first time? first time I used my gps had to wait near 1hour to get the fix. So have a seat and wait

There is a QuickGPS application you should run first and set up a schedule. What is does is download the satellite positions relative to your position, so that you are able to get a fix faster.
When I'm using Google Maps I usually get a fix within 10 seconds. Haven't tried Wayfinder or any other program though.

Sorry... Another GPS / Google Maps Question

I've read so many posts, you'd think I could get this to work.
I've run the QuickGPS that comes w/ my AT&T Tilt. It shows a download time and that it's valid for a little over 6 days from now.
When I run Google Maps, and try Track Location, I get the standard error message that says my GPS receiver is not responding.
Anyone have any thoughts/pointers?
thx
Robert
did you go into settings and change the GPS settings?
Wait. I just found another thread that says I need to run something besides QuickGPS to get Google Maps to work.
I'm confused. I need to run (i) QuickGPS, (ii) another application (such as GPS Test or GPS Viewer), AND (iii) google maps?
Or, do I just need to run (ii) and (III)?
thx

Yes. ONe of the first things I did.
Com 4, 4800 baud.

In theory, it should work with only (i) and (iii). However, in practice, it seems people (including me) only have success if you do (i), (ii), and (iii).
E.g. Run something like Windows Live, get the Satellite fix, then run Google Maps. I know its cumbersome, but it seems that Google Maps' tolerance for waiting for a sat signal is too short. And since all other progs work with the GPS without such actions, I'd say its a Google Maps issue, not a Kaiser one.
I have never had a problem?
I feel like i am missing something...I have Tom Tom, and google maps, and have never done anything except run them? Works flawlessly for me, are you guys running htc rom?

I've seen elsewhere that some people that have changed their GPS settings on the Kaiser/Tilt have needed to hard-reset to get the GPS to work again.
So, I would suggest doing a hard-reset and be sure to just not touch any GPS settings following that.
You DON'T need to run any other 3rd party apps to enable your GPS or anything of that sort. Just install Google Maps and go outside to test it. It could take up to a minute to get a signal. It's also possible you might get the error you previously mentioned, the first time you open Google Maps. Just click "retry", and that should do it.
Give that a shot and report back.
I used TomTom last night (I downloaded the free Chicago map but don't live anywhere near Chicago) and it truly is a slick app.
BUT
I use Windows Live all the time with it and am very very impressed how it works. I don't have the Google app loaded so can't comment on it specifically.
But I was having issues with QuickGPS and had to hard reset to fix it.
-Mc
It all depends on your location and how quick your unit finds the satellites. GOogle Maps has a very short timeout allowance. So, yes, sometimes, retrying over and over will work. Sometimes not. Running another program that has a higher timeout tolerance helps in those situations. E.g. I was in Portland this week and with the heavy cloud cover and rain, it took about 2.5 min for it to get a fix. Thus Google kept timing out. So, I switched to Live which waited and waited and waited, and then when it had the fix, worked nicely. I could then stop Live and switch to GoogleMaps and it would work nicely.
Yes, it is a problem with Google Maps apparently
It has a very short timeout to get satellite fix.
This is getting frustrating. Maybe I'm just an idiot. I installed Windows Live and configured it to Com 4. I then had Live "center on GPS" and instead of Palo Alto where I am now, it shows me in Oakland. When I switch to Google Maps, I still get the timeout error.
Arrrgh.
Guess I should try GPS Viewer or something instead of Windows Live?
Robert
Yes, try GPS Viewer to see the number of sats you are receiving.

Well. Downloaded GPS Test (not GPS Viewer) and it shows about 3 satellites (usually 2 are green, 1 yellow). At the minimum, I have one yellow bar. I'm on the 6th floor with a large window that I can see a HUGE amount of sky out of. So I'm kind of disappointed. (Well, now I show no satellites).
It's been indicating "GPS Starting up" for over 3 minutes.
Google Maps still won't get GPS to work
Anyone have any idea what's going on?
Robert
i had alot of google map problems also. after setting to com 4 and 4800 baud go outside and try the track location feature. also it helps if its not too cloudy. Most of the times I was testing it I was inside the house which didnt work.
FYI. GPS Viewer has the following error on my device:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
Robert
... and where do I find GPS Viewer? As far as I can tell, it is not on my phone..?
You need to download it, search the forum. there is a link to the site/file somewhere
found another cool one, free http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/
Just a followup. I downloaded GPSViewer from another site. It works. And now Google Maps works.
Evidently GPS Test just wasn't enough by itself.
Thanks all.
Robert
Strangely I have the opposite problem, GPSViewer can never get a satellite lock, I can leave it for minutes and nothing, but load up Google Maps and within seconds... there I am.... :-D

GPS?

It doesn't work with any application. Do i have to turn on the internal gps somehow?

