g1 rooting question - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

to root my g1 do i need to have the internet plan? i ask this because i am wondering if i resets the phone and i must enter the gmail to register

Yes, you will need to sign in to a gmail account. I don't think you need a data plan for that though... Wifi or using someone else data plan simcard will work too!

There is a way to get into Android without entering a gmail address by setting the provisioned property. It's more complex than necessary though. If you have a gmail account then just use it. Register using wifi if you don't have a data plan. There is a sticky in the development forum on how to do it.

Getting going on my MDA

I have an unlocked MDA device with the data posted in my sig as to the ROM etc.............
I have service with CENTENNIAL and want to set up the device for internet etc.............I have the data enabled from the carrier but they dont sell this device
What do I need to know and do to set up the device to pick up data from the GPRS net..............
Anyone please help, also is there a "generic ROM" for this device etc
Starting from scratch........OR can I just use the device to dial up my earthlink provider and access the net and email that way?
well just get the wap config from them and if they use proxies and that should be all
I got the information after about three calls, seems folks dont like you to use a phone from another company and skurp thier data, (which you pay for LOL!)
CENTENNIAL WIRELESS
VPN private.centennialwireless.com
USER privuser
PW priv
That was entered/subsituted for the T Mobile information under the communcations area setup......
This took me hours to figure out as there is no data
I can now surf internet and GET email from EARTHLINK but having trouble sending email via hte device, it says none of the addresses are good, so I have to see what setting there I need......etc
THanks

How to password protect data connection?

OK, I did a search and came up with nothing.
I feel dumb for asking this, but can't figure it out on my tilt. I don't have the unlimited data plan because ATT rapes me $45 to have it, so how do I put a password so that whenever it tried to connect to the ATT data network, it will popup with a password screen and ask me to enter it, otherwise it won't connect.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know of anyway to lock the data connection. There are some kiosk programs that will let you lock tha applications that may call for data though.
Well when I had my 6700 on verizon I could edit the connection settings and put a password for the data. There has got to be a way to do this. Pretty disappointing if its unable to work that way. I can't be the only one who has ever wanted to do this.
If your just wanting to prevent it from connecting unless you allow it to prevent random charges then this is what you need.

Setting up the internet...

Ok im confused do i get the Hotspot or the BlackBerry Unlimited Add-on for my tilt phone to get the internet to work
Well, since XDA-Developers is NOT your wireless provider, you might want to search.
1.Do you have the feature added to your account?
2.what rom are you using
3.did you search the forum

Bear in mind that each network calls their service something different, what you really want to be asking (I think, based upon your statement) is do I select wifi or GPRS/3g/HSDPA. Wifi (hotspot) coverage isnt really going to help you unless you only want internet connection in certain places.
GPRS/3G/HSDPA is for mobile internet browsing/email retrieval etc, and thats probably more along the lines of what you want.

Agh... Can't setup Gmail

Ok... I'm going nuts. I am trying to setup someones Hero on Sprint with a work Gmail account (not @Gmail, it is Gmail small business). I know she has a data connection because I can browse the internet but any time I try and add the Gmail account, it hangs for ~2 minutes and then says it can't add the account because I may have an inconsistent data connection. This occurs on CDMA, company WiFi or even when I'm broadcasting my MyTouch 4G's HSPA via WiFi and the Hero picks it up. The exact error is:
" Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care"
Anyone have any ideas? I've reboot, cleared data on Gmail but can't think of anything else.

Can't connect to Exchange Server on T-Mobile

Hi All!
I have a very strange situation and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I am using BlueMail to connect to my work email via exchange. When I am on WiFi everything works great. The strange behavior starts when I switch over to mobile data.
When I am on mobile data I can't connect to the exchange server to read email. I am notified of any new emails. I see who they are from and the subject but I get a connection failed error any time I try to read the email. I've even gone into the settings to try and test the connection and on mobile data that connections fails every time. So I tried a few things:
1. I tried another email client. In this case I tried the GMAIL app and the Outlook app that is in the Play store. Once again both can connect on WiFi but not on mobile data.
2. I tried hotspotting my phone and then trying to connect via my laptop. I was not able to connect to the exchange server over my hotspot using mobile data.
3. I tried using my VPN service on my OP3T over mobile data. Then I tried connecting to Exchange. This works!
My carrier is T-Mobile. I am wondering if they are somehow blocking exchange access. Has anyone on T-Mobile experienced something similar?
That is quite interesting. From the sounds of it, yes something is delimiting data transfer. The thing is Exchange ActiveSync works over port 443 as do most https websites. As that data is encrypted from the server side to your client device, T-mobile would have no way to say you have new mails but not actually show you the mail as the encrypted traffic would disallow that. Just for that little fact, it sounds like this might be something Exchange side and you are in conflict with a policy on the server.
As VPN would make Exchange think you are on the local network, that may be why it works in that instance. as it suddenly find you in conformance with policy.
As to what that policy may be to lock you out, I can not think of an out of box Exchange rule that would do that. Does your company utilize an MDM servicing application? If you are rooted, and they are enforcing a block on rooted devices, that could be a cause.
When I connect over VPN I'm not connecting to work. I'm connecting to a PIA server in the US. Also when I'm connecting over WiFi I'm connecting from any WiFi (including my home WiFi). WiFi works 100% of the time.
You could be right in that the issue could be on the exchange server but I'm using the same device over WiFi and over VPN. If there is an issue with root policy on the exchange server side one would think I'd have the issue every time I try to connect. That being said I know nothing about exchange nor my employer's policy.
It's certainly an interesting issue. I have a work around but I'd like to understand what is going on.
I am still suspecting T-Mobile somehow. My coworker (who is on AT&T) can connect using mobile data on his iPhone. He didn't do anything special or talk to IT about the policy. Anyone here checking an exchange account on their 3T on T-Mobile?

I am actually using Exchange Activesync myself over T-Mobile. Had it on Oxygen OS, CM 13/14, and now I'm on RR.
Issue free.
Best of luck on this. Very interested to see what the issue may be (as you may have guessed, I'm one of the exchange admins)

If I figure it out I will definitely post here. I am still scratching my head.
