Why can't I install XP? - Shift Development

I have a USB DVD drive that the Shift Bios recognises and I can tell it to boot from it, but it just won't start the install process from an XP disk (I have two versions and neither work AT ALL although they have done on an old laptop in the past). I've also tried copying an iso image to a USB stick (which is also recognised) but nothing happens - Vista just starts up.
I've not read anything about anyone else having any problems installing XP itself, so what am I missing/ doing wrong?!
HELP! I'm so bored with Vista being so slow...

i intstalled the xp the first day i got my HTC SHIFT. i got no cd rom drive . so i try to clean install xp sp3 using ide external 30g hdd. well , it works!! the most important things is it must be a bootable drive. OK this is wat i do, i make the 30gb hdd bootable and put in the xp source inside the disk to make it direct install. follow this link to make ur hdd bootable http://wiki.eeeuser.com/windowsxpusb .
the whole process so fast that end up in 3 hours include all driver . bytheway...i do make a external partition first. i make around 25 GB .

Boot-menu
Hi,
If Vista starts, I guess the shift doesn't really boot from the dvd drive.
You'll have to make it boot from the external DVD drive in the boot-menu.
You can get to the boot-menu by pressing F10 (Fn+0) when the Shift is booting.
If you did this and it still doesn't work, I have no idea....
You might want to consider installing windows 7 beta. It is a lot faster then Vista.
I have both XP and 7 installed. I still can't really choose which is better......
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah

Thanks for the advice. Still getting nowhere...
I followed the link hcping sent and set up a USB key as a bootable version of Windows XP but keep getting the same error message when I boot from it:
"Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart"
and hey ho Vista appears AGAIN. There are no other drives, disks or media connected... only a partitioned hard drive and the USB key.
It's SOO frustrating and Vista takes SO long to shut down each time it doesn't bother to install WinXP
Any other bright ideas? I'll have a dig around and see if I can find a spare HDD to try from that, but I think it'll have the same issues as the USB key.
On the bright side I did find out that I own 3 USB to mini-USB cables that only seem to be able to provide power to my HTC Diamond and fail to transfer any data. I didn't know that was possible!!! but it did go some way to explain why my external DVD write only works with certain cables....

to stamstables
try the bootable usb flash on other pc to test first.
then if success ,do try it on HTC SHIFT.
try press Fn+F10 to test the device whether it recognise or not.see for the choice.
if you c another device other than your hdd, then that means bios recognise the device. but if it direct go vista ..which means the device is not bootable .and you just have to make the device (usb flash, usb hdd , anything) bootable.
if all failed then....dunno......
if you got enuf gut to delete the whole partition ..i mean c drive. and install from usb hdd or others usb device.. can be a choice too.....but if failed...use the recovery from the hidden partition. take a chance ..since you cant do anything if the device wont boot up

Aha! The Bootable USB key I made using USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd doesn't work... but I just made another TWO versions (one from a computing running XP and one from Vista) and the Vista one doesn't begin to work for some reason - the XP one file \WIN_NT$.~BT\biosinfo.inf "could not be loaded. Error code 18".
Am trying Windows7 instead now

Help my SD Card Wont Mount

I can access my sd card through a reader but I can't access my phone through usb (but it still charges). I have 2 partitions, one is fat32 (with some music, pictures and stuff) and another is ext3 (i reformatted it last night thinking it might be that but it wasn't)
Basically, I've tried it on xp, vista, win7 but win7 and vista it says it has malfunctioned and then when I go device manager its called unknown device
I have used swapper and most likely did try to mount my phone which I've heard screws up your card. So before I do it do I need to reformat my fat32 partition and if I do have to should I reformat it to fat32 or fat?
Or is there another solution?
Thank you
Have you tried formatting it from within the G1. settings->sd card -> format? You'll want Fat32 if formatting elsewhere, also if you want multiple partitions I'd try formatting the whole card first, then partitioning/formatting again.
Make sure you have a drive letter assigned to the FAT32 partition. (Eg. F:/)
hmmm
On xp it just says unknown device, I've reformated from my pc (the fat32 partition) maybe it would be an idea to do it from the phone. I just don't know what to do tbh I mean its weird. Do you think its to do with app2sd?
hmm
And I can't sign a driver letter because it doesn't come up with mount on my phone all it does it charge

