than pretty much any other OS ?

thanks for your replies, ... dont forget please, i'm just sharing my thoughts in non-perfect english. I dont except that everyone thinks what i think.
and hey, its a gameboy too, whith hardware buttons and a dpad but has perfect professional business solutions that i need.

Really?? You mean my phone shipped with a Hellboy theme that changes all the icons, puts really cool flames all over the clock, superimposes flames over my contacts pictures.... that came with my phone? I really don't think you've looked into this properly.
That said, these phones are for people who are prepared to invest time and effort into them to reap the rewards. It sounds like you have had enough of doing this, which is fine - i'm sure we will all give up one day

i dont know why you get diamond if you like qwerty keyboards in the first place ???
my messegae in the upcming weeks would be: ***bye bye my little Diamond - Hello Touch HD***

well well. Nokia is great for phone. HTC = phone = ****. HTC for customize. I like it. Some kind of killing my time to upgrade, check website, upgrade and upgrade until the time I said. I have a life now. Than I'm going to say goodbye HTC.
Again
HTC = phone = **** ( sorry to say that )
HTC = killing my boring time = yes

Hey, It's the same thing I said when I ditched my ROKR E2 and bought an a1200, but then again... I found motorlafans, and couldn't help it... it's too good to be left alone.
Then it came to me that I REALLY needed some good phone for office business (which the A1200 performed well, but lacked wifi and 3G... and syncing was a hassle). When the iPhone came out, I said «nice, pretty... but it doesn't fit my philosophy...» which is customization... not only for themes and etc. but for speed, performance and suiting needs.
I saw the first iPhone killers and said, no way. But then the Diamond appeared: small, nice, useful... then I started researching the Touch (the first one) and discovered this site...
Seeing all the possibilities, I said: What the hell! Let's roll with HTC, the mother and father of 80% of OEM handsets that took a leap and started selling their own stuff, and with great design and TRUE innovation.
BUT, the Touch wouldn't be up to the cut: too much third party apps to make it run like I THOUGHT it should...
XPERIA made its teaser trailers, and I went numb... but it was a promise of long delays, Sony branding and a lot of zeroes on the pricetag.
The Diamond turned into a bliss... beyond all the iPhone wannabes, beyond usability paradigms, I remember thinking «WOW, that's a smart way of arranging a Home Screen, without clutter, with access to all the basics upfront, just like a superphone with a Clark Kent/Superman switch... (in reference to the TouchFlo3D taking all the basics to a new level and letting the powerhorse to sit in the back and enjoy the ride)».
Whence I've got it, I found that the TF3D needed some tweaking. I thought what I always think in such ocations: THIS CAN BE BETTER, SO WHY CAN'T HTC RELEASE IT ALREADY TWEAKED???
But then again, I'm now swapping for a US version, and the rollercoaster will start again... I'm positive that the same tweaked roms can be used with the same efficiency...
Time will tell. . .

now i have to agree on this one, HTC should tweaked some of windows registry before releasing it. for example, didnt they try the device when you try to reply an sms??? you could barely read your own message with that ONE line reply window
average consumer dont know what to do with this kind of problem, all they have in their mind is ''What the hell is this???''
heck we even need an unknown 3rd party app to adjust this small problem.
HTC please TEST your device before releasing it

It might be just mine, cause I use the fonts just one point above the minimum... but mine's got 2 lines... it's easier and the high res screen does a great job rendering minuscule fonts...

I guess so.. All the tf3d is a today plugin with some bells and whistles.
This device is really nice and fast when you diable that.

and how does the e71 help there? I believe the e71 is even less customizable and has even less games available for it.

N95 or Kaiser - what makes the Kaiser better?

I'm currently using an N95 classic. Yes it's received a lot of critisicm since its release, it's not touchscreen, it doesn't have a qwerty keyboard and everyone seems to have one....but is this popularity just down to a mammoth marketing strategy or is there more to the N95 than meets the eye?
I've owned a TyTn 2 - albeit briefly - and found it pretty lame.
I'd like someone to tell me just what makes the TyTn2 better than the N95, and why I should perhaps reconsider - I do after all have a £250 Cex voucher with which I could easily purchase another TyTn 2 if you can sway me.
IS THERE ANYTHING FANTASTIC ON THE TyTn2 WHICH ISN'T AVAILABLE - IN ANY FORM - ON THE SYMBIAN PLATFORM?
It is worth mentioning that a good camera is important to me, as is multimedia playback. I'm not bothered about modding my today screen beyond changing a theme (this is completely unimportant to me) nor OS-specific yorkshire pudding timer applications/ gps applications that tell you where your golf ball is - just critical applications for things like Satellite navigation, photography, browsing, video players, wireless applications and desktop-replacement tools.
AND YES I KNOW THE KAISER HAS A QWERTY KEYBOARD.
I'm going off the two-handed qwerty input system on mobile devices - actually I quite like T9, and for long-winded essays or emails you can whip out a buetooth keyboard for use with most modern phones.....
So tell me where I'm going wrong, and why I should head straight to Cex tomorrow and get a Kaiser.
symbian platform doesnt exceed where windows mobile does

