[TEST]CAUSES of MICROSD FLASH PROBLEMS - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

BACKGROUND:
Many people (including me) can't flash ROM from microSD card
AIM:
To help identify possible causes of the flashing errors with the microSD card method
METHODS:
Method: A trial and error test was conducted on my X1
Variables: 1) Brand: Sandisk, Kingston and unbranded cards 2) Capacity: 1 GB and 2 GB cards 3) Format: FAT32 or non-FAT32 (other format)
Endpoints: Flash successful or Flash not successful
Total cards tested: 6
Write lock: released
RESULTS:
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when non-FAT32 formatted
FLASH NOT SUCCESSFUL: All cards when brand = Kingston
FLASH SUCCESSFUL: All FAT32 cards from Sandisk brand or unbranded
CONCLUSIONS:
Seems like most of the problems reported could be due to 1) non-FAT32 format or B) Kingston brand cards
COMMENTS:
Conlcusions can not be extrapolated to all Kingston cards because I tested only two Kingston cards and both were 2GB. Possible confusing factors could be considered
PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE to add more input

I have never withnessed any problem.
1GB 2GB 6GB 8GB 16GB..
Havn't tried 4GB yet.

Any of these was kingston ??

Works like a charm on 8gb microSDHC from Sandisk.
Always use sandisk, best memcards on the market atm.

Nope, all of them were Sandisk.

I have a 8GB kingston here, no problem with the microSD flash method.

seriously, but then admittedly I've not looked very hard
I've promised to be a quick website for someone in exchange for a 32gb card at somepoint, but I guess they aren't in the wild yet..

Yours is Kingston "SDHC" 8GB
My cards are "normal" SD 2GB
There could be a difference...
MORE USER EXPERIENCES PLEASE ???

what about the various errors? "no image file" appears to be default - could be worth loggin these too.

No luck with the 2G Sandisk MicroSD that came with my phone.
Only tried FAT32, but tried renaming card (and not) too - just in case.

Did you format to FAT32 ?? (PS: choose "default block size)

@ gtrab - connection lagging. tried editing original message when saw already posted, so changed it - oh the web we weave
what do you mean by choose default "block size"?

@gtrab - OK penny just dropped - you refer to default allocation size of card - cool, will try next time as did not even open that drop down option.
cheers.

- Remove micro SD card from phone
(I assume you have a SD slot or a USB card reader on your PC)- Insert the card with SD adapter on your PC
- Open Windows File Explorer
- All drives are shown on "My PC"
- Right click over the SD card drive (mine is "E:")
- Choose "format"
- A dialog box pops up (see attachment, mine is spanish but should give you an idea)
- From "file system" choose "FAT32"
- From "block size" choose "default block size"
- DONT CHECK THE "QUICK FORMAT BOX
If this doesn't work, then try ANOTHER SD card from another brand

no prob with kingston 8 gb card

transcend 8gb class 6 doesnt work, gonna buy another tomorrow..

I have a 4GB Kingston Micro SDHC and that has never once let me perform an upgrade via the SD flash method.
Also I tend to have serious problems getting UC to work at all, and when it does start to work the process is never completed successfully. I just end up manually installing everything.
Have been planning on getting a Scandisk card for a while, might have to invest before my next rom upgrade!

Kingston
here's my experience:
My phone is an X1i that comes with a 2GB Kingston.
Ive used this card for flashing for 5 times already and
never encountered any errors.
i used to always format my card to fat32 with the default allocation size
everytime im going to flash a new rom. all succesful with no hang-ups.
heres whats labeled in front of my card:
SD-CO2G JAPAN
SDC/2GB 35
so, my card is not a SDHC?

Flashing without RUU?

Hi,
I have received my device today, and have flashed Hard-SPL already. Now I want to flash some cooked roms. This works just fine by using the CustomRUU (or the RUU provided with the rom), but is there also a way to flash without a RUU?
By entering the SPL there comes up a text "No Image file!", so I think the SPL is looking for any image files. I have tried to put them on a formatted SDHC card, but that didn't worked.
Is there some more magic I have to know about, or how can I flash a rom, without any kind of RUU.
Best regards
johnpatcher
well.....
with the diamond you drop your file on to internal storage (4gb)
enter bootloader and away you go.....hope this helps
Where on the internal storage do I have to put it, and must it carry any special name?
use file explorer
or with pc .....active sync phone
and open phone via pc and you should find it that way.

