How do you download zip files? - G1 Apps and Games

It seems like Android File Manager from the marketplace supports zip files, but I can't figure out a way to actually download them with either Chrome lite or Opera mini. Anyone know of a way or is it impossible for the time being?

Same here al also having that problem

How to update opera?

Hello all,
I have opera 9.5 build 1522 (Dutch) on my Diamond but it has
problems with some websites .
Can anyone point me in the right direction how to update
it to the most recent version? I don't mind if it is in English
instead of Dutch.
Are there any special things to consider?
you need
First : completely stop Opera processes. Even If it's not running from the task bar, processes might be running. If so it won't allow file copy
Ti achieve this I use task manager.
Then get the update for Opera on the XDA site.
Most of the time you have a zip file with 3 files
Copy those 3 in you touch "windows" directory
The thing is done !
Sorry, which xda site do you mean exactly?

The file i downloaded was .apk
But i just dont know what to do with it...
sorry, let me clearify... the file you download is called "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk.jar"... this does no good on the phone to install so i decompressed it so now its "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk"... yet this is a folder now and not a file.apk.... so putting it on the sd and using an app installer doesnt do much when its a folder with the name only saying .apk... i need a file.apk so i can use an app installer, right? or am i way off? Think maybe because i use a mac has anything to do with it??? or does it need to be a dev phone? my phone isnt "unlocked," and im running rc33
but to answer your question Rescue7 if you do have a the file "com.isaacwaller.youtubedownloader.apk" and not a folder like i have... all you need to do is put it onto your sd card, then run an app installer. if you use linda file manager it will give you an option... if not use the application installer that you can download via the market

Hmm well I'm using a PC. And I don't have a dev phone, or an unlocked phone. Just a regular G1. Well why dont u just give it a try? maybe it'll work??
JLO: you're either going to have to download it using firefox or use right click + save as in safari, otherwise osx think's a zip folder and tries to decompress it as it downloads, which results in the .jar file.
Here is your application
GO TO THIS WEBSITE AND IT IS THERE. AND TELL OTHER PEOPLE CAUSE I WANT TO SHARE THIS APP WITH OTHERS CAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5415
IN ORDER TO PUT IT ON YOUR PHONE YOU WILL NEED TO USE APPMANAGER WHICH IS FREE FROM THE ANDROID MARKET.
http://allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5417
TRY IT OUT AND BE SURE TO SPREAD THE NEWS THAT IT IS FREE FOR DOWNLOAD AT THE FIRST LINK FOR ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE PROGRAM.
solution
just go to keepvid.com from your phone to download youtube videos onto your phone from your phone.
simply just go to the video you want to download on the browser then hit menu then go to url the url is now highlighted on ur phone copy it by using (hold down menu button then press C on your keyboard) not the big menu button on the outside of the phone the button next to the Z key on the keyboard then paste the link to keepvid.com using (menu then V) for paste then download the mp4 walla use a video player to play the video u just got from youtube

I just thought I'd point out that you don't have to use firefox or save as.
Just delete the jar off the end of the filename. It does this when downloading themes also. So far, I haven't had any issues just deleting the .jar.

Pulled from Marketplace. The developer still offers it for download here:
http://www.siriusapplications.com/ytd/
Ooops... seems it isn't available for DL on the website either. It was a free app, so I can just post my backed up apk file in here when I get home tonight.

Browser hax to allow download of any file

I believe I saw it on here before but tried searching and could not find anything. Does anybody have the settings for it? The second question is, why don't the rom builders put this feature in by default?
Becuase u can get apps in the market to do it for u. Download astro from the market, it allows you to dwnload any file. Check it out its great!
Thanks, I even had Astro on my phone before I started flashing all the time and totally forgot. Even though, i wasn't aware it allowed this either.

Froyo does not support apk downloads?

When I try to download an apk from a different website, I get an error saying this file is not supported. Yes I have the non market installation checked.
If the website doesn't send the correct headers with the file them the phone doesn't realise it's an APK. Same happened on 2.1 normally on sites with download redirects.
Install astro to enable downloading apk files

Last I knewit was taken from the market. Just Google it
That sucks I'll just have to wait till tomorrow, no pc.
Here it is if you dont want to look for it.
astro worked perfectly, thanks for the tip

[Q] File support in browser (and elsewhere)

The stock FroYo browser seems to have some filetype restrictions giving the error
Cannot download. The content is not supported on the phone

when downloading .zip and .doc files, and there are probably others that I haven't encountered yet.
Some elementary googling has led me to either 'AndroZip' or 'Download All Files' however I can't dissuade myself from believing that a lower-level solution, such as a flashable zip or something along those lines, exists somewhere. Does it? If not, what's the best way for dealing with this?
Have you tried other browsers to download these files?

Just grab Astro file manger. That will fix it up. Or use Firefox as it accepts all downloads

Would you happen to know what's causing this?
Just noticed it's not taking .apk either.

It is because the browser doesnt know what to do with the files. That is the reason I never use the stock browser. Like I said grab Astro from the market and you will be good to go.

Thanks for the clarification but as I note in OP, I'd prefer a low-level solution as opposed to hitting the market.
So this should be a rather simple fix somewhere...

There is nothing that you can do about it with the default browser. It is one of the probs with the basic browser, there are ways around it and they all come from diff browsers or getting a different file manager like astro or Root explorer. There is no update zip that will fix this without rewritting the browser apk.

I thought the issue was with file associations and not the browser; and that would make sense, considering I have nothing for handling .zips or .docs and I guess .apks were not meant to be installed this way. Astro automatically creates assocations for a lot of filetypes--did I understand wrong?
However, it doesn't seem as easy as I thought--no wonder since it hasn't been done already--as Android seems to have a funny way of handling associations...

Its is as easy as installing a file manager that will work. It has been a known issue for as long as I have had an android device. One of the reasons I paid for Root explorer.

Here's a Google engineer's take which says that Android doesn't know what extensions are. However, the linux kernel has a feature-set for this. I do seem to have the /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc directory, although it is empty; which of course means I fail this test for the support of this feature.
I'm in over my head technically so I think I'll stop right here.