That doesn't really help me. Exceed where? Elaborate, or else your comment will just come across as an unfounded sweeping statement
^
^
example: Wm give you more freedom in customization . More detail example : Change the radio to fit your network and location. Dont forget that you can brew your own beer , I mean , cook your own Rom with a fair amount of knowledge.
Why N95 is so popular ? Its a Nokia . when peep talk about cell phones, they will at least mention the holy word "Nokia" once. HTC What ? Only dedicated users know about this brand. Nokia is one of the first Cell phone brand out there, and they have very wide range of products which meet larger demand than HTC. Symbian platform is also more user (noob) friendly , 10 years old kid can use a Nokia any time. If you hand them a Kaiser , they probably cry for mommy
Just like peeps in here, I can afford a iphone or a N95, but I still go for the Kaiser. There is a minor factor in my decision : seeing everyone around you ( and their grandmoms ) using the same phone ( iphone, N95 ... ) is not cool. Being up to the trend is cool , but being on top of the trend ( aka : rarity, unique ) is pimped . Thats why in US peep pay hefty for ****ty phones like LG prada cuz they are pimped and rare.
I changed my sliding keyboard sound to starcraft seige tank sound. Everytime I pop it out , someone "stop and stare " . I know that N95 can slide in 2 ways , but my screen can tilt 40 degree , which is more eye popping in my opinion.
Both brands got pros and cons . In the end of the day , it all depends on your flavor. We have a private joke iphone is for chick sex appeal. and Kaiser is for men in black ( with muscle ) .
If a camera is important to you than i'd suggest sticking with the n95.. or better yet, grab an n82.
I've been using windows mobile for a while now (made the switch from symbian in about '01) But my brothers all have nokias (one has the n95, the other has the black n95 (4gig or something like that) and another has the n82.. i know big family). And we kinda compete over what i can do with windows mobile and what they can do with their symbian devices.. somehow i always win with the wow factor
The reason i'm with windows mobile is because of its compatibility with microsoft exchange server (push email, contacts/calendar/notes always sync'd and backed up) and having word and powerpoint. On top of that the ability to customize it (reg edits and custom roms thanks to all the amazing cooks and devs on this forum) and the wide variety of programs available for this OS.
The camera isn't anywhere near as good as n series or sony ericsson devices, but i think this shortfall is covered by what i mentioned previously.
Also keep in mind windows mobile is like a high maintance girlfriend. You cant leave her alone for too long without her *****ing about something but thats part of having a highly customizable and powerful device. If you wanna push its limits be ready for flashing a rom atleast twice a month

Very true for the gf analogy lol. You have to keep her happy by pimping here with new stuff. And there is a joy doing that too .

I start itching when i dont flash a rom in 7 days.. i'm currently itching right now but i have so much work to do that i shouldn't even be on this forum right now!
I don't use Exchange or anything like that, and although I used to flash my Athena a lot this was mainly because there was always some annoying glitch or shortcoming in each ROM I tried!
As for cooking ROMs....well how does that really help? sure you can cook applications in there which your carrier doesn't add by default, but it's not all that difficult to remove or install an app. The Nokia is pretty vanilla anyway and I've just added what I wanted to it, moving my apps into different folders as I pleased.
I want to put all the movies I want onto a card and play them effectively, I want a good camera for when I'm out and about with a video editor so I can add titles, music and effects to clips before sending them, I want push email, maybe a bit of IM, full office functionality (including pdf viewing and zip/rar extracting capability), fast gallery capable of smoothly rendering and displaying pictures copied from my digital camera, I want a good browser with flash support for when I'm within range of a hotspot or in a 3.5g area; and a quick browser for when I just need to look something up quickly (Opera mini 4.1), I want full GPS support including a comprehensive Satnav application and google maps,
I want a Youtube client that can save clips so I can show friends and don't have to go through the browser everytime, I want an Mp3 editor to edit tags and crop and cut mp3s for ringtones and message tones, i want bluetooth keyboard support, built in FM radio, the ability to connect my laptop to the internet via my phone through Wifi, an SMS reader, a screenshot-taker, a torrent downloader, a limewire-style Gnutella client.
That's about it at the moment. All of these are available on the N95 and almost all for free. Sure there's no qwerty keyboard, but I bet I can type faster with T9 anyway since there are no dedicated number keys on the Tytn 2. I'll also have a spare hand to carry my shopping as I won't have to use both thumbs to type.
The most convincing argument I've heard so far is that I could make my TyTn 2 sound like a tank.
I definitely can't do that on my N95.
You've basically answered your own question. Granted, most of the stuff you can do with your N95 can be done with the TyTN II.
But if you can't list a pro to have a TyTN II when you had briefly, then stick with the N95.

