Goto Settings > Communication and turn off Data Connection.

Also, NoData.
Does what it says on the tin.

Why use NoData when one can simply turn off Data Connection from the Settings? Is there any other benefit?

Its my understanding the turning off the Data Connection from the Settings only turns it off once, it can reconnect itself if some program (email, internet) demands it, NoData disables the connection and it can only be re-enabled by changing it in NoData.
I think I'm correct ?

I dunno about NoData since I personally want to have Data, but I can confirm that disabling the data through the settings doesn't work as you would expect. It's true, the data will be reenabled if the email or web client request it.

You can also just delete the data connection. I just went to connections and removed the settings for at&t media net and now I no longer connect to edge.

Bump
Is there a definitive answer to this question? Specifically, I want MMS enabled, GPRS / 3G / HSPDA disabled (So it won't enable if I load Opera etc without having wireless connectivity).
Actually, I'd prefer to be given the option each time a new data connection is to be established, but I'd settle for no mobile data and remove the option when I wanted to use it.
No included data means that *any* accidental mobile access is expensive!

How to turn off data services on wing (tmobile)?

I have a tmobile wing and will be discontinuing my use of their internet services.. I want to use the phone only as a phone. I have gone ahead and cancelled my internet plan with them, but i'm concerned my phone still might be using some data services and i'll get charged for each kb.
Is there a way to turn off all data services on the phone?
I've gone ahead and make sure the mail is set to check manually, but i'm concerned there might be some app i forgot about that is set up to check automatically
I believe you can just go to
Settings -> Connections -> Connections and delete your plans, that way the phone wouldn't knwo how to connect ( i think )
yes, you have to delete like 2 or 3 settings in connections, is there a way to specify only to connect through wifi so it doesn't look for gprs?
install Schaps tool ... and u can disable them easily there.

can you provide a little more detail about which one? Looks like he has a few tools/apps
advances configuration tool
u can open the comm manager and disable data
With T-Mobile, they won't let you connect to their network without a data plan. When I got my wing, I got my wife a Dash and no data plan for her. For the first day or two she could connect to the internet via data, so I called a CSR and they told me that if you don't have a data plan, you can not connect at all. No charge by the kb crap that verizon (former customer) pulls. Once you cancel, you are good to go. No extra charges. BTW, 2 hours after I called CS, her data stopped working. I think someone forgot to pull the plug when I signed her up.
like "splayer7" said just cancle your data plan and you will be fine.. there is a glitch with tmobile network from time to time you may get data service BUT you dont get charge for it... it will stop working on its own (i know i work for tmob) IF you reall dont want the phone to connect to data go to settings ---> connections... then click on connection..you should see t-mobile data.. click on manage existing connections.. TAP AND HOLD tmobile data and you should see a submenu come up with connect and delete..select delete and you should be good....

Data logging / tracking app

Im getting some very expensive data bills coming in from when I am roaming. I get a popup whenever my email trys to connect asking if i want to connect and incur roaming charges. I deny this and use webmail from my laptop. I do not use the internet or anything else. Yet Ive still used 4MB in 24 hours while in Germany a couple of weeks ago!
Is there an app that can tell me what is connecting, when and how much data it has transferred?
Ie..
Weatherpanel - 29/06/08 @ 14:10 - 130kb
Outlook - 02/07/08 @ 07:00 - 30kb
Does Phonealarm or SPB monitor go this indepth?
could you not disable all connections and therefore have no charges?
Try spb gprs monitor and see....it has a free trial
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/?en
And like Humz said, you could always just kill your gprs connection altogether under settings and/or using Modaco's NoData

phoneAlarm (http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html) will allow you to turn on/off the data connection based on the profile - and the new v2.0 can automatically switch the profile when you are roaming, so that you have no possibility to connect when roaming.
The data tracking in phoneAlarm will show the exact amount of data transferred - but not which application was responsible.
LCMinutes
Another good app is LCMinutes. I have free 500MB of data transfers to be used every month and I use LCMinutes to make sure I don't use any more than that.
You can get it here: http://lctools.blogspot.com/2008/01/some-links-to-lcminutes.html

detecting programs initiating data connection

Hi,
I'm looking for a soft that would detect and identify which programs (softwares or other) initiate data connections on my kaiser.
I disabled all data-retrieving options on the different softs I have (weather,time,...), but it still connects without my wanting !
Anyone knows something that would do that ?
Thanks.
Good question and I too would be interested in the answer. Mine started doing this a few days ago and has since stopped again!
Activesync and MMS messaging
Both of these programs will switch on your data connection. I changed my mms settings to reject and changed my data connection to my work network to keep it from using data. That worked for me until I added unlimited data to my plan.
Spb Wireless Monitor does a great job at this. It isn't free, but I like it. I have it set as a Today Screen plugin to only show my MediaNet connection, but it can also show USB and wifi data usage. It will give you reports on what's using data, how much it's used, and when it was used. You can also set it to alert you before you go over your limit. It's at http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/wirelessmonitor/?en
Indeed, SPB wireless monitor is great.
I was looking exactly for the same sort of solution, since after reinstalling some apps I was having too large GPRS data loads.