Nav4all, tomtom, google, and yes it blinks orange.
Same problem here...I did run quickgps and downloaded the recent update...still nothing

Go to this page and see the link for external mirror 1. use it to download GPS TEST:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/GPS-Test-Download-34335.html
or get it here:
http://classic.pocketgear.com/softw...ssociateid=1224
When you have installed it, run it and it will auto scan the ports to find the GPS receiver. Make note of the port number - that's the one you'll need for your other applications (like tomtom etc). Make sure you have a clear view of the sky when running it and give it PLENTY time to achieve a first time fix.
By the way if you have ever used the "External GPS" on the Kaiser then you may have altered some settings that can stop GPS working. Unfortunately only a hard reset will cure this. BUT, try the above first. If GPS test can get satellites then so will other applications.
This little application GPS Test is also useful to run before things like Google Maps that some folks have problems with.

Ok. If GPS test works and finds sats then, you have an incorrect port set on the other applications. From GPS Test see what port it has found the GPS on. Then in tomtom say, use "other nmea device" or "internal GPS" whichever option it has in the "configure" menu and set the port to the one noted from GPS test.
Fact is that if GPS test finds sats then everything is working and its just getting the link between the GPS and the nav software that needs fixing.
Mike
I just had to leave my house and try it on the road. Now it works everywhere. YEAH!!!!!!!!!
THANKS GUYS (mikechannon) !!!!!!!!!!
this works, but why do we need to run gps test before any gsp app? is there not a reg key that will be able to fix it?

I used to have the same exact problem...Google Maps just gives up if it doesn't find a fix right away. TomTom does finally get a lock without GPS Test, but it takes less time if you have GPS Test running beforehand.
I had the same problem .. GPS would not work with Google, MSN live. Downloaded GPS test and still nothing. I finally did a "hard" reset (painful, but I did have everything backed up on my PC with Active Sync).
After the hard reset GPS worked GREAT! I must have messed up a setting trying to get it to work. GPS test now reports that the GPS is active on COM4, 9600 baud.

You don't have to run it before every GPS application. Some folks find Google Maps benefits from doing this but I only suggested running the GPS test app to establish which port was being used. Even with Google maps you may find on subsequent occasions you do not need to run an app like GPS Test first.

does anyone else have the problem where tom tom doesn't show the correct position it always thinks i am about 20 - 50 meters to the left of my real position.
I seem to be on fields an awful lot or 2 - 3 street over in city centres.

I don't have that problem - even when I have few fixed satellites. However I did read a report recently where someone routinely had the arrow showing 200mtrs away from his position. Sorry to say it was only after a Hard Reset that the problem vanished.
As a side issue. I have noticed with tomtom and any other GPS software -
If you start the GPS software in an area with no or poor GPS signal, then it will take FAR longer to get a fix EVEN when you go into a clear sky area.. If however when you start the GPS software in a good open sky area then it will fix much more quickly.
The moral of this story - don't start the GPS when you are inside a thick walled building - wait until you get outside first. I'mguessing that starting in an area with a very weak signal sends it searching in all the wrong areas for satellites and it will then take a long time to find them even when you get outside. (This is true, I have noticed with all GPS systems I've used not just the Kaiser.
Mike
FYI, I have found that Map4PDA breaks the GPS. I believe it changes the baud rate to 57600, which is incorrect (it should be 9600). The only way to fix it I have found is to Hard reset and not install Map4PDA.
TomTom, Micrsoft Live Search (with Speach), & Google Maps work great. Features set in that order.
PS that GPS test tool works GREAT. Thanks for the heads up.

How long does it take you to "seek GPS satelites" ?

Mine can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 10+ minutes.. in the same area (where I know i can get 6+ satelites). =/
wow
it is a custom rom? use quickGPS, run then hit the download button then use which ever GPS software you want to use. it helps a lot.
Yeah mine takes forever the first time it seems like but once I've found satelites it doesn't take as long that day or the next.
ah that might be it.. because i know I had quickGPS download stuff for me previously... and now it didnt.. so ill download the file and see how it goes.. thx for ur help
Will quick gps need to be working at the background or could I just close it after I download and start my gps program? Thanks
Just use QuickGPS, hit download and you can quit QuickGPS.
Between 10 and 120 seconds, usually, even when updated with QuickGPS.
Mine usually takes about 30 seconds to get its fix.
Note: I always keep QuickGPS up-to-date
5/15 secs.
Depends on radio rom probably also. Last time I poked at it, 1.27.15.32 was the slowest.
my gps takes almost forever to get a sat fix. and my quickgps would always give me a cannot download message everytime i try to download... anyone know the issue?
I have my QuickGPS set to auto download when it needs to, so as long as I'm not in a building with a steel roof I can usually get a GPS lock in under 10 seconds.

Apparently mine too =(
I have just started playing with Destinator 7 last night. I was indoors and was not able to get signal in a 10 minute period before quitting the program (it was also cloudy out side too).
I Used to have Earthcomber. That took about 3 minutes indoors but I Finally got my GPS Icon Green. Never tried it outside, cause There are no maps of mexico with Earthcomber yet.
Do some programs get manage the reception better than others? Or is it pretty much equal?
Just using TomTom i can get a fix in about 20 secs. I don't even have to run Quick GPS.

Try google maps. When you open Google Maps click on the menu. There is an option called "Use GPS". Select that line and it will use the GPS antenna to locate you.

