Anyone using Touch Diamond on AT&T in US? With 3G working? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

In the past HTC disabled 3G support on the S710 and S730 for use in the US because no US carrier 'supported' this phone. So although both were decent phones we couldn't use them at EDGE speeds.
Does anyone know if the Touch Diamond quad-band model works at 3G speeds with the US AT&T network?
Thanks!
Bill

Oh yes, beautifully.. Better yet, the Diamond is able to use HSDPA with AT&T, which is faster than 3G, as alleged as 3.5G

Mine is working too!
Didn't work at first but I woke up this morning and the E turned into an H.

Thanks for the feedback!!

I bought the unlocked US version from Best Buy, they matched web price, and I had the phone up and running on AT&T very quickly. There is an auto setup for AT&T users. Solid performance, H in my area, auto changes elsewhere.

It can beat my home dsl speeds while tethering when I am on the road. That rocks pretty hard imo. Just be aware that the euro version of the diamond which can be found on the internet and in the used market cannot be flashed to light up the US 3G freqs, it really is a hardware issue.

Does anyone know if this will also work with T-Mobiles 3G network or is the frequency on this phone not capable? I want to check before I bite the bullet on picking one up. Thanks!

Unfortunatly, it won't due to different bandwidth. AT&T uses UMTS 850/1900, whereas T-Mobile uses 1700. More details can be found in "US 3G First Look" in this thread.

AT&T compatibility

Hello everyone! I'm wondering will this device work with AT&T service since it's just a triband phone, and, afaik, AT&T uses 850MHz as their primary frequency for GSM calls (depends on location) in NYC area.
Coverage maps are here:
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
Specifically the 1900Mhz map is here and you can zoom in to your area and see: http://www.gsmworld.com/cgi-bin/ni_map.pl?cc=us&net=be
[You can probably also find them some place on the AT&T website.]
Be aware tho that the diamond only does 3G at 900/2100, but AT&T use 850/1900. That means you won't be able to use 3G capabilities on AT&T anywhere.
I would either wait for the american version, or buy the 2G one they're selling in india for ~200$ less.
Thanks, man! Maybe i'll look at T-Mobile plans, looks like device will work with them
Well looking at the page it looks like T-Mobile have even less 1900 coverage (GSM). I don't know their current 3G situation, but they will be/are using 1700Mhz for 3G, which the diamond can't handle either

Diamond & ATT

I couldn't help myself. This phone seems perfect so i ordered a diamond that will arrive tommorow. Now my question is if anyone thinks the bands for US are present and need to be unlocked or if this will end up on ebay . Thanks!
There's several topics about it there.
You won't get any 3G in the US with it, and you'll only be able to use the 1900 band for voice/GPRS/EDGE.
Actually you are incorrect. 1900 Mhz is supported w/3G w/AT&T in certain areas. Unfortunately my Diamond is not even getting an EDGE connection. From what I am hearing the Diamond is only supporting 2100Mhz frequency w/3G according to HTC. Which to me makes no sense.. I am blogging my experience with it as it is the first production unit in the USA.
You just said i was incorrect and correct in the same paragraph lol
This is where all the confusion starts.. For GSM/GPRS/EDGE it does 900/1800/1900 MHz - only 1900 would work in the US. For UMTS (3G) it only does 900/2100 - neither of these frequencies are used in the US.
The protocols and modulation used are completly different for GSM/GPRS/EDGE vs UMTS. The dispersal of uplink and downlink frequencies is completly different. Just because it can do 1900 for GSM doesnt mean it should do 1900 UMTS.

You should get edge. Edge is an extention of GPRS but requires a different BTS (radio tower) setup. Its possible you don't have a strong enough signal, but it sounds like your confident you should have edge in that area.
The only thing i can suggest it to try in a different area - like the centre of town. Also, confirm your APN is setup corectly, the [G] may just be telling you GPRS is available, but not that you can attach.
I know with my elfin it takes a little stronger signal to initiate the Edge icon the first time (ie. after a hard reset). I can't get an edge signal inside my office but once I walk outside for a minute or two, bam I have it. Then when I go inside I still have it.

Diamond had UMTS(2100)+GSM(900+1800),UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900),UMTS(800+2100),UMTS(850+2100)+GSM(900+1800),UMTS(850)+GSM(900+1800) and UMTS(1700) depend what rom you had in your Diamond and where you bought your Diamond , At&T should be show 3G in US and T-mobile used 3G (1700 Mhz) in New York area
The platform in the phone can support all those bands, so you might be able to see them (like in the test rom) but the antennas are not there. So you won't actually be able to pick up a signal.

I guess all of us US early adopters must hope the hardware is there and can be enabled with a future flash.
T-mobile in the US uses 1900mhz for GSM/Edge and only has 3g in NYC, so I'm figuring that it's a cool stop-gap device until something is available for T-mobile 3G.
so anyone have the rom that had thoose bands....
confused
so im a little confused.... If I buy a diamond on ebay, it wont work in the US? or 3g just wont work? does the diamond accept a sim card?
On AT&T it will give you only GPRS! On Tmobile (NEW) it shows EDGE!! I dont understand this at all!

