Looking for a car charger for the x1. - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I live in the UK and have been to Carphone warehouse, Phones 4 U, The o2 store (where I got the phone from) and they all redirected me to each of the other shops...?!?!?
Now I've read other posts about mixing chargers from different manufacturers, so i'm not too keen on buying a car charger made for a different make and model phone...
So...can anyone point me in the right direction?

just get any car charger with a usb connector.
I use the one that came with my TomTom.

I use the BlackBerry car charger.. it works fine..

My car has a USB socket, just plugged in any normal mini-USB worked too

can someone recommend a car charger and a holder for the x1 ?!

Brodit has actually made a nice custom fit holder for the X1. But I just find it too expensive for a piece of molded plastic at about 40$ for the holder alone. If you factor in the cost for the actual car mounting kit and the charger it ends up costing about 80$ or more.
I went the cheap route and ordered a custom fit cradle through ebay from Hongkong for only 15$ and a generic USB car charger for about 7$ incl. shipping.
If there is any interest, I will report back once I receive the holder.

I've had the Brodit cradle and mount in my car for the last couple of weeks and I'm very happy with it; good solid build quality and easy to fit too.

i second that, got an old balckberry charger and it does the job perfectly.

I use a garmin charger, it sits at a right angle though and the wire comes out the front of the screen kind of

I use a Motorola charger that came with my old V3i, however the screen is always on while charging in the car, just like the Moto

You guys are talking CRADLES, but if it's just a CHARGER you're asking about... this is all you need

$1.02.
Plus a USB cable, you're set. I've got one, works fine. I got extra USB cables and USB wall chargers from these guys too, verrrry cheap.

I have the brodit and it is worth the money, very good quality. I was not happy about paying for the mounting kit either though, especially as i want to swap it between 3 different cars. What I did was attach it to a metal angle bracket I had lying around - That fits between the vent on my old mitsubishi, and in between bits of trim on a bmw - you just have to be a bit inventive. You can get ideas for mounting from brodits web site anyway, most they just look like bent bits of metal anyway

You can use the Motorola V2 Charger

i just bought a USB charger via ebay for the glorious amount of 1€ (+2.80 packaging).
it even charges the Phone when i use it with my Motorcycle
it works ... what else can i say?
so why pay 30 bucks when u can have it so cheap?

HD2 Car holder with audio connection?

I have searched and Googled, but I still haven't found what I'm looking for:
A car holder for HD2 with charger and audio connector.
I used my TD2 this way, connected audio to my car's AUX, and then used the TD2 for both navigation and music.
Today I have a passive holder, but I really don't like the hassle with connecting/disconnecting two cables each time.
Like this Brodit holder, but with a 3,5 mm connector as well:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/popups/gallery.php?product_id=22480
..or like this desktop cradle - but for car use:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/popups/gallery.php?product_id=22701&view_img=3.jpg
You get the point..
Any tips?
I think it is not necessary, because without this fixed connectors you can connect your charger or audio connector directly to your phone.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't understand what you mean.
I want a holder with fixed connectors.
As far as i have seen they are not available on the market.
but i have seen a thread with pictures where a fellow member has glued an audio connector in i think it was the active brodit holder.
read through the treads for car holders.
This is almost exactly what I want. I have an iphone and used the Griffin Autopilot. I connected to the car via 3.5mm (I dont want/need an FM transmitter). It also plugged in to the cigarette lighter and charged it (AND had nice FWD/REWIND/PAUSE/PLAY buttons on top.
Anything out there...?