Unable to turn off Tilt data connections

I am unable to turn off current data connections on my Tilt. I'm using MoDaCo's "No Data". So I decided to try shutting off data connections with KaiserTweak. I'd set the Data connections to disabled but data still comes thru. When I try to shut if off with NoData I get this message "Connection disabled. You will need to manually duscinnect if a GPRS connection is currently active". Anyone know whats goin on here?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
You could always go into settings ---->connections----->connections----->manage connections and delete anything there..... it cant connect if it doesnt know what to connect to................
I'm not looking to completely delete it. I just want to be able to disable it when I'm around WiFi.

correct me if I'm wrong, NoData is only to disable data connections before it connects.
so if U already have a data connection (not WIFI) active, U need to disconnect the data connection first.
After that, your tytn will not be able to turn on the data connection unless U "enable" the settings in NoData.
hope it helps.

I'm not familiar enough about NoData to know if it only disables a data connection before connecting or not. Sometimes when I connect I get the pop up window saying I'm connecting. Other times I don't. There's usually a big "3G" up at the top of the phone and when I connect I gt a little "3G window.

Noob here but....I used Kaisertweaks and it blocks GRPS for me.

When I try to do it thru KaiserTweaks I set it to Disable. When u disable yours does it say enabled or disabled when in Kaisertweaks? Does anyone at all know what going on here?

Mine says disabled. I pretty much set everything under "data" to disable. I'm in a wifi paradise so screw att.
torp74
In connections I set it under one without any settings. Its been working for me so far. When I DO want to connect I just switch it back to medianet. Everything else works as normal.
Even when I change it to disabled it continues to say enabled under settings? I've even tried to reinstall Kaisertweaks but still get the same results. Has anyone else come across this problem? This is getting frustrating.

[Q] How can I remove internet?

Hey guys the G1 data plan is getting too expensive for me and I'm planning to cancel soon. After I call in and cancel, how can I get my G1 to stop trying to access the internet unless its Wifi? Or once I cancel I won't have to worry about this?
I also heard a rumor about changing the APN settings so you can still have and use the internet? Is this true?
no real way to stop the phone from accessing the web since even in the background it sends packets of information. that's just how the phone works that's why you need the data plan for this phone.
i want to cancel the plan cause my sis is paying for mine and i dont want her paying 300$+ a year on me. but i dont want to be charged after i cancel the plan cause my g1 is still accessing the internet. Anyways to prevent it from accessing the internet?

i just said no there is no way to to shut off the internet due to the fact that the phone requires you to have a google account to run it even if you flash a adp build and skip the logon proceedure the phone still access the web in the background without you knowledge you will still get billed for data charges at t mobs data rate which i think is 25 to 50 cents per meg used.
disable auto sync
if you disable auto sync you wont be accessing the internet much (assuming you don't have a ton of news widgets or something) then sync when you're connected to wifi (toggle settings works well for this)

the problem is even with auto sync off the phone still polls the internet in the background for updates and other things you could remove every internet reliant app off your phone and it still polls the internet it just the way android is designed he want to stop all internet traffic which is impossible without hacking the rom beyond what we do or pulling out the sim. even google maps requires to poll the internet in the background without him even turning it on. it's just impossible to stop it completely.
Install APNdroid.
Easiest, simplest, most reliable way: Go into settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, then click on each one and hit menu then delete. You will also need to finangle with tmobile through their customer service number in order to get them to cancel 3g for your G1 (they have some kind of a policy that's supposed to mean that you have to have an unlimited data plan with the G1, but if you're patient with them they'll let you cancel and just have voice.)
Even easier way. Download Toggle Data from market. That's what I've been using since I cancelled my plan. No more data in the background, so my battery life is longer. Sometimes my phone goes like 2-3 days without charge. (Of course without using wifi)
apns not only control how the phone connects to the internet it also handles how it connects to make calls which is also how it connect to edge/3g. so see the conundrum we have here removing all apns also kills making calls.
Before I bricked my G1, (I don't have a data plan) I just went to the T-Mobile store and told the guy what I could do to stop the internet. He just changed some kind of port number and stopped the internet so I don't get charged.

I use apndroid all the time(to save battery) and I can still send/receive calls with it.

i wasn't talking about apndroid
i was talking about the guy who told him to delete all his apns
if i use apndroid will i still be able to use wifi? also im using a JACHero's rom and i noticed this in the settings...
Data Sync > Google > Background Date Usage [X]
APN Droid only kills the data.

No, the APN controls cellular data (internet and MMS) only. Voice and SMS are "built in" so to speak - as long as the SIM matches yoru carrier's records, they will work.
Deleting the APNs (or using APNdroid) will block cellular data, leaving voice, SMS and WiFi internet unaffected.
