smart resident.exe problem - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks!
I got a problem with the smart resident.exe.
When my Xperia (running TouchIT v10.3) starts up I get the message that smart resident.exe couldnt be found and I should eventually reinstall it.
programms which require smart resident like slovo ed sadly dont work for me
how can I fix this?
The screen that pops up looks like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=158253&d=1234889244
only that its on my xperia
EDIT: can somebiody with touch x attach their smart resident file so that I can simply copy it over to my device and see if it works?!

Uninstall SlovoEd.
Go to "My Device/Windows/StartUp"
There you should find Smart Resident.lnk, delete that and it should be fine.
Well that worked for me.

I know that slovoEd hast this smart resident lnk file.
Its like you sayd in device\windows\startup and there its called Solovoed 7.lnk and this points out to:
device\windows\slovoed 7\smart resident.exe but this smart resident.exe isnt there!
I got the error message (from the attached image file) even before slovoed was installed

Reinstalling a SlovoEd dictionary (Talking Concise Oxford English Dictionary for Windows Mobile) solved this problem for me.

Hi
unfortunatly i have this problem and I couldn't delete this file.
pleas help me.
thanks
bye

Tx FlimFlam!
I installed my language version & it did the trick. BTW: I noticed that for whatever reason, SlovoEd had "uninstalled" (?) itself. Meaning: I had not used it in a while & it was not visible in the Menu structure any longer. Without having checked: probably most files were still there.

Hi
go to my device/windows/startup
and delet ( Slovoed )
I did it and my problem solved.
say if that worked or no .

Reviving an older thread here...
it seems like there has been no proper solution this far. there is a few things one can do. they have been posted up above already. unfortunately this thread does not clarify what actually happens there.
let me try to add some info/findings of my own.
SmartResident.exe appears to be a module which sits in the memory, resident. i was not able to figure out what it is meant to do there tho, since the english or german menu items in SlovoEd, the donor of that little nuisance, are so totally badly translated that i couldn't gather their meaning.
I suppose that it is meant to catch words one marks and translates them via right-click or so, similar to babylon's pretty neat function.
It does not succeed in doing so tho. Hence it is useless.
What might be the reason for the warning at boottime? The missing Resident? Well, there is at least two reasons: either u did a hard reset and it just got wiped or u installed a new ROM while u kept SlovoEd on the storage card. This would have wiped the resident as well since it is not located on the card but always on main mem. And of course it might well be that u just messed with ur files and accidentally deleted the resident...
So, how to get rid of it? Mainly read above. Summary below.
1.) u can try to "fix" up the SlovoEd.lnk or SmartResident.lnk file in the \\windows\AutoStart\ or alternatively \\windows\StartUp\ folders. Just open them with a text editor and put in some crap, point them to some useless executable file.
2.) run a script each shutdown time to delete the .lnk file. eg MortScript or so.
3.) Re-Run any SlovoEd Dictionary or Engine Installer. When using a Dictionary-Installer make sure to select engine-setup as well since this will place the Resident into \\windows\SlovoEd 7\ where it is supposed to sit. Note: this will NOT get rid of the resident but fix a corrupt installation and thus make the annoying warning at boottime disappear.
4. option 4 will be my pref. keep a backup of SmartResident.exe in the SlovoEd 7 folder on the card and just copy it back over to its original location in case it gets destroyed...
cheers,
Sneaky

Question on using the extended ROM properly

I'm just starting to get into the depths of my PDA2K and this site is GREAT!!!!!!! Since I'm just one step up from "The Village Idiot", I have a couple questions for all you pros.
After reading about using the extended ROM, and unlocking it and seeing what's in there, I think I've figured it out. Whatever CABs are listed in the config file will be installed upon a hard reset....correct? If true, and since I have only 3.5MB left in Ex ROM, can I put the other CABs I wanted installed in say /storage/CABs, list them in the config file and upon a hard reset they will be installed? Is there any reason to put them into Extended ROM rather than Storage? Is it alright to put CABs in from like games, Resco Explorer, WebIS Mail, etc.? Lastly is there a way to set the programs up where I don't have to go back and enter all the registration numbers again?
Thanks a ton for your help!!!
Tom
In extended rom they are not taking up your precious storage space on the device.