I have been looking for a while also. I did see someone on XDA mod a Brodit active holder by gluing a 3.5mm jack at the base of the holder. But as the Brodit holder is already a bit pricey I kept looking.
I have found a device that looks like it is sold under three different brand names although they all look to be the same. The one thing I am unsure of is if the 2.5mm jack will output the audio for music, GPS and voice calls or if it is just restricted to phone related audio.
I have ordered the active car kit below and will post back with my findings once it arrives.
http://www.netimes.com/shop/car-mou...tc-hd2-t8585-htc-leo-p-2536.html?cPath=80_731
I ordered the car kit linked below from neTimes:
http://www.netimes.com/shop/car-mou...tc-hd2-t8585-htc-leo-p-2536.html?cPath=80_731
I have not used it extensively but here are my impressions so far:
The device is made from a very 'light' plastic not from metal as I had optimistically hopes for. The build quality is pretty good!
Inserting the phone into the device for the first time was a frightening experience. It is a very snug fit, and I was more than a little concerned about the pressure required to seat the HD2 over the 3.5mm jack and the microUSB, thankfully no damage was made to either jack on the HD2 and the alignment of said ports appears to be very good.
The 2.5mm headset jack that is on the speaker/car charger part does indeed pass the audio (in stereo) to a car head unit. So it will pass all audio when plugged in. Exactly what I wanted.
The pickup answer button on the speaker/car charger worked somewhat intermittently for me. I will have to play around with it a bit more to see that the behavior was not due to operator error as I suspect. But it is not a crucial part as it is easier to reach the HD2 than this tiny button.
The suction mount sticks well to the windscreen, but the actual 'neck' of the mount is very short with minimal adjustment. I am now looking for a way to fix it to a Brodit vent or dash mount for something a bit more robust and unobtrusive. The curly cord is also on the large side and it is captive so can not easily be replaced
The holder does NOT swivel into landscape orientation. If it were connected to a swivel mount the HD2 would most likely fall out as it is high up over the center point of the mount and the is nothing other than the tight fit holding it there. But I have not really investigated this yet. Maybe I will test it out when I get a swivel Brodit mount. eXpansys list it as being compatible with the Herbert Richter Gooseneck Suction Mount so hopefully we have some other mount options.
There appear to be a number of stores selling what appears to be the same device under different branding like Kidigi and eXpansys have versions also. My advice is to buy the cheapest from the store that you trust the most to honor any warranty issues. I have never purchased from newTimes before so apart from the shipping in a good timeframe, I have no grounds to recommend them over other stores that sell this dock, like eXpansys.
All in all it is great value but I still have some concern about the long term affects on the microUSB port. I really do wish that Microsoft had specified a standard dock connector for Windows Phone 7. This is one area Apple has it over Windows Phone.

Looks like the custom ones are starting to appear not a bad Price at £15.99

Hmm, Pre-order and the pictures are faked (charging lead plugging in the left hand side?). Best wait till after their September due date and check again, it looks like it will be a nice solution if it arrives.
I bought a universal car dock from ebay and whilst the phone fits (kind of) the streak is just so damn heavy it shakes about A LOT. It's usable, but very irritating.
Not sure what these 2 will be like though, but watch out for shaking
saving seller for future use.

Sure... aside from the over-inflated price. I bought mine from a local Wireless Wave here in Toronto and it works just as well for $20 taxes in.
Dell car kit far from perfect
I bought the car kit from Dell, and no matter whether the device is hanging from the windshield or off the dash, the Streak bounces around like mad when I am driving. My car is nowhere NEAR that bad - it is a heavy device and an awkward mount.
I just ordered a GPS t-mount from ProClip that might work well. I will take the sleeve the Streak sits in on the gooseneck and mount that on the ProClip mount, then attach that to the vehicle mount made for my car. That should lock the device down.
It's an expensive solution, but I spend about an hour each way commuting daily, so it is really a necessity for me. My mount should be here on Wednesday, and if anyone is interested I will write it up and post a picture or two if it works.
pictures would be awesome.
Do you see anyway to have the adapter attached (jerry-rigged) to the mount so that it plugs in when you insert the Streak?
I am looking for a way, as plugging the cable in is extremely tempermental, and a pain, to be honest!!
I suppose you could do something on the bottom of the Dell sleeve to hold the cable. I will have my cable secured on the console and the mount, so it is no problem for me to plug it in the bottom of the phone when I put it in the stand.
The mount comes in tomorrow. Can't wait. Had to slam on the brakes on the way home today and it looked like my phone was on the business end of a trebuchet...

