I have some questions about tethering and mounting - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wanted to know can i mount my g1 to my ps3 or xbox 360 so that i can read videos and music from it?
I also wanted to know if i can tether with my xbox 360 or ps3. Like connect to the g1 network on the ps3? And play online with the 3g network.

Haha I'm not the only one. I can't help you with mounting the drive unfortunately but I set my G1 up to tether to my Wii. I have dialup at home and even EDGE is 10-20x as fast and I have WiFi set up just for file sharing and the likes. But you have to have an existing WiFi connection (unless the PS3 or XBOX360 can connect to Ad-Hoc, the Wii can't, if they can just use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474470 ) and set up iptables properly, explains it in the post, it's simple enough and then set the gateway to the phone's IP and you must have a DNS server, I use openDNS just set the DNS server primary to 208.67.222.222 and if you have the option secondary to 208.67.220.220. I hope this helps, if it's not clear enough just let me know what you need help with and I will do my best to walk you through it.
EDIT: I'm a retard I left you without the most important link. Here is the link for the part where you have an existing WiFi router setup. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444004

Lol. I live a mile too far into the country to get cable or DSL and about 60 miles from fiber in St. Louis. Funny how I have 5 bars EDGE all through the area and full AT&T 3G signal on my iPhone 15 miles away but I can't get cable. Oh well, that's what I pay for unlimited data for, and as soon as I get 3G i'll use my iPhone to tether instead of my G1.

to cannon you need your sd card formated to fat32 that should work. If not the only real way is to download linux to your ps3.
EDIT: i didn't read the topic and see you did was i bout to explain to you
genius based on what you just said i can help you get a connection to your wii and to everything in your house for tht matter anyone with a router i can help pm me and i walk you by the steps it take a minttue but it surely worth it. I once play (well set-up) my ps3 over a free dial-up connection (less then 56k) so i can surely help you.

Thanks for the offer but atm I got it set up but it is a PITA. I had to turn the router into just access point mode, turn off dhcp on the router, set the wii up with openDNS, and manage to set up iptables the hard way instead of just the AdHoc "tether start" command. If yours is any simpler please just let me know and I'll gladly listen lol.

i dont think you can mount the g1 to 360..
but on a ps3 you can.. i tried. i was able to transfer movies, music, and pics from ps3 to g1 and vice versa.
and you can wifi tether the g1 to the ps3 but 3g speeds is not fast enough.. plus what phone carriers dont tell u is that theres a data cap. so unlimited data is really not unlimited.
the g1 has a 10gig cap per month and the iphone has 5gig.
so playing online will quickly reach that cap and you will be slowed down to 50k for the remainder of the billing period.

NAT + Tllt + WifiRouter + XBox live question.......(HELP)

Here's my situation:
I've been using my Tilt as a Wifi router to play with my friends on Xbox live because my university's internet blocks Xbox live. I've been using the WMWifiRouter program and it works flawlessly. The 3G speeds could be better, but hey, I'm not complaining.
Well my problem is that whenever we try to join somebody else's party on Xbox live it won't allow us because it says our "NAT type is strict". What does this mean? Also, other players are unable to join our party.
But, whenever we do matchmaking it works fine. It's just that we can't play with our other friends outside of the dorms because we're not on the same internet connection. We can only play with the random people that we're assigned to play with via matchmaking.
I realize this is a vary narrow subject, but I'm hoping there's somebody out there who can help me.
How could I go about changing my NAT type? Is there a way to make it open?

When I got this error I had to upgrade the firmware on the router connected to my x360. but because you are using your phone as the router, you obviously cannot do that. The 360 has a limited amount of routers that it's compatible with, so I'd say your stuck with strict NAT until you leave you dorm room.
The NAT type will most likely be controlled by the software you are using to share the connection (unless your phone network uses NAT). Try a different piece of software (if there is one )
Do you know if WMWifiRouter can do port forwarding because that may help with the problem?
Not sure but sounds like you can't host cause you going through a proxy and unlike cable or dsl and so on you not getting a real internet IP address for others to join you. Just a thought.....
Stop playing COD4 and you will be fine. . i opened up the DMZ on my router and it fixed my problem.
Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. But I feel obligated to comment on how amazingly awesome that is.
You have to open ports on the router (or in this case your phone). To do this you will need to know the assigned IP of the Xbox, and use the port forwarding feature on WiFiRouter.
Here is a tutorial on setting up the xbox and ports:

hey i tried something similar to this but i never got it working. i shared my interent concetion to my laptop and then set up network sharing from there to my xbox but it failed at dns on the test.
can any one think of a way to do this with out the wifi adapter for the 360?