ok, I cant seem to understand the reason of this thread. From both of your threads is clearly obvious that u prefer Nokia so why are u asking?
u should take the nokia, and u will as I assume, am I right?
Sorry if my post looks too impolite. Dont want to be offensive.
If you find the N95 to be more suited to your needs, please carry on using it. "Better" is just a manner of perspective.
The best advise I could give is try to borrow a TyTN II and use it for a bit, see if it suites your needs and usage patterns. Then decide which you like better... or you can be greedy and get both!
--
BTW I gave our extra N95 to my sister kept my TyTN II and Nokia 6267, I reckoned my TyTN II can do everything I wanted and it sync'd better with my desktop [XP + Outlook 2007 + ActiveSync 4.5]. My Nokia 6267 is for my call/sms all-you-want SIM to same network [SUN cellular PH].
another computer exchange customer
personally id go for the kaiser as i do not like nokia due to the random faults that go wrong with their phones, and also due to the kaiser running WM which as said before is alot more customizable etc.
CEX offer a 12 month warranty on their phones too which is good if you decide to get the kaiser.
i don't know as much about the n95 as the n82, but i suppose it probably does what it does pretty well, and the n95 probably does what it does better than the tytn II does what it does, if you get what i mean. =P
but the difference is, that the kaiser is expandable, and it's compliant with a (albeit slightly handicapped for the WM platform) suite of applications for the windows platform. it syncs almost flawlessly (and definitely more completely) than any symbian platform with outlook, opens up word, excel, and powerpoint files when i need them on the move, etc. also, because of the expandability, the WM platform would be among the first to be able to take advantage of any new technology not specifically designed for the WM device specifically, either as it comes out, or as an enterprising programmer whips up a program for it. take for example how both the n95 and WM platform can both browse the internet. but also say some new security code comes up that prevents access to some webpages. you can bet some programming companies like netfront or other will probably get some code out for WM platform users to upgrade to while you might not be as flexible with other platforms. i like how i can log on to my bank account via wireless/3G and manage my accounts (transfer funds) in emergency times through my tytn II.
all that said, the tytn II will have all the pitfalls of first adopter technology. it won't be as slick nor "do what it does" as well as the n95. i mentioned the n82 earlier, and i'm seriously thinking of that phone as a backup to my tytnII. for me, the n82 has a great camera, GPS, and the T9 keypad (although the keys are a bit small), and i know, unlike my kaiser, all will work pretty much flawlessly as advertised. but will it replace the kaiser? the answer is a definitive no. i need the kaiser for what it does (see above). but it'll be a nice backup to have, especially for a night out, or when i just want the convenience of the T9 keypad, which i find much easier and faster to use one-handed.
Firstly hello.
In your opening post you mentioned that you have briefly owned a Kaiser and that you found it prety lame???????????????????????????????. You, sir, are obviously NOT clued up on Pocket PC's nor the TyTN II!!! It is not a device for ID10T's.
It should be obvious to you then, which device you should choose. I think you already know the answer to your own question. Why start a thread then?
Do I really have to tell you what you already know? Do I really have to tell you that the N95 is no match for ANY pocket pc, let alone the TyTN II? Do I really have to tell you that Windows Mobile is unrivalled for it's abundance of applications compared to Symbian? Do I really have to tell you that Symbian apps, if available are more expensive? Do I really have to tell you that Windows Mobile is far better, more flexible and more compatible when synchronising with Laptops etc?
And finally, if a camera is that important to you, get yourself a nice Kodak Z612 for near-professional photos. As far as the TyTN II goes for camera, it is one of the best on any pocket pc. The TyTN II with CorePlayer v1.2.2 is unrivalled for playing movies and videos. TomTom on the TyTN II is absolutely superb. The TyTN II is also tweakable to levels only dreamed about by Nokia owners.
So, mon ami, the answer is obvious.....but you already knew that.
Resistance is futile.....
Get the TyTN II...........if you have the brains.....or maybe better yet, stick to the lame N95...it will obviously suit you better.
hehehehehehehe
In the medical profession - it is interesting that the person the least qualified to make a decision is ultimately the one who makes it - the person who is sick. Think about it - YOU decide if you are going to see a chropractor, a surgeon, a homeopathic doctor - right?
Will a chropractor recommend a surgeon?
Will an MD recommend a chiropractor?
So - to bring this analogy home - you come to a Kaiser board and ask (after insulting the phone) if this phone that you say is lame is better than the phone that you ultimately went with? The users on this board are all biased for the Kaiser.
It is like going to Mexico, going into a bar and yelling "Remember the Alamo!"

Bingo! Thats exactly my opinion.
As soon as you dispense with advantages like the full qwerty keyboard, and the touchscreen, the point of your post starts to go out the window. Sure, if neither of those things has any importance for you, you may well be better off with the N95, or perhaps something even simpler than that. For the rest of us, who want or need a full featured pocket PC, the Kaiser is the much more obvious choice.
Why Kaiser? Answer: EVERYONE has Nokia phones or IPhones. Only the exclusive fews who KNOW the extensive power of Kaiser enough, to carry and own it! The rest of the folks out there, just stick with your iphones, nokia phones for it's easy to use and require the least brain power to operate the phones. Kaiser is not your typical "My phone is cooler than yours" Phone.

