have any one experienced this ! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

you know the only us port in the kaiser where you charge and where you connect it to the pc. when you first buy the kaiser it would be wonderful then couple months later ..it becomeshappy and doesn't work as good. it starts either rocking or the "teeth" inside start to move that will cause problems with connections and charging.
same thing happened to me with my universal so I threw it away ..but I love this kaiser I have what would be another alternate solution ? please I would appreciate your help.

Yes this is fairly common with this phone. Normally service is suggested.
Warranty FTW!

Just be careful when your plugging and unplugging the device. i.e. take it out and put it in straight, not at any angles.
If you search broken miniusb you'll find several threads. One is of mine when it broke. It was charging in the car and dropped and the "male" part of the extusb on the phone cracked.
I went to an At&t service center, the guy looked at it, told me its frequent and handed me a new device.

that's the problem ...I bought it over ebay

Here ya go...

oh wow..thanks man!
I was looking all over the place and not near me..
I never thought that at&t might have a technical support department..
but that's wonderful.
I know it's a little expensive but i't worth it when you can't live without your ppc.

PPC-Techs is not AT&T technical support, but I highly recommend them. I have used their screen protectors on my devices since my Ipaq 1900. Their customer serices is excellent.

I just had the mini usb replaced on my Tilt by PPCTechs. HTC wanted over $350 to repair. PPCTech was about $75. Excellent service and high speed.

thank you sooo much guys ...I'm probably going to look for the HTC Universal and send it to those guys too!

Broke Tilt in half

So one of my friends at work had an att tilt. However his son dropped it out of his pants pocket and the screen popped off. Screen is still in one piece however completly seperated from the tilt mechanism and the ribbon cable is missing. So I told him instead of throwing it away (cause att does not offer insurance) to give it to me and I'd see what I can do (Gonna unlock it and use it as an upgrade for my wing ).
I've read some of the hardware manuals and can already see I'll need parts to fix it. But I have no ideas what ones. Or if it's even worth it to fix. I mean its basically a free tilt minus any repair costs. Any help?

Check thi site, there is a manual how to dismantle kaiser. Could be helpful:

Thank you, however thats actually the repair manual I looked at. However while looking for parts I have yet to find the ribbon cable that connects to the display.
This is basically what I have except the ribbon cable is missing. And alot of steps missing to get it this way.

OMG, that had to hurt.
Yeah, kid was playing basketball and fell out of his pocket. I guess the kid has broke 4 phones this month... curve, tilt, 2 pantec duos. Told my friend to get him a $20 go-phone now lol. And use the savings to get me a tilt
I dont know what kind of damage besides the physical the drop may have caused. Phone was not on at the time so that may have helped it (I hope)

Without actually looking at it, its hard to say what exactly you need. But you for sure need a new flex cable. Unfortunately that is the hardest part to find. At least here in the US. I usually buy broken phones from people who don't want to pay for a repair. Then I use the parts from them. You can get a new housing easily enough if you need it but the flex cable will be your biggest hurdle.
I suggest trying to find one broken on ebay and using the 2 you have to make one working phone. Even a broken Tilt can run for $200 on ebay though.
Anyone notice that case has already been replaced at some stage as it has a camera hole (not standard for Tilts) a keyboard without the white part and no logo. Perhaps the replacement was weaker than the original one. If the O/P searches the forum here for LCD Screen replacements there's loads of links to different companies supplying parts for Kaiser variants. I have no experience using any of them though so cant suggest which ones are best.
@Planet Neo
Yeah I was thinking that but was hoping it wouldn't come to that. Would suck to spend $200 for parts just to find the motherboard is broke or something to that effect. Was hoping someone knew of a place to buy a new cable or had one to sell. Also was hoping someone with some experience could let me know if they think I'd need a new tilt assembly.
@Flying Kiwi
Lol, I used a picture from kaiser disassembly guide to show what i was referring to. It has the standard tilt case. I'll be taking pictures of what I have as soon as I have the phone in my possession.
Okay I assume that its going to be very hard to get the ribbon and you're going to need housing. I believe that it will be the same as making a new tilt, because the screen is as good as dead without the ribbon so all you could do is get new housing and a new screen and it should rack up about $150-200. Which in my opinion is much easier and faster and better than frustrating on getting a ribbon.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm sure you'll think I'm busting your balls / stalking you but hard to find? Hell no! Expensive, maybe ( $100) but hard to find? I think not. Good job you're not charging people for you expert advice else they'd be wanting refunds....how long did you say you'd been doing this for?