Are you using the data cable that came with the phone? I lost mine a while back and tried using just a regular USB to Type A (the port on the phone) on the phone and got the same results. It'll use the power from the USB drive but won't mount or even connect.
Also, you might want to try to install the Android USB Driver for Windows. It's floating around here somewhere, just do a search for it.
If you have adb installed there's a command called ?adb kill server? or something like that. Sry on phone right now but a google search should help. Sometimes this process has been knows to fix similar problems where the pc doesn't recognize the phone. Not sure why it woult effect mass storage tho. But wth worth a try I suppose.
Well I'm using the data cable that came with the phone, adb remount just gives error:device not found and I have usb drivers because I have used this phone on this laptop before so you know
This is annoying
I've tried reflashing my spl but still no dice, I just dont get it :S
Like everyone else has stated, Format your entire card to fat32 and setup your partitions again. That should do it. the SPL doesn't really affect it. GL
Ill have a go
Right I'm going to have a go now
Ill tell you my results
Good luck Kushion!
I had the same problem only my sd card would actually show and mount for a second then unmount. I finally gave up and went and bought an sd card .
this is what I do now.
vm ware player http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
I believe with this running and a guest os I can mount the sd card.
I know for sure that I can do it with ubuntu but im not completely sure with windows 7.
This is also good for "sandboxing" programs or testing files to see if they have a virus. by running the guest os in the virtual software you are not infecting your main os . I use it when i wanna test things but dont wanna run the risk of borking my main os.
god daaaaaaaaammit
right I have deleted the ext3 partiton and then reformated it all to fat32, I then wiped, I then reinstalled cyragon firmware and booted and guess what...
doing the same thing :|
It lets in power but doesn't let me mount, doesnt even give me the option
I am having the same exact problem. My work computer, have always used it, same cable, same everything, then all of the sudden today I came to work, had some downtime was going to mess with my phone and it won't recognize my phone. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers at least ten times but to no avail. Any help greatly appreciated.

I know this is a bit old, but the topic got bumped and I saw this one... I do most of my "work" on my phone here at the office, and just use a standard MiniUSB cord with no problem. Not that you're the first one I've heard say that, but I don't think your phone (or PC?) is working right if that is the problem.. The ExtUSB cable that comes with the phone has standard data pins, just extra headset pins - that's the only difference.

Reboot the PC? Maybe an obvious question, but just in case. And.. It sounds like you have a reasonable level of admin access to the PC, but just in case - are you sure your employer hasn't blocked mass storage devices? I'm in IT myself, so I can use it on my PC.. But if I tried to plug my G1 into any of our other PCs here, it would happily charge away but never mount the drive, due to our security policies.
Wow old thread but similar problem...
My wife's G1 won't mount to pc as a mass storage device, however mine does without a problem. I have the drivers, sdk. I can see the phone through adb, it just won't mount. Also, I've tried it on both our pc's which are win7 x64. Check sig for phone details.

Flashing P3600 in Vista

Hi,
I'm trying to flash my Trinity in Vista, but when I run the rom update utility, it goes to bootloader and although I hear the sound of a USB device connected and the phone itself says "USB" on the boot loader, I get the error 260 and it says there's no connection.
I tried plugging, and unplugging a few times.
I tried to change the USB settings on the windows mobile device center.
I even tried SD flashing, renamed file, formatted FAT32 with sandisk 2gb and transcend 2gb but the phone doesn't leave the boot loader.
I have not access to an XP machine.
Can anyone who managed to flash in Vista share some advice?
Thanks.

I followed this tutorial last night:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=FlashVista
and it worked - after that I was able to successfully flash
Hard SLP and Radio from my Vista laptop.
NOTE: In step 5. it is said:
'INSTEAD choose the SECOND option "Browse my computer for driver software". '
- That didnt work for me (VIsta didnt install the driver), I had to:
'...chose to select driver From Disk, and browse to the files you have extracted'
In case you're wandering I followed this tread for HardSLP/Radio flashing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4409454&postcount=1
Hope it helps
May have a solution to this as it works for me but I'm new to forum so have no idea if it is an offense to put a link here and redirect them to another forum.
Dear Moderators, if it is wrong of me to do so, kindly do not penalised me, just delete my post will do can? thanks

Help! No USB... no SD card... now what?

Hi, my Touch HD is still under warranty but I'm running Hard SPL 1.56.Olinex.
My USB is not working, it just charges my phone. My SD Card reader is also not working... So I can only connect via BT and I can't find any way of restoring SPL without USB/SD... Is it impossible?

