The LCD screen of the HTC Diamond has yellowish tint

I know that I'm not the only one reporting this, but I'm the first one to provide pictures and video that prove that the problem is not so small as some might think.
It seems HTC started to use lower quality LCD screens with some (maybe all) of the newer Diamond units. These screens have a yellowish tint, and seem to have lower contrast.
Here is the proof (it's a comparison with my old Kaiser):
(both devices are at maximum backlight, and the Diamond's "auto backlight" option is off)

The difference seen in the picture is a bit exaggarated in comparison to what I see in real life (even though I did not touch the picture with any editing software, this is right from the camera), so I've included a video too, which more accurately portray the differences:

It is important to notice that without a direct comparison to a unit like the Kaiser (or the first batch of Diamonds), it might be hard to know that your Diamond has this phenomena, because even with this phenomena the screen look decent.
My fear is that both types of LCD screens are going to sell with new Diamond units from now on, making those who bought the yellowish screen unable to ever sell the unit for a decent amount of money (when they feel like upgrading).
We need a formal answer from HTC regarding this issue.

The pictures do look weird, but looking at the video, one could also say the Kaiser has a blue tint.
Just compared the Diamond with my Kaiser side by side: the Diamond colors do look a bit warmer (more toward amber/red) then the Kaiser (more toward blue). Don´t see a problem, though......have not analyzed a screenshot with Photoshop yet, may try one day....

If *all* the Diamond units had this "lower color temprature" behaviour, I wouldn't have said anything, since as I said the screen does look decent even with the tint and possible reduced contrast.
The thing is that if some Diamonds are toward the blue with more contrast, and some are toward the yellow with less contrast, then those of us who bought the latter are fu*ked if we ever want to sell it.
I still have an option to return the diamond to the seller. If I knew that from now on all Diamonds are going to be yellowish like this I would have kept it, but I don't know... it could be that HTC will notice that customers don't accept this new screen, and stop using it.

I read in another thread, can't find it again right now, that some are made in China with crap screens and some are made in Taiwan with better screens, I can't confirm this but someone in the thread said that those with serial numbers beginning HT are the Taiwan models, maybe you could check yours and tell us where it was made.

Sure, at the back of my Diamond it is written:
"DIAM100 FCC ID:NM8DMS Made In Taiwan"

I just sent back my Diamond to store because there was a yellow line with the width of 5mm and with a bonus... when I touched the left side of touchscreen it waved like you throw the rock to water

I prefer the warmer looks, it makes photos and pictures look more natural and also makes video look much more vibrant and richer with colour.

Here are two Diamonds I have on me right now. Notice the color washout on one of it. Both are having the same ROM and brightness settings.

I remember whilst ith 02 and the xda2i i went through three units (insurance) and no joke every new device I got back had a different tint to the LCD... different factories new LCD suppliers god knows...

i face the same issue as well. my wife's TD is indeed brighter compared to mine. hers was the first batch bought when launched. Personally, I liked her screen better(damn, should have bought the Omnia to exchange with her...)

ya guys have no idea how yellow the Touch Cruise was!
But at least, it seemed that all Cruises were the same..

Hi i just bought one today. (in Denmark) an i also noticed a yellow line in the bottom of the screen. i brought it back to the shop, and we went through 3 htc diamonds all with the yellow tint... damn shame. they just received their batch this weekend.
the display also made some "waves" when pressed upon

I am now on my THIRD htc diamond. All with yellow marks and ripple effects. Orange keep sending me new ones all with the same problem. SO frustrated and dont know what to do. Whether to get another one!?

Samething here in Sweden, I've gone through 3 Diamonds:
- The first had a really bad yellow spot issue, could see it clearly over the keyboard icon
- The second didnt have any yellow spots, but the screen and keyboard was poorly matched so light was leaking through the crack... badly.
- The third doesnt have the light leak, but I'm back to yellow spots :/
But its not nearly as bad as the first was, I can deal with it.
Electronics suck today, me thinks. Its all about cutting corners to maximize profits, screwing over the customer to make extra millions (but what are they going to do with it? Hire engineers to figure out how to cut more corners of course). My old K600i (like first gen 3G) is built like a tank and I expect it to still work good as new 10 years from now.