You need a TYTN II flex. There are many other suppliers and if you go direct they may be a bit cheaper. google is your friend....
To check the board - connect to a windoze computer with a mini USB cable and power up or press the soft reset button to boot it - it should ident and install then try to sync. It should boot fine even with no LCD if it's OK assuming the battery still holds some charge.
A full housing will run you about $60. Some sellers have just front panels for about $40 though I'm unsure if these have the pivot.

Man, MS you really need to get off my nuts. It's getting creepy. I said in my post hard to find at least in the US. And the link you gave was for a seller in China. One more word of advice for the OP, Make sure this part actually works for the AT&T Tilt variant. I had a customer buy a Flex cable for the HTC Herald thinking it would work for the T-Mobile Wing but due to the modified button layout of the Wing it did not fit correctly. Much like this person HERE experienced.

Stop talking &*%(* and I'll stop correcting your posts Instead of saying something is a fact say it's your opinion. It's not a 'rare' part - and they ship WORLDWIDE. It's not as if he'll get one from a local mom and pop store - it's gonna be mail order wherever you get it from and looking at the seller's feedback is a good judge - all my parts come from China - so why pay a middleman such as yourself extra $ just so it has a US stamp on the package?

What the **** just happened to my phone ???? NEED HELP !!!

I just bought an 8925 a couple of weeks ago (about a year used) and it was working fine...Best phone I've had so far...Yesterday I'm sitting in my car, I start the TT software and drive off. As I'm driving off I plug the phone into the car charger and pouf! Phone just blacks out. No lights no nothing. I tried to plug the phone into a wall charger, data cable, car charger, nothing. No light, no sign of life at all...
I also had just purchased a new battery for it, tried it and still the same, nothing at all....Suggestions ???????? PLEASE !!!!!!
What kind of car charger do you have? There are reports that if you use a cheap, generic charger it may fry your phone.

THIS ONE. If it is fried, what can I do ? I mean, I'm sure I can't do much about the phone itself but can I maybe go after CellularAccessory.com ???
Good luck...
It's indeed highly recommended to only use HTC car chargers, there have been many reports of similar cases.
I dont think you are gona have much luck trying to go after the place you bought the charger from they usually have disclaimers about damage caused by anything they sell. If the phone truely is dead and going on your description you have probably fried components on the board, is to try claming on your household contents insurance just say it went pop when you plugged it in at home using your htc charger. Failing that if your phone is still under waranty then try the place you bought it from. DONT say you used a non branded charger though or you are screwed lol. Good Luck.
Charger
Damn, paid $3.95 for a multipurpose car charger and it fried your Tilt. I can't imagine that. I'd be p*ssed.
take it to att and see if its still in warranty and get a new one..if its out of waranty then call htc in usa and it should still be covered (manufactures warranty is 15 months). Htc devices are the most knoqwn swapped out phones with warranty exchanges..its very simple..ive exchanged my tilt 4 times now. I dont even break a sweat if something even SEEMS wrong..i used to freak out and try to fix things myself but i eneded up doing more damage than needed and luckily att is so nice and understanding..i just emediately take it in and get a new one now..even if something doesnt feel right..if need be i throw it in boot loader mode and say it wont boot.
It probably should be noted that nobody is suggesting you defraud HTC or AT&T on an open forum, especially senior members. Since your device is regulated by the FCC and it would probably make it a Federal offense, I think I would stick to the basics in any discussions with everyone. If they don't ask, fine, If they do ask then use your own judgment.

