Screen turns on while charging (and stays on) - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I charge my phone each night, and each night the screen turns itself on, so I turn it off and later it turns back on, so I turn it off, then later it turns back on, so I turn it off, then it's time to get up... so I turn it on
I'm not getting calls in the night, data streams, messages... anything that should activate the phone. It just seems to like to turn the screen on.
Anyone else? Can I do something about it?
Thanks

I am assuming you are charging it with the USB plugged to the computer?
Not sure if it was designed to be like that, or a bug in the firmware, or a design flaw, it seems like when plugged to the computer this would happen.
Haven't really tested it out myself tho. (but the screen doesn't seem to turn on when plugged to the wall charger, although I can't verify yet )

The screen does not turn off when charging using the wall charger.

even if the option is checked, the backlight will still be turned on. It will just dim to minimum level when the time is reached.

Yep there are four settings in that window that will help solve this problem

The manual workaround of clicking the power button to turn off the screen works for me. You might have installed software on your x1 that activates the screen every so often?

no, if you checked, it'll be turned off.

now a slight OOT, but when X1 playback musics it is also always turn on the screen, is there a fix for that?

Have you tried it on an X1? What ROM version are you using? I have tried it using "GENERIC_UK" rom
Here's my setting at "Setting" > "System" > "Power" > "Advanced" (during charging with USB cable through a PC):
On battery power:
Turn off backlight if device is not used for [ 30 sec ]
Turn off device if not used for [ 1 min ]
On external power:
Turn off backlight if device is not used for [ 1 min ]
Turn off device if not used for [ 2 min ]
Result:backlight dim (but still on) after 1 min, and keeps in dim status afterward (say 5 hours)... NEVER TURN OFF...

actually I did some testing before, that even with the options checked to turn off device on external power, when it is plugged to a computer it will not actually turn off the device, but this option will turn off the device when the external power source is the AC power adapter.
Again perhaps a design flow or bug (someone was saying it could be by design so that when say transferring a file from the computer it won't cut off), who knows?

on external power, the screen will dim, but not switch off. To off it, just press the power on/off button. the X1 will continue to be charged though.

To manually press the power on/off everytime is very inconvinent. You cannot press it at once coz it will auto wake up during the start of sync process. You have to wait for about 2 seconds before pressing the power off button to turn the backlight off...
Moreover, when there is a phone call/SMS the backlight turns on again and you have to press the power off again... I would rather like the backlight to turn COMPLETELY off as the option at Power settings imply (which is the behaviour of my Tytn)...

Bumping this thread up as it has the exact same unresolved issue as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561832 but the title is better and it clearly states that all the standard options have been tried.

Yep, I've had 5 different WinMo devices since '05 and they all worked as expected except the X1. All my other devices obeyed the settings you set in the Power tab, but not the X1...
I'd very much like the screen to auto-off if I tell it to while on USB power. It's not only wasting power, but it wakes me up and gets me fumbling for the tiny power button at 2 in the morning. Any fix would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter

----------------------------------
ummm, 2 seconds is very inconvenient???? darn, are you an air traffic control cadet? btw its not the sync process you wait for, its the usb connection (like any usb drive) that must be established
i plug mine in, then hit the power button, thats it... be honest with ya, i cant see whats the problem of pressing the power button after plugging in the cord...i really cant see it, i would understand if there was a case that the power button was not turning off the screen...i guess its just me, but i dont see the fuss

For me personally I'm not syncing, I'm using it plugged into the wall, and any time I hit any control the screen turns on and has to be manually turned off. It even seems to turn on randomly after I did turn it off. It'd be great if there was some fix for this...

can you try start - settings - system tab - keylock? make sure that the first option is checked "wake up device by pressing the power button"...that should solve the waking up part anytime you hit any control...