Had 4 Diamonds. Two are the original DIAM100 when they were first released onto the market the Screens were perfect. When the Diamond DIAM130 was released in Australia on Telstra, i got another one to test the NextG features of the operator, i sent this straight back thinking it was a faulty LCD screen cos of yellow tinge aswell as poor viewing angle and contrast of pictures. Received a replacement and it was the same thing out of the box, didnt bother trying to get another replacement after i saw my friends DIAM130 also had the same issue. But once again very poor contrast, not as sharp, and viewing angle even worse, and of course the yellow tinge, the screen just never looks white.. It doesnt help when you have a normal one to compare it to, my friends are jealous that i got a DIAM100.

Had exactly the same issue as described above with my GF's Diamond. First one she had had a yellow cloud across the lower part of the screen and also in the top right where the 'ok' usually is. If I hadn't spotted it she probably wouldn't have noticed but when you know what to look for it's quite obvious. Would have annoyed the hell out of me from second one. On a full white screen like Google it was clearly visible. Sent it back to Carphone Warehouse and had a new one within a few days. This one is better but still perfect. It's only slightly yellow along the bottom and not at the top so we're not going to bother again.
Very disturbing that so many others have the same issue. I wonder how many people have just not noticed because the bottom band is usually blacked out by soft keys?

Oh yeah, I was also one of the first to notice this issue. Two little yellow clouds on the bottom of the screen. I contacted HTC and told them about it and my phone has been shipped out for repair.
I really don't care how long it takes, but I don't expect to sit and see two yellow spots on the superb VGA screen when I paid close to $700. It really is a shame.
I will also make sure HTC not send the phone back out to me until I get a screen that:
a) has no yellowish tint
b) has no burnt pixel
c) Properly aligned
d) no yellow spots
e) any others?

I have noticed the same and was able to get an official explanation from HTC.

I've got the same problem.
Bought my diamond in sweden, at the operator Tre (3). My first phone had a strong wellow light, as shown on the picture attached.
I went back with it, got another one, went home only to discover that the new phone had the exact same problem - but with even stronger light.
The guy who works at the place also owns a diamond, but his yellow light isn't that strong, so he wont bother, he said.
At the store, they called HTC and was told to re-send their whole storage of diamonds. HTC knew about the problem, and told us that a batch in the process of making the phone, was corrupted. A couple of thousands phones had this problem, thay said.
Now, I'm sitting here without my diamond. I regret to accept a phone even if the yellow light is just covering a fewpixels. Like Vector-SS I paid a lot of money for it, and will only accept a totally clear display.
What worries me is that htc said only a few 1000 phones was failing in the display.. after reading this thread, I can imagine the amount is quite more larger than that.

Oily liquid underneath screen - from nowhere

I'm gutted. Somehow my Diamond has got this oily liquid underneath the screen in the centre of the screen. It's come from nowhere?? I haven't got it wet, have always used a screen protector, etc but now it's as if it has escaped from somewhere inside the phone and is now sitting between the digitizer and the glass underneath. Where on earth does this come from? Has anyone known this to happen to other HTC's? I guess it has come from the LCD. God only knows how this happened, I treat my Diamond with a lot of care. I tried to take some photos for you guys to show you what I mean but it was pointless, you can only see this oil slick when the light reflects off the screen so it's hard to actually capture that in a photo. Just imagine an oil slick underneath the screen that moves around when you touch it with your finger. Oh yeah, and now my digitizer is inaccurate all the time. Actually I made a little picture to at least try and illustrate (sorry I suck at paintbrush)
I'm a bit worried that I'm going to end up with one of those ****ty yellow-tint replacement LCD's. My friend bought a touch pro the other day and he ended up with one of these screens, and believe me, they are A JOKE. The look *pitiful*. If this happens it's byebye Diamond and byebye HTC. Just on 6 months old this thing and been treated with nothing but absolute care. I might even do the unthinkable and get an iphone now I hear that TomTom is on it's way over there.. Wow I guess I must be really pissed off, lol..

I used hair dryer but it is there still.

all i can say is that not always and only looking from a certain angle i have the same square stain you describe. i thought i am the only one....
the strange thing is that looking now at the screen everything looks OK (the stain is not there) but i remember seeing the stain in many occasions in the past. maybe is temperature related and right now is morning here and i didn't start using my device yet.
i'll keep an eye on this thread.
i also take good care of my device and use a screen protector.