Agree with most of your points , except the last sentence
Kaiser is the typical "my phone is cooler than yours" . Why ? Cuz my brothers, sisters, cousins, neighbors, dogs and cats own a iPhone or a N95 , not the freaking Kaiser

That was not my attempt to give your a sound argument, but if you think so , thanks. . Too bad , you didnt get the joke . More than that , I can make it moan like a biotch every time I slide it in and out , how cool is it !!!
Yea, I get your point when you started this thread so I just fool around with you . But most of the peeps here dont think so . Its not a very best place to stroke your N95 epeen cuz the folks living under the kaiser kingdom are pretty hostile.
Anyway, N95 is a good phone . But compare it with Kaiser is just like orange vs apple .

iSwish - "iPhoneish interface"

Just saw this on Engadget, and figured everyone here will be interested in this. A swiss company made a user interface for all WM devices that emulates the look and feel of the iPhone interface. This company also tried to add "multitouch-ish" functions to the WM devices by simulating multi touch features while displaying photos and web pages. .
Looks pretty cool so far and it has potential. The article states that it will be available for download in May.

Update 03/May/2008:
We would like to thank everyone for their support and for Joining our Beta program. We have received over 2000 requests and we will be breaking them into 3 tiers with an increasing number of Beta tester in each one. The tier 1 will be selected late this week and will only be about 10 people, if things go well then late the following week we will expand to 100 and before months end over 1000.
Lastly to answer the number one question we have had, yes we do plan to start testing the iSwish development kit in the next 30 days. This will allow any designer to add iswish capabilities to their own windows mobile/PPC/CE applications. If you are a developer and interested in beta testing this please e-mail us at “[email protected]” with the subject “iSiwsh development environment Beta” and your company, name and current development environment.

True with iZoom...dualtouch is now possible on a singletouch interface. Look at the youtube video just above my post...they even installed dualtouch on a 6yr old device.
I guess it's a kind of dualtouch, though it seems that one point has to remain fixed when in this mode. Still could be quite useful I'm sure.
Looks promising but overall I think the idea is silly - I would of just bought an iPhone

ok so just by one then...
you will end up with no GPS, MMS, Video recording, Bluetooth, SD slot, 3G etc etc etc
you will have a phone with a nice screen...thats is...I like the iphone but I dont like the actual phone....feel me ?
Exactly. The iPhone is nice looking, smooth, sleek and shiny, the Kaiser is big heavy and some have said ugly. But compare the features. The iPhone is a million miles away.
I briefly considered the iPhone before I got my Kaiser and I made the right choice. The clincher for me was the commercialism surrounding the iPhone. Too many people have jumped on the bandwagon and it's just not that cool anymore. Personally I don't think it ever was - a phone for show-offs who just want to impress people. The Kaiser is different. It may not look the best and the WM interface may not be to everybody's liking. But it can be a SatNav or a GameBoy, a notepad or a Webcam. The possiblilities are almost endless. And if you really can't live without the iPhone's inteface, you don't have to look far to get something similar, or even better.
Anyway, off topic, but that's my rant. I feel better now...

I agree completely, but after buying an iPhone and using it for a week or so, I really loved the interface. I love the screen and how easy it is to navigate through everything. The browser is ten times better than PIE, and although you can get Opera or Skyfire, on the 2.8" screen they are still really difficult to use. In the end I chose to keep my kaiser over the iphone because I couldn't get used to typing without a hardware keyboard, but in all honesty I really loved the iphone interface.

Hello Beta Tester,
We will have an update for you later this week on iSwish, but I thought I would point you all to the new video one of our developers posted last night showcasing the iZoom in full multi-touch with an interesting twist at the end. There was a measure of disbelief in its authenticity, so we hope this clears that up.

2 simple question before buying Diamond

Hi!
I'm thinking about buying a Diamond, but I've got some wuestions about it.
1.) Is it possible to change the default TF3d to something more iPhone-like? Maybe with some SPB application?
(I like iPhone's simplicity, that control with short, little finger-moves, but at general iPhone is too dumb for me.)
2.) Is it possible to turn off threaded SMS-viewing?
Thanks for the replies.
1. yes, seen it on Youtube somewhere...if you search the forum you might find the link ~
2. yes possible and extremely easy -> via advanced config. tool
...now, head out and buy your Diamond jewel
TF3D is just another shell like any SPB-application or other cab.
After all, the Diamond is nothing more then a Windows Mobile fone...

I like that, better than iPhone. I have a HTC P3300, and wan tto upgrade to DImaond. My collegue got az iPhone, it's nice, it's comfortable, it has awesome browser, but it has strict rules, and a little dumb for me. I love when i can change almost everything, when something is real configurable.
Well, as for the browser, there's nothing better than Opera in the mobile world right now.
I'm gonna get flamed for this but you should SERIOUSLY consider your purchase mate. There are many hang-ups, battery life and screen issues being huge ones. I love my Diamond, but perhaps that's because it's just an interim phone until the Sony Xperia 1 comes out some time this month. The Omnia is a worthy alernative if you want to buy a phone now however as it's more of an all-rounder.
However, if battery life and the need to tweak lots doesn't bother you, you couldn't ask for a better phone right now.

