Phone Calls while connected to HSDPA - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

The ability to make a phone call and maintain a data connection at the same time is a great feature but I noticed that when I make or receive a phone call my data connection is disconnected. Now i know that it's not possible if you're on EDGE or G but why does it disconnect when I have full HSDPA reception?

Missed Calls

Hi,
I have a Dopod 595. I cannot make calls whenever the phone is synchronizing or downloading email (Push Mail) or even when I have IE running loading pages. I am on Maxis 3G network. The phone has the ā€˜Uā€™ sign. I thought if I am on 3G network, I can still make calls or receive calls when the data line is being used? Currently, if data is being downloaded, incoming calls will become miss calls automatically. At least when I am on EDGE or GPRS, it will disconnect the data line.
Why is this so? Please enlightened me.

Are HSDPA and 3G mutually exclusive ?

I have a little problem here: If i turn on HSDPA i get the H icon and REALLY GOOD internet speed, but i can't make video calls. If i turn it off, i get 3G icon, pretty good internet speed and video calls. Can't i have HSDPA turned on AND also have 3G (video calls) ?
HSDPA is used only for downloading data when you hvae it on. Thats a little starnge and sounds more like a bug to me than something wrong with the network or Kaiser

Thanks, i kinda figured it's a bug, although it could be obvious for someone who actually knows how this stuff works that you can't have 3G and HSDPA at the same time.
Can anybody try to make a video call while H icon is displayed, please? (no need to wait for someone to answer, i get "can't make video call" immediately, just dial a bogus number)
I rarely get the H icon, only at the aiport at sertain places. But like austinsnyc said, i would have expected it would switch back automatically
As far as I'm aware, you can't make a video call on any mobile phone while there is a data transfer in progress.
Basically the answer is "yes" because a data transfer session and a video call are mutually exclusive, and the phone only uses HSDPA (and shows an "H") when there's an active session, so you can't make a video call when the "H" is showing...
Just to confuse things further, I'm pretty sure it's the network operator that decides how long their customer's phones hold on to an HSDPA connection...
T-Mobile and Vodafone in the UK are the only HSDPA-enabled networks that I've used, and they both return me to a "normal" 3G connection immediately after a data transfer, so the "H" is only displayed briefly - when the phone is actively transferring data.
After the data is downloaded, the HSDPA connection is closed immediately and my phone switches back to the "3G" icon, which allows me to make a video call. If your network allows the HSDPA session to stay active, then you'd need to end it yourself before making a call...
(BTW, this is just my understanding, please feel free to tell me I'm talking rubbish!)
Thanks guys, your info got me a lot closer to the truth (i now know you can have 3G while HSDPA is enabled in settings).
Those really not interested skip this part:
My problem is that i NEVER see the 3G icon and i can't make video calls if i enable HSDPA, even if i don't make a data connection, just enable it in settings (in my network even the name of the operator changes when i have 3G coverage so i know for sure that if i enable HSDPA i never get anything 3G, no data speed, no video call)
To make things more clear: it's like i have two phones:
1. with HSDPA or GPRS depending on location and availability, this is what i get if i enable HSDPA in settings, no video calls, operator name always "Vodafone RO"
2. with 3G or GPRS depending on location and availability, this is what i get if i disable HSDPA in settings, i can make / receive video calls, operator name "3G Vodafone RO" or "Vodafone RO" when 3G not available
I guess this is operator dependent, and it's probably something with my network, but it's really disturbing since i cant have both video calls AND really high speed data, only one at a time with soft reset. I guess i'll call thier customer service.
Sorry for the big block of text...

Pricipally, a 3G phone could handle a PS (packet switch) connection and a CS (channel switch) connection simultaneously. The Kaiser is, however, apparently not in this class. The unability to set up a video call while there is "H" in the display can be due to the network configuration. If the operator uses the same carrier for both "normal" PS and HS(D)PA you can probably perform a video call while you see the "H". If the network uses separate carriers for CS/PS and HSPA it is quite likely that the operator will not let you make a video call while your terminal is listenig to a HSPA-enabled carrier.

Aren't phone calls supposed to interrupt Edge?

