Do you mean zipped application?
First unpack .zip file on the computer.
You get .cab or .exe file.
Copy to the phone and click.

install total commander
open the zip by clicking on it
as you would a dir
copy out the cab
install it by double click

I don't think there is a phone that can use zipped files right out of the box, so you should first unpack the content of the zip, as you would do it on the PC.

pretty sure I've been opening ZIP files on my X1 via the default File Manager without any 3rd party software.
Although I'm guessing the original poster is getting confused between CAB and ZIP because Windows XP likes to treat them as the same.

I'v a question! Please help.
Well, if .zip file contain .cab or .exe then the procedure is lay down.
What in the case of zip files of theme or clock contain only .png file in that.
I mean, how to use such zips??
For more clarity to my question please check attachment enclosed & explain me, "In case I want to install that clock on my WM, how to proceed??"
Thanks in advance!!

You don't use the .zip, you have to copy those .png images into a specific folder.
Or maybe you downloaded the source images, i don't really know, i never installed a new clock theme or something.
Where do you have this file from?

how to install cab file?

Hey I am new, and I am wondering how do you install cab files? I downloaded the midlet manager and i extracted it on my pc, and i see a bunch of files but none of them are cab files, they are all unidentified, can some one help me please? much appreciated
thanks in advanced
Just copy and paste the zipped cabfile in your phone anywhere through Activesync, preferably 'My documents' folder and execute it there in the phone,it'll run and install all by itself.
Cheers!
when I extract the file,I dont see any cab files, So i just put the whole folder in my phone,I try clicking on the files and they wont open,I just get a message sayin
"There is no application associated with "00CAB10A",run application first then open this file from within the application
ok, for 'Midlet' here's how you do it as per the post in Midlet Manager by risidoro:-
------- HOW TO INSTALL ------------
- Download Risidoro's Intent MIDlet Manager version 11.1.7.1023
- extract the cab (inside the archive) somewhere in your PC (e.g. Desktop)
- copy to somewhere in your PocketPC (e.g. \storage card)
- in your PocketPC, navigate with File Manager to the cab and tap on it to install
- when asked, choose to install in the Device (and NOT in Storage Card!)
- reboot when asked
or read the thread :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286604
Cheers!

You are NOT supposed to unpack the CAB!!!
You must copy the cab (Risidoro_Intent_MIDlet_Manager_11.1.7.1023.cab) found inside the zip file from the thread that zabardast linked to your device and simple run it (one click via File Explorer or double-click with Total Commander)
as simple as that...
thank you so much
I got it installed
ok I have a htc droid eris and I can't find the file manager on my phone to get to the files on the sdcard. so I downloaded a file manager app and when I click on the .cab file it does not just install it asks what I want to do open with kind of thing. like browser and a bunch more things I have tried most of them and nothing is working. Is there something else I need to install a .cab file with this phone or wtf is my dumb butt doing wrong to not be able to install it.
Install .cab files to unlock sd card.
Hi, think ive messed up here... can someone help or confirm my balls up!
Ive been following this tutorial to flash my hd2 with an updatable Win.7 rom;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236027
Charging ahead, installed, had a few probs along the way but worked through them... got it installed and working!
Then, moving onto step two of my plan, a dual boot of Android from sd card... :S Do you know whats coming? After re-reading the install instructions I noticed the 'Unlock SDCard' a few steps before installing the rom. :S I have now learnt that Windows mobile 7 locks the sd card to the device and is un-usable in anything else, having already messed up an 8gb and a 16gb...!
Could anyone please tell me if it is possible to 'somehow' install the .cab files to unlock the sd card...? or anyone know of a way to decrypt the sd card?
"THE SD CARD IS UN-READABLE IN MY PC AND PHONE WITH WM6.5 STOCK ROM"
If I re-install the rom from the 'back to the future' tutorial (link above), the storage is available for use on the hd2, but still cannot be seen by my PC... making it hard to install .cab file or anything else!
Both my sd cards have effectivly been high-jacked by microsoft...!
Please help me liberate my GB's...!

Having a Hard time unzipping HTC home plug in

I am ignorant when it comes to tech.