Yes, exactly, staring at the screen normally, I cannot see it. But, when the light hits it, I can see it very much.
And, now when tapping the screen instead of feeling that cushioned kind of effect, it's now really hard and the taps with the stylus are much louder than what they were before. It's like the previously trapped 'oil' actually gave a softening effect, but now it has escaped or whatever, and it feels like I am tapping glass, or something equally as hard. But we all know the glass is a couple layers deep, and there is the soft digitizer and also the screen protector between that glass and the stylus. Now it feels like those extra layers are not even there. I can barely use the horizontal scrollbars now as the stylus is inaccurate in a lot of areas on the screen, but not all, and not all the time. (?) Even after a re-calibration the problem is not going away. Dialling a number takes several attempts due to missed numbers, and other niggly annoying things you can imagine. Hmmm. I wonder how many people have this but have not noticed yet?
Please post here is you have this problem, guys! Remember to look at your screen with an overhead light directly bouncing off your screen and into your eyes. Then you will see the oil slick effect. And when in the position you can touch the screen with your finger and see the oily liquid move around. Please let us know if you have this problem, thanks.

I think its related to what the screen reflects, because sometimes i see it to and sometimes i don't, now i have a LCD Computer Screen from samsung and if i use the phone at home i don't see the 'oil', if i place my phone in the right direction so that it reflects the screen i will see the screen reflected part with the 'oil' ,so if i hold it so that my LCD screen appears for 50% on my screen(y-ax) and the other 50 percent of the diamond reflects a wall or something, i only see the 'oil' at that part that reflects my LCD screen...
Now this isn't only with my LCD screen, the roof @ my school does the same thing, some kind of walls, etc.

whoa, that's really weird, I just noticed that on my Diamond while sat at my desk...! I'm sure I would have seen it before now, but who knows... It's only visible under certain light though (flourescent seems to be the worst). Its presence doesn't appear to affect the digitizer and can't actually see it when the backlight's on...

I had exactly the same problem. Called HTC logged as a fault .. New screen replaced under warranty . Very impressed !
Its the touch screen touching the LCD ... A known probelm to HTC so give them a call

ahhh I just noticed the same oily substance on my diamond too!! so whats the deal ?!

Wow I have the same problem too...don't see it directly but when I tilt it at certain angle I can see it. I will give HTC a call and hopefully they will help me replace the screen.

I got the same problem too!!!! And OMG....soo many ppl have it too!! This is crazy.....its like some mass defective shipment or something! I have the same oily patch on my elfin. And my digitizer is new....its barely been 2 months!! I had it replaced coz I accidentally cracked the last one. Though it doesn't seem to be affecting the screen calibration or any of the screen accuracy. I hope its not like a problem that aggravates into something else altogether (fingers crossed).

Have the same problem with my diamond. Will send it to HTC repair center in austria a few days past christmas.

Good old Orange UK contacted them this morning and will receive a new diamond tomorrow!!! soo cool well worth leaving t mob for!

Same problem on my Touch HD (Blackstone)
Got my Touch HD less than 4 weeks ago and noticed a small oliy patch (size a 5p coin) in the bottom after a few days. Sometimes the patch was visible and sometimes not. It has now progressed to a rectangle of about 1 inch by 3 inch. I noticed it can hardly be seen with normal light bulbs or outside, but under certain light conditions like our special lighting in the office (some natural, blue light bulbs) AND energy saving light bulbs it is very obvious and annoying.
I have no idea how it happened as I had 3 other HTC touch screen devices in the past without this problem. I am carrying my phone in my trouser back pocket, but I think it does not bend it enough to cause this. Another suspicion (guess of mine) is the screen protector itself. I am wondering that maybe the temp difference between protector and screen was too large and when it contracted it pulled away the upper layer of the touch screen?
I am attaching a bmp that shows the patch on the phone.
I have now contacted BuyMobilePhones.net where I bought the phone and after being wrongly asked to contact Orange for a fault code, I have sent it to them for repair/replacement. I hope I will get it back next week. Until then I will use my Artemis / O2 XDA Orbit 2.

Does the Note suffer from the green tint?

I was put off the Galaxy S2 because of the screen. Unless you look straight onto it I can see a green tint and if move the device the screen has a green shimmer to it which gets on my nerves and reduces the screen brightness to my eyes.
Ive been told this is the glass coating, does the Note have the same effect / tint?

The green tint was criticized in a German review of the Galaxy Note. Thereafter, the review was updated. It nows says that many users with phones having a green tint got a replacement and that the newer phones do not have this issue.

