T-Mobile Signal Problems on HTC TouchViva - Touch Viva, MDA Basic General

Hello all,
I bought this TouchViva with pdaviet's 6.5 ROM already installed. Although it worked fine with the seller's AT&T account, I am having problems keeping a connection with my T-Mobile service. The signal bars are low most of the time, but from time to time it loses signal altogether and searches for up to 30 minutes before connecting again. Sometimes I have to reboot to get a connection. I flashed pdaviet's 6.1 onto it, thinking it might be a bit more stable, but no joy. This is a very sleek sexy phone - but I need reliability too. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks,
Susan

Hmm Thats Weird...I Have T-Mobile on mine also but Im at Full Strength Almost everywhere...and so far havnt lost signal at all.
Srry i wasnt of any help

Thanks for the Feedback
It's good to know that it's working for you. I noticed tonight that the only way I could get a dropped signal back was to take out my sim card and put it back in. I've tried that before with mixed success but I am beginning to wonder if the sim card is not making a good connection, or that the sim cards moves a bit because it's not really "locked" in place. Any thoughts?

well if your sim card is damaged that could be one of the problems, check the tmobile coverage in your area? and probably the sim card not being locked into place is bad, possibility that it moves to much and the sim card isnt read correctly(i really dont know just making educated guess without the "educated" part )

RECEPTION Issues with T-Mobile MDA

All,
I got a new MDA and for some reason, it just does NOT work in my house all the time. I move my SIM into Razor, works fine. MDA would only work 50% of the time. It can not find T-Mobile network AT ALL! I would go down the street and it will pick up the signal. They I go back home... it works fine... then it will either lose signal and that would be it until i leave the house or, it will be Ok for a while... Makes NO sense...
Are their upgrades or anthing i can do? This is specific to cell reception only...
Thank you very much!
try updating to the latest imate rom, not saying i will work bit worth a shot
impreves the speed + stability of your phones as well.
Doug
Hey... I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. I went through the same B.S. with T-Mobile. You have to call and complain. It turns out that when the signal is relatively weak **but not weak enough for a RAZR to work** the MDA or SDA (as well as some other HTC devices) can't properly register on the network. When you call, just make sure that you keep escalating this to the highest tier (Tier 3). They are going to try to blame the SIM Card (make sure you have another phone nearby so that they can make sure the SIM is not the issue). They have to issue an engineering trouble ticket. They will eventually get back to you and tell you that they have to add towers/strengthen the signal and that it would be done within 120 days. Just F*&(in incompetent... Let me know how it works (and be dogged... don't let them give you the brush off or send you another device (which will incidentally be a refurbished one not a new one) this is a NETWORK problem).

Problem solved but questions

My Kaiser has been working fine now for about a year. Recently traveled from one city to another. When I got off the plane noticed that I couldn't dial out nor surf the web. I also noticed that the touch screen was pretty unresponsive. While driving home from the airport and playing with my phone (about 30 minutes or so) shut off the 3G part of the phone and noticed that I could dial out. The phone was in Edge mode and it somewhat worked but the touchscreen was still kind of unresponsive. Called and opened a service request with AT&T. After a couple of calls and some "detail" checking I was told that my SIM was trashed. They said that maybe it was trashed going thru the airport X-Ray machine. (odd to me). Wondering if somehow there was an attempt to hijack my SIM remotely (BT?) or am I being paranoid? I recieved a new SIM today and I had it turned on. All appears well at this time.
I had the same issue with my old Sonyericsson. Traveling from Indianapolis to Denver, when I arrived the messaging and internet was really buggy. They told me that my sim card wasn't compatible with their network. That seemed really odd to me too. However, they gave me a new one and once it was registered on the network everything was cool.
Long story short - I don't think anybody was trying to hack your phone via bluetooth or anything like that. There are just minor quirks in the network when traveling long distances... probably from the network being made up of smaller ones that were simply acquired through buy-outs.

Traveling long distances will not "trash" your SIM, I go to HKG every year...no problems...that is a farther distance than Indianapolis to Denver...