I will definately try that, but my only concern is that it's an unlocked att phone that I'm using in Montreal, Canada...Should I go to HTC Canada or USA???
Just tried calling HTC North America (the # that's on their website (425) 679-5318) and it just answers but with no sound at all..It's like if someone picks up the phone but it's just muted....I waited around 3 minutes thinking someone would probably end up answering, but no...
just take it into an att device support center (look on there site or call them) and just tell them it wont turn on..its not defrauding them its honest..as ling as its not PHYSICALLY DAMAGED (as in mving parts were damaged by dropping or mishandling) or WATER DAMAGED (as in the white square on the back is pink) then your good..This happened to me the frst time..i left it on a charge all night and next morning it wouldnt charge nor turn on and att took it with ease.
Wow, a three dollar car charger that is multipurpose for a several hundred dollar device.....the real question is...why? Before you ever plug anything into an electronic device please, please check the output voltage and amperage, a lesson to all.
Ok I was finally able to reach the repair dept. at HTC. They told me the phone is still under warranty so I sent it to their repair center in Indianapolis in the hopes they will be able to exchange it...
I do believe the phone is completely fried, but is there a way for them to still detect what caused it to fry ? Also, they told me that any third-party application they find on the phone voids the warranty, will they be able to see what was installed on the phone ??

If the phone is fryed I doubt they will be able to get it working thus they wont be able to see whats been installed on it and anything could have fryed it such as a power surge while it was plugged in at home. Just wait and see i guess.
once they take it apart they will be able to figure out the problem. sometimes not easy .

Adelaide, Australia - HTC User Needs Urgent Assistance

Hi guys. I've been a member of this forum for a fair while now and you guys are the most helpful, wonderful and pleasant people to ask appropriate questions to, so I pray that a fellow statesman can help me with this problem.
I hooked up my TyTn II to my PC yesterday and noticed it wasn't working, trying everything software didn't help. I pulled the USB cord out and to my surprise, the furthest right pin was pointing a little bit wrong. So, I spent an hour carefully moving it back in place, connected it up, worked.
I have two methods of hooking up, one to my PC and another to a wall charger that came with my BluANT Bluetooth Car Kit. After reading that non-standard ports on anything other than an official HTC product can bend and damage pins because of the way they are designed or somesuch, I became a little paranoid.
But, everything was working fine.
Until this morning.
The furthest right pin was ON TOP of the pin to the left of it. I spent another hour moving it back in place, tried to plug it in to the computer, didn't want to go all the way in. I did not jam it. I did not push it. Looking at the pins I saw that the furthest right has completely ****ed itself. I can't see exactly if it's snapped or just bent right around, but it won't sync and it won't charge.
Fonebiz are apparently the HTC repair people in Australia, is it possible that the whole chargeport can just be replaced and I can have my phone back relatively soon?
Answers as soon as you can guys, I really can't go without a phone for long.
P.S. It's Friday and I'm getting an engaged signal everytime I call their Adelaide office.
Please help me.
EDIT: I am using a cooked ROM, running Touch Commander so it all looks legit on the surface, apart from the boot screen. I am hoping that this doesn't get the phone sent straight back to me, because it's a hardware issue. Am I correct?

I'm not familiar with what repairs that company undertakes and how quickly but certainly if you've been reviewing these forums for a while you'll know there are plenty of companies elsewhere that offer a broken USB port repair service. There really is something wrong with whatever you're plugging in to your TyTN II or how you're doing it. I've had mine since they first came out (bought it here in the UK at the end of September 07) and haven't had a single problem with the port despite regular usage of my charging cradle, non HTC official AC Adapter (the original HTC one blew up after a couple of weeks and 4 recharges), 3-in-1 USB adapter and 3 HTC Headsets. All pins are still straight as a die and connections rock solid. I'm careful not to get any dirt in it and always gently plug in the device straight on.

If you're wanting it repaired under warranty there are instructions in the wiki about restoring your device to it's 'as from the factory' state and you could use the micrSD method to restore all except your spl - that final step needs a working USB port (one of the risks in running a non-official setup while under warranty). I don't know what your chances are but I suspect a little better if only the spl is non-official than the whole lot (irrespective of what it looks like on the surface). Even if you have to pay for the port to be replaced though, as long as it's just a case of soldering in the new connector, that service doesn't cost the earth (at least from the American website I saw offering the service).
In all honesty Kiwi, I think the guy I bought the phone from didn't take care of it in the short time he had it.
But I got a TyTn II for $250 AUD. I'm happy to spend $80 odd to get it repaired in a neighbouring state.
Thank you for your words of wisdom, I am having it repaired as we speak.