Ordered and returned a Galaxy S2 to Amazon.co.uk this week because I just couldn't adjust to the green tint, also the plastic made my hand sweat!? So is it a bad batch or is it like the iPads and iPhones which have 2 or 3 different screen manufactures - some yellowish, some redish.
The Note looks like a killer device with all of the goodness of the S2 plus a stylus and I really don't want to order a iPhone 4s but I'm hovering on the order button....

no green tint here. but even if there was, the 2 year warranty would cover it.

In fact my S2 comparing to note have a blue tint on white and the note it is more natural.

Not sure abt green but the two S2 I went thru had a severe blue tint. Was extemely excited abt the S2 and purchased 3 different cases, a car charger and the mhl adapter even before I got the phone.
The blue tint was so bad at the slightest of angles that it was simply unbearable. Got it replaced but the same story again. Finally caved in and bought the Sensation, but the screen was unbelievably inferior when compared to my HD2 and had that returned too.
Completely torn between the Nexus and the Note and jus can't make up my mind. That said, my HD2 running Hyperdroid CM7 is rock solid and super smooth and I love having physical keys, Its just that 'm bored using the same phone for so long now.

No green/blue/whatever tints noticed on either the SGS2 or the Note.
I guess these days everyone seems to have quality control problems with screen manufacture... just saw a friend do a side-by-side white colour comparison with two iPhone 4S' and one was more blue than the other.

My new note also has this tint. Personally it doesn't bother me, cause it only visible when you tilt white background. The pics below are from some review site, who also saw this. Anyone else?

Mine has a slight green tint, and sometimes there are infinitesimal color shifts that I notice while I'm reading ebooks on a solid color background. It's not pronounced enough to justify my replacing it though.

How do you guys check the green tint when in the store? what settings or apps do i have to go to to check the green tint?

I set both units to max brightness and then chose the one with less green hue. It was noticeable when I looked for it, and I was glad I asked him to let me look at both to choose one.
In the Samsung store, the note is clearly much better in terms of color temp under the fluorescent lighting of the store, than the GS2 was. The GS2 has a very obvious tint that was visible even without placing the note side-by-side next to it.
That's not to say the Galaxy Note is perfect. Its native white point is still pretty high it seems. At max brightness, my Note's white point is still noticeably "cooler" than my two calibrated monitors in the same indoor lighting environment. Dim down the display and it becomes even more "blue".

Thanks for your input. So when you saw both units, there was definite green tint on both? Do you guys consider this a normal trait for the kind of screen technology we have?

When looking at just 1 phone, it's not noticeable, when compared together, one of the notes had more green than the other, but not on a "deal breaking" level.
Yes, it's normal with this tech, Mobile versions of AMOLED tech never claims to be accurate, it only really sells its super wide color gamut and deep blacks.
If you want color "accuracy", then then iphone4s is technically more accurate. If you want an android phone, then a more accurate comparable res'd screen is the one on the LG Optimus LTE with AH-IPS 1280x720 on 4.3". Some display certification company claims that it's better than Super AMOLED Plus.
Accurate-to-life doesn't lead to being perceptually appealing though, hence why people are immediately drawn to the deep blacks and eye-popping saturation and brightness of Super AMOLED. Trust me when I say the note's screen will put a smile on your face!

I have the exact problem, but mine is good, but it shifts int green too, its a shame its not perfect these days.

Mine has NO green tint, the white is as white as snow.

No green tint when you look at it straight or when viewing angles? mine also shows excellent white when your looking at it straight. But when trying to view angles, the greenish tint slowly appears.

[Q] Does your screen have uniform color (or color temp?)

So we were discussing this on the other forum--google "uniform screen color" on android central for the thread. Someone posted that their screen color wasn't uniform, and so I shared my experience below.
I had to return my turbo because there was clear but subtle color difference depending on the area of the screen--almost like the color temp was getting warmer in the lower right corner, or like someone described, like there was too much brightness in one area vs another. It got more obvious to me as i used the phone, especially for reading ebooks.
When using the app "display test" from the play store, and the "viewing angle test" graphic, it was obvious that contrast, color, and white balance was different in the lower right corner.
I returned it, argued forever (2 hrs) with the manager at verizon who couldn't see it...until I showed him the test graphic, and he looked at the various parts of the screen with a jewelers loupe (magnifier.) They replaced it as a defect, but said it was so subtle they were basically doing me a favor. I disagree, but whatever, time will tell on these displays.
The new one, while MUCH better....still does not provide uniform color temp and brightness. It's disappointing, given how great this display was supposed to be.
I'd love if anyone else could look at the test graphics and see for yourselves...but be forewarned, as I said in the other forum, once you see it you can never unsee it......
And yes I took the plastic off of the screen.

