What is stand alone GPS - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I noticed that the tilt has "Stand alone GPS" what does what mean?
Will my GPS work on the tilt, even if I am not subscribed to a service where I have to pay a monthly fee? My TomTom, for example, requires no monthly fee, will my tilt function like that?
I am trying to decide whether it's worth it for me to buy the tilt.
Thanks!

yes depending on what gps software you use
if you buy tomtom or gamin software for your kaiser
then you pay once only
it will not use the phone network at all
but if you use google maps for gps maps it will transfer a lot of data

You don't pay for the GPS, you pay for the maps.
The phone has a GPS antena and a GPS processing chip, it receives the signals from the satellites and calculates the time and your coordinates. This is all the phone does.
The rest depends on the GPS software you install in it. Some use maps in a local folder, some download them from the Internet as needed.

GPS Data Charge

Hi was in vodafone shop yesterday, looking at v1615 and got talking about GPS. I assumed that mobile GPS involves phone and software and thats all spending done the guy in the shop said that GPS involves connection hence a data charge, is this true and what approx is the average data charge.
Thanks
Marc
GPS itself does not use the cellular radio. If you get a standalone GPS app, there is no data charge. You can confirm this if you want by turning off the phone, wifi, and bluetooth radios, then using GPS. If you use the App included on the AT&T tilt, this application connects to the internet to download map data, and you will be charged for data. Applications like Garmin XT, or many other available applications do not use data connections at all.
Jozer99, Do you have any reccommended GPS software for the kaiser?
The most common seem to be tom tom and co-pilot
tomtom and garmin...its free to use...but ur gonna have to purchase it before hand...but after that its free to use day to day

GPS Question, searched to no avail

I have read a lot of GPS Threads and not seen this answer. I do not have a data plan, have MediaNet disabled, and noticed with TomTom I still got turn by turn directions.
Is there any hidden data fees hiding on th horizon for me or does the GPS function free?
TomTom does not use any data from your carrier. It gets all its data from the saved map files on your phone. I believe only Telenav uses your data connection. I am positive TomTom does not use it. It can, to download new voices or maps if you request it to, but if you disabled medianet then don't it can't.

For a basic GPS-101 question like this, don't search this forum, search Google....for example...searching for "Is GPS free?" tells you the answer in the very first hit. The answer is... of course GPS is free. GPS is nothing more than the hardware in your Kaiser picking up the signals from the array of Global Positioning Satelites and triangulating your position from them.
You have a map in TomTom. Your Kaiser GPS picks up the signals from the Global Positioning System satelites and calculates your position and passes this information to TomTom. With TomTom knowing where you are (from GPS), where you want to go (from your selected destination), and how to get there (from the map file you downloaded for TomTom)...it has everything it needs to calculate your route and provide you turn by turn directions. There is no additional information TomTom needs so there is no internet access and therefore no data useage charges. The only time TomTom will access the internet (and therefore incur data charges) is if you use TomTom Plus services such as Traffic, Weather, Buddies, etc. But this has absolutely nothing to do with GPS.

Just to add detail: Tom Tom (version 6 at least) has 3 functions that might start a data connection but each can either be disabled or avoided:
1. There are a few Tom Tom extras that require a data connection - Tom Tom Plus.
2. There is Tom Tom Weather too and that will also begin a data connection IF you ask for weather.
3. The last feature may also be available to you. Tom Tom Traffic is another premium service BUT your software may have a demo version available - and you've guessed it - it requires a data connection.
Make sure none of these are requested (or enabled in the case if Tom Tom Traffic) and Tom Tom should NOT initiate any data calls (and unwanted charges) .

Is it possible to use gps on my tilt and not get any extra charges?

i have att tilt and i want to use the gps function. i dont have a data plan, or am i paying for gps on my bill.
i would love to keep it that way, is it possible?
to use gps and not get charged for anything? not even data?
thank.
link would help.
gps is built into the phone...
you'll need something like tomtom to use it though, but you can play around with it with a program like this:
http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/
-VisualGPSce is a free PocketPC application that displays GPS data graphically as well as record the raw GPS data (NMEA 0813) to a file. Other features include satellite azimuth/elevation, GPS signal quality, analog gauges and statistical position averaging
Edit: there is a 'Taster Version' of TomTom out there that you can get for free with one small Map (local city map) just use the Search Function on here to find it
Also note that "if" you ever activated AGPS then it WILL use internet. If you turn the GPS on and it tries to connect to a internet connection chances are you have AGPS on or the application needs to use the internet.**to save any questions AGPS(assisted gps) uses your internet connection to hold onto a gps signal when you are in an area where GPS signal is low, usually only activated by KaiserTweak, Advanced Configuration, most new ROM builds come with it activated.
Why would you be charged?
i would get charged for data.. i dont have data plan. nor do i want one.
As I stated IF AGPS is active then it will use you internet connection when it needs to(if you dont have a media plan then it is going to charge you pay per use). If AGPS is not active then dont worry about it. To double check just use KaiserTweak and make sure its disabled and you WONT GET CHARGED
Garmin XT is another nice piece of GPS software and seems to have better mapping abilities in the U.S. where TomTom seems better for Europe (different mapping companies: Navteq vs. Tele Atlas).
Garmin XT has a section called "Garmin Online" that has info such as Hotel rates, gas prices for all grades and diesel at areas around you and other cities, sending peer-points to others, as well as weather info.
You can opt not to use the "Garmin Online" if you want. I'd still disable the AGPS with the Tweak tool to be safe - else you could see a hefty Data Connect fee.

GPS-A (Gps assist), hardware or software?

Hi,
I know (for example) the HTC Diamond, the internal GPS does an GPS Assist (send data packet to network to help GPS do triangulation, speeding GPS location. The obvious problem, is that I have to paid to my service provider that (one) data packet (in my case, 0.33€).
What I really dont know, if this is a software or hardware specification. I want to sincronyze my Niki with an Holux 236 (I'm searching for one), and I dont know I will have to paid anything to navigate around my country.
Anyone can help me?
Hi, I think we all need some clarification on the GPS vs. aGPS.
Here is a good article to read:
http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs_agps_a_quick_tutorial.html
In conclusion you need a receiver in order to have any type of GPS on your phone. In most cases aGPS doesn’t require the maps to be present on your phone as they are been downloaded in real time.
If you have a GPS receiver on your phone you can use other software (like Garmin or TomTom) with maps loaded on you card. In this case there is no need for data communication and you can use it without paying aGPS fees. I confirm that as I use it on my Neon400.
The location identification through tower triangulation cannot be done with good accuracy and not in “real time”. It is not reliable for car navigation but it is used for police, etc to find your approx. location.

[Q]online gps tracker/navigation(not using direct gps satelite but via data plan)

Not sure what you mean.
GPS uses satellites. Phones use data plan to load maps. Some applications like TomTom load 1.5GB of maps on the SD card, but still use GPS chip to talk to satellite. If you don't use GPS you don't use satellites. You can use AGPS that uses cell phone towers, but it is not very accurate.
In summary. If you don't use satellites, you won't be very accurate. You can get basic location, but never use phone for turn by turn navigation.
