Question about 3G in US. - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Yes i have a question concerning about the 3G network for AT&T. I have read alot of sticky's, threads new and old and can't seem to get a definite answer to what i am looking for. I really didnt want to post this, but i have searched everything by going into the search tab at the top. So i was wondering does the version Diam100 from EU/Asia have the hardware to support 3G for AT&T. I know it says it in the tabs on the phone that it can recieve the 3G band, but i have read its the hardware that can't but they werent sure. I've also read that some people say it needs a newer radio and/or ROM to get 3G. I really dont want to flash a new radio onto my phone if i dont need it. Can someone so kind as to tell me if it is or it is not capable so i can decide to keep the phone or not.
Thank you ever so much,
Xero

EU/Asia diamond won't work in US, i even tired swapping a US radio into a Euro Diamond and still didn't work. Only US diamond with US radio will give you 3G.
Hope it helps.

Kinda figured. But how bout this. Can anybody answer this its most likely a no but im just curious. Can you add/change the hardware from inside to receive 3G? And if so how? I know the answer is a no but someone might of done it or figured it out without messing up the phone.

us vs north america

Does Diamond support USA GSM bands? I think mine do.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think my Diamond (bought from Hong Kong) support USA GSM network. Please see the attached picture, it shows UMTS8500+1900 + GSM850+1900 as an option in the phone setting manual.
I made this post because I saw many people complain that the first batch of Diamond doesn't support USA GSM bands but only the Asia and Euro one.
Can u check al lines, mines is:
UMTS(900+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
UMTS(800+2100)
UMTS(850+2100)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(850)+GSM(900+1800)
UMTS(1700)
Mine is working is USA!
It may support those bands but it wont actually get you 3G access in America because the non American Diamonds are missing the 3G attenna. Its not a software problem but a hardware problem.
If you want to use 3G in America then wait till the American version of the Diamond is out.
the bands being able to be selected means that the RIL (radio interface layer) CAN support those bands, that DOES NOT MEAN that your Phone Hardware can support it.
The software interface is probably not smart enough to adjust itself to match hardware.
The HK Diamond hardware spec said it is a triband GSM phone. It does not have GSM850. I'm not sure if this is just a marketing / sales spec.
Anyone tested this in the US? Or any hardware/radio engineer on this forum to validate this spec?

Well the HK Diamond Spec is incorrect, it "could" be quoting the US specs but the US version isnt out for another month at least.

I though this would be a good place to post this question.
I have the same bands listed as post # 2. Now my phone came out of the box like it is. No radio or rom upgrades, yet. Does that mean its Quad band unlocked already from the box? Or do I still have to load the latest radio?
Hard to say without knowing wich radio you have.

My radio is 1.00.25.03, so I would assume it's not quad band without putting one of the newer radios?
triband TD
when i got my TD, it was listed a triband. I could still use in the USA because
ATT uses 900 band also. However, their primary band is 850. THe reception with the 900 only band was spotty. I then flashed my ROM (see below) and a new radio.....05 and immediately got 4 bars where i got 1 or none. MUch improvement. However, you will NOT get 3G until you get a USA phone. It uses Edge now, (which for me is fast enough). ITs a hardware think not a ROM or radio upgrade thing to get 3G.
BTW this is my current ROM and i am very happy with my TD now. Best phone ive ever had.
Rom 1.93.456.2 WWE
Rom Date 7-10-08
Radio Version 1.00.25.05
Hard SPL 1.24
Protocol Version 52.29.25.12H

I saw your auction. Sorry, but I can't believe you're getting 3G on that phone without at least ONE bar showing in the pic!!
If the european version is missing the antenae then if he was in an area with strong enough signal wouldn't it show the 3G icon and maybe even only one bar, but that is not usable.

The 3G has nothing to do with the bars.. it says 3g next to the bars if you have it.. (at the same place as the active sync icon is) I haven't seen the picture though so I'm not going to say anything..