Voice and EDGE will work just fine as long as you are in a major area that uses 1900 band. You might have weak or no signal when you are in smaller rural areas since those usually extend into the 850 band.
You will not be able to use 3G since the Diamond only supports 900/2100, neither of which are used by AT&T
It looks like if you have ATT you are hosed for both voice and data, as most of ATT voice and data (Edge) is 850mhz. Most if not all of T-mobile voice-data-Edge is 1900mhz so you will have at least Edge. If you're looking for 3g data you're SOL until the US version of the diamond is released.
this fn blows htc has really screwed us here in usa...i was willing to spend 800 for this device and htc doesnt even see this? by the time it comes out here in quadband ...the x1 will be out and not mention the 3g iphone...oh well

I don't think HTC cares about America too much any more because it's iPhone territory. As they haven't used their own branding until recently, I think HTC are looking to gain market control and loyalty, and that's easiest where the iPhone hasn't been a huge success.

Again, HTC seem to like doing exactly what Apple are not doing, so they may go for multiple carriers. As far as I'm aware the Touch Diamond, and its branded versions, are launching on every network in the UK. That's the complete opposite of Apple's 'one network per country' policy, and they consequently seem to have dropped it (for example, in Italy).
AGREED 100%!! I have been saying this on my podcast for quite a while.. It is a huge mistake. I am now saying since I just received my Diamond that I took one for the team.. I will post my review as the days go by...

Best prices on GSM EDGE Diamond for T-Mobile

I am intested in purchasing an unlocked Diamond that I can use on the T-Mobile USA network with my existing SIM card. I'm perfectly happy with EDGE speeds as I don't really use the PDA that much for work. (I use a Verizon 3G wireless card for my work on a laptop.) Plus I'm happy paying $19/month for EDGE compared to 60/month. I'm hoping to enable the 850MHz with the new ROM.
Do you recommend I wait for the GSM 3G US version of the Diamond to arrive? How long of a wait do you think?
If I decide to just get the EDGE only Diamond what is the best price and who would you recommend I purchase it from?
Thanks!
I'm too waiting for T-Mobile USA 3G to be available. It's very unlikely the Diamond will be on TMo USA in the next few months. (But then what do I know?) IFAIK, so far I the only T-Mo USA 3G phone leaked out is HTC Kaiser - http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=537
I bought my Diamond from this guy last week - http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-TOUCH-DIAMO...RKS-WITH-AT-T_W0QQitemZ140254188917QQihZ004QQ - it already comes 850 enabled by HTC.
I love the Diamond so far! There is occasional sound issue (I had it twice in the week I have the phone) but it's not a big deal for me compared to what I get with the phone.
2nd, you can buy them with 850mhz enabled (meaning everything works with T-Mobile but 3G) or you can flash it yourself easily. If you're okay with EDGE, look for any Diamond that's Quad-Band and you'll get everything you want.
i have had my quad band diamond for 2 days. Works great on T-Mobile. DOn't currently have 3G on t-mobile AFAIK here anyway. Switched from the Kaise which was LAME and TOO BIG
Just ordered mine tonight. Thanks for the feedback!
Actually, I just thought of something... If your area is a 3G zone with T-mobile (nowhere but LV yet I think), you'll get 3G as long as it's on the 2100mhz band and not the 1700mhz they also use. The Diamond has a 900/2100mhz UMTS band capability, so half of T-Mobile's 3G will work.

TILT With US TMobile 3G

Hey Everyone!
Apparently, T-Mobile US is launching their 3G in my area (Minneapolis, MN) next week! I was wondering if there is any way possible to make my currently ATT Tilt to work with it?
When I was underground in a parking ramp, my phone showed 3G symbol, but did not connect to anything (not even able to call out). I dunno if that would help any.
Thank you in advance!
Rytt
You'll need your phone to be SIM unlocked and then setup the connection settings for tmobile 3g for 3g internet access. Don't get too excited. the battery life on 3g sucks. I've disabled it on AT&T.
I believe the answer that you're looking for is that the Tilt does not support the 1700MHz band.
It's not going to work on T-Mobile's 3G network.. T-Mobile uses 1700mhz band.
Yup that's why HTC is making a KAIS140. Its Probably going to be Marked the T-Mobile "Slant" or something.

Yup, 3g wont work.
I do believe that it is possible to enable 1700mhz with a software.
Diamond had 850Mhz enabled with a radio rom update. And if you will look at Kaiser FCC date sheet it was tested for 1700mhz.
So what i think is wan HTC wilt release Kaiser with 1700nhz for T-mobile, it will be possible to use that radio rom for all Kaiser and Polaris.
Link http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/09/20/htc-kaiser-manual-mentions-t-mobile-1700mhz-support/
Theres the answer I was wanting for! lol
I actually read that too so was hoping someone smart can update the radio for tmobile.