Sadly I see the same on mine. Originally had a ballistic nylon model which had the issue and have since switched to the standard with the same. Mine is almost more of a banding horizontally across the screen almost like it heats up and cools down a few times through the height of the screen.

It's very, very slight on mine. Can't decide if its a swap issue for me yet.
Shame we don't have a way to back these up for issues, I just got it where I wanted it!

Huh? Its AMOLED RGBG, possibly the WORST display technology ever invented. How can you have expected it to be "great"?

I'm in the same boat. It's more noticeable on a white background. Any chance it can improve over time? I recall iphones having similar issues a couple years ago and people saying there was a "break in" period.

No idea. Decided to live with mine last high and today considering a return this afternoon, lol.

I definitely have an incredibly noticeable pinkish tint at the top of my screen. This is quite infuriating.

Are you going to exchange it? I thought about doing this, but I'm afraid the replacement might be just as bad or worse. I have the pinkish tint on the bottom half of the screen.

I'm curious as to how open Verizon will be to exchanging it for such a "minor" issue. I just got a replacement because calls wouldn't work on my first one, so I was able to get some pretty good comparison photos (both phones at max brightness viewing the same images in QuickPic with no ambient light photographed with my 5D): New phone is on the left.

I thought it did until I read this. There is a redish blob about an inch up from the bottom. Now I cant unsee it. I will wait a few months and the use motos guarantee let them work out the manufacturing issues first.

I think I am going to do the same.
My 3rd Turbo, after 2 14-day exchanges, only has a small line of pink about an inch up from the bottom. However, it also goes away depending on viewing angle (it shifts up once I view it past like 45 degrees tilting the top away from me). So who knows.

I know this is an old thread but I got my Moto Maxx today and it has this same issue towards the top part of the phone. I got it from swappa from a store in PR so I'm wondering if I should see if they will swap it out for me but it seems like all of them have it to some degree or another? I have also seen similar posts about the nexus 6 (not low brightness pink hue issue but like this, uneven temp) I'm wondering if I should go through the trouble if the next one will be the same

Just got my turbo last week and noticed pink discoloration about an inch down from the top and half an inch up from the bottom, full width of the screen. To those who have had this device for several months, does the pink go away? Anybody out there manage to get a non pink one? Contemplating taking it back after flashing back to stock image. Thanks!
Edit: Here is a pic of the screen at full brightness taken with my LG G2. Oops, there is some pocket fuzz on glass, don't mind that. The right side of the pic is the top of my Turbo screen and has about twice as much pink as the bottom of the screen.

Here is my Turbo next to a good one at Costco. Mine is on the right. Pretty easy to see how pink it is:
Funny story really...so I got a new Turbo after making sure the screen was good - no discernible pinkness from normal viewing angles. I took it back to work and set it on the wireless charger I got at Verizon a few days ago. When I set it on there, the phone apparently crashed and booted into Fastboot. I was surprised but thought maybe the case I put on it was pushing the volume and power buttons down, but nope it wasn't. OK, so I chose to Start from Fastboot, it rebooted right back into Fastboot...uh oh. I chose Factory and hit the button aaaaaaaand this Droid was never living again. It went black and doesn't do jack now. It charges still, so that part of it still functions, but nothing you push will cause it to display anything or vibrate, etc. Great.....back to Costco I go. This time the dude was all "You know...you fulfilled your early-upgrade requirements by sending in the Razr, you could probably swap your dead Turbo for any phone if you do Edge". Hmm, this was unexpected...welcome, but unexpected. I had the S6 staring me in the face and I know they got root on the Verizon version, so I got one of those, joining the sheep. I do miss the Turbo, but the S6 is nice, too. I don't know which one I like better yet, but I'm leaning towards the S6 without letting the 2 bad Turbo's sway my opinion. I did lose about $100 in screen protectors, cases, and Mofo with the Turbo experiment, but it was worth it to get upgraded 7 months before my upgrade date.
And ya the Verizon dude noticed the hash in the notification for the "SU binary update" or whatever, and SuperUser in the app drawer...and he just laughed. Glad I didn't waste my time restoring it back to the stock image.

mine has a similar issue. the lower half of the screen has a pinkish hue. did yours get fixed?