consider yourself flamed by a very satisfied diamond user.
hang-ups? BS!! never experienced one, not even when i had the original ROM.
screen issues? BS!!!! (best VGA screen).
battery life? BS!! my battery last 24 hours....more than i need. i do charge my diamond during the night...
tweaks a lot? BS!! used once Shaps Advanced Configuration, export the settings and that's all the tweaks i need. always using the same file.
i played with Omnia today. first i look around to be sure nobody sees me (from the distance looks sooooo much like an iPhone!) then i had to get used to the pixels on the screen (lots of them) and then i tried to put it in shirt pocket...and that was all i need...
I meant hang-ups as in disadvantages. The screen is great, but the build quality seems to be inconsistent. 24hrs battery may not be enough for some.
Just trying to give this guy all the info he needs.

i really want to understand. i am not joking, i am not trying to be sarcastic or a smart ass.
who needs more than 24 hours of battery??
who is far from an electrical socket or his car more than 24 hours??
Look at this

Some want the iphon look's like a Diamond
As your questions have been answered already i won't answer them but i would suggest looking at the Sony Xperia (however it's spelt) depending on your preference but if you really want a Diamond then definately get one
True, 24hrs is sufficient.
But for some, they need/want more battery power to browse internet, watch films/listen to music and use gps. I don't think the Diamond would let you do all that in one day. I'd say it would give you 24hrs if you browsed on the internet moderately and used gps sparingly. Films and music really exhaust battery life...
Don't get me wrong, I love my Diamond. But it's not a multimedia/internet powerhouse in terms of battery. I think people will be dissappointed if they think it is, that's all.

Can you name any handheld device, let alone a mobile phone that will give you over 24 hours of use after watching movies, playing music/games or using gps,I cant think of one.
I usually get around 2-3 days out of my diamond, thats with some web browsing, youtube, calls and texts and maybe a short journey using gps.All i have done is updated to duttys 1.8 rom with the new radio and it made a world of difference.

ppl, this is a phone with some extras!. this is not a digital camera, not a personal PC, not an MP3 and movies player, not a GPS dedicated device. it does a little of everything, and it does it well enough.
Ok you know what, read-read my posts - i'm not saying the Diamond is a bad phone. The omnia etc does what the diamond does but has more battery life. So all i'm saying is, if you intend to use the above named features a lot, the Diamond may not be for you. Of course, no phone will last you a long time when using such features.
Jeez, what is it with some of you people?

And reading around some forums, some peoples omnia's have a fast battery drainige issue.
I was actually considering an omnia, great specs, but after having a look at my mates,I think i made the right choice in the diamond. The omnia's screen is to pixelated for me after using the gorgeous vga screen on the diamond.
Most games can be played on it, but you can use the resize app, which comes with Panosha's Rom, but I havent used it really.
Go for the Diamond - 480 x 640 VGA - thats INSANE.
The pic quality is awesome.
Movie play back is great.
Only limitation is the unswappanle 4Gig internal drive.
But for some of us thats enough.
The iphone is just a ipod with phone function as a gimmic, like when phones came out with built in cams.
Whats the use of bluetooth if you cant transfer files over it??????
And for those are going to say how good the ipod sounds and blah blah blah - you shoud try the Cowon music players and others.
The Diamond is a pocket PC ! Enough said
Its a very impressive device , which is packed full of featues.
But be carfull when you buy , some unfortunate people have got a few bad eggs, where the screens have a yellow tint and the back heats up.
Mine however, knock on wood - is working perfectly.
Bought in Sinagapore.
Its such a sic little device.
I thought the back heating up was not a problem?
Some people report excessive heating. Though I think majority of them just overstates! (clearly)
Also I can't confirm whether the "minority" really suffers from that problem.

Palm Pre

Makes Windows Mobile look like it's from the dark ages:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/palm-pre-in-depth-impressions-video-and-huge-hands-on-gallery/
I know! It looks amazing! Except the fact that it's stuck between qvga and vga :| Love the wireless charging though! The new OS looks sick! WM7 should be better than that or I'll hate M$ more than I do already.
Now that looks interesting! Going to have to keep an eye on this one...
The Pre looks amazing. It's small, looks great (especially the OS) AND has a physical keyboard. The only thing that's not so great is the screen resolution.
And I agree with the OP, it makes WM 6.1 look very outdated :/

I think that Microsoft is begining to make the same mistake that Palm did, in allowing their OS to grow stagnant. Palm waited forever to finaly update the OS (is this a new Palm OS? I could be wrong), and MS seems to be doing the same in taking forever to get WM7 out.
Hopefully WM7 will be worth the wait like this new Palm phone seems to have been.

I love WinMo, and have never been impressed by iPhone or Blackberry. Palm's new OS is a great balance between functionality and a delightful UI. Hell, it's not a balance, it's the best of both worlds!
Kudos to Palm. I finally see a smartphone I want since my Blue Angel flew away, and it's not an HTC phone.
Looks good but I hope it's easy to say port apps from android otherwise it's going to be a pita having 4 seperate operating systems on a mobile (android, wm, osx and now palm (again))
The nice thing too is it seems the whole thing is written in very simple coding language. With the very blank "desktop" location and the different possabilities of adding "toolbars" in and above the "Dock" we may have an OS that has the versitility for customization that Windows Mobile gives with the finger focused aesthetically pleasing UI of the iPhone and the focus on simplicity and intuitive use that the old Palm OS focused on.
my next phone
The UI is everything I wanted from a mobile phone platform; the actual hardware is everything I wanted in a mobile phone. It's nothing short of brilliant.
This is one of the best reviews of the Palm Web OS. Detailed descriptions on how the system workd on Palm's new Pre. They even have the official video form Palm's press event.

very cool device,................
good phone ...bad timing....and maybe a little too late. If it has a ridiculous price tag on it then palm would have a really hard time selling these in this economy.
I found another video the explains alittle more about the OS. I like the part towards the end of the video.