Thanks for your reply joe, the only problem is I do want it to wake if I hit a button - otherwise the button has no effect. So if I'm listening to an MP3 at 2am and I've pressed the power button to turn off the display, if I want to stop the MP3 playback I hit the 'center' button twice, once to wake the device and once to stop playback. Or I might hit the up/down toggle to change the volume or the right/left toggle to fast-forward/rewind. I like the screen coming up in all these cases - but after a minute or so I'd also like the screen to turn off, as it does when on battery mode and on any other WM device I've used.
Having to hit the power button again after every action, or in your case before and after - unfortunately that is not user friendly... I have all the settings in the Power menu set as I want them with "On External Power: turn off backlight if device is not used for: 1 minute" checked and set - It would be great if there was some way to find out what Sony did to break this core Windows Mobile functionality and if there is some way to fix it...
Thanks,
Peter

Registry Fix Created
Ok, I think I have a fix for this. I googled around some more and found that this might be an HTC problem more than an SE one. There were various registry keys people suggested to try to fix the 'backlight problem' - which may or may not be related. None of those suggestions seemed to work, but I kept changing keys myself and eventually found this seemed to do the trick.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\ACUserIdle: 120
I confirmed that changing this value affects the amount of time before my X1's screen turns off - but my MP3s still play with the screen off and my phone wakes on receipt of a new call. This value is the # of seconds before the screen turns itself off (in this case 2 minutes). You do need to soft reset for the change to take effect.
This doesn't seem to be posted anywhere else that I've found doing this to fix this issue issue - I changed a few other registry keys as well that might be enabling this fix. So anyone with this problem, please do give this a try and if it doesn't work I'll post the other keys I changed as well - and if it does then post to say so and we're good
Peter
Update: I tested it also while hooked up to the computer and it does work with the phone accessible through active sync with the screen off and the battery charging (faster now that it isn't competing with the screen for power, except for the 2 minutes before it times out). If I want to use it I just click a button and the screen stays on till I leave it alone for 2 mins and it remains off. Get a call or a message and the screen goes on for 2 minutes and then off - Exact same behaviour on AC and USB - exactly the behaviour I wanted

spot on!!!

Just wanted to confirm that this is spot on. I had an issue with the screen dimming but not turning off when plugged in or on battery. I modified the following and all is well.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\BattUserIdle: 20

Not turning off (Standby) after no activity ?

Hi everyone,
I just switched from the Touch to the Kaiser and have a problem with the device not going into powersave mode. I am NOT talking about the backlight settings but the power settings that turns off the device after x min of inactivity. The device never turns off for some reason.
This was working fine on the Touch. Is this a common problem on the Kaiser ?
Thanks

You don't mention what settings you have it set to. When you tap the battery icon (top bar) and then "advanced", are there time limits set?
If there are - untick the boxes and exit the screen "OK"
Then return to the screen and tick the boxes again and enter time limits exit with "OK"
Personally I always turn to standby manually. WM5/6 often seems to prefer this. WM5 in particular has a habit of not coming out of standby if it goes to standby by itself. The Kaiser seems MUCH more tolerant of this but I just got the habit of doing it manually.
Mike
My backlight settings are not set and my Power settings are as follows:
Turn off device if not used for "1 min" is SET for batt power and NOT SET for external power.
I will try unchecking everything and rechecking to see if that helps.
Thanks,
BTW, TouchFlo scrolling is horrible on the Kaiser compared to the Touch especially in the Internet browser. Surprising for a device with so much more memory and horsepower over the Touch...
i had a same problem with my kaiser... Try to hard reset u phone after hard reset you wont see any problem...
Thanks for the suggestions..
I did a hard reset and the problem remains. It is very strange because if I manually power of the phone it does wake up when I call comes in bit stays on after that.
During a call however the screen goes off !!!
I did the recommended reg hack to stop the screen from blacking out during a call but it still does it.
Has there been any updates to the original (HTC) firmware since release ?
Thanks again.
check this:
\HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\EnableFastDormantDisplayDuringCall
from "1" to "0" will leave the screen on long enough for voicemail use (probably falling back to the backlight/power settings)...