Looks like you've extracted the CAB file.
You just have to copy the CAB file to your device and click it to install.
I tried again later by copying every file from what i downloaded for the plug in to on my computer and none of the programs wanted to install. I had no problem installing kaiser tweaks but this is just really irritating me. I know this may be a noob question but does the cab file look like?
no i dont think you quite understand there buddy. The file you downloaded that looks like a .zip file is actually a cab what you need to do is transfer the whole "zip" file over to your phone and open it in file explorer
It doesn't download as a zip, it downloads on to my computer as a bunch of seperate files. I put it into a zip file and then put it on my tilt. I'm sorry if i seem like i'm stupid, i'm just trying figure out how to do this. I downloaded from
http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=4618
is this a bad site to download from. If so please tell me of some other one.
just put that file into ur phone nd set it up thats it. dont zip or unzip it. you can tell if its a cab file if it has all these different files in there. or if it has ".cab" at the end of it (no quotes). the ".cab" file will look exactly like a zip file (it will have the same icon).
Thanks for the help!!!! Much appreciated

how do i install setup.xml files ?

i downlaoded "mUn BackGroundMode" from this site an like all other setup.xml
files i have no idea how to install them.
can someone help me on this one.
thanks
HD
Is the installer in the form of a .cab file? I'm willing to bet that you're opening the CAB file on your PC and looking inside it, which isn't the way to go here. You're supposed to copy the entire CAB file across onto your phone then launch the CAB file from your phone to run the installer.

Installing from PC - Where is CAB

Some software I install is done with an .exe file from the PC. It seems like these programs simply dump the CAB onto the phone for install. Does anyone know where this CAB is on the phone so I can copy it for re-install later?
Doug M.
Check the location you installed on your PC, the cab is usually there too
I have a quick question. I dowloaded Xtract that game. And I extracted the zip and i dont see a .cab file anywhere. Only a setup.xml and a few other files.
Sometimes it goes into a temp folder, it depends on the software. If I see it mention a location during the install process I check that folder for the cab file.

Ohh nevermind. So with CABviaActiveSync I just click it and it will install to my phone?
Sometimes you can open up the .exe file with 7-zip and just extract the cab file. Or, if you have sk tools, you can re-pack the program into a cab with their 'installed programs' tool.

Hi Doug!
You can find the .cab file(s) in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\XXXX
Where XXXX is the name of the software you have installed.
HTH
Thanks for the replies. This should speed-up some installs for me.

apks are just zip files. Set them to open with your archive manager or change the extension to .zip. All applications install their settings into /data/data/%PACKAGENAME% where %PACKAGENAME% is the Java-style package name of the app.
Ugh, no need to use the evil "R" word here. You're going to give us nightmares!
Each application stores its configurations/settings in its home directory in /data/data as pointed out by the previous poster. You might want to bone up on 'sqlite3' as most configuration settings tend to be stored in such databases.

I'am trying right now to find this confing files, thanks, I'll let you know if it's ok.
Note that depending on what you are trying to do, the config files may or may not be able to adjust the property you're after. No matter what, the program itself must support what you are trying to do (this goes for ALL OS's -- you simply can't change something that is irrelevant and expect it to do what you want) and more often than not, the ability to adjust that property would be presented by the program itself.
That is, of course, not to say that manually adjusting the config files is useless, because there IS a lot you can do directly from the config files.

Download APK2EXE and NSIS install system
Follow these steps to create your executable!
* Extract APK2EXE to a new directory
* Add your APK to the directory
* Doubleclick APK2EXE.NSI and edit the 3 lines containing information about your application.
* Right click the NSI file, and select 'Compile NSIS Script' - this will create your install EXE
* Done!
And it is a .apk to .exe converter !!!
Can anyone tell me why it doesn't work ? Many thanks
because your trying to run a Android application on Windows.
it's like saying I want to make this MAC application run on windows.. it just doesn't work..
I dont care what programs say.. Its not coded for Windows so it wont understand what the program does...
BTW you application you speak of is meant to install APK's FROM windows not TO windows
"Hot on the heels of my installAPK utility to let you install APKs from your Windows desktop, I now have another neat trick... which allows developers to distribute APKs as Windows EXE files instead."

shouldnt be too tough. just make a executable file that installs and configures adb, allows user to select apk or select a folder of apk's, create a .bat file that tells windows command prompt adb push the .apk to the sd card, then adb install /sdcard/nameofapk.apk
simple enough!
Can anyone tell me how to edit the app / extracted APK file to make the phone think it's a completely different app i.e. install it twice...
Not trying to cause trouble, I'm just looking to install an older version of an app as well as the updated version...

Thanks for replying, I've had a go with that and extracted / decompiled, compiled, signed, and that doesn't work, when I try to install the newly created apk it still tries to overwrite it...
I've watched the vid and read the comments but haven't worked it out yet... Can you point me in the right direction about which bit to edit?
i think you need apktool
Cool, I'll look into that... Any pointers on how to do it once I've got apktool?
command line usage, this tool unpak and repak
