I Donated? - G1 Apps and Games

It's the latest paid app for $.99.
Anybody know where this app is donating to? Is it a fake charity?
Looked like some suckers actually fell for it.

I'm assuming that it's just some random guy who's in college who needs money and is saying that it's donating to help children in college (in other words, himself).
Also, just because there are comments doesn't mean that people bought it. You're forgetting that Google allows users to refund their apps within 24 hours. This is especially handy when you want to try out an expensive app.

He/She states in the app description that you are donating to android developers (i.e. him/her)

Haykuro Donation App - Your oppinions needed.

NOTE TO MODS: I know you may consider this thread missplaced, It was posted here for greater exposure. If you feel it should be moved them I am sorry for taking up your time.
A while back someone suggested a Haykuro Donation App for the market and as I have finally got my dev setup up and running under Windows 7 and I have the nessicary dev account with Google I bashed out a quick App and have the aproval of the man himself to put it up.
The app itself is a simple thing, just a thank you message with a link to Hykuro's paypal account. My problem is with pricing, I know that many here are young, not working or otherwise short of cash so did not want to make it too expensive. On the other hand, I want this to raise as much money as possible for Haykuro.
My idea was a Gold,Silver and Bronze version priced at $10,$5 and $2 respectively, that way people could pay what they can afford up front and everyone would still be able to donate via the paypal link.
So, what do you think? I probably won't have time to put this on the market till the weekend so will follow the voting till then

Guys, I would appreciate if you posted something when you voted, just to keep this thread bumped.
I think haykuro will not do that . Donate application is really suck. If I want to donate him, just send $100 to his paypal.

If I may quote from his last PM to me
"that all sounds great, but i don't have a google account to publish to market
besides that, the way you wish to roll out is up to you. by the fans, for the fans. i do this for the community, as well as myself, so the money is just a bonus"
Haykuro himself is not bothered about the money, but I want to offer another avenue for people to donate to him.
Can people who are selecting Other please put their suggestion/reason in a post or I will have no idea what you want.
The 2, 5, and 10 sounds pretty fair to me, if there's some of you who wish to contribute more then just hit his donate link. Otherwise this would be awsome, I to have been waiting for an app of this sort to show my gratitude to the big guy..."Haykuro" ......Thanks Baldyman.

And thank you, seems like you have really understood what I am trying to do here. Also, I think it may be you who first suggested the App.
No offense BaldyMan, but if Haykuro doesn't have the ability to put the app up with a google account, then the 2, 5 and 10 would go to you since you would upload it, correct? Now I'm sure you're probably a good person and would give it to Haykuro, but I personally think the app should be coded so as to donate to his paypal account directly. I don't know if that's even possible, but I'm not a programmer. Basically, I think the app should be free, and you can pay haykuro directly when using it.
Just my 2 cents.

No offense taken, I currently have this poll running both here and Androidcommunity and am beggining to see the free with link as the best solution, Maybe if I release the Gold,SIlver,Bronze & a free version it will cover all bases.

Good thinking. I'm glad you didn't take offense, I'm just super paranoid. If I could hand-deliver a donation to haykuro, that'd be the best way to go for me.
Well it's been about a day since I put this up, from comments here and on Android community I have come to the following conclusions.
1. The majority are in favor of the gold/Silver/bronze option.
2. A number of people do not trust me to hand over the money to Haykuro.
3. A number of people don't like the fact that Google/T-mobile get a 30% cut.
My current thinking is to release the Gold/Silver/Bronze option at $10/$5/$2 as previously stated and also a free version. Since all versions will be identical except for the name and I will link to Haykuro's paypal in the market desciption for all of the paid apps this should please all Parties.
Please believe me that my only intention in doing this is to open another channel for donations to Haykuro, not to rip anyone off.
Just to let you all know these Apps are now on the market.
i just bought the gold edition. too bad it uses the browser to submit the donation. it would be nicer if you integrated paypal into it. imo.
I think it's a great idea, but I think a better way to go about it is to build an app similar to the JF Updater and let that have a donate button in it.
That way those who really enjoy his work also get the benefit of automatic notifications of updates.
Maybe too involved, but maybe not. Your thoughts?
I think there should be one app in the market and thats the free one. I think charging for this is a mistake. I'm sure most if not all people who have his builds also have his blog bookmarked so there really isn't a need for this whatsoever. I will use his donate link on his blog if i want to donate to him. All the money then goes directly to him.
i use jf builds and haykuro builds and other donation dev apps. it would be easy to download to any of them from one app. just an idea