So that makes me wonder why you haven't dumped the radio off the phone and let other people test it out. If in fact it is just a DIAM100 model with a modified radio to unlock the 850 gsm band.

The hardware he has is the DIAM160, not the DIAM100.

Touch HD

Question #-1: How can I get my hands on one of these? I called HTC and they stated that this is not offered in the US.
Question #-2: Now should I be able to get my hands on this device..would the radio work on T-Mobile's Network?
Question #-3: What would be the potential cost? I can unlock it myself.
Suggest you go to the correct forum.
The Touch HD has it's own one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=451

Just because I have the time.
1. You need to buy an unlocked version online, just google it.
2. It is GSM and unlocked, it should work with T-Mobile, but is not compatible with any US 3G networks. So for now only 2G
3. You can only but it unlocked, I have seen anywhere from $700 to $1000
Thank you Denco7..that was exactly the information that I needed......I am a Tilt owner...so unlike the previous moron who posted he could have saved that shizznick for someone who cares...
Also one more thing Denco7...do you know if I could swap the Radio on that phone for the one on another HTC Touch Device thats domestic? Now If you don't know this answer..I can understand me going to the TouchHD Forum for this answer...I just thought i'd prick your head real quick...
As denco7 stated, you'll have 2G network speeds but you won't get 3G. Unfortunately, that's a hardware limitation. Something that changing the radio cannot fix.

WW Radio

Is the lack of ability to support the US AT&T 3G frequencies a ROM issue or a hardware issue?
I really don't know. From reading it is a hardware issue....but.... if it's like the TP2 and you go to where you can select which bands to use the AT&T bands are listed.

The AT&T bands are not listed as being supported. I was hoping it was a ROM issue so that a radio ROM could fix the issue. It looks as if that is not the case. Makes no sense to me why HTC would want two different GSM based hardware platforms to support.
They did it with the first TP though. The European TP has no US 3g bands

I did not realize that because I am still using the Kaiser. There must be some good reason they chose to do this, but it escapes me. Anyway, unless there is a possibility for a ROM enablement, and it appears there is not, there is no need to continue this thread. Too bad! Thank you all for your responses.

It is not listed on the site but is listed in the phone itself. If I understand right the reason that it does not support tri or quad band 3G is that the processor is built with only specific bands. When the tecnology is there to squeeze more bands in with it then we will get what we want.
Or something like that.

tmobile bands

ok i'm very confused with the 3g bands stuff...so i would like to know if i can use the great britain g1 in us with 3g? and also do i need to unlock the phone? even tho its the same network like us a england tmobile in us with tmobile thanx

I wouldn't base anything on what you see in that thread.... some of what is written there is quite simply WRONG.
Specifically, the theory that it may be 3G in one way and 2G in the other way? LOL! Impossible! If the thing says 3G, its 3G in BOTH DIRECTIONS.
I can't say if there's a difference or not between the europe and north american versions... I *doubt* that there is, but don't hold me to that.

Anyone want to buy me an HD7

I want an HD7 and wondered if any XDA-member could purchase one from o2 and i would pay them through PayPal and they could ship me the phone. I am in the US and on AT&T
Why don't you just go down to Walmart? They have them there already. Besides you'r on ATT and will get no 3g I thought with one from O2? I believe you need one from Telstra (Australian) network and your 3g will work.

I see the rebel sim cards are being developed for wp7 so perhaps 3g is still in the game if i get a tmobile version. I s being on edge versus 3g really that big of a difference anyway?
oh yeah, it's like swimming in tar lol (edge).
Isn't the phone Quad Band? Surely the device will work on all of the GSM networks?
I hope it's that or it's going to be quite a mission finding the right device to work on the right networks int the right countries.
in the u.s., the only 2 big gsm carriers (at$t, t-mo) operate on different bands. the rest of the world is ok lol, the telstra(sp) operates on at$t w/ 3g, any one else on t-mo gets edge.

Ah, ok
So would the T-Mobile HD7 work on standard GSM bands (900MHz and 1800MHz for South Africa)?