Tilt to wireless router to laptop

Sorry if this is a repeat question. I looked through the archive, but couldn't find this question.
I haven't bought the Tilt yet, but what I want to be able to do is take a Tilt have it be connected to the 3G network and then connect to my wireless router as well. From there I would connect my laptop to the same wireless router but somehow use the 3G internet connection on the laptop. Is this easily doable?
I want to do this since when I get home I want to just keep the phone in one location where I get good reception and then be able to use my laptop where ever I move it in my house without having to move the phone and risk losing connection.
I will be buying a tethering plan.
Thanks for the help.
haven't tried this but i think u should be able to if u have internet sharing enabled.
Does the tilt come with internet sharing?
yes
but let me get this straight, you want to connect it this way
3G->tilt->router->pc
why do that when you can do
3G->tilt->pc
search for ics control, or wmwifirouter
Yes I was thinking the first way. I am not opposed to the second way, but I was curious how much range will a tilt give me as far as broadcasting on wifi?
I often watch tv in my basement and wasn't sure if the tilt wifi would be able to travel as well as my router which has an external antenae. Range was the only reason I introduce the router. It seems wmwifirouter may support what I want to do.
Well considering the phone can follow the laptop anywhere I would say range isn't a question. It's all wireless with batterys

HELP before I go crazy, ATT Tilt-Wii

Please Help, I am not IT, but here is my situation and problem, I HAVE: ATT Tilt, Linksys wireless router, Bluetooth, USB internet sharing, I WANT: have no idea how to set up my system to give my Wii internet access. I live in the country so I have no options for wired internet. ATT MediaNet is my only choice. I have unlimited data 3G through my Tilt
So your aim is to give your Wii access to the internet via your Tilt, do I understand correctly?
If so probably the easiest way is by using WMWifiRouter? I guess that should do it and it makes configuration very easy - Google it.
Failing that I think there might be some stuff in the Kaiser pages of the Wiki about sharing internet over Wifi - as above though, I don't think the Wii needs anything special that WMWifiRouter couldn't sort out, and configuration is very simple using that app. I might be wrong and perhaps there is something it can't do which the Wii would need, but helpfully enough there's a trial version available that would let you test...
Regards,
Rob.
First thing that comes to my mind is installing the software called "WMWifi Router" on your Tilt and trying to connect your Wii wirelessly (if i'm right it comes with Nintendo Wi-Fi connection).
goodluck
Caution: You are going to use your Tilt as a modem. You may be entering into the TETHERING world. If you upload/download too much stuff to the Wii via the Tilt, AT&T may wack you some hefty charges.
Google tethering on this site to become aware of the possible consequences. You may need to buy a tethering plan from ATT.
wmwifirouter doesn't support some things and it may not support the Wii. If that doesn't work just use internet connection sharing to your computer and then run ethernet or use adhoc wireless to share the internet to the wii from the computer. Use google or help to figure that all out. It's not hard to do.

Internet sharing dilemmas...