This actually disgusts me.
I won't lie, I'm pro-piracy, and don't mind sites that host apps for free download, but profiting off someone else's work is frankly, sickening.
They do have a contact page, why not let them know how much you appreciate your hard work being stolen?
Looks pretty shady anyway, I'd much rather use the Android Market.
I agree. Charging people do get software you stole is worse than stealing it in the first place IMO.
I feel like I just took a trip back to a 1997 Geocities website
this is pretty much a site that leads to warez and shouldnt be posted. i am just saying.

It's being hosted by hostedsolutions, their contact info is here:

I'm sure they'd like to know what's on their servers.
Wow that's ballsy.
They even link back to the xda forums for formatting and rooting info.
And Dev's they are taking paypal payments. File a complaint with Paypal too.
They used a privacy company to hide who they are.
And then they used Tucows address as their domain registration address?
The whois phone number rings to a looped recording telling you to go to the privacy companies website. Which does not seem to work.
To bad these A$$munchs didn't also make the stupid Android7 Flash Player. We could have killed 2 birds with one stone.
If the site ever starts 'offering' SetCPU, I will do whatever is in my legal power to take them down. I can't do anything about those Chinese or Russian websites, but if it's hosted in the USA, they're going down.

Piracy is piracy. Don't think somehow a for-free piracy distribution site is any more justified than a paid one. If anything, for-free distribution sites hurt developers more than paid sites: which one do you think attracts more pirates? (Note: Don't somehow come to the twisted conclusion that I support piracy of any kind; I don't.)
The difference between the two jashsu is that there is a large contingent of the "try before you buy" type of pirates out there. They'll get a warez version of an app, and if they like it, they'll often uninstall it and pay for the market version. However, if they pay for it through a third party website, the original developer never sees that profit.
Thats not to say I support piracy, because I dont. I fully believe that people should be compensated for hard work. I'm more than willing to pay for an app up front, and if it sucks, the dev will find out by reading the refund notice when i uninstall it within 24 hours.

Please show me some numbers. To get the ball rolling, i'll post a link.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...-more-serious-than-first-though-on-iphone.ars
"The numbers that developers might find most interesting are the ones that show "conversion rates" from "lite" versions to full. Only one out of every 14 average users tends to purchase the paid version of an app after using the lite version, which is just under 7.5 percent. For pirates, the conversion rate is less than half a percent, or one out of every 233."
I download apps. If I like 'em, I pay for them. I'll usually go for a "lite" version if one exists. Anyway, rather than have this thread derailed into a debate about piracy, can we get back to the topic at hand?
I've notified the host, lets see if that does anything.
Sigh. Nothing like a little bit of piracy to set a forum on fire. Doesn't matter what forum you're visiting, could be a forum for food - and the first mention of piracy is bound to bring up what I like to call the forum nazis. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and no amount of gestapo trolling will change that. I find it interesting that people break various laws of various countries / cities / states daily and of course, it's overlooked. Someone makes mention of piracy and all of a sudden you've got the ePolice regime banging on your every post as if it were going to change something. What's my point? None, really. (But there again, there's also no point in bashing piracy, it's not going to make it any less existent.)