Nobody said anything about the distance itself causing issues. What I said was that not all areas of att's networks are up to par, so older sim's may not work everywhere.
I don't work for att or anything but this has been my experience.
Thanks all for your responses. My 3G is still working in the Midwest. BTW my SIM card was working fine for almost a year (when I purchased Tilt). I also have traveled to the same place in FL a "few" times this past year with no SIM issues. One thing though is that 3G is not available yet where I travel to FL. (everytime I go there I can only get the Edge network).
It's funny... I've been on 3 round-trip flights since buying my Tilt. After each flight, the phone started acting buggy. Laggy, screen not refreshing when it should, programs refusing to run, etc.
A hard reset and restoring from my latest backup resolved all the issues each time. So, it seems that (at least in my case) the SD card is fine, but memory may be getting trashed in the phone. Of course, I'm blaming it on the x-ray process.
Next time I fly, I plan to turn the phone off completely before going thru screening to see if that makes a difference. Anyone else notice odd things happening after a plane trip?
I had a similar problem in the UK, although didn't actually involve travelling!
When I got my new Kaiser through O2 UK, I had upgraded from my old Wizard. I swapped SIM's and everything was fine. 3G was in operation in my part of the world at the time and it worked spot-on.
Then, after 2 weeks, 3G suddenly stopped working. GPRS was OK (no EDGE here!) but just couldn't get 3G signal. On startup, the 3G icon would appear, the signal strength would then drop to nothing, and would then change to a 'G'.
O2 said that my SIM was not 3G compatible - strange how it was working before though! They sent me a new SIM and everything's been fine since.
What I believe happened in my case is that they had upgraded the network in my area to HSDPA but hadn't activated it at that time. I believe the changeover is what made my older SIM suddenly incompatible.
HSDPA became active about 3 days after receiving my new SIM and my signal etc. has been fine ever since.
So, possibly when you guys have travelled, you've actually visited places where the network has been upgraded making your SIM incompatible there?
Also, have you tried manually searching for networks? If you're in a foreign country, your phone may be continually scanning for networks which will undoubtedly slow it down and make the screen unresponsive?

No service - problem

Yesterday I got my brand new Diamond and when I got home the first thing I did was update the ROM from the htc website, everything went ok, I made a call, did some settings and let it to charge, later on I saw that I had No service with the SIM that I had in it originally, I started freaking out of course, rebooted, did soft reset, did hard reset, I even reinstalled the flash to make sure everything went ok. The signal did not work, I mean it got the signal, after 2 seconds loose it, after 1-2 minutes found network again and after 2 seconds loosing it and that was going on. So I tried a SIM card from another network which worked, then I tried a friends SIM from the first network which did not work. Eventually, I selected the network manually on my sim and it started up but only with 2 lines on signal. It seems to be working since last night with 2-3 lines signal but I suspect that could be that we have low 3G coverage over here, anyway.
Has anybody else encountered this problem ? Why do you think this happened? Should I rush into the store to take it back or is it some settings or software?
Also I have the rom from the htc website, is there any other version that works better?
Also could anybody give me a quote on the battery life because I am uncertain of it, I am not pretentious, if it holds up 2-3 days with normal use(phone + a little wi-fi and whatnot) then I am satisfied.
Thank you.
did you take your sim out while you flashed the ROM?
Umm... I must be stupid or something but I didn't, I must say this is not my first phone flashing so I don't know what was in my mind, did I damage the SIM or what ? It seems to work now though...
I've never flashed without taking the sim out, having said that I know people who have flashed with the SIM in and havn''t had a problem. But then there's a few that have had issues when the sim was left in during flash. Good to hear that it's working again.
If I encouter the problem again do you think flashing it without the sim will solve it ?
Also what ROM do you have? Do you recommend one that is better than the one from the HTC website?
What is your battery life average?
well it's hard to know - if you flash again be sure to take out the sim, but if the problem persists maybe you need to get a sim replaced. I work for Telstra here in Australia and a replacement sim costs $30. But if we "say" the sim has "failed" there is no replacement charge.
I am waiting for elite 2.5 rom which is due to be released any moment here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=403296&page=18
My battery life is pretty good - it holds up 2-3 days with normal use (phone + a little wi-fi and whatnot) but if I do alot of browsing I need to charge every day.
I understand, well, what it was strange is that it didn't work with any other SIM I tried from Vodafone network, I tried my friends and another one but worked fine with a sim from another network during that time when I had the problem.
I will keep my eye on it and hope it doesn't happen again.
Do you use Yahoo by any chance on your device? I get the e-mails perfectly with the imap server but I can't get to send any e-mail with the smtp server the phone has configured automaticly...
probably the default settings for yahoo are diff...i think it requires a reg change possibly to fix? not sure....
regarding the flashing...i've flashed my diamond around 7-8 times, not sure...pretty much tried every cooked rom here cept for 1 or 2 and the official WWE ones...never had any issues with flashing (and my sim was inside the phone every one of these times)...
it happend to me
it happend to me, in places with low signal... hapend a lot
what solve it was flasing the radio rom 1.00.25.05 i think it may solve all your ploblems.
please let us know
pd. i had signal problems with al the older radio roms even the 1.00.25.03
thanks jr-daza, i will search for the rom to flash now.
is there a place on the forum where i can download it ?