Do u try a HARD RESET? If you try a Hard Reset and still have the same Problem you can do some of the things.. tell me witch ROM u use.. maybe the USB problem that don`t wana sync is from the ROM.. also sometimes when you flash a 6.5 ROM the CARD is not visable one FOrmat normaly will clear the things but its bad when you cannot conetc to format via PC
The Best you can do is to flash Another ROM via SD Card but 1st you need to make your SD card working so if you have some SD adapter or some other device that you can take out your SD card from the Phone and conect it directly to the PC will be perfect to FORMAT it.. Once the problem with your CArd is fixed you can just put there some new ROM and Flash the Device...
Its very Bad when on the same time the USB and Card not working but don`t worry you can fix the things but its not so easy.
I'm running official HTC Touch HD_MR_2009_RUU_BlackStone_HTC_PTG_1.56.410.0_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe... I can connect to PC via BT and copy files...

Yes but the NEW Cooocked ROm is around 170MB so you will need few days to copy this via BT also when your SD card not working this is not posible because the ROM file must to be located in the root of the SD card
Now i understand that you use STOCK ROM so the best you can do is to go in HTC service for Warranty i was thinking you have a problem with Coocked ROM but when is with STOCK ROM its not your fault.
The problem is that I've installed Hard Spl... If I take it to HTC they probably are gonna say it's not covered by warranty...
If you use usb to charge your phone than datacommunication with your pc has to work.
Which OS are you running, because when you entering the bootloader your pc doesn't see your phone as a mobile device anymore.
If you're running WMDC and entering the bootloader than Vista or W7 is searching for new drivers..... If not found read this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524619
For XP you have to install the drivers yourself.
They can also be found in the link.
When the drivers are installed en your phone is synced than it will show USB in bootloader.
After that flash back to stock SPL
Hopefully this is will help you, your problem is very strange
Because of a not workin SD card and a not working USB
I wish you luck!
Thx! I'll give it a try tonight... but I don't think that will help because I've hard-reset the device and tried with Windows 7 and Windows XP and nor the phone nor the pc show any message.
I remember that the SD card did show up, but after a few seconds it would disappear... But now it never shows up... Already changed usb options on control panel...
The last thing I did when the SD was ok was trying Android with no luck.
I believe it's really an hardware problem and maybe I could replace the board that has SD/USB/SIM but would like to use my warranty....
If you update usb drivers there's a good chance that your device will show up on pc. Don't forget to 'enable usb connections' in activesync connections settings
Also if this doesn't work try flashing orginal stock rom which came with your device. This rom, and only this rom, will still flash as long as you are connected to pc (doesn't need to say 'usb' at bottom of bootloader). Alternatively try MTTY
Rick
I had a very similar problem when I last tried andriod. first of all my sd card dropped off, It would go in, be seen and then drop again as soon as I tried to access it. Android had corrupted it. Try reformatting your SD card fat32, copy the rom on and try updating the ROM again using your SD card.
It also busted my pc drivers on my pc, I had to uninstall them completely and then load the latest drivers. If you have another pc try it on this first before faffing with your USB drivers.
Once my sd card was back I couldnt flash any roms, no usb connection. I did a hard reset and then went into spl manually and set it running that didnt seem to work but when my phone rebooted usb was backup.
It seems andriod manager to corrupt my ROM, SD card and uSB drivers on my PC, I havent bothered with Android since and wont until there is a bootable ROM available (never)?
Your USB cable may be bad. Sometimes they stop working and pc communications stops. I've had to replace my usb cables from time to time.