I know I can not recieve Data while on a phone call with Edge. But shouldn't an incoming call interrupt an Edge connection?
I have a stock AT&T Tilt rom (latest WM 6.0 not 6.1) I have KaiserTweak with most settings in it set to advised. Is there anything in KaiserTweak that will cause this to happen?
I am trying to run IM+ on the phone and when it is online and connected all calls go straight to voicemail. Also when I tether and a phone call comes in it goes straight to voicemail and doesn't ring my phone. I WANT it to interrupt my Data service so I can get the phone call. (it is a phone after all)
This seems to be more of a function of the specific phone rather than the phone network. For instance, if you call a 1st gen iphone (2g/edge) while it is on an active data connection, it will disconnect the data session and the phone will ring. However, the same is not true of a Kaiser/Tilt.
My best guess is that phones w/ 3g pay less attention to edge performance and features because 3g can coexist simultaneously with a phone call.

On the tilt, when you're connected to EDGE, calls will interrupt the connection IF it is idle and no data is being transferred. If data is being transmitted then the call is rejected. I've never seen anything about changing that behavior.
2.5G vs 3G
First of all excuse me for my English.
I know that EDGE is an evolution of GPRS, commonly knowed as 2nd generation. For this reason is called 2.5 generation. In GPRS and EDGE, data connection is stopped during a voice call. EDGE inherit the behaviuor of GPRS. Only 3g standards like UMTS HSDPA or HSUPA allows data connection during a voice call.
Ciao, from Italy

It turns out that if you have the "Disconnect After" setting enabled in KaiserTweak phone calls will not stop Edge. If I turn this off then I receive calls while on an Edge connection. Seems kinda silly to me. Now I have to pretty much have data on at all times. Goodbye battery life.

Missed Calls when connected to GPRS Internet

Hello all,
Have any of you guys come across this problem with your X1...I was connected to the internet via GPRS earlier this afternoon doing a little browsing and have now received 3 missed call notifications which were made during my browsing.
Does the phone not receive calls when connected to GPRS...very annoying.
I'm using the Touch X 10.1 rom by Smaberg but don't think that is the problem...any ideas!!!
some phone operators with older hardware in their end don't support call and gprs at the same time
not really a phone thing
Thanks for the reply...I'm on the Orange network so I thought they would have been up to speed with technology incorporating call and data at the same time...
Same issue here.
I'm pretty sure that GPRS and voice calls can't work at the same time because of the 2G network, but thought at least the voice call would interrupt the data session.

That's my understanding. 3 & 3.5G allows voice and data at the same time.
but on 2G it's either GPRS or voice... that used to drive me crazy with my Prophet too
Ah, that makes sense...I usually turn off the 3G to extend battery life so that would be the reason I missed calls...may turn it back to 3G if I'm doing a session of browsing in future...
Cheers
even with my 2g himalaya I didn't have any problems with both calling and gprs
it was why gprs was interduced to replace the slower and older gsm dataconnection
which worked the same way as an analog modem which blocked of cause
of cause only class A gprs devices support that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Packet_Radio_Service#Hardware
but all these phones today are that
problem is that class A is required in both the phone and the operators network hardware
Try with RADIO ROM 1.16.
Problem with this rom is apparently solved.

Mobile data turns off while on call when on 4G network

I recently noticed that in my OP3T when someone calls, mobile data gets disconnected while on 4G network. When a call is initiated, 4G immediately changes to H+ and stays there for sometime(10 - 30 secs) and then disconnects completely. And when the call is disconnected, mobile data reconnects showing 4G.
The call and data are being used from the same sim (primary). To make sure that second sim is not interfering, I disabled the second sim and tested above scenario again and the behavior was same, data disconnects on call.
Is it an expected behavior or is there any issue with my mobile. As far as I know call and data cannot work together on 2G network, but on 3G/4G network it should work simultaneously as long as both data and call goes through same sim.
P.S. The 4G network I am on is not VoLTE. I am on OxygenOS 4.5.

If it's not VoLTE, it'll drop to a 2G signal (H symbol) or 3G (H+) while on a call, precisely because you don't have voice over LTE.
Yes, it's normal and will be fixed when operators start supporting VoLTE.
So yes, you're not the only one that's experiencing this.