Kaiser can't find sim card

Hello guys, I've got quite weird problem. Today morning, I tried to run android on my Tilt, but when I've done flashing, my phone couldn't find sim card (which was in it). I thought it was maybe ROM problem, so I've changed it to another and it was the same. Phone couldn't find sim card which was in it. Okey, I tried to change sim to one from another operator and was still the same... At last, I reflashed my kaiser to Win Mobile 6.5 (shifu 4.3 ROM, best for me) and it's all the same! It didn't crash or something like it, so I think it must be software problem.
What do you think guys, why it can't find sim?
Actually, I've got shifu 4.3 ROM, Radio 1.70.19.09 and HardSPL 3.29.
What shall I do to get it back to work?
Waiting for your advice.
//Edit: found a solution to this, searching the forum. I´ll try it and then say if it works.
ive got the same issue, let me now what u did to fix if u get it working
I tried to put a tape on my sim card to get it better connecting to the port, but it isn't still working... I read all topics about not working sim, but I haven't found real working answer. Can someone say what exactly should I do to make it working (without getting it to service)?
why without getting it to service?
some things are just hardware failures and no software can fix them. i have personally had this problem. read the FIRST page of the kaiser general forum and you will see at least 2-3 such threads. this is a common issue because of the moving parts in the kaiser. if the do-it-yourself tricks aren't working, then it is very very likely a fault in the main flex cable as detailed in the threads i am mentioning.
Yeah, I've seen that and it's really getting me down...
Why not? Just because I had a issue with not contacting usb port, I got my kaiser to service (not original, just something like "buy-sell phones service) and it costed me about 120zł (it's 30 euro, on that current). It wasn't done good. If I had a required stuff to solder it, I'd done that by myself. Next, my kaiser falled off my knee, when I was playing my guitar and writing an sms (I mean, I had guitar on my chest and I was writing sms in the same time) and slider works only in one place (not two - right and left, just only right). I tried to repair it, but it's just torned plastic and I can't do anything with it.
Now, sim card reader has f*cked up... I don't 've got enought money to pay for all things to do with my Tilt, so I think I'd lie down in my drawer...
Goodbye kaiser, hlip... ;(
Maybe, later, I'd buy G1 .
sorry to hear about the entire story. i used my tytn2 for a full 2 years. i had the main flex cable repaired last month and my repair guy also did a poor job. he put in a tilt's main flex cable, so my sim started working again. BUT! he didn't notice that the tilt does not have a front cam. so now my tytn2's front cam does not work.
i used the repaired tytn2 just fine for the past month. i just got an hd2 yesterday because i couldn't resist!
but it was worth having my kaiser repaired because now i can sell it. if i did not have it repaired, no one would want to buy a phone whose sim card doesn't work!
Yeah, I used my for about 1,5 year, but it's second hand phone - it was used by my friend for about year. How much did you pay for that repair? Just wanna know what prices are for that .
HD2... Man, you've got world's controlling center in your hands!
Congratulations .
I'm thinking of selling my kaiser like "sim not working, just for parts or to repair!", but I'll wait for the price in service.
i'm in a country where i can't use ebay/paypal, otherwise i would have ordered a brand new part for the kaiser. these parts are available as "do-it-yourself" kits for about $35.
where i am, i had to have it replaced by a local service shop. these shops rarely have replacement parts for "exotic" phones like the kaiser. so i had to settle for a cannibalized part from a used tilt for about $45 i still think it was worth it because without repairing it, i could probably sell it for about $50. after repairing it, i can probably sell it for about $150+ in the market here. so i will still make a profit of 150-45=$100+ compared to a profit of $50 without having it repaired.