Why I hate my Touch Pro

Well... This is a personal rant and I've already seen a lot of similar messages. It usually starts with an "my iPhone is better" and the answer always seems to be something along the lines of "ah, it sucks, our Touch Pro is way better, you'll be coming back crying", yadda-yadda-yadda. Here is my take - and I don't mean to offend anyone... I write this because I'm totally dissapointed with MY Touch Pro. Maybe you feel good about yours, it does whatever you needed/wanted, you simply love it.
iPhone is better. A heck of a lot better. I wish I had chose to buy one instead of this piece of crap that calls itself a "smartphone". Why? Well... I came to the world of Windows Mobile with a Tytn, a great all-round phone that had some problems but mostly did what it was supposed to do. The friendly guys and gals in this site managed to squeeze every ounce of life, speed, features and durability from it, making me totally love it. Custom ROMs made it faster and faster, added new and useful features... but... But then came "the new phones". Theoretically, they were faster, they had more memory, "they were better" in every single category. And Touch Pro was at the top, so, after lots of thought, loving its design and hating the fact I had to use an external GPS device with my Tytn, I splashed the cash and bought a brand new, shiny Touch Pro. More memory. More speed. Better screen. Better graphics. Better sound. Better GPS... NOT.
Even with custom ROMs, my Touch Pro crawls like a snail when compared with my Tytn. I mean it, and I tried more than 10 different ones (and I don't count different versions, but different cooks). The device simply seems unable to cope with its official interface, Touchflo 3D, whereas Manilla 2D ran screaming on the Tytn. Touch Pro has more Ram, theoretically making Opera usable. Goodbye ol' crashes of the Tytn, with Touch Pro I can finally browse the Internets happily! Or can I? Opera seems to totally suck compared to the iPhones Safari, and that doesn't come from an iPhone lover - I hate almost anything Apple ever created, including the iPhone. BUT... Whenever I'm with a friend of mine that has an iPhone, browsing the net through it is pure joy compared to the nightmare of Touch Pro. Appart from feeling more "fluid", iPhone is a lot faster when changing from portrait to landscape. Yeah, the online keyboard sucks, but so does the hardware keyboard of Touch pro compared to the one in my old Tytn (I know, "it's my opinion", never said it's a global rule).
The slow-as-hell problem applies to every single function or application in my Touch Pro. I'm with the afformentioned friend and we want to tweet something? Perfect. In ten seconds he's taken a snapshot in his iPhone, opened Twitter and posted a message, picture included. I'm still waiting for a Twitter app to load. We want to take some notes? He taps, writes, saves. In 5 secs. I'm taking out the stylus, for the interface buttons are too small for my fingers. I select Start>Utilities>Notes, wait for the Notes app to load, wait, wait, after it loads hunt the tiny "new" somewhere below the screen, wait for a new note to open, open the keyboard, wait for the screen to realign, type, wait for the characters to appear (and yes, I have applied the TX9 tweak but the keyboard is still painfully slow), save the note, close the keyboard, close the notes app, wait for the screen to realign. Ah, what a joy.
And the apps! Oh, those glorious apps! We have ten unusable RSS readers, 5 different commercial programs that try to improve our phones interface (each failing miserably in different ways), and... Well, that's it. We then have about 10 different calculators and stopwatches. And we call this, THIS, "a productivity device"? WTF can we do with this brick? What is it useful for? Taking photos? Even that is slow-as-hell compared with Tytn, after trying every-single-tweak. The subject of the photo has to be perfectly still, or else everything is blurry.
And the insult is that whenever I search for something new and useful for this brick, I find new fonts, new wallpapers, new manilla tweaks, some scripts or mini-apps that change the new WM6.5 chromes appearance! These are our "apps", when iPhone has new note-taking apps, new task managers, new VNC-like applications, emulators, games, anything... And yet we bash it as a kiddie phone and we hail out Touch Pro as a "serious" device. What's serious about a phone that cost me more than my wage (yeah, it costs -that- much in Greece where I live) and all that I can do with it is stare at slightly-different-colored-menues-than-the-default-ones? That's all there is to it?
Sorry for this, and sorry for coming out as an angry SOB, but I'm up to here with it. I'd really like somebody to come up and give me some advice or tips on how to make HTCs brick useful in some way, show me that I didn't actually throw my money away on a useless gadget. 'Cause I paid for an almighty device that in theory could do almost anything. It's as "smart" as my Tytn, it's slower than it in GPS and taking Pictures, there's no touch-friendly software for it (har-har, and it's called "Touch Pro", yeah, right)... WTF am I supossed to use it for? Paperweight?
I'm all ears people. Anyone wanting to tell me how they actually use their pricey device? Why you're happy with it and wouldn't change it for anything else? Does anyone -not- have the problems I have, and what did he do to avoid them? Am I totally wrong - and why?
Best regards
Ducklord