Thanks for the tip, google maps was one of the first map softwares I installed and I really enjoyed it.
Actually I take back what I said on my last post. I didn't realize how much impact on GPS reception is caused by being indoors (which was where I played a little with Destinator right after installing it earlier today).
When I had to go to class, just for kicks, I got the directions for my house to my university routed, and I got 8 sat reception on a cloudy rainy day in 15 maybe 20 seconds. The precision and drections are outstanding. I hear Destinator is bad, I did not find it bad at all. I also purchased Igo, which I will try tomorrow. I had so much fun with my first real GPS experience XD.
i run quick GPS then i run GPStool to get a good signal...then i run googlemaps and get a signal in 5secs.
Is this a tool i must download or is this build in tomtom?
THe tomtom version i have is 6.020.

Problem in getting Garmin XT to work on my Kaiser

Hallo All Gurus,
I'm trying out Garmin Mobile XT for WindowsMobile V4.20.50w with my TyTnII using Malsing's map (named as gmapsupp). I followed all recommended installation procedures installed Garmin XT and mailsing map in SD card \Garmin. But when I execute Garmin XT, I couldn't get it work and I noticed:-
a) when I'm at "GPS Info", it keep showing me "Acquiring Satellities"
b) In view map mode" keep showing "Searching for Satellites"
c) When I keyed in a address and hit GO or "Where Am I", it keep showing "Awaiting Better GPS Accuracy"...
I also noticed my GPS signal level only show 1 small bar and "GPS info" mode showed me only 1-2 satellite icon on the circle.. I never able to get 5 bars..
Tried many days and still can't get it works...
Before I use Garmin, my MapKing works fine...
Any guru can show me anything I missed out...?
Thanks in advance...

yes, thats it, also u can run quickgps before launching garmin.
Thanks you guys for all advise.. True that I have difficulties in acquiring satellites due to bad weather, very thick cloud.. I managed to get through successfully once yesterday evening.. But, when I tried this morning, again it start "Awaiting for GPS accuracy"...
Need your further advice:-
a) When compare to my friend's HTC Diamond, he can obtain GPS much faster, almost within 1-2 mins.
Do I need to get Quick GPS activated every time I use garmin XT?
b) Why those Satellites that I searched all lost after I closed the garmin?
c) I just upgrade to WM6.1, is this one of the factor?
Appreciate any further kind advice please.

As far as i know a different hard spl will not help i have used 3 differnt hard spl's and it has never affected me. a new radio will help this is were your problem will be! quick gps only needs to be run once a week make sure you dont have ur ip dummied to another country as this will make it useless. click download when connected to wifi or gprs/hsdpa if your lucky enough to be happy and afford to pay for your internet. it should get you a file that lasts for 6days 23 hours. wm6.1 has nothing to do with it. you will not get a fix inside your house flat shed etc you need to be out side or in a car (with phone on dashboard) so basicly the phone needs a clear view of sky. based on what you have said i would change my radio its all in the wiki I cannot recommend one to you as i am in the UK and different one's work better in different places. so try a few and see what works best. garmin forgets the satilites it connected to last time because you turned ur gps reciver of so it isnt connected to them and unless you restart garmin straight away the satalites are not in the same place in the sky so it has to relocate them(this is the same for every one)

Getting GPS to work on tilt?

I've been trying to figure out how to get the GPS to work on the tilt, but every time i try to use the gps it won't find any satellites. Am I doing something wrong or is there a chance my tilt doesn't support it?

yes. i've tried it in every situation and it never finds a satellite. i am using quickgps also. i also tried gps gate.. never finds a satellite
questions
What radio/rom are you running? how are you accessing GPS? my initial troubles were because google maps timed out before the gps was fully active. hand down a little more info and maybe i can help.
.....so many GPS issues lately the tilt does of course support GPS but it just takes a really long time to get a GPS lock try using GPSTest and see if that works if not then your GPS is probably malfunctioning.
I'm not sure if this helps a whole lot, but I believe I recall reading that the Kaiser GPS will not work as well if the kaiser is moving under one mile per hour. And being outdoors never hurt. Maybe you could try moving around. Or a different radio (I think)? As far as I'm concerned, the GPS on my device is not even suitable for regular use because of the delay.
Dave
I have found that unless you use the GPS almost daily, it takes longer to lock on the longer it has been since it was last successfully used... The QUICK GPS doesn;t seem to work for me at all in solving this problem.. Sometimes (rarely) it can take upto 20 min to get a fix.. usually it is about 1 to 2 min though... I also hae found it works best when you get a fix when you are moving.... I am not sure what GPS program you are using, I use TomTom myself... I have this little app that toggles the GPS on and off... You mgith want to try that.. I will attach it in this message.. I also found that you should NEVER use the GPS indoors as it seems to make it take a LOT longer next tiem you use it.. onyl have it on when you have a clear view of the sky..
I use my TomTom almost DAILY and rarely have a problem.. No delay when drivign around and it gives great directions... I have also found sometimes if I do have a problem connecting.. I will elave it on for 10 min or so.. then exit out of TomTom (and turn off the GPS Toggle) then turn it right back on.. Sometimes I have an INSTANT lock... If that does nto work... try a soft reset.. I have found tha to help sometimes as well...
