Market country restriction workaround? - G1 Apps and Games

Does anyone have a workaround for the Android Market country restriction?
I wanted to download the official last.fm client, but apparently it's availability is restricted to a handful of countries, and the .apk is so far not available anywhere else.
Could I somehow adjust a setting in my rooted G1 (ADP1.41) to make it appear as I'm accessing the Market from within USA? Can I make use of any of the free web proxies available, by editing a config file on my phone?
Thanks,
Christopher

When it shows in the top of feature section, you will be able to download it..

I've been waiting for it to appear in the Featured Apps bar for three days without luck. :-(
So a more permanent fix/workaround would be preferred...
Thanks,
Christopher

Hi,
Unfortunately, I think the Market restrictions are tied to the SIM card in the phone - not anything in the phone itself.
I bought my G1 in the US, unlocked, for use with a UK sim card. When this SIM card is in the phone, I couldn't get to iSkoot amongst other things, but if I put the US SIM that came with the phone (note this was not tied to a dataplan or activated even for voice!) I could then see and download iSkoot in the marketplace over WiFi.
Regards,
Dave

That's not the official last.fm personal radio application.

So I tried the obvious - removed the SIM and started the phone with just wifi connected. No problem accessing the Market, but still no last.fm personal radio application... Could be the phone remembered that my SIM was Norwegian, or that the SIM left a footprint somewhere.
Man, this is irritating.

Fake IP or fake region for Tmobile G1
I have a G1, I live in Vietnam. I know there're iskoot, truphone, linda file browser, and some awesome software on market. But I can't find them. My friend lives in US and using Tmobile, he can find and download them. Why? I paid 400 bucks for a new phone and Tmobile don't share me software from market. Please research this and develop something to help poeple not using Tmobile and from another country.

Actually the decision to restrict to country is purely by the developer of the software in question. T-Mobile isn't involved.
Here is an ongoing thread in the apps subforum discussing the matter:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=476160

yeah not very fair to you!

hey people, can anyone tell me why I can see ALL the apps and install ALL of them?
And tell me which is the app that restricted to region so I can try to see?
Im using my G1 in Vietnam with Viet Telco simcard.

as jashsu said, this is all on the dev.
however the "restraints" are there for a reason,
remember android is a "baby" the forecast for the market is (imo) when its up and running each country's devs are going to have paid apps for their region...
im guessing its to differ from the iphone store thing, sux but we still really dont know how the market is going to evolve...
a quick work around.
disable data
turn on wifi, and set a USA (or country of the app you want to get) proxy on your router (since im unable to see or find were to do this on the phone itself)
and you should be good to go...once the phone gets a USA IP everything shows up.

If I recall correctly, the official Last.fm client is such an app. Search for "last". This is what the icon looks like:

Just for reference, some possible reasons an app might be region restricted:
-Licensing: Apps may serve or contain content which the developer licenses from a third party. The terms of the license may limit the distribution of the content to certain regions. A common example is music streaming in apps like Last.fm and imeem.
-Export restrictions: The exporting of certain technologies, in particular cryptography, is subject to government regulation.
-Support: In order to support an app, the developer will have to account for factors like user support and managing bandwidth. Reducing the number of regions to distribute simplifies the task of properly supporting an app.
-Localization: An app that only gives the weather forecast of cities in China obviously has little purpose in the North America region. The developer may not want to expose it for users outside of its intended geography.

Nice find. Great app.
I keep searching but can't find this app on the market through my phone. As I live in Malaysia, I'm wondering if it is restricted to certain countries only? Is anyone else in other countries having problems finding it in the market?
While on that topic, does anyone know how the market identifies which country you are in? Via Geo-IP? or the installed SIM card? Is there a way to bypass this and download the .apks ?