Tilt not turning off when connected to PC

I keep my Tilt connected to a PC all the time when I am not using it.... To charge it, and transfer files etc.
The problem is that it never appears to turn off when connected, specifically the screen. Now I don't know if phone screens really suffer from any type of "burn-in", but I'm sure there is some type of limited life on the screens.
I have set the Start > Settings > System > Power > Advanced to turn off the device on external power after a couple of minutes, but it does not appear to do anything.
The settings in Start > Settings > System > Backlight > External Power does seem to work. I set it to turn off backlight after 30 seconds and it does.
I often hit the power button on the phone to turn it to standby when I go to sleep but the screen is often on again when I get to it. It think if it gets a call it might wake the screen, and never shut back off.
How can I ensure that the screen stays off (or powers off after activity) while the device is connected to the PC?
thx
Well there is a light in there that can burn out. Um, what happens if you hit that side button that turns that light off? Works for me when my preciouses is blugged into my comp.
the problem with pushing power button when connected to computer...it turns the screen off, but also breaks the connection to Active Sync for some reason..it charges the phone but activesync connection goes down.
but im a newb on the tilt so there might be an option to enable active sync with display off.

That works, but the problem is if someone calls (or maybe if some other notification comes in...SMS, email, calendar appointment) it lights back up and stays on.
I'm not concerned with ActiveSync disconnecting, I just want to plug it into my computer to leave charging and I would rather not power the device ALL the way down.
-thx
I guess I need to pay more attention to mine.

There are programs that you can install that will shut off your screen but leave the rest of the device active. I wouldn't worry about the screen burning though. My Wizard was on like that all the time for over a year (stupid WM6 bug prevented you from turning the phone off if it was plugged in to USB), and my screen never showed any adverse effects.
As long as your backlight goes off, you will be fine.

EDGE & 3G automatically turn on? Help

My tilt's EDGE and 3G connection automatically turn on, sometimes when i wake up, it's on for 9 hours, why is that? and i can't find a way to fix it. And when i put the tilt away for a few min, the screen will automatically shut down to save on energy, and i will have to press the POWER button once to have the screen back up. Can we change this setting? it is not very handy. thanks for the help. i am a noob.

I had the same problem,
Disabled push email.
Problem went away.
I have a similar problem. Is there a way to see what application is opening the data connection. I had email set to download once a day, so it was not my email. Can't think what else it may be...

How do you check message?

Hi, please forgive me for asking such a dumb question. I imagine my problem is not that uncommon. By default, the phone turns off back light if I don't touch any key for 30 seconds (feels like shorter than that). Anyway, I dial in to check my voicemail. Due to the length of the message, the back light turns off. It looks like there is no key other than the power button can bring the screen back. Sometimes, I have to press the power button a couple of times before the screen comes back, then when I try to delete the message (by pressing 7) sometimes I don't even see the keypad any more. It's just a bit of hassle. Can you tell me how you would do it?
thanks very much!
I'm not sure if there's an option for the phone not to switch the backlight off and/or go to sleep while in a phone call.
If you want to control the duration before the phone switches off the backlight or goes to sleep, you will have to change the backlight or power settings ujnder Settings -> System.
didn't know when and how it was set at 10 sec backlight

Powering X1i through USB -- any hacks to do the following...

Hi all,
I frequently charge my X1i through USB. There are 2 problems with this method, however.
1) The device goes into USB drive mode, disabling my SD card apps (I keep them on SD card AT ALL TIMES due to frequent backups/restores)
2) Screen does not turn off! while connected to computer! The screen only dims, but does not turn off.
WITHOUT resorting to a) plugging into wall outlet b) connecting to Activesync, is there any to fix these behaviors?
Thanks!
just let it go into activesync mode, that way you can still access your files on your phone and micro sd card from both your pc and phone. And if you dont like the screen not turning off, they just change the settings or just press the power button, to shut off the display.
I know about the power setting, but when your computer is connected to the computer via USB, it refuses to turn off the screen (only dims it)
what? one simple button press and the screen is off. the device is still visible to the pc. I do it all the time - r3a generic uk rom.
in power options u can set after what time it disables screen... default is never

Weird. When I'm connected to Pc, it dims the screen, it does not shut it off. Also, it does NOT auto-shut of screen after the 2 minutes specific in the Power options
You can also use "safely remove devices" to disconnect the data connection from the phone, it'll still charge.
There's nothing we can do AUTO. But like said before, a simple pression on the power button will do it, or you can use My Mobiler and press F11 on your PC.