R.I.P My TyTN

Its served me well for the past year but now i fear it has gone kaput..
2 days ago i noticed my homescreen had "no service" listed.
strange as i normally receive a 3g signal fine in my area with no loss..
So i figured take the sim out,
give it a clean and pop it back in
That came the same thing,
"no service"
So i took that sim out and tried my others [o2/tmobile and lebara]
Same thing, wouldn't get a signal..
==
So afraid to say this thing may end up on ebay or in the free ads as a faulty/repair handset as im lost with what to do.. >__<
Any advice guys?
[EDIT]
Yes the phone was unlocked,
must've been through atleast 14 different roms over time but that shouldnt effect this surely.. o__O
Have you tried a hard reset or reflash?
If your phone still dead..when there's a dead body...commonly there's always an autopsy . It can be hardware (antena), maybe something is loose in there.
Try hard-reset if not working flash stock and see if disabling 3G helps... Check no problems carrier side.
As Mr Clown said genrally a way to fix you just have to try every scenario and if not then might be hardware @ which point you can decide if worth the time/outlay?
Thanks guys for the info,
@MrClown I have tried a had reset to only end up in the same situation,
I will attempt a stock rom flash tonight to see if that helps
@Stylez Again i will try a stock flash and see if it helps,
Found a good one on the wiki so that should help
My guess is hardware related as the phone had been dropped a few times in the house albeit over many months not repeatedly,
I'll report back later guys
so thanks for the advice
hey dude! all is not lost! this is a common problem with the kaiser due to the sliding mechanism, i.e. "moving parts". over time, the wear and tear often causes the "main flex cable" to become loose/faulty. i had the same problem at the beginning of may 2010...had it fixed in 1 week and it worked fine. then i got an HD2 in june 2010 but the kaiser still works just fine!
i had made up my mind that the kaiser needed to be replaced the day it went bad. BUT i did not give up hope on it and decided to have it repaired because it is worth more in the second hand market with working phone functionality. did a simple cost-benefit analysis and figured i'd have it repaired AND get an HD2.
wouldn't you know it, i ended up GIVING the kaiser to my brother...had i sold it to a potential buyer, i'm certain it would be worth more if the phone parts work.
...and just to summarize! HD2 is GREAT! but i really miss the hardware keyboard of the kaiser and the super duper redundancy the kaiser had in terms of buttons...D-PAD+jog wheel+arrow keys on hardware keyboard, THREE OK buttons...count them! TWO start menu buttons. oh and the HD2 has a soft reset button in a REEAAAAAALLLLLLYYYYY difficult to access area behind the battery cover, unlike the kaiser's super friendly poke-the-stylus-in-the-hole approach. BUT i highly recommend the HD2 if you still fancy windows mobile...fast, HHUUUUUUGGGEEEE screen, and it seems android just might happen soon on the HD2.

hey dude! all is not lost! this is a common problem with the kaiser due to the sliding mechanism, i.e.

Well if you'll care to enlighten me on where i could get this repair done id be most glad,
Wont be handing it to the people in my local market to fiddle with as i dont trust them at all
As in regards to the previous two guys a stock rom didnt help at all it still refuses to get a signal,
so its definatly something to do with this "flex cable"
But in regards to the HD i wont be getting one,
Most likely i'll be getting another xda exec [htc universal] for my social needs,
I have a tendancy of using dated hardware and pushing their limits
sure dude! i'm just going to post links here of THREE other threads about this issue (so you can verify with some more testing if the flex cable is really the actual issue), in which i have contributed my experience. you can read my posts there as well as all the other very helpful posts of other members.

summary: first try some of the debugging techniques mentioned in the above threads and look for signs that the flex cable is indeed faulty. if so, you have 2 options:
1. get a do-it-yourself kit (available on many websites and also on ebay) and errrr do it yourself!
2. have someone reliable and experienced with such repairs carry out the repair.
i had to go for option 2. and i had to rely on the parts that the service repair guy had to offer (he cannibalized the flex cable from a tilt so the front camera of my tytn2 is no longer detected!).
i totally understand the need to milk out every last drop from these expensive devices. i truly respect the tytn2 even though it is an old device. that little bugger still has so much potential. hope this helps!
Ahhh much thanks for the information man,
You have no idea how appreciative i am
Its definatly a hardware issue so its gonna have to be a replacement fixup for myself,
Looking into this listing on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-TyTN-II-P4550-Kaiser-Flex-Sim-Card-Slot-Repair-Part-/290442707411?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item439fbc01d3
Essentially from hong kong as usual but that looks like it would do the job,
The only problem now is that i have ZERO experience with mobile based mainboards and hardware changing,
Give me a pc or mac anyday and ill be done in seconds but im afraid im blank for mobile operations,
Would any UK members be able to give advice as to somewhere i could get this fitted?
Only option i can think of is at the carphone warehouse..
as in my first post i dont really wish to give this to the market people for a botched job
And much thanks to ASCIIker for all the helpful information,
cos id really dread getting rid of my TyTN II >_<