Get a different Radio or ROM (better both) and you can have 3G on all day and still will have power left when it's getting dark outside.
Radio adv.: NEON or NIKI, will help to speed up your GPS as well.
For editing the connection (auto setup AND edit) use HTC_CONNECTION_SETUP_V1_0_31758_7 (look around my upload failed).
Install
Boot
Answer question
Notes:
Technically cingular.wap doesn't require username and pw, works fine w/o.
CHECK PROXY SETTING AFTER YOU RAN IT (default is proxy ON better set it OFF).
Anyone know if it will be possible to unlock that frequency VIA radio update??
I hate to bump this post after so long, but I just got off the phone with T-mobile and they said they are supporting 1700 and 1900 for 3G bands. The kaiser supports 1900 as-is at the very least. This means once they're done, it *should* work. We will see, but I have hope for the AT&T Tilt users.

The simple answer is no, the tilt or any other 3g phones will not work on T-Mobile new 3G network. Phone reps usually don't know what the hell their talking about. The phone will work on T-Mobile as it does now, at Edge speeds. The new T-Mobile 3G network doesn't match up with any other network in the world, so you have to wait for T-Mobile to roll out some 3G smartphones. The new network runs on 1700 and 2100MHz bands.
that's not good....
1700 not exclusive for T-M0 3g?
From a 3g phone on t-mos website:
Band (frequency): 850 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz
its matches the 1800 and does not mention the 1700.
hmmm
Here's something a little strange for anyone reading this post.
I have a TYTN II unlocked straight from Dubai. I bought it before the Tilt was available in the US. I upgraded to the new WM 6.1 Rom when it came out. I was disappointed to hear the Tmobile isn't supporting any 3G frequencies that the TYTN II supports. I am also using a 5 year old SIM card, not that it makes much of a difference. Well here's where this little story gets interesting.
I live about 15 minutes outside of Washington DC. Yesterday I was in Baltimore for a photo shoot. When I got back in to the DC area I went to have drinks with a friend who is on AT&T and had a Tilt. After drinking a beer or two I decided to check my email. Lo and behold at the top of the screen I have a little "E" symbol but next to it where I have the signal indicator I had a little "3G" next to it. I know I wasn't roaming and I was down the street from my house. So obviously we decided to try a webpage I'd never been to that was image heavy to test the "3G" out. The page loaded up very fast and event my friend said it seemed like it was "3G".
I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up but I thought I'd share.
oh yeah, I also disconnected the connection and reconnected and I still get the "3G" I haven't done a soft reset yet because I'm really liking the speed. lol

What did you do after you got home and took off your left shoe?
i have the unlimited data plan. I ended up having to soft reset my phone and I no longer get the little 3G symbol. I did however get to check on the speed of it using one of those websites. Normally with EDGE I get roughly 80-95kbps when I check with the little 3G I got 171kbps. So my question is how/why did my phone pick up the 3G and am I able to get it to do it again.
The tilt supports 2100 band
since the device supports the 2100 band sholdnt it work, all the reps that i talked to said the 3g works on the 2100 band. WE HAVE THE 2100, this should work only if u could activate it under settings/phone band tap... which i cant
Now nooone will reply anything
Its like u guys dont wanna care if this works or not dude!

the kaiser, t-mobile, and 3G

Hi everyone--
I have an unmodded, "unlocked" at&t tilt that has a t-mobile gsm sim chip in it. I'm still running the WM6 that came in it, and can't seem to get access to the 3G speeds I know this thing is capable of. I've tried numerous software apps to "force" the phone to go 3G, to no avail. T-Mobile customer "support"--HAA! tells me I need a t-mobile phone to be able to take advantage of the 3G speeds. Needles to say, I feel this is a bunch of malarkey. T-Mobile put out this phone, did they not, and called it the "MDA Vario III"? Is there a rom for the mda that I could flash this thing with so I could get the 3G speeds? Or another rom perhaps? Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the malarkey is the truth! Because T-Mobile runs its 3G network on a different band than the Tilt is capable of! Sorry, this also effects me as I am a T-Mobile customer using a Tilt as well! My advice is to use Opera mini 4.2 for your internet browsing it is very fast on the Edge network!
The T-Mobile you refer to is European
It does not run on the same 3G as the US T-Mobile. The US T-Mobile uses 1700 Mhz and 2100 Mhz, I believe. The Tilt does not use the 1700 Mhz band. There was a rumor going around that there would be a new version of the Kaiser (KAIS140) that would use the US T-Mobile 3G bands but it was never released for sale. I don't think it will since it is pretty much at the end of the life cycle of the phone. They (HTC) have moved on to newer models with more features. If you would like to use the US 3G and live in an area with 3G, The T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) uses T-Mo 3G and has its own section on this forum.
bleh. newer models should still freaking tilt. that is the coolest thing about this phone. and it's pretty solid construction. my friend has had his over a year and its still going strong.

I thought the Tilt accessed 3G through it's tri band frequencies 850/1900/2100Mhz so that it could connect to most 3G networks worldwide, making it a world business tool for users?

True but T-Mobile uses the 1700 for upload and 2100 for download. ATT uses 1900 for both.