[Q] Screen Horizontal ghost lines on lower brightness levels

Has anyone else noticed horizontal ghost lines on the screen when viewing white backgrounds with lower brightness levels. ?
I downloaded a screen test app to check my new Moto x 2014 for dead pixels and noticed what's described above.
The app in question is this one Screen Test
And the pattern where it becomes more noticeable is the following one.

I also noticed on chrome browser while at the "about:blank" page or any page with a lot of white background for that matter.
This seems to occur on brightness levels 40% and lower. and becomes less apparent as brightness levels pass 50%.
It's this normal or should I consider a return. I've never owned and AMOLED display before so not sure.
Can you do a test with the app mentioned above and report if you see something similar and at what level
of brightness do you notice it or if you notice it at all.

Display Tester app has a test specifically designed
to detect banding and it really has a problem. There are mentions on other threads that some replacements are coming with either the same or worst issues.

Every AMOLED screen I've looked at has had minor screen banding visible on a white background. My Moto X is a little "grainy" looking on a white background, and I can see banding with the brightness very low. If it really bothers you... get a phone with an LCD. It's kind of the "backlight bleed of AMOLEDs" in that they all have it, it can be more or less noticeable on different screens and different models, but it's only visible in certain circumstances.

Maybe that's the case with this type of screens. I expressed my concern to Motorola and they are sending me a new one. If its worst I'll just keep this one.

Tried the same app, using the same test pattern with the screen on the dimmest setting shows no banding at all(and I am quite picky). Hopefully your replacement is better.

I really hope so too. I really like the hardware but could not tolerate seeing at that banding line all day while using chrome.

I noticed the same issue with my Moto X 2013. I just ordered a 2014, so I'm very disappointed to to hear this. I still think amoled has a long way to go (typing this from a decent IPS display on a tablet and despite some backlight issues around the edge, none of that banded amoled crap).

I received my replacement phone yesterday and happy to report that it doesn't appear to have any display banding issues.
I also noticed with this new unit that the haptic feedback feels more solid than the one going back, the first one
rattled a little bit when it vibrated with notifications and while playing something in high volume. Not sure if both issues
where related to either the motor being less aggressive on the new unit or to something being loose on the old one.
I'm very happy with my purchase now that I got this new unit.

Glad to hear the replacement is better. I have been extremely impressed by the LCD in my 2014 Moto X. Not only do I see no banding at all but the color temperature is better(whiter, very little yellow) then any of the three Moto X 2013's I have had. And the screen in the best 2013 Moto X was already very nice.

I was really surprised, this was my first bad experience with a Motorola device. I've been a long time buyer of their products since the
dumb-phone era and never had to return one before on issues like this. Heck, I bought the Motorola Xoom 4G unlocked on day 1 (by the way it was like $800.00 ouch!)
but that sucker was built like a thank, literally, and it's still rocking Cyanogen mod after all this time. My wife is rocking a 2013 Moto G, great device for the money, and its going strong.
After being a long time customer it was a relief to know that they still make good products despite being bounced between owners as a company.

I'm really hoping my phone (currently being assembled) shares the characteristics of your replacement. I did like the 2013 a bit, but the linen-like display always pissed me off, especially coming from an M8 (switched to a no-contract carrier from Verizon, so I had to downgrade).

At least the banding issue is easy to spot on any app with white/light-gray backgrounds with the naked eye. If not you can rely on the following app.

I'm happy to report that I can't see any banding or strange manufacturing artifacts in my unit (arrived today). Side-by-side with my 2013 units, the display looks smooth (little bit of grain) vs the display of the 2013 that looks like it was printed on a loosely woven piece of linen.

the banding on this phone drives me nuts.

It appears that there are about 4 faint horizontal bands across the display, but not nearly as bad as the old Moto x.

I just want to pop in with a comment from the future. It is 2017 (waves hands) and I just ordered the Moto G5 Plus to replace my Moto G 2015 model. First off the new model's 5.2" screen is barely noticably bigger than the 5.0" and I kind of wish I held out for a G5S Plus with the 5.5" screen, but that's not the issue. The moto G 2015 looks perfectly smooth white with no banding in any direction and no graininess to the pure white. The Moto G5 Plus has horrendous banding from top to bottom, and I think it's in the backlight and not the LCD portion. It's visible at various brightnesses through white, light colors, medium colors... anything with any level of brightness. They are replacing it for me of course, I will post back with my results. If the replacement still sucks, I'll return it, stick it out with my 2015 and try a G5S Plus when they become available.

You're lucky to be getting phone replacements, I had to hand in my Moto X to the service centre for a month to get the screen replaced.