I mean.. maybe i'm the only one who finds that just a bit hypocritical? I would have been completely okay if he/she just said "hey dudes, theres a paid piracy site, lets get it shut down" or "I like piracy". But to go and say "I am a pirate, but these other pirates disgust me".. idk.. maybe it's just me, but that's just ridiculous.
Then again what do I know?
Also they spam the android market with there links so make sure if you see it report it as spam.
Doesn't anyone pay for their apps anymore ...
I'll admit it, I pirate apps too, but only to either try it or if I have no other way to even purchase the application.
The thing is, being a high-schooler, I have a cheap, prepaid credit card that only allows transactions in USD. Many apps aren't available in the Market in currency other than Euros or Pounds so I have no other choice to use the apps than to pirate them.
This kind of behavior where people are selling pirated copies instead of just making it available for people who otherwise can't even buy them is really annoying though... anybody thought of a way to get them shut down?
I'm honestly debating to pay for a membership and email every dev that has an app on their. The other known site I've already found 6 apps from me on their and they were removed. But since this place charges just to get a peak I'm very tempted to pay and make sure every company knows and can write C&D's to them and the host.
Piracy is always going to be an issue. Always. I have pirated apps before, usually to test out an app update I have already downloaded and refunded from the marketplace. If the update fixes things I had issues with, I will buy it. If not, then I delete it. I have bought and kept 21 apps from the marketplace so far. I believe my use of pirated apps is fair.
I am not trying to justify piracy, but merely stating it is a great tool for me. I am aware that a lot of people pirate apps just so they don't have to pay for them. I believe that is wrong. However when comparing those who distribute an app for free to those that charge for an app that is not theirs, I believe that the one who distributes for free is the lesser of the two evils. The one who distributes for free is going to reach out to more of the potential market yes, but the scumbags who actually charge for apps that someone worked hard on are the true thieves IMO. They affect a lesser share of the potential market, but keep in mind their "share" is willing to make a purchase in the first place, while the freeloaders "share" is questionable in that department.
Just my 2 cents.

Should apps be only PAID in WP?

Was reminiscing my HD7 days again...
When I had my HD7, most of the apps were, I will be honest, paid. Now before you pull the trigger on me, let me explain something.
A. I am not against paying for an app.
B. But is it necessary that a good app SHOULD b paid? (WhatsApp, Flipboard)
C. Many people do consider this as a deal-breaker before buying a phone. (My boss is one of them, to an extent I'm too.)
D. By good app, I don't mean mind-blowing 3D games. But basic apps like the ones mentioned above.
Shouldn't MS, being MS make deals with other brands and give the buyer some relief?
Opinions, view points, perspectives now welcome. :Z

Apps are created to make money - or at least most of them are.
That being said there are different ways an App can make money:
1.) It connects to a service and by it's existence promotes that service or makes it easier to use that service. In those cases the service behind the App pays for the App. (Twitter, Facebook, etc. are prime examples)
2.) Advertisments - this is the route most free Apps to my knowledge take on the Play Store. Pretty obvious how this works but I actually would rather pay 99 Cent instead of having an advertisment in my face all the time.
3.) In App Purchases - those will come with WP8 but in my experience are most often used in a way that you get a basic App with severly limited functionality which is then made functional through those expensive purchases. I personally prefer to have a price upfront so I can decide if the App is worth it.
All in all and working in software development myself I believe that good apps should be payed and I do believe that they actually should cost more than they do today. People whining over a price tag of 99 Cents for something they are going to use every day. Buy a coke at McDonalds and you pay pretty much the same for it without much whining that it should be free. Most developers don't make much money on Apps (WP or otherwise) with prices being what they are. This is by the way one of the reasons why many developers go iOS first - iPhone users are far more likely to pay for an App than Android users (looking at the statistics).
Prices being what they are Microsoft and Nokia in certain regions added a gift card to phone purchases worth 20$/€. This might be an interesting strategy for the future as well.
No, the phone itself was probably expensive enough.
The monthly bill is probably more than you are getting out of it.
Where does it stop ?
Television was once free in many places, now I believe everybody pays for it.
If you want "premiuim" channels you pay more again.
We pay for internet connections.
If the developer of an application wants to charge for it so be it, if he wants it to be free so be it.
Freedom of choice.
LL13-
When TV is free it is paid for by the country that operates it. Somewhere someone has to pay for it. If it is payed through taxes you also pay for it although you might not notice. Pay-TV-channels are new - which means: they would not exist were they not payed. It is the same for many of those Apps. If Microsoft were to intervene to get certain Apps for free on the platform they would have to regain that cost somewhere which perhaps would drive up the per-unit-pricing of the phones.
I'm not trying to force people to make their App payed, of course it's the developers choice. But all this whining about 99 Cents for a good App you use frequently just has to stop. Effort goes into making those Apps, people spend time implementing and polishing them. They should receive something for that.
Soo, here i am thinking about the newest (and first) WP8 phone ever announced, the Samsung (insert weird name here).
Now on android i am having 90~ apps that i use daily.. now i am pretty sure i'll find them once the OS get's released but if everything will be paid that's a dealbreaker for me.. i don't want to pay too much for a phone and (0.99$ per app) 90~ $ more.
So nope, for me they should be free, actually app developers should decide.
Most of the apps on my last 3 wp7s were paid and most of them were awful. I do not mind paying for apps at all.