I don't think that putting a 100MB file on my device via Active Sync is the right way ... .
well
thats how we have to do it on the diamond..... our roms are 60-90mg
good luck
just get rid of file once flashed ok
Ok, I have a solution: You have to format the card, and then put the nbh file on the card, while naming it "BLANCIMG.nbh".
Works just fine and is faster than through a RUU.
Just rename rom file to BLACIMG.NBH and put in fresh formated microSD card. Insert card in phone and start bootloader mode. Flashing will start, it's more faster and secure
indeed: BLACIMG.nbh in the root of the SD!
faster, safer: but you'll have to reboot your telephone by opening the battery cover, quite inconvenient if you do it many times per day...
Whats wrong with using an RUU? When I had my kaiser I used it all the time.
^^^ You're right mate
Hi
I want to ask any one success to flash HD from SD, what is the type of the SD included with your HD, and did you reformat it, or using another SDHC card to flash HD, and did any one can flash HD with Transcend 8GB ?
I get my HD with Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 4 and can't flash HD from it, I get "No Image Found" message
I format the card again Fat32 and try it but the same error
I try my old 2GB microsd and can flash HD but with Transcend 8GB can't
there is many report about this problem without any solution, any help
thx
For me it works just fine with the included SanDisk 8GB, but my 4GB Transcend doesn't work neither, so maybe its a Transcend thing .

Class 6 does not work either
I have ADATA 8GB Class 6 MicroSD - does not work.
Sandisk 8GB Class 2 MicroSD - works.
Could be related to speed - not manufacturer...

Think if you read that thread you'll realise that SanDisk does work, its Transcend sd card which doesn't (according to thread). SanDisk worked fine for me. Possible solution is to format SD Card to Fat32. Even if your SD Card already is Fat 32, try formatting it again.

Cannot flash from 16GB microsd

Not a big problem but I cannot seem to flash with my 16GB microsd. My 8GB works fine. Anyone has similar issues or knows the solution? It can be troublesome to swap cards when flashing...
I have no problem flashing from my Sandisk 16GB card. Did you try reformatting the card (FAT32!) ?
I'm using a sandisk 16GB microSD card as well, and have no problems flashing from it. What brand is your microsd card? Then again, doesn't matter in your case, as you already bought it, but for the rest of us it might be important, so that we can stay clear of that brand.
I have the same problem mate, I could flash a few times at the beggining, from then, I have not been ablo to do so, I already tried formatting it to FAT32, erase all files and jut leave a blacimg.nbh file in it and it did not worked anyway.

Same here for me
Kingston 16 GB also SanDisk 16 GB.
After some flashes it stoped working, allways shows no imagefie
worked fine
- 16gb , 2gb
didnt work
- 2x 8gb and a 1gb
but i never sorted out why they wouldnt work even after re formating
I bought one week ago a new micro SD card 16Go Class 6 from Transcend...
And I have the same problem, which is not really a problem.
I use my old 8Go card for flashing.
I read few months ago that we can't flash the touch HD from anyone micro SD card. I don't know why ?
info : Transcend micro SD 16Go FAT32 32-Kilo
if you count free space on empty cards, transcend 8gb and sandisk 8gb will show 8gb but differnt values if you look in details
seems different layout of partitions for different vendors
flashing from sandisk is always OK
transcend = no go
I am using Sandisk 16gb class 6. My other 8gb sandisk class4 & kingston class 6 works fine...
Can flash but UC does not work
I can flash using my 16 gbyte Sandisk but I cannot get UC to work. I either get an error saying the cabs cannot be located or it just hangs. Anyone else see that particular problem?
Z
Transcend are BAD. They seem to have real problems with large files such as ROM Images and MemoryMap data files.

[Q] Sandisk microSDXC 64GB class 10 UHS1 showing 27.46GB!