This is a 2-part dilemma...
1.) is there a way to use my Wi-fi and data plan as a gateway for internet access with the computers in my home? I want to be able to turn on the Wi-fi, and the phone will become an access point and its internet connection comes from my data plan... I guess this can be done with a T-mobile G1.
2.) the way I do it now is that I hook it up via USB to a computer, and that works pretty well. Problem is, if I disconnect it via software function on the phone or just yank the USB plug out, I have to re-boot my phone before the internet sharing will work again. This gets annoying. Anyone else experience this and/or know if there's a fix?
Or am I just dumb and want everything on a silver platter?
are these computers connect in a network. I am sure it can easily be done by internet connection sharing just have all the computers connect to your pc for a connection.
I thought about doing that--basically an internet share to an internet share. That WOULD work, but I was hoping for something a bit simpler. i am not a hardcore computer user like I was back in the day where I had to have at least 3 computers running 24/7 in order to cope with life. LOL. I was hoping for a setup where I can just walk in the door from a crappy day at work, plug my phone into the charger where it gets its best signal, and just leave it there and the rest will take care of itself. I am close to being able to do that with my Xlink bluetooth cellular gateway. Once I am home, there's no reason why I have to carry my phone around the house, as my hard-wired phones in the house ring through my cellular and I can make calls from them
The other option is to quit being a cheap turd and get a $30/mo internet connection for my computers, which is faster than the EDGE service I get here at home. But I live alone and don't download big stuff anymore or play multiplayer games, etc
I think the concept in question is one that has been batted around here for some time: Can the Kaiser be used as an access point with an internet connection?
As far as anyone's been able to tell, no. The phone's wifi chip(or part of a chip that does wifi) would need to support AP mode (access point mode) where in it receives and routes multiple wifi connections' data between each other and the GPRS hardware. As far as anyone's been able to tell, the wifi capabilities in the phone are limited to single-connection only, so allowing multiple devices to connect (or even 1, unless the desired device can get internet via adhoc or bluetooth) is not possible.
You can use the WiFi connection sharing. What it does is take your EDGE or 3G connection and set your phone up as an "access point". I put that in parenthesis because it creates an "ad-hoc" network that only certain devices can detect and connect to. Ad-Hoc is a device to device network, where the normal is infrastructure mode. Also being the device it is, I'm not sure if it's going to be an intelligent network device, IE.. iTunes music sharing between local connected clients. But you can most certainly share your connection with your laptops or desktops if they have WiFi. I'll see if I can find the cab for you and post it here.
EDIT: Here you go... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4175565&postcount=90
Cool. I will look into that! I pretty much only have one computer running at a time these days, and the EDGE connection isn't all that fast to be sharing it among multiple computers anyway.
why...
Hi,
Not sure if i understand... why would someone use the "crappy" internet connection of a phone to get internet access to your home network...
It's 2009. Why not get a decent cable or DSL account

$ 30.00 for your phone data connection + $ 45.00 for your home cable/DSL connection = $75.00 per month, as opposed to just $30.00 for both.
To some people $ 45 dollars a month is a lot of money to save no matter how slow the connection is.
I am no expert but I found this software here a while ago and really liked it. There is an older version that is legally free but the new one is pay, try the trial.

Or you're like me and cant get anything but satellite internet where I live, which is way more expensive. Yet I get 3G just fine =)
WMWifiRouter
I like WMWifiRouter pretty well. It drains my battery like crazy, but when I have my phone plugged in, it's okay. Without being plugged in, my battery loses about 20% over ten minutes. Also, the free version doesn't really come with any admin features. The router is public and there's no way to see who's connected. Other than that, it's great!

AP Mode

Anyone have a clue, how to get this working in the hero? Adhoc just doesn't cut it.
not going to happen, the hardware does not support it.
what device or os won't join ad hoc? Ive even had ipod touch's joined to my ad hoc hero wifi network. I know windows, mac and linux will all join ad hoc too, so wtf?
Low cost Android tablets are having a lot of trouble joining ad hoc.
Ps3, or other phones
Psp! And yeah, other phones wont connect to ad-hocs either. But not being able to use game consoles is a major buzzkill.

DSL Internet? I know you already pay for your data but come on, gaming on it? Or are you counting on the lagginess to get you better KDR on mw2?

Only people who have played that sad campfest they call a game would understand how funny this comment is.
Gaming on evdo is ridiculous, but if you must do it you could always just use a pc/netbook/laptop to share the wireless connection over wired Ethernet to the console.
tethered internet from a hero is tolerable but I couldn't imagine trying to use it as a primary/only internet connection for any length of time.
why would you connect other phones to a wifi tether? each phone should already have a data plan so i don't get the point..

I have been able to setup my Linksys WRT54G with dd-wrt firmware flashed and have it use my phone's data and broadcast it through the router. The router is not inadhoc mode. I had to keep tweaking with all the settings to get it to work like I wanted. There are 2 reasons that I would not do it on a regular basis, especially if you are trying to play networked games.
1. The phone becomes really hot if you do not have it in front of a fan and can fry your phone
2. The download speed may be intermediate depending on where you are and the time of day, but the upload speeds can be very slow. Considering a majority of gamers have 6Mbs down and somewhere around 512Kbs - 1Mb up you will be falling behind.