In the US it is only 39.99.... not too expensive if you ask me. Plus this car docking kit really is perfect for the Streak. The sides are flexible rubber that hold the Streak and on the back there are rubber pads so absolutely no plastic is touching the Streak resulting in no scratches. Plus you get a a cable with it.
Perfection is worth the 40 bucks. Although I would love to see images of the one you purchased and seem pleased with.
I have the Dell car kit and I like it. It seems reasonably priced at $40 since it comes with a cigar lighter-USB adapter and USB cable as separate items. One can never have too many charging cables or options. The mount does jiggle a bit however this can be cured by positioning the mount so the cradle rests on top of the dash rather than suspended in mid-air.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I'm looking to use the dell case inners for a car holder. I have some garmin mounts that will allow me to fix to the dash.
The issue with the ones from ebay (original post) the holding part is covering the power pdmi connector.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Anyone thinking of making their own car mount should make clearance for the camera lens so it can be used as a dash-cam. Dell did not do this and it would require some cutting on their kit.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I acutally brought one of these:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/clingo-universal-in-car-holder-p25398.htm
The arm is solid but since it still sticks out a fair bit and the phone is kinda heavy, it does bounce a little (nothing compared to the flexi arms you find on most other phone holders). And since the Dell has a flat back, it sticks pretty well too (though I have had it drop once but I think that was cos my brother didn't put it on properly and due to the weight, it slowly peeled itself off). The pad only covers a small area of the back of the phone so you can use the camera, and there's also no clamps that would obscure the charging port or the buttons on top.
If the docking station was cheaper, I'd seriously consider getting another one for the car, that way I can easily put it on and take it off with super easy and I can leave the cable plugged in and just tuck it away (saves so much time when I do multiple deliveries and stuff).

I've seen the Dell car mount kit, and it seems to have a snugg fit to the dell.

Thanks dude. Ive ordered it. Real cheap price. Hope it dont fall to bits.
Thanks for the heads up! I had one from Tesco for £3.98 but it was waaaaaaay too long, this seems like the perfect size
Ok I just got the car holder today, it looks good, it is made of hard plastic and it's fixed size so it will fit only the HD2 not any other phones; the grip on the phone is very good so no risk of having the phone falling down while driving as it happened with my previous holder.
As it rotates 360 degrees the holder can be used also ona flat surface such as a desk to watch video handsfree ;-)
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Car Charger mA?
Got both car holder and car charger. They came yesterday but I wasn't in.
Am V happy with the holder, its a bit chunky looking but it works. And you can unclip it from the windscreen, ie its not glued but suction cup.
The car charger(http://www.prepaymania.co.uk/mobilephone/htc-hd2-micro-usb-in-car-charger.html), doesn't seem to charge the battery. The charging light comes on in Android but the battery icon doesn't change. The same in WP7 except the charging light alternates red/green. Same for android using extended battery.
I have read elsewhere on xda that the charger may not be passing enough mA for the HD2 but there is no data plate and not enough info on the website to tell me what current is passed. It does say it is made for HTC devices though.
Oh well!
If it works why not, it is a fair price

Xperia Z1 Car Dock?

Anyone heard anything about an official car dock?
First Sony phone for ages and I'm not sure if Sony tend to sell phone car docks. Suspect the magnetic charging pins are for power only - my old Galaxy Nexus had 3 pins, one of which is for data.
Sony has actually produced a fair few accessories this time around (some being universal, which is also a good thing).
However the car holder is just that - a holder. To me that seems rather stupid, as if you were going to use it as a SatNav (with the screen on) then you're going to either kill the battery while driving, or soon after.
Why couldn't Sony produce a holder that could charge via the pogo pins? Imagine how good that would be! Then include a smart tag (NFC) so that once you put the phone in the dock, it would connect to your car radio via Bluetooth and/or load up your SatNav software/Spotify or whatever.
And charging £40 is also a bit of a liberty if you ask me!
I hope we get a third party holder that does the above, and costs a bit less too.

There is the official one...but it just holds it. I really want one that has a charge attached, I can deal with a cable down for the headphone jack, but I can't live without power. Sony really missed a trick on that one.
Especially with the magnetic charger port, and the fact they're even selling the cable separate to the dock in some regions. How hard to rig up this very lead to a car holder?
well I did not find any sony manufactured genuine car dock for Z1 at Amazon..there are some on ebay but not find one for Z1 and they are bit expensive too....and also found some from other vendors at Fommy...they have variety of docks with reasonable prices...