i search and cant find.. not even on cyrket...since its linked i think its linked directly with the market
yes, im guessing its GeoIP bull crap ...(i really really hate that, being that im a native english speaker not living in the UK or the US, (living in panama) and endup getting all pages loading in spanish)
either way, setting a proxy "might help" i want this app just did not have the time today to test out setting up an http proxy on the phone (accessed option through anycut shortct) but it did not work.. so im guessing setting up a proxy on your router "might" work thats if u use a usa proxy.
i might just wait till someone downloads and posts the apk file here
The only thing I noticed is that its kinda quiet... Anyone else come to this conclusion? I have my phone volume & media volume at 100%. Other than that, its an awesome app!
Was waiting for Pandora but I have an account for both so it works for me

I can find it on cyrket, you have to search for last<space>fm as opposed to last<dot>fm. But can't download from cyrket so that doesn't solve much ...
Anyone got it want to post an .apk somewhere?

once i get time im going to try and hook the phone through a usa proxy from one of my servers and see if the market brings up more apps
I had the same problem, then I saw it on the list of featured apps and I downloaded it. Strange I know. Just try to refresh the list of featured apps until you get it, it might solve your problem for now. I do not reside in the US, so It might not be a location issue, unless the featured app is an oversight!

thanks for the tip, will try, still hasn't popped up for me on the featured apps, though the market must be filtering applications based on geo location
though now we know the featured apps is exempt from that filter (for now)
hehe ... it appeared on Featured Apps in the browser and I quickly grabbed it. Playing fine now.
Could someone attach the APK?

This is actually a characteristic of Android and not the Last.fm app in particular. Android (as well as some other embedded operating systems) is designed so that app lifecycles are managed by the os, not the user. Working as intended.
jashu - Yes, I know that android will monitor apps and close ones that are not used for a long time, I actually like that. What I mean is that the last time I used the app was Friday when I was at work, came home, left my msg here and today (Sunday) the app is still running. I do not have it playing anything, it is not looking at my catalog/library or anything else. When I use the task manager app to close it, it pops back up.
On the imeem app there is an option to logout. When you logout it closes the app as well - internally to the app, not Android closing it. So I think this can be written into the Last.FM app as well, yes?
Not a ding against the app, just something to be aware of.

Champions,
Hopefully by now you’ve had the chance to make your myTouch reflect you, inside and out! Today, we’re excited to announce that the new T-Mobile ‘AppPack’ is available for Champions, including the much-anticipated Sherpa application. In addition, ‘Work Email’ Exchange support has been issued broadly. Set up instructions for both are included below.
With only 3 weeks left until the launch of myTouch, we ask that Champions continue to lead by example and learn the phone, explore the marketplace and showcase how you’ve personalized your phone with your teammates. Let’s make this phone the most popular employee phone on your team!
AppPack
The AppPack, a “super app” that houses a number of T-Mobile recommended applications, is now ready for use. You can download it by clicking on this URL from your myTouch device and following the below instructions: http://www.tmoapps.com/Documents/AppPack.apk .
Applications include:
· Sherpa
· World Tour (Previously Le’ Tour Eiffel)
· Visual Voicemail
· myAccount
· Hotspot Locator
· imeem
· Movies by Flixster
· Facebook
· Enhance Phone Book
To ensure the download and installation is successful on your myTouch:
1. Select: Menu >Settings >Applications. Check the box to allow install of non-Marketplace apps (i.e. "Unknown Sources").
2. In ‘browser’ type the URL: http://www.tmoapps.com/Documents/AppPack.apk.
3. Select the AppPack.apk and install.
4. Once downloaded, the AppPack icon will appear in the App Drawer.
5. Select and drag the app to the Home screen.
Please note: You will need to re-download at the time of national launch, August 5. Again, this is a unique customer experience for Retail Champions that gives a “sneak peek” at these applications before launch. At launch, customers will receive an SMS with the link to the AppPack and be able to download all of them directly to their phone from the marketplace.

Well, I work for an exclusive third party retailer, i.e. I sell T-Mobile phones and service, but do not actually work for T-Mobile, and we have "Reps" that are sort of our ambassador to T-Mobile. They give us info on new phones, features, system changes, and what not. Perhaps that's what he is refering to.