is it possible then to keep the installation cabs on storage card,
and also, can that path be set in the config file in ext rom?
what happens if a particular cab is not found after hard reset?
is the installation stuck or it just gives a warning and keeps on going to the next cab listed in the list.
Have a read of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=83119#83119
It might be a bit to deep but should help you along the way.
1) You can keep a cab anywere you want
2) make sure your cab is read only as it can delete itsself after install.
3) to run a auto install from a differnet storage place you need to hack the reg (see thread).
In all if you have a sd card you could leave your EXt rom empty.
Hack the reg to the new postion and run the Autorun from there.
Have fun
Thanks for all the infor everyone! From what I've read in other threads I need to make sure that TPdisabled is set to off so that when programs like WebIS Mail and SplashID get installed I can touch the screen to make sure they install into the right place and other things. Correct? If this is correct, should I just remove TPdisabled all together?
Thanks again,
Tom
TPdisabled can't be set off, its either run or not run. So dump it and you wont have a problem
MDAIIIUser - Thanks for the link! I looked at it and you're right, it's pretty indepth and I'll have to read it more closely at a later time....like at work.
Question1: leochan2005 had a follow-up saying "why not use backup"? While I agree this would be easier, I'm assuming that by using your method one would get a much "cleaner" install than backing up all the crap that was on the system prior to the hard reset...correct?
Question2: It took me a long time to get my TMo settings setup on my PDA2K and I don't want to go thru that again. Is there a way to backup those settings so that they can be auto-configured at a later time? I read about making a personalsettings.CAB but haven't done it yet.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks! I take it it should be at the beginning of the config file so that I can access it. Correct?
q1)
Well the short of "why not use backup" is you can if you feel that:
1) Restoring Regedit values from a lower rom version
2) Restoring system applications form a lower rom version such as BT
are called for, wanted or even needed.
I fail to see that point as a upgrade is an upgrade and a backup is a backup. Now you could do a restore of your system data also (which you could also sync and that would be clean
Q2)
Most fo those settings are part of T-mobile.cabs found in Extrom, the rest would have been reg entries that you are going to have to hunt for and copy.
So sorry no way around reading the other thread (personalsettings.CAB)
MDAIIIUser - Maybe I should state what I'm trying to accomplish and you could give me a clue as to how to do it. A couple days ago I upgraded by BT on my PDA2K (generic from Expansys) to 1.0.0.3900 (or what ever the latest is) and I'm currently looking at upgrading my radio to 1.12, but that would require a hard reset. I'm not in the mood to go thru all the program installs and SMS/MMS tweaking again, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get all my programs and configurations back after the hard reset. I thought by incorporating the personalsettings.cab (for my Tmo settings) and your method I would be up and running pretty quickly. Yes? I have Sprite Backup, but I'm not sure if that's going to overwrite anything after the radio upgrade????
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Well my logic (that could be wrong) would say that a restore of your backup would get you to were you are now.
That you would need a restore as you have to do a hard reset after the 1.12 radion install.
But I can't answer the question will the radio be restored as well,
I don't know, I don't know the settings in the backup application, so am sorry I will have to let somebody else answer this one.

Installing TT3 problems!!!!

I am having major problems installing TT3 on my new XDA 2i, it keeps coming up with an issue about not displaying correctly as it was meant for an earlier version of ppc and then wont load, it also has t versions of the gps software on it that I cant get rid of the icons from the programmes menu.. Can anyone help or tell me how they got round the problem please.
Thanks.
Please can you explain your problem in more detail. Thanks
It sync's and transfers files but they do not extract when loaded onto the XDA, all I get a pop up box (twice) that says that there may be display problems as I am using a newer os then ttn3 etc.............., Then when you look in the windows folder and select ttn3 it says no application associated with the file. The GPS programme installs, but then if you uninstall you get left with the icon for the gps prog. left in the programmes folder (I now have 2 icons in that folder). Hope that makes it clearer.
try doing a hard reset ,,but backup first with sprite ,, and see if that helps ,dont worry about that message it will always come up about not being able to display
Ok, Will try that. Is it best to load TT3 on before restoring?
no backup first incase it doesn't work ,then you can always go back to your old setup and get back any lost info