If your in the US, TV is free if you can live with the programming you will get. FCC mandates that all HDTV channels (non premium channels)are broadcasted over the air.
Depending on where you live you can get some but, you might only get a few (I get 4 and not the major networks but, it is free)
Not everyone pays for it...but, most people pay because they want more than 5-7 channels.
As for the topic on hand. I think there should be free apps, some apps I will never use if I can't try them.
It amazes me how cheap some people are! Devs work there nuts off to bring you apps and you don't think they should get paid for that hard work?
MS will NEVER demand that all apps be paid apps that's crazy1 They limit the daily submissions to stop crapware like soundboards that plague the play store. Its a choice the dev makes and most offer you the choice with free versions supported by adds or paid versions (supertube for instance). The WP market place even has a section for free apps and games etc and some rock (archery for one).
All in all i think MS has done a great job keeping app standards high. They could of gone the Android route and let anything pass just to get the numbers up but they didnt! Also not MS offer trials when android and ios normally have lite versions though i see more slipping into the market.

Help for Speech on Piracy

So, today we were assigned to write a 3-5 minute persuasive speech for Engrish class. My topic is "why piracy is not bad".
Can you guys help with some arguments?
Thanks!
Mods: let me know if this is inappropriate for this forum.
Why piracy isn't bad? That's the first!
Piracy is essentially "copying" rather than thievery.
Art shouldn't be "owned" it belongs to the people.
Content makers refuse to make art freely available and instead force people to "pirate" it to have it at their fingertips in the new digital age.
And finally XDA isn't the place for this discussion.

Good subject and certainly interesting.
However I don't see this topic lasting long because it enters an area that XDA would rather not have discussed in the forum sections.
Good luck with your paper!
Piracy, per say the duplication and distribution of copyrighted material, is not considered good in any way. Its illegal and promoting it is not allowed on XDA.
Sent from the phalanges of my hand to the facet of your cranium.
Um piracy is bad.
It's obtaining a copy of copyrighted material. Yea, it's fine to install it, but once you use any tool to not pay for activation, that's where it gets illegal.
Same with music. And art should not belong to the people. Then what would copyrights be for? You think I want my photos to be freely available to everyone without any compensation?
They call it piracy and stealing
-i prefer to call it freedom!