Last time I had something like this, I had to remove the HD from windows mediaplayer. For some reason it was there as plain "storage card" if I remember correctly. After that I could connect normally with the HD again.
*Have you verified that your SD Card is actually working at all?
*-I've had a problem in the past with an "old" SD Card that wouldn't recognise properly in either my PC or my phone. Turns out all i had to do was clean the contacts on it lightly. My original 8Gb SD Card that came with my Blackstone has also completely died. It will not format, will recognise then drop-off and attempting to use it in ANY manner resulted in it becoming excessively hot - Dead card, not replaceable under warranty
*If the SD Card works in your PC, have you tried formatting it to "Device Defaults" via the PC?
*-This problem has in the past also prohibited me from using my SD Card in my Blackstone. For some devices, without certain registry tweaks enabled, only particular formats of SD Cards are recognised. I have also noticed that the card must be formatted in a particular way to be useable as a ROM Flashing card. The Blackstone simply won't read any images from the card in bootloader mode if the card is formatted improperly.
* Try another USB Cable, being able to charge via USB does NOT mean it WILL sync, for example, if your USB cable has bent/damaged contacts, or if the cable itself has a broken lead, the VCC (voltage core) and GND (ground) leads can still create a circuit to send power to the device which will enable it to charge.
*-Also try other USB ports... you never know when one maybe too dusty / dirty / faulty
* Windows 7 / Vista? Uninstall Window Mobile Device Centre (WMDC) re-download and reinstall, or allow Windows Update to do this for you after you've uninstalled. A simple registry error can fark this right up. I should know, as I recently accidentally imported my Blackstone's registry backup to my laptop... ugh that was a nightmare. Windows 7 recovered, but I spent a few days browsing with the wrong user-agent, meaning a lot of websites were redirecting to their "mobile" or "wap" counterparts...ewwww
* Windows XP? Well I can't say too much there, as I haven't used it pretty much since Vista was released years ago. Just do your best to make sure all drivers are updated appropriately.
other sd card
have you tired a different sd card there are known issues with some types of cards sd vs' sdhc and class 2 vs' class 6 cards. Also you may have a bad usb cable? Do you have .net framework installed. are you trying all this on the same computer you used to flash your phone with hspl. You can try putting your phone into bootloader mode wait for usb to appear on the bottom of the tri-color screen and then reflash stock spl from there by opening the BlackstoneRUUWrapper and going through the steps it should see your phone. See the wiki!
And why did you hspl if you have a stock rom?
I did a sim-unlock and didn't restore the spl after the process... I was waiting for the perfect 6.5 ROM...
I didn't have time to test it yesterday but I brought it with me and will try again later...
I already tested the SD in other Windows Mobile phones and was ok... The SD is not the original (Transcend) but a SanDisk 8GB but already tried it with a 2GB SD and nothing. Also tried with different cables. And in different PCs (windows xp and Windows 7). Also did a hard-reset.
Nothing worked! When I enter bootloader with usb cable connected there is no SERIAL and no USB message, but if I remove the cable it changes to SERIAL and doesn't change anymore. On the PC, with XP, W7 and Ubuntu, nothing happens... lsusb gives nothing... on device manager it doesn't show up.
Regarding the SD card, when I insert it the screen turns on, but still no storage card detected... I really think it's an hardware problem.... I ordered this, just in case, http://cnn.cn/shop/touch-simmicrousb-card-module-p-7149.html, but will still try to take it to warranty before because there is a seal over one of the screws...
Thank you all!

