.EXE files - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

how do i make .EXE files appear on the PROGRAMS folder on my diamond - do i always have to go to file explorer to open .exe file
help please

bump
anybody please

Creating a shortcut to the exe in the start menu might be enough, but I haven't tried it. Doing that will definitely work to show it in Start/Programs, but I don't know if it will show up in TF3D programs unless it's actually installed with a cab.

Use a file manager such as Total Comander and place the .exe you want in:
\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
Greets.

noob question...

I have an AT&T Tilt. I am a long time BBerry user who never once tweaked a device.
I would like to install several things including the HTC home and at some point TouchFlo.
Let's use my challenge with the HTC home files. Regardless of whether I use the 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 files I get the same result.
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and.....
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing.
Am I literally this stupid?

Hi,
I copy the cab files to a folder. Browse to the folder using file explorer, click on the setup file and..... I assume you copied the cab files to your device?
it opens up in Internet Explorer, seems to hang for several minutes and then...nothing. I dont quite get what you mean by it opens up in Internet Explorer? Did you click on the cab file? It is not suppose to open up in IE. Please be more specific..
Cheers
Here's what I have
The folder for the HTC Home Screen has a file called _setup.xml and around 100 files.
I click on the _setup.xml file and it opens in IE. Nothing happens. There is no .cab file in the folder.
Mike O.
You unpacked the CAB file somehow (likely on your PC before transfering). Don't do that. Move the CAB file to your phone, not its contents. When you open a CAB file, it looks to the XML file for installation instructions. If you open the XML file, it thinks you want to read it, so it opens PIE.
So don't unpack CABs.

How do I add .exe files to my All Programs list?

I downloaded a program called Flashlight, and I wanted to know how I could get it onto my all programs list, since it came as an .exe rather than a cab. Thanks in advance!

Either move the file to \Windows\Start Menu\Programs or Create a shortcut to the exe (Copy the file in File Explorer and Choose Paste Shortcut) there.

Ah! That did the trick. Thank you very much
doesn't work with GpsCompass
I installed a program called GpaCompass that doesn't show up in my win/startmenu/programs, so I copied and pasted the .exe there, I tried to cut/paste the .exe there, still no go. it gives me an alarm about microsoft.net, but i have 3.5 installed. I've tried using 2.0 as default AND 3.5 as default. not sure what to do. I'll try to include screenshot of error msg.

Don't copy (or cut!) and paste the exe to your Startmenu/Programs folder. Instead you should copy and paste a SHORTCUT to the exe in your Starmenu/Programs folder. By pasting the exe file itself into your folder it is trying to execute from that folder when other files that it may need are in the installation directory somewhere else on your device.
So first, cut and paste the .exe back to where it was originally located. Next copy the exe and "Paste as shortcut" into your Startmenu/Programs folder
Thanks lots
@ Rumbal,
worked beautifully, thanks a lot! I apparently misunderstood other posts I had read about doing this. And , call me an idiot, but somehow completely overlooked "paste as shortcut", and only saw "paste".
Thanks
woot!
Thanks!
This is something I just learned as well. Now I'm going to go ahead and make all the shortcuts I want!
It took a while, but I didn't want to ASK and get flamed for it. Anyway, these forms are tens of thousands of posts deep....I knew the answer was here

Amazing trick...this worked without troubles, and it can be set manually mostly for portable applications which does not install in Program Files folder.
I just did a trick with portable Dreamweaver by simply copying the portable folder to the Program Files, and then copied and pasted Dreamweaver.exe shortcut in Star Menu\Programs folder....worked fine.
Thanx for ur tips...

most installations create cabs

Whenever I install a program it appears to open a cab on my kaiser.
Rather than running the installers all the time on my laptop, is there a way to find those cabs and just move them to my storage card so I can install them if I am away from my laptop?
go to the installation folder on ur desktop and the cab would be in a folder in there. usually the folder marked 'installation files' or 'resources'..
just look for the cab file.
found some..
but not most ...
Very odd..
If you mean that when you run a .exe on your laptop to install a program on your kaiser, then it is possible to sometimes extract the cabs from the .exe or installer. A program called Universal Extractor can extract over 50 types of files including most installers. It is free, and supports many languages. It even adds an entry to the context menu, so you can right click nearly any file. It will then try to find the appropriate extracting tool, and then if it succeeds, it will place the files in a folder in the same directory as the original file. Try this, it has worked very well for me.

If it helps, I tend to find most of them are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync

I have a HTC Fuze and CAB file not working.

I have a HTC fuze from att and I m trying to install application that have a .cab ext but no respond when I unzip and copy it to my phone. It direct me to the opera website. What shall I do?
I just bought an att HTC and I want to change the today screen and batter meter to %. Everytime i download a .cab file. i tried both zipping it and putting it on the phone and leaving it unzipped and putting it on the phone but everytime i file search for the .cab file it doesnt even show up on my device. How can i do this? thanks for the help!!!!
thanks
.cab installation...
If the cab is zipped (ie. it has .zip / .rar extension), unzip it on your desktop. If you're not sure if the file is actually a .cab file, right click and select 'Properties' - you can then see the actual extension and file type.
Copy the .cab to your device. Place it somewhere obvious, so you can find it easily (ie. the root of Internal Storage). Then on your device, locate the file and tap on it to install it. If it doesn't install this way, it's either not a .cab, or it's not designed for your device

Installing from PC - Where is CAB

Some software I install is done with an .exe file from the PC. It seems like these programs simply dump the CAB onto the phone for install. Does anyone know where this CAB is on the phone so I can copy it for re-install later?
Doug M.
Check the location you installed on your PC, the cab is usually there too
I have a quick question. I dowloaded Xtract that game. And I extracted the zip and i dont see a .cab file anywhere. Only a setup.xml and a few other files.
Sometimes it goes into a temp folder, it depends on the software. If I see it mention a location during the install process I check that folder for the cab file.

Ohh nevermind. So with CABviaActiveSync I just click it and it will install to my phone?
Sometimes you can open up the .exe file with 7-zip and just extract the cab file. Or, if you have sk tools, you can re-pack the program into a cab with their 'installed programs' tool.

Hi Doug!
You can find the .cab file(s) in C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\XXXX
Where XXXX is the name of the software you have installed.
HTH
Thanks for the replies. This should speed-up some installs for me.