What kind of piracy? Torrenting, illegal file sharing, ripping movies?
This video would be great for statistics . . .
If I take a picture with my phone's camera of the Mona Lisa and print it life size (which is quite small) on a photoprinter to hang in my living room, it's legal.
If I film a film with my phone's camera to review later at home, it's illegal, while I'm doing the exact same thing .
Piracy has been the stepping stone for many young artists. A recordscompany asks insane amounts of money to publicize your music, money which no starting artist has. Radiochannels won't play your music without you paying them for it. Pop it on youtube/tpb and it doesn't cost you thing, and it reaches everyone.
That is why so many people are made to believe piracy is bad: it's missed income for companies. Not the artists, the companies. Of the song you buy, 8 cents at mos goes to the artist. the rest goes to the label and copyright company. Ditto for games, the 3D artists and scriptors get a low pay, while the company and coyright company earns big bucks for doing nothing. That is fundementally wrong. Money should go to those who earn it, not those who profit off other people's work! And guess what they blame pirates for: doing what the copyright company does.
What people dont seem to understand is that piracy is not the same as copyright infringement. When you take someone else's product and claim it as your own, that is copyright infringement.
I'm a graphic designer, I deal with copyright daily. Having someone else post my work on his tumblr with credit is perfectly fine. As long as he doesn't call it his own work!. See the core issue, there? Credit where credit is due. Nobody on TPB is claiming a film made in Hollywood as his own, they're not infringing on anyone's copyright, and they're not making money off it.
If you consider sharing anything with copyright as illegal, you are also not allowed to like stuff on facebook (it shares), retweet something (sharing someone else's tweet)... (Which is what SOPA and ACTA would have done. They would have completely destroyed the free internet. Just so someone else can make money. It was never about censorship, it was about money. (If it isn't about sex, it's about money and power. The very core of humanity, right there.)
Used to be you could go to a music store and listen to the whole album. Now, you can't. Oh you can listen to samples on iTues, but if you don't have a credit card, which millions of people dont, you can't get into the itunes store. Everywhere else you have to pay to listen.
The same goes for Google Play. In europe we use Maestro, not credit cards. (Direct withdrawel). You can't get a credit card if you don't have a steady, high income, and paying with them in stores costs extra, if its even possible. Google Play only works with credit cards (to use mobile payment, you need to make a wallet account, which requires a credit card.) so everyone under 25 of the 750 million nhabitant of Europe can't buy apps in google play. Devs can whine all they want, that's just the fact. They (we) literally can't buy your apps! As such, piracy becomes the only option.
Sony has recently been looking into new ways to make 2nd hand games impossible. Many a company preceeded this. Thus taking away your right to sell what you don't need. Simply because they don't get income from 2nd hand games.
Piracy is a way to tell the greedy companies that we don't accept their near mob-related practises. A lot less destructive than rioting, I'd say.
And last but not least: The European Court Of Human Rights has recently declared convictions for file sharing to be in direct violation of Human Rights. Dear America, Welcome to the 21st century. Where the EU is the more civilized continent. They can no longer convict anyone in Europe for file sharing.

Essentially, it's only 'piracy' because people are missing out on money when people share things. And that's why piracy isn't wrong: Greed is.
Hope some of this is of use I'm in a lecture on research, so plenty of time to type a rant or two (I actually did a paper on this topic for uni...)

ive made £4 in a couple of months.(i made a couple of apps 50p just to see what happens/stop all those promo sites integrating my wares as their own.)
now i get this:
Tax information required
Tax regulations in the US require that Google have complete and accurate tax information for our customers. Such forms are required in the event that a payee is located in the US or whose content is sold in the US. Please update your tax information in order to get paid.
Do i need to do this? Will i burn in hell for it?
And do i need to be a "business"?
im an idiot.
i hear that this is where people who actually know what they are talking about lurk.
help.
what is everyone's thoughts on this? any UK users had to do this?
I'm also interested how to deal with it
Hi,
Sorry for the late reply..
But YES, you need to fill these forms out. No you won't burn in hell so long as you are no a US citizen, do not carry out business in the US, etc.. (read what it says on the form). For 95% of developers this will be the case.
You will need to declare your earnings to HMRC.. I would check out if there is a lower limit below which it can be considered a "hobby", otherwise you should become a sole trader or a Ltd company. This will require year-end accounts to be filed, which could cost you about £500-£800 for an accountant.
Send me a PM if you would like some help. Also, I have bought developer's accounts in the past so might be interested in yours.