Nexus One Mass Storrage Windows 7 64 Bit

I've been having trouble getting my nexus one to work as a mass storage device. I will mount sd and then it unmounts on its on. Tried on 32 bit system and it worked perfect. I can mount in recovery fine and i can use adb fine but not mass storage. I tried installing the drivers on here for 64 bit and it works for a little but if i restart my phone it starts unmounting and i have to reinstall drivers. i also tried installing pdanet and it works but same issue after restarting phone. any help would be appreciated
i've had no issues on win7 64bit mounting it, ive only done it once though, i prefer adb or i ftp files from pc to phone.
Using Win7 64bit here too....no probs...hmm..
Same here using Windows 7 64 bit no problems to report. I copied 3 gig music at one time to the SD and it worked fine.
I had the same problems.
The only way I could get it back to mounting again (and the not-mounting problem hasn't returned) was to:
1) Go into 'Devices and Printers'. (Start Button/'Devices and Printers'
2) Right Click on Nexus One and eject.
3) Disconnect usb cable and reconnect and then try to mount from N1 again...
I was thinking that the problem probably started because of my network mounts and then my usb hub on my monitor with all the card reader options as well. I think my drive letters got a little conflicted.
I had to fixed all that first in the Disk Management.
Hope that helps. I was really frustrated with not being able to mount the last couple of days.
Using Win7 64bit here and no issues. Mounted a few times to transfer music and pics.
i have no idea whats wrong. it works fine on my 32bit laptop. mass storage works in recovery. Its confusing
Manually seek and install driver?
I couldn't get it to work on windows 7 pro 64bit with administrator rights. With a user without admin rights, it worked fine!
I already tried manually installing and i have admin rights on windows 7 64 bit ultimate
there are 2 drivers you have to install from the androidsdk. device drivers and usb drivers. install through devmgmt.msc, browse to correct folders in android sdk to install.
You don't need the device drivers to use mass storage. You just need the usb drivers, which should have installed when you first plugged the phone in.
Have you got the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver installed on your pc?
I have the exact same issue with win 7 64bit home premium. No problem on winxp 32 at work. Also no problems with my ubuntu 64 bit set up. It also works fine in recovery mode.
a long time ago I called HTC about this, because it happened right after I got the phone in January and the official HTC response was, 64 bit os's are not supported!
I had the same issue. It all basically came down to not "safely removing" the storage before unplugging.
Did your computer flag the micro SD card as not safely removed and does it want to scan it for errors when you plug it in? This was happening to me. Apparantly Nexus was somehow choking on the attempt to "repair" and it simply unmounted the card. One day I took the card out of my Nexus, put it into a card reader and let Windows check it for errors. After that, I didn't experience any auto-unmounting anymore.
Actually I'm lying
Another problem was the underpowered USB hub which I use. If you use a hub, try connecting directly to your PC.
Ironically, since flashing back to stock rom (just fiddling around cos I was bored ) I've just had this issue of Win7 64bit not being able to recognise/access the sd card of my N1. Here's how I fixed it:
1. Plug phone into PC.
2. Turn on USB storage from dropdown menu on phone.
3. Go to Device Manager in Windows.
4. Find 'Android Phone' in Device Manager.
5. Right-click and choose 'Update Driver Software'.
6. Choose the 'Browse my computer for driver software' option.
7. Choose 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer' option.
8. You'll now see 'Android ADB device' and 'USB Mass Storage Device'. Choose the latter and click next.
Windows should reinstall the mass storage driver and the sd card should mount in windows.
If you haven't installed Android SDK in the past then you'll not have an 'Android Phone' in device manager. In this case look in the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers and follow 5-8 above but right-clicking 'USB Mass Storage Device' instead.
Note: I'd done a format of my sd card before plugging in the phone so if the method doesn't work try that (assuming you've nothing on there that you want to keep).
^ that's what i was trying to say

[Q] Can't get access to removable disc on my HTC's

Hi I have some really strange problems with accessing my 16 GB SD-card from my PC.
First of all the SD is OK. I can see how much space is used on it in HTC Sync, I can browse the files with Astro and Read/Write to it.
However I can not for the life of me figure out how to access my SD car from my pc. I plug the phone into my pc and choose disc drive. The SD then pops up as a removable disc in MY Computer, it does not say how much space is available or how much I've used. When i try to click on it it says "Please insert a disk into Removable Disc(Q"
When I go to Device manager and click properties on HTC Android Phone USB Device it says that the driver is from Microsoft(?) and that the driver Version is 6.1.7600.16385(?)
I figured something happened here and removed the driver, rebooted and plugged in the SD-card that came with the phone into the phone figuring I would install the drivers from the SD, however the Microsoft driver automatically installs itself again and I'm stuck in a loop.
I've also tried my HTC Desire, my HTC Hero and my girlfriends HTC Wildfire same problem.
Any tips on how to fix this? I got some save games etc on another HTC I got (HTC Desire) that I really want to copy to my Incredible S.
do you have an ext(2-4) partition on it ? This can cause it. Otherwise try to pull it trough adb (or share through dropbox or alike). And than reformat it. Sometimes it gives weird results in windows and the main fix i found here is to copy it a different way and format it again.
No ext(2-3) partition on it. I'm starting to thing it's my pc since it's the same problem on 4 phones :/
Than it probably is your driver or something... have you tried a linux live cd or something to see if it works? With that computer problem i cannot help you, perhaps someone else
o yeah, maybe try a different usb port sometimes that works...
It's definitively my drivers. Tried it on my older laptop (travel-only pc) and it worked like a charm there, now I just have to find out how to get the correct drivers to work on my computer since it didn't work last time
Reinstall htc sync, replug the phone.
If that don't work, try updating your driver manually, driver should be known
You can also alter the Android Google usb driver (adb) to work with the incredible s. But I'm not going to explain that when typing on my phone hh.

I've also tried my HTC Desire, my HTC Hero and my girlfriends HTC Wildfire same problem.
Any tips on how to fix this? I got some save games etc on another HTC I got (HTC Desire) that I really want to copy to my Incredible S.

Uninstall HTC Sync and use the generic windows driver..... it will detect as a memory drive.... or use Linux enviornment to use ur memory card as a usb drive if u have problems with windows.... !!!
It works like charm on linux... i use linux so its rather easy... plug and play... no unnecessary sync problems