This should not be necessary as long as you don't use any files from unknown sources. For example only use the market to install applications, only copy files from your pc to your phone (they will be scanned on your pc), and as usual be careful for attachments in your mailbox. Check where they come from and if you receive "sexy girls.bat" from anyone (even a friend) don't open it...
You can always connect phone in mass storage mode and run kaspersky on the two memory cards .

i use 'MyLookout' its a free app (also a paid version) and everytime something new is put onto the phone, MyLookout will automatically scan it for malware, its a really good app.
also another advantage of this app, is you can do backups to the cloud.
And another thing. If your device was to go missing, you can simply log on to the website MyLookout.com from your PC or another Phone, there you can switch on GPS, track the Phone down, perform a full wipe, lock the device, Sound an alarm on the phone which cannot be turned off.
and the best feature, is you can select an option so the app will not uninstall, so the thief who took your phone, cannot uninstall the app. Meaning you can always keep tracking it down
you can do all this from any PC / Mobile
Dr Web antivirus light is nice too

No just don't install sketchy apps.
Then again I don't use AV on my PC's either...it has proven useless in the past as it doesn't keep up with the attackers quickly enough. These days I go with a 'perimeter defense', keep the hostile code from running on the machine in the first place rather than running every damn thing and counting on some program to be current enough to save me.
Kaspersky Mobile Security is the best
Though i'm not using it right now.
I use lookout and find it excellent, though as others rightly say your phone is not nearly as vulnerable as your pc and by following common sense behaviour you should be totally fine. Give lookout a try as it includes lost phone detection and wiping too.

Why should I care about malware when I flash the phone every two weeks!!
(sometimes less time)
I don't, because I want to maintain maximum performance and battery life. Plus I'm not sure how effective any of the products are.
I must say though, I am a lot more careful about reading permissions and installing untested apps these days, after reading about the droid-dream malware etc.
nipip: lol true, same here
What about NetQin
Galaxy S XWJVB
And where to get kaspersky from? its not in the market
Galaxy S XWJVB
I use Lookout and have been very happy with it. Sure it may be a placebo at this moment. But as smartphones become the net access tool of choice for more people, malware will get worse as time goes by.
Plus I feel those people who say they can avoid trouble on their phones and even PCs by just not downloading "dodgy" code are massively underestimating the asshats out there and the ways that harmful code can be hidden. If you open a PDF or even a website, you ARE vulnerable.

Concerning to performance issue, I do not think it's a good idea to use an antivirus app

Rom Dedicated to Hotspot

Has anyone come across a ROM that's dedicated to HotSpoting?
My thoughts are this:
1) Is there anything for this phone like a SafeStrap where you can change roms just by rebooting?
2) Could a rom be written to disable pretty much everything except hotspot (cannot receive text messages or phone calls, no apks are trying to use the internet in the background, etc...)?
I don't know how to make roms, so I am not going to say it sounds easy, but it does sound much simpler than a lot of the full OS roms I see.
Thanks guys!
I mean, there're 3G router for 30 dollars that can do that, and you want to use a fully featured phone that costs 150 USD$ o more for that?
Mmmmm.....

yeah but there's already ROMs that have the ability to do Wifi hotspot. so why wouldnt you just flash one of those and call it a day.
not like you're really going to see any better battery life by only having it as a hotspot. that **** kills the battery

My phone already does hotspot. I just changed permissions and have been good to go.
I can't get internet out at my house, so I use my phone's hotspot (and an antenna and amplifier I put together) so I can still game. When I get a phone call, or a picture message, it will lag like crazy, or dump my game.
This is why I would like a very simple ROM that would not allow for anything but a hotspot, or even just the ability to turn everything else off. I also noticed that if I can keep my unused RAM above 1gb, it hotspot's better.

I have looked into 3G routers, but then I'd have to pay for another phone line, and I'm not looking to do that. Then there's companies that sell internet service that is unlimited and 3G, but they are about a $500 start up fee, and about $125 a month after that. That is CRAZY!
Unless I've got it wrong, and I can somehow clone my SIM Card for the 3G router? I'm definitely no 3G router expert. Thoughts?
In that case, you can install Android Firewall and block everything except tethering and there's an app for blocking all calls. I think (my opinion) that's easier than a full hotspot rom having to switch back and forth. You can also make an script for enabling both or use tasker.