That's the one I was talking about earlier. It doesn't charge, which seems rather silly as I've regularly driven for 6-7 hours in a day (albeit with breaks) using satellite navigation, and there's no way the Z1 would cope with that and not die part way through.
I really did expect it would have been a dock with an integral magentic charger. Of course, you can presumably rig up a separate cable of your own - but you'd expect to buy something that looks sleek and designed for the phone.
Of all the Sony accessories, this has to be the worst.
Just ordered on if these: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/ultra-desktop-dock-for-sony-xperia-z1-p41456.htm
Will use some sticky tape and stick it on my dash. Been using a Galaxy Nexus the same way with the desktop dock, works great, just drop the phone in the dock when you get in the car.
Any hard breaking and your phone will fall out of the dock and either smash into your windshield or in your face. I'd not use those dock type of holders.
It's not perfect, but I plan on using my iBolt I have had for several phones now, and just ordered a couple magnetic usb cables from EBay. I'll just attach it to the back and leave it dangling. Then I can simply flick it in place when required. Should work! I just wish the Z1 had the analogue USB audio with charging the S4 has......only thing I miss so far!
How many phones do carry audio via USB? The Motorola Atrix did (very nice car kit) but I've not found a phone since.
I like the dock but price is a bit steep. The only problem I have with my universal dock is that since all buttons are locked on one side its very hard to place without hitting the volume of camera button. I'm sure soon we will see some aftermarket copy cats that sell it a at a reasonable cost .

Brodit always look so tacky though.
Considering there is a charge point on the bottom someone could design a nice looking dock.
The deskdock would work if it had a slightly higher back and then a clip that could fold up and hold onto the top of the phone.
It needs to be a design that doesn't look like it has been made in metal shop by a 7 year old when the phone is not in there.
Yeah I believe this is definitely something Sony need to wake up about, because these sort of things will hold them back. Sony need to ask themselves a question what is going to be the thing that is going to piss people off the most. Obviously opening and closing flaps every day. Love the headphones jack with no opening and closing flaps .
For a flagship phone people expect lots of accessories for the phone, extra battery life, protective cases, docks, car kits... I purchased the Xperia Z outright, and then expecting some accessories for the phone to be released after, and finally pretty much nothing, what seriously hoping for a car kit to utilise the charge pins. As a consumer I feel abandoned by Sony .
They have made come some way with the Xperia Z1 offering quite a few accessories at launch date, but note most if not almost all of them are generic. It shouldn't be 100% other companies responsibility to provide accessories for a flagship phone, it is Sony's and who cares if other Companies may manufacturer accessories.
I now have the Xperia Z1 and happy with the phone, and now in the same situation as everyone in thread looking for a car kit again, a little bit better this time because there is a possibility that I don't have to keep on opening a flaps any more.
Due to this I am sure a lot of people are not buying Sony phones regardless of how good they are. Come on Sony I really think you will find that a huge percentage of people require car kits, as they use phones for an in car gps, in addition most countries will fine you if you are not using your phone hands free.

I'm using the passive holder from Brodit/ProClip. It makes sense for me since I already had the car mount from a previous phone. It works quite well but it is overpriced for a simple piece of plastic. I don't like their powered options so am just using a magnetic charging cable with it.

What I like in it is when I want to use my Z1 as sat nav the phone is still safe in its case with access to any buttons and no need to shift between case and car holder. Also you can use magnet charging cable as it easy access to magnet socket.