Still love mines....iphone in my eyes is a childs toy just a bunch of flashy things to take your mind off what it lacks....Wow my iPhone can cook dinner for me with this app,but then again to MMS i have to pay another $600 to get a new model of the phone when I just bought a 3G 6 months ago.....and I get no warranty....Tell me how the iphone is better when everytime they add new things that should've been on the phone from the start you have to buy a new model to have?MMS,Video,Teethering
Honestly, you make a lot of good points.
I've had similar experiences with people using the iphone in the same ways. It may be nothing more than an "application launcher" but the applications actually do something useful, quickly.
I don't like the iphone. I don't like apple. As a matter of fact I actually hate both of them very much... but I see your point and I'm almost as fed up as you are.
I'm looking forward to hearing what people reply with.
The Microsoft store may alleviate some of this, hopefully, but I'm not holding my breath. My plan is to wait for the next generation of phones, see if HTC still screws everyone over with drivers or other ass-hattery, and make a decision then.
Incidentally I have a Jornada 568 from 2002 that runs emulated games as well as my Fuze, plays Mp3s without stuttering (while using an external keyboard to write short stories with), plays video without tearing, and has a standard headphone jack. If I could I would just stick a phone in it and use that instead.
hey ducklord, sorry to hear about ur misery. I own a touch pro, and i find it to be quite perfect.. perhaps with a good set of ROM. Why don't you try out EnergyROM magic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530882)? It works like a charm for me...

From what the afformentioned friend told me, "no-mms" is a problem of AT&T or some other provider that offers the iPhone in the States. To prove it, he sent me an MMS "giving me the finger". He's on Cosmote (Greek Provider), and uses a totally un-tweaked, locked, out-of-the-box iPhone.

As I told you, no-mms is not an issue. Tethering, if you mean "having access to the Internets from your laptop through your phone" -IS- a problem, witch though can be solved by buying a USB/PCMCIA/Something GPRS modem. For about 30 euros. On the other hand, not 30, not 50, not 400 euros can make my Touch Pro something more useful than a brick. You mean, you REALLY use tethering all the time? You REALLY use video conference? The rates are sky-high here in Greece - 10 video calls would cost the same as the damn phone! Ah, and here's another point where iPhone (and almost any other device) is better: was your Touch Pro usable out of the box? Want me to point you to other posts by other users that say how much it sucked until they installed a custom Rom (and thus lost its warranty)? THIS is how a device is supposed to work? By exchanging its official warranty with a custom-cooked ROM, created by people that, up to a point, are GUESSING what-should-work (and they're doing a great job at that)... For Baal's shake, cooks, developers and lots of users are prowling the insides of other phones to find drivers witch they'll be able to tweak so that our damn brick will be able to play videoclips and long-forgotten-emulators like 3-year-old devices do! I mean, gosh, HTC should PAY XDA Developers for making their phone bearable! But, ofcourse, you are happy... No video, no speed, sluggish loading and typing, godawful GPS, no useful apps whatsoever... But you have tethering. Somehow, I don't quite believe you.

AAAND, ladies and gentleman, that's the whole point. Even with all the other problems, IF, and thats the most important thing, IF our phone had some really useful AND easy-to-use apps, that other phones didn't, or IF it excelled in some way, the situation would be bearable. Its not just that its hardware sucks, its insulting that we can't run (and use) stuff on it!
And please, if any programmer is reading this, the place is called XDA Developers. Please, DEVELOP something. No, tweaking the interface isn't "developing", it's "tweaking". And although I don't know anything about programming, I'd be more than happy to "develop" graphics for a useful app.

hahaha took the words out of my mouth... they say that WM has thousands of apps but from what i see its, 1000 half-done interfaces / 5000 tweaks, customizers, and "fixes" and 50 somewhat of apps ready to use that does at least something other than what the phone could already do but wanted to make it look "pretty" like a new contact manager, dialer, etc.
on the other hand the iphone has their own job search app, NBA play by play app, and more things other than what the phone could already do in the first place
im worried about "Marketplace" as well cuz there are multiple screen resolutions, models, and kinds of WM devices that the compatibility will not be all there when it comes to all the apps
I want to clarify that as unimpressed with the Fuze as I am, I am more than impressed and grateful for all the work done for it by the people here on XDA.
I'm glad to have a repository of software, knowledge, and development like this.
It makes me wonder what could be done with a machine that didn't need to be fixed or flashed right out of the box.
My problems with this phone stem from AT&T, HTC themselves, and to a lesser extent Microsoft. I appreciate that there's such a supportive community cleaning up these three company's messes.

Well, I'm grateful for XDA, but not for "all the work they've done for Touch Pro". No, I'm not whining or disregarding their work, it's just that I had the idea they really squeezed the life out of my Tytn, but they give me the impression that they've just touched the surface of Touch Pro.