Phone continously disconnects and loses signal if 3g is on

Hey guys, I have this prepaid ATT pay as you go simcard with the medianet unlimited on and the phone goes into a continuous disconnect and reconnect with the 3g signal if I have 3g enabled in the connection manager. If I turn off 3G then it works just fine and sticks with an EDGE connection. Is there something that I am doing wrong? I checked the connection settings with another friend who uses 3g from att as well and settings are the same. I have also resetted the phone multiple times too.
Oh and the phone I have is the ATT Tilt running Hyperdragon's most recent rom.
I'd try swapping SIM with your friend and see if it works for both of you that way. If the Kaiser still can't connect to 3G, you might want to try another ROM, if to no avail you might have the broken 3G radio problem.

I had the same problem. Got a brand new 3G sim card from mobile operator. No help. So sent it to warranty again.

Yes, a lot of people including me had to send their Kaiser for a mainboard exchange for that same problem.
Here's the old thread about it I found when I had the problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335074
Yes, it's a hardware problem. Seems to be fairly common. My TytnII had the same problem.
I had to send it off for repair last Monday. They sent me a replacement phone on Wednesday.
Oh great, I bought this phone a while back from someone else and was using it with Tmobile and am trying it out with ATT prepaid. So I guess I am not covered and am stuck with a phone with a broken 3g radio?
First try the steps described above, sometimes configuration/ROM trouble can make it look similar.
I tried calling support and talking with them and nothing really worked. They said I would have to do warranty exchange through HTC. They said that all they would need is a credit card number and they send the new one first and I have to send back the broken one and I won't be charged if there is no water damage or too many drops right? Do they send you a completely new device? I have kept this phone inside a microfiber pouch its whole life and there are literally no scratches anywhere and a screen protector on it since day 1. It seems to work fine when on the EDGE network, so should I send it back? I don't want to get charged for anything.
I have the same problem... it started with the stock ROM, I have tried four different ROMs, five different radios, even tried reverting to the 6>0 ROM thiking it was a 6.1 glitch, and nothing worked. I get EDGE just fine, but if I switch to 3G, I get a signal for maybe 30 seconds and then lose it.
Lucky for me, my warranty expired. However, AT&T is supposedly releasing the Diamond soon, I thnk I'll plod along until then.

Phone shows full service but I don't receive calls

Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

Ive installed stock HTC ROM. And its going again.
One question. Are you using Opera Mini maybe?

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me

Did Att fix your problem? I had same issue with my tilt 8925. I tried all the orginal Att rom "same problem". After couple minute, I can't receive and make call. thanks

I didn't tried asking AT&T for a new sim card. but I will call them to change the sim card. Does anybody know how to disable the 3G function?
Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.