USB Type-C Magnetic Adapter Charging Cable

First of all, I’d like to put out there that this is a review for the item I purchased and might not be the same brand as the one you might end up with. I’m aware that there are several different brands, but I just got this one as it seemed like a good price, but more on that later.
What exactly is it?
It’s a charge/data cable with a female USB at one end and at the other a magnetic Type-C at the other (other adapters are available).
Who is it for?
Anyone but more importantly it’s for someone that charges their phone quite often. All you do is offer the cable end to the adapter and it magnetically clicks into place.
Why did I buy this?
I was, first of all, looking for more Type-C USB charging cables to put around the house so I can just stick my phone on charge as and when needed. I thought about buying a pack of standard USB cables however I remembered that a while ago I purchased something similar for another Mini-USB device I had and looked about for one that would work with my Note 8. I found one and ordered it off eBay.
Advantages
Wear and tear on the charger port. This is the bit of the phone that is more likely to fail (unless you count the screen being smashed) as you’re constantly plugging and unplugging the charger. If you charge your phone twice a day that’s 730 times a year you're pushing and pulling that plug into the port. With this adapter, you put that little bit in the charger port once and that’s it. Just offer up the cable and it magnetically clicks onto the adapter. Also if you were to accidentally catch the cable and wrench it then the cable will come away from the adapter and your expensive phone won’t get dragged onto the floor. Furthermore, the charging port will not get damaged, because if it does, it’s not just a matter of unscrewing a few screws and replacing the charging module.
Disadvantages
First main one is that you either need to carry the adapter cable around with you or you will need to purchase extras. This was my issue. I need one cable at home, one in my car and one in my truck. Plus another one to keep on you should you visit a friends house. The cables aren’t cheap either if you wanted to buy them separately. And there lies another issue. A lot of sellers have run out of stock of cables on their own, so you need to buy the whole thing, and at about £5 or so a pop for a cheap-ish one, then you’re looking at about £20 for a set. I’d suggest you purchase all the cables with a variety of adapters from the same seller that way you know they’re all going to fit.
Speaking of the tiny little adapters, they are really small, and if you drop one you’ll have a hard time finding it, and like the cables, they're sold separately but are sometimes out of stock. I dropped one in the kitchen and found it stuck to the bottom of the washing machine due to the magnet attracted to the metal.
Should I buy one?
Yes, in fact, I think you should just go and buy a few. Reason being, a set of these will be cheaper to buy than replacing the charging module on the Note 8, especially since you need to separate the screen from the body.
Any brands you’d recommend?
There’s a brand called Wsken that makes a variety of the cable and has been reviewed by a chap on YouTube called Techmoan. However several sellers sell their own variety at a lesser price, so it’s up to you.
Link to UK eBay listing I used: http://r.ebay.com/LJ6uBF
Do you have a picture of it installed in the phone?
Also does it still "fast charge"? What is the data transfer rate.?
Also why not just use the wireless charging that is built into the device.
I just put 3 wireless fast chargers around the house

Do you have a picture of it installed in the phone?
Also does it still "fast charge"? What is the data transfer rate.?

curious also if these will fast charge.
Yes they fats charge. I don't have one in my note 8 as I use a wireless pad but I have them on my ipad and s2 tablet. They are fantastic, my wife has one I her galaxy S7 and her ipad. The S7 fast chargers via the cable.
We have one cable each and just flick between devices as we use them.
I've just bought another 3, 1 for the car and 1 each for the kids.
Wsken brand are the ones I use. At $18AUD each they are a bargain. No more torn cables, or dodgy ports on my devices.
No I don't work for Wsken, I tried a few other cheap ebay ones and they were rubbish

What USB spec?
Are they 3.1 (USB-PD) gen 2 superspeed capability?
I had a few of those on my Note 5 and end up with a burned Fast Charging adapter, and a defective micro USB port on my phone.
It charges extremely slowly and can't work for data transfer.
If you are not careful when plugin them, the pins make contact on the wrong place generating like a short.
PS. The cable is all white, but I end up wrapping the tip with electrical tape, because it has a green led similar to the MacBook Pro chargers, and I hate lights at night
This is one I have

It's non reversible so only goes on one way. There is a north, south magnet configuration in the head and cable so if you try to put it on the wrong way they push away from each other. Just like two north pole magnets.
This is the micro usb version and it offers data transfer.
The usb c version is a different design and is actually circular.

I'm using asap's X-Connect setup. Here's their website link.
I originally got these as part of an IndieGoGo Campaign.
I use these quick connects with my Mophie Charge Force Desk Mount Stand and a Vent Mount since Mophie doesn't have a case yet for the Note 8. I'm using a regular case and stuck a Spigen Metal Plate to the back of the case. The phone/case now attach to the Mophie Charge Force Mounts and I can easily use the quick connect cables. This is especially convenient in the car!
Update: I do not recommend these magnetic quick connects IF you are working in an automotive shop or a machine shop or anywhere that you might come in contact with tiny metal particles. I had one of these on my husband's phone which he usually keeps in his pocket. He also puts lots of "other" things in his pockets like screws, washers, bolts, metal pieces, etc. Well, his magnetic end in the phone attracted all sorts of metal debris! Couldn't even magnetically attach the cable to it. I finally had to have him stop using this type of setup.
Sorry for the delayed replies. I've been away from all things electronic for a few days. I'll post some photos up of my setup when I get sorted again
Would be Great if it came in 3ft & 2ft length also