Another cry topic? WM6 bug

Yes, probably topic #1000 about this. But PLEASE keep reading.
I got the famous WM6 bug/error/whatever.
Symptoms:
- Access is denied error message when trying to copy files to the phone using ActiveSync.
- Access is denied error message when trying to delete any files or copy files between folders and/or the storage card on the phone.
- You do not have permission to download that type of file in Internet Explorer when trying to download any files.
- No programs show up in Remove Programs.
- Installation Unsuccessful error messages when trying to install any applications.
- ActiveSync will fail with an error message that you should start the troubleshooter.
It might have something to do with F-Secure I installed, and tried to uninstall (which ofcourse is impossible, since no programs show up in my installed programs/delete programs list). However, tons of ppl have had the same problem before so it has probably have nothing to do with F-Secure.
Now about the famous fix (which can be found for example here).
It's not working for me. Yes I tried this fix like 10 times, exactly like its written, sometimes a bit different, not using bold but Italic etc etc. I find #12 an inconsitency for example, since shutting it down and THEN doing a soft reset doesnt make any sense to me. Anyway I did like it said, and I still have all the problems I've had before.
My question: is there anyone that has had this bug before and DID fix it, or is there anyone that knows how to fix it after all? Or, last but not least, is there someone willing to rewrite the fix in uber noobish language, step by step, that might help me fix this. I'm quite desperate and totally not looking forward to hard reset my device. Thnx in advance
Some device information:
ROM Version: 1.93.404.1 NLD
ROM Datum: 07/10/08
Radioversion: 1.00.25.05
Protocolversion: 52.29.25.12H
Dutch provider Hi
No new roms installed, flashed stuff nothing. Just tweaks and programs installed.
I'm wondering if I should leave it like it is now and be patient for replys, or move/recreate this topic somewhere more "windows mobile"-like, since it might have something to do with the OS itself, and not just my kind of mobilephone ...
Sorry to hear your problem. I'd came across the problem once and YES the fix doesn't cure all the problem.
Luckily i've backup my PDA using sprite before the problem starts. What i did: 1) Hard reset the device. It will CLEAR ALL the memory and restore to factory default.
2) Reapply my first backup. (if you have it, if not, just reinstall everything). Remember though your backup in activesync might not be sync again! - that what happen to me. Luckily i have a copy in my Hermes.
3) My PDA is back to normal!
4) Careful when you modding your PDA. Just don't get mad to those that tries to help, some might not work on your device depends on what ROM you're/they're using. If anything goes wrong, just accept the fact that its your fault and -ALWAYS- have a backup ready. Just Hard Reset.
And I'm sure you're familiar with the lack-of-a-backup-till-I-need-it thingy ... I'll go mayhem on MSWM if I'm losing my photos and texts ... Contacts I can copy or just rewrite, but damn, my photos :s Thnx for the reply tho.
If you keep it synced with your computer/outlook, there shouldn't be much of a problem.
Ever since my first WM device, I've kept a list of all changed settings, etc. A hard reset isn't really that big of a deal. You do it, reinstall a few apps you had, change some settings from the cheat sheet you keep, sync with outlook, and you're good to go.
Think of your Diamond as a slave device to your regular PC. Sure, you apply a few tweaks to it, but other than that all your data should be on your PC.
Yeah and foto's and text messages and contacts ?? All gone, hard reset not that much of a deal I find it quite frustrating =(

Can not remove GlassClock_v1.cab

Dear hobbyists, developers and technicians,
It seems to me that you are specialist on solving problems with HTC telephones . Now i have an Touch Diamond ( version 1) wich i have installed GlassClock_v1.cab on. When i disliked the lay-out, i wanted to remove it and get back to the old style clock. But now the GlassClock_v1.cab file can not be removed from my phone, whatever i try.
The error that i get is " the programm/file is not removed entirely , do you want to remove the programm/file ?" . Then you can push the 'Yes' button, but the file still does exist after removing was 'removed' .
Does anyone have a solution for this very anoying problem?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely, the reason the clock cannot be completely removed is because part of it is still running in memory. It may be only a single file. I suggest you use an app like MemMaid(free full trial) to show running processes and stop the process that may causing your issue.
Then try uninstalling. Also, there may be some leftover files in the registry that you may have to manually remove using a registry editor like PHM RegEditor(freeware). You could also try to install a different clock which may overwrite the glass clock you had and allow you to remove the unwanted leftovers. Hope some part of that helps!