I have bought Sandisk microSDXC 64GB class 10 UHS1. When I put it in my computer using USB2.0 Kingston Mobile Reader it could not recognise it. I removed it and I placed it in my Galaxy Note. I went into clockworkmod 6.19 (Non Touch) and I partitioned the card with 2GB or 4GB (I do not remember exactly!!!) and Swap size 256k. When my phone restarted, the phone did not recognize the card. Therefore, I went through the internet to find a solution. I found the program "EaseUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition" and reformatted the card with FAT32 and cluster size 32KB. When it finally finished, it gave me the size 27.46GB!! I reformatted through SD Formatter 3.0 hoping that the partition used through Clockworkmod messed up the actual size of the card. I successfully re-formatted the card, however the size remained the same. I know that the size of a microSDHC card 32GB is around 29GB, therefore it does not explain size 27.46GB.
My question now, if there is an answer!!! Is the card faulty or did Clockworkmod messed with the card?
Please advise if possible!
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, because I think this a very strange story!
Wrong section.
Have you tried formatting the card with your phone?
Settings > Storage (Scroll to the bottom)
Make sure to pick the correct one.

How sure you are that your Kingston reader is SDXC compatible? If it's not, it can be that your card is damaged now and can't be fixed (I had that issue). Second thing you should have format the card using some exFAT compatible ROM (for example XLS7 or XLSA) in storage section of the phone, not in CWM.
You should also check if there isn't any other partitions on the card using EaseUS Partition Master. I would delete all partitions on the card and then format using exFAT. But it would work only if the card isn't already damaged by incompatible reader.
If you search abit you will find that sdxc cards used with sdhc reader can be damaged. google it you will find it.

Format it with the phone. That usually gets it.

I think that the CWM messed up with the SD partition. Try to format in Windows ad tell me the results.
if I'm correct 32gb is the max for the n7000. Note II does up to 64gb
Nope. I have the same card and it shows me all of the space(about 59gb) and i juat put it in the phone.

Could be the reason OR the Card Reader may not be compatible with SDXC...
I got a Transcent dual (micro and standard Card reader) which works fine while some others incompatible.
Once he got the good card reader, he should try to format first the SDXC as exFat (on Windows 7) to be sure he got 64GB, then to get it work on the G-Note is another story...
I had to copy some files (any kind) on the card, then when plugged on the G-Note, the system detect an issue and propose to format the card (watch carefully at the messages)... When done, all is good !

MicroSD support

According to the official information for the Lenovo K3 Note it only supports MicroSD cards upto 32 GB. I tried my Kingston 64 GB card and it doesn't work but I am hearing that people have gotten 64 GB cards to function in their phones.
Can anyone confirm one way or another whether 64GB cards can work in this phone? If so are they specific makes / models?
Many thanks in advance.
Try formatting the SDcard in FAT32, 64GB/128GB uses the ExFat format, that's why your K3 note won't see it, this SoC don't support exFat. When you put your Sd in the phone it won't offer a formatation to work?
It didn't appear to offer any formatting options but I will give it another go.

I had to format mine on a laptop before the phone recognised it
Well it seems like good news. I put the card into an SD card adapter and then into the PC. It loaded some drivers and recognised the thing. I then formatted it using NTFS and reinstalled it on the phone. This time the phone recognised it as either an empty card or a card that needed formatting so I re-formatted it once more and it registers as a card with 58 Gb free. Yippee!!!
Currently copying the 32 Gb card onto the new one using my PC. Hopefully it will go well and then I'll copy some more stuff over just to see that it will genuinely go over the 32 Gb limit.
So far....so good

Well I have been using the card for the last month and all fine. I switched to limoncelo this morning and the card is still recognised with no problems. For reference this is a Kingston 10X 64 GB card. I don't know if other cards might be problematic or not. All I can say is that this is a safe option.
Limoncello nice too....
I am using Sandisk 64GB class10 UHS-1 card directly on the phone, from the day I got the phone, without any issues...
if you go to mediatek "engineer mode"> 3d tab "hardware testing> "IO" >"MSDC" >"MSDC SD3.0 TEST
There are various options such as "sd3 mode: sdhc highspeed, uhs sd12 etc etc.
Does anyone have more information on what these options mean and if they can bring any change in sd card recognition?
just wanted to share i had a sandisk transcend class 10 32 gb, 2 weeks ago i got my chinese 512 gb class10 sdhc as for test purpose for 9$ of ebay. in benchmarks it scores better.
however all works, currently i am on the phoenix rom with exfat file system support.
i just installed my 64gb sd card, and let the phone format it as portable sd card. now i have 59G ! this is under 1606 Cuoco92 custom rom.
Anyone else get any errors when formatting their SD Card? I have a Samsung 64GB