Patience
May be you just need some patience. How long has the TyTn been out compared to the TP? As for me, I have very little experience with the iPhone but my Fuze(unlocked and on T-Mobile) has very little delay in any program. I am running 1 of the best ROMs (imho), NRG's wonderful magic series.
who cares about the iphone..i just got the palm pre for my business device and man its such a relief..i still have my fuze but find myself using it less and less..its so nice to have a device not have so many issues..and just work the way i need it to..and i know webOS is still young but man i think its gonna be the next big thing..ill never give up on windows mobile though...it may be not up to the times in GUI but its an old bull and knows what its doing..but for now i need something that works with the times so my Pre is my main device for now..im still flashing every new rom NRG puts out tho on my fuze lol and ive gotten to tap into my linux side with rooting my Pre and doing all the hacks
NRGs ROMs are what my Touch Pro runs, and although quite fast in the TouchFlo 3D department, loading and running apps takes a lot of time for my taste. And just think that NRGs is one of the fastest ROMs but, still, Touch Pro can't match the usage speed of Tytn (I mean in the interface department), not even counting the 5 to 15 seconds for an app to load (5 to 10 seconds for the camera? The subject of the photo will be dead and gone until the snap is taken!). And even if you put up with this sluginess... Where are the apps? After posting the 1st message I did a visit to "the usual places" to see what's new in WM world... The joy is unimaginable! Three new versions of the same 'ol SPB software, a "smart calculator" and a stopwatch... Great...
As for the Pre, well, when your wage is arround 700-900 euros and a phone like those we're talking about costs from 600 to 1200 euros... Let's just say I'm stuck with this brick for two-three more years. Ahrgh... Teh pains...
Best regards

PS: How, tell me, HOW hard would it be to create two simple, decent apps, one for taking Notes and one for managing Tasks? I'd be in heaven if I found two, just these two apps, that loaded fast, where Touch Friendly and could sync with Outlook. Or some GTD apps. Or some productivity ones. That could sync with our PC. Heck, I bought a WINDOWS MOBILE device so as to sync to my WINDOWS PC. And an Apple phone has more apps that sync with outlook. And better.
PS2: Have you realized how shafted we are from anyone and any company? Evernote for WM is the only decent notes-taking app I found. And, SPECIFICALLY in WM, you have to have a data connection active to use it. No local notes and syncing later. No local storage, no local search. After we payed one wage for out phone, we have to pay another one in data costs to use it! Ack! De Happines! De Joy!
have you tried thumbcal? it is a finger friendly GUI and it replaces the wm standard calender and tasks and i believe you can take notes down too..and so if you have an exchange server setup (i use mail2web) then itl sync everything and you can sync outlook to your exchange too and there you have device to pc seemless syncing and then i used this regedit whch i made to use thumbcal when you tap a shortcut that uses a hard wired shortcut (like tf3d)
yah once htc shifted from TI OMAP to Qualcomm MSMxxxx processors things went downhill...
I dunno I have a sprint touch pro and on mighty rom wm6.5 and I love it. It's as fast as my gf's iphone. My phone is alot better than hers except playing music. Plus, I can't stand looking at the screen of iphone! The resolution is really bad and I get a headache!!
I dunno why you have to wait to load a note program because it doesn't have any loading for me. I can write and save in no time. Also, when you open the keyboard there is a shortcut for notes. You can always assign your talk button as a note program too.
I'll admit that there are some delays when switching apps, and some apps take longer to load than others.
You do realize that there are other apps out there besides what's on this site don't you? There are literally thousands of apps out there. Look at Handandgo for example.
My ROM has PocketNotepad cooked in. As soon as I open it, it opens me to a blank notepad and I can start typing right away. It opens in 1-2 seconds for me, which I think is reasonable.
I don't use tasks, so I can't really speak for that side of it.
i dont find energyroms particularly fast, not sure why everyone says its fast. it's definitely not faster compared to a tweaked lite rom. but i guess with the eye candy and full suite of apps, it's relatively fast.
I tried launching notepad and it took less than 2 secs to be able to write a new note. if it's that slow on your phone, your phone obviously has issues.
Partially agree
On the first few days I was thinking the same because I've been waiting for a phone like this for ages and here in Romania it costs more then double of an average salary so you can imagine that people get scared once they give out so much money on a single device which doesn't behave as it should. In fact it has quite a few bugs but still wouldn't change it for the iPhone...
Notes application starts in about 2 seconds for me and energyRom is decently fast - I wish I could remove that colourful taskbar though because I hate it and no one gave me an answer how to change it. Even tried one method and had to reflash the device. Anyway...
The GPS problem pisses me off because I thought it's as good as the one from the Diamond but turns out to be awful. I use IGO8 and it sucks. It locks on my position in about 10 minutes. Not good at all.
The camera is not bad, music is decent, but those aren't things that smart-phones are famous for...
Overall I am happy with this device, or should I say I have no other choice then to be happy with it and would like to thank the people from XDA Developers for their time and for correcting the errors that Microsoft should had corrected. Waiting for new apps and as ducklord said - I can help designing some of the apps so if any developer needs design, we're here. I'm not good at programming though.