Yup, that's what I got. Also I got another apk that blocks startup apks (BootManager), and with both of them I got better signal.
Thanks for the help.
I have also noticed that my battery life has increased a lot. I was 40% more efficient since doing this yesterday, and about 40% more efficient this morning too. I'm assuming it's because of the BootManager.
Does anyone know the programs to allow through the firewall in order to get the hotspot to work?
I tried allowing everything (by clicking the check boxes) and that didn't work unless I clicked the box that says 'all apps'. I'm assuming what I need is not populating and so the only was to get it is to click 'all apps' which defeats the purpose. :-/
And does anyone know if the hotspot is a stand alone or if it uses other applications in order to work?
Thanks again!
If you go to settings, there's an option "Tethering support". You have to enable that in order to tether to works.
Just a thing: If you modify your traffic or DNS or whatever with another program (example, AdFree that blocks ads) the adds will be blocked also to anyone that connects to the hotspot.

I didn't find a 'settings' on it or a 'Tethering Support'. I only see when hitting menu: Firewall Disabled/Enabled, Log Disabled/Enabled, Save Rules, Exit, Help, and More.
Then under 'More', I see: Show Log, Show Rules, Clear Log, Set Password, Set Custom Script.
There is also the Mode in the top left that lets me do White/Black list.
I would love to go into 'Tethering Support if you can guide me there!

What is the apk and version number you're running? That link is dead. I downloaded 'droid wall v1.5.7'.

Droidwall hasn't been updated in ages and doesn't have toggles for tethering.
I use AFWall+, which built off the concept of Droidwall. It has an entry you can whitelist for Tether & DNS.

Ahhh. Yeah, this program looks much much better. I'm out for work all week, but when I get back home this weekend, I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the help!
EDIT: I don't have tethering in the options like you, but it's just another application on the list so I checked it. Is there anything else I need to check to make it only hotspot? Like the phone and text one, or the DLNA?

Help with unknown smartphone that showed up on my Google Account devices

Hi guys.
I need some help here... I was having a look at my google account page, at the security part when something very strange showed up...
First let me say that I'm a long time user of 2 factor authentication on google and also on other platforms. No one else have access to my password, and it's a strong one (upper/lower case, numbers, special chars...). No one have access to my smartphone, not even my wife, and it's fingerprint protected.
With all these security measures in place, still today I discovered that unknown smartphone that I never used, I don't even know anyone close to me that have a smartphone of this model (OnePlus 6), it simply appeared as if it has synced (!!!) with my google account at march 28, 3:37am...
When I go to Google's device management, I can remove access from my account to my own smartphone (motorola G7 power), but I simply can't do anything about this strange smartphone... The only thing it shows is the time it synced with my google account and the location (just Brazil, it don't even show the city. I live in Brazil)...
I've posted a question on Google help forum, still I'm asking you guys if any of you have some insight to give me, some help... I'm really concerned about this possible breach.

It's a breach alright.
The attacker might be using your account on the browser on a device.
Or The user string is spoofed to avoid detection .
We don't know how your password was compromised so lets assume that
1)You might have compromised by reusing the password on another site .Some phisher/hacker might have retrieved it from a password dump.
2)Device or browser or keyboard or OS is compromised.
3)Glitch at Google side. The device shown is in error.
Regardless of that , you should change password from a safe environment. Do a password change from a fresh browser instance .
On a side note , you can check if your email-password has been compromised using the site below.(Troy Hunt is a trusted security researcher)

Had changed my password a month ago, just changed again as soon as I saw this on a safe computer.
Edit: the only new app I used close to this incident was Remote Fingerprint Unlock, which was featured on XDA... Still I don't know if anything was compromissed by this app or if it's a glitch on Google side... Going to wait for Google reply.

I doubt Remote Fingerprint Unlock requires Google Credentials directly. If at all , the windows password should be compromised .

Agree with you, I just talked about it because it was the only different factor. I've installed Remote Fingerprint Unlock march 26. Then this incident occurred march 28. Anyway... I need an answer from google...