[Q] some .exe that could be removed from most himalaya rom's ?

i have found some .exe in most himalaya rom's "\Windows" folder that seem too be not needed so they could be deleted from future kitchens and stuff.
anyway here they are with screenshots..
1.sms_alert_fix.exe-pretty obvious.
2.SimLock.exe-i think something to do with unlocking sims (eventhough i've never used it).
3.cgacutil.exe-it shows you what version of NetFrameWork you are running (not sure if it gets installed as defult when NetFrameWork is installed.
4.hwhelp.exe-seems to be left from the keyboard option of character recognizer.
5.wrlsmgr.exe-maybe a part of the himalaya wireless driver.
can these be removed or deleted safely?
any ideas?

SMS_Alert_Fix will revive your phone when you will get a sms.
Simlock is really weird.
cgacutil is funking needed.
hwhelp is not needed but I don't want to know what will happen when deleted
wrlsmgr is needed for people who have SDIO Wifi card which himalaya support.
thats it then SimLock.exe is getting deleted and i will see what happens!
Here is what I removed to get free sectors in My WM6.1. The only way to learn effectively is: trial and error. Next try to read and understand the registry. It's all in there.

msim is keyboard right?
wisplite is totally unneeded, you can delete it but don't forget to delete registry entries in shell
also i know these can be deleted bcuz they are to do with error reporting and feedback-
DwXfer.dll
dw.exe
ceipui.exe
and also this-
BackPack.dll
hey muckelmaus these are needed for keyboard-
msim.dll
msim.96.dll
this for the 4 dots you have to tap when you first start up a new rom-
welcome.exe
and this is one of your splash screens-
welcomehead.96.png
and this is used for the search device for file function-
shfind.exe
otherwise i cannot see any problem with deleteing the rest of them...
i have also found this on a other part of xdadev-
*
Hd.dll
*
Aosaxst0.dll
*
Mencfilt.dll
Here Hd.dll and Aosaxst0.dll are used for M$ debug. Like some times on pc the apps close itself, and windows asks you to send the details to M$ (example. error number : 893647). We ( users) don’t know what it means, only the developer in M$ know. But I never saw these files report anything to us. SO!!! We don’t need them! they are trash!!
Now Mencfilt.dll is for storage card encrypt. If you don’t use it, you can delete it as well. Have you had this experience where after flashing a new Rom every thing in storage card can’t show any more!!!! but its still use the space in the card. Yes it's because of this file only.
**NOTE: There are some device in which removing these files causes system issues so be careful. But only a few devices

As I used a german 'qwertz' keyboard and a smaller splash screen, these files are just overwritten in my rom. These are backups.
I skip the Touchscreen alignment at first bootup (it doesn't work anymore after changing initflashfiles.dat)
Did you ever try to use * as a joker with the search program? Totally useless, so it is overwritten by a better app, renamed to: shfind.exe.

It didn't bother, everything worked 'till I deleted some files in startmenue and rearanged the programs. But noone told me that he missed the feature. Approximately 300 users over all. Even if some of them only tested. For me it was OK, and I'm still running it from the very first day, without any need of a new hard reset 'till now.
muckelmaus, why do you have a smaller startup screen?
I reduced the size of the files to get some kB/sectors free, as my rom is full of third party apps.

As I remember you can put JPG file as welcomehead
there is 2 solutions:
Save as jpg file and then just rename into .png
Save as jpg and change registry entry in redist dpi 96
by the way:
look at this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen]
"MSBitmap"="\\windows\\welcomehead.96.png"
"MSTimeout"=dword:7530 ; 30000 milliseconds
"CarrierBitmap"="\\windows\\welcomehead.96.png"
"CarrierTimeout"=dword:7530 ; 30000 milliseconds

maybe we could have 2 splash screens and change their duration on screen
So, when combined with bootloader 2 splashes (as I post tutorial to change it easly) we can have 4 splashes.
Good for doing PC boot images as I did before hima died my work in attachment
(I know that hima does not have AMD Althon but it seems good)
