[SOLVED] Reading for hours, can't find solution - can't install HardSPL - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root my G1, and despite the fact that every guide in existence gives different steps, I've managed to confirm I HAVE root now but I need to load the HardSPL so I can load roms to the phone... right.
Except when I do HOME+POWER I get the red/green/blue/white boot loader screen and it says Serial0. I don't get the recovery image. Camera button is not stuck, it works fine.
Anybody know why it won't let me to the recovery screen?
EDIT:
Solution: Turns out recovery image itself was corrupt. Downloaded cyanogen's recovery 1.4 and all was well again.

I'm surprised that after reading for hours you didn't post this in Q&A...
Plug in phone.
Do the power home thing.
Press the back key.
Smack forehead with phone repeatedly.

Lol after reading this I couldn't stop laughing

Oh COME ON!!!
Talk about rude - you take the time to reply but you don't contribute... wtf.
I have been at this for FOUR HOURS!!!!!!!!!! I have searched every thread I can find for a solution, I haven't been spending hours looking at exactly how I should avoid offending someone! I gotta say, I never got this kind of rudeness in the Vogue forum, maybe switching to an android device has put me in with a new 'class' of users?
Now as far as the problem - the problem is that HOME+POWER does NOT bring up the recovery screen - THAT is the problem! It brings up the boot loader screen instead.

what step r u on ur using this right http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480

Sounds to me like the recovery image was not installed in telnet, without it you would not be able to get into recovery cause there is not one to get into, read your steps on rooting and if if you have to redownload a recovery image, that is what happened to me on my second phone that I rooted

This is what I'm beginng to think, that the downloaded recovery image has errors or something. I think I'll try redownloading it.

Most likely is, it happens every once in awhile and yes you will get some people on this forum that are quite rude and make fun of you without helping, a lot will also sit there and play mod, but you have to just bare with it. There are a lot of great people that will help you out and all the devs do a really great job so the android platform was a great choice in my opinion

well unfortunately, I downloaded the recovery image again, put the sdcard back in the PC, copied it over again, ran through the root process on the device again.... and still can't get the recovery ROM...
did not expect this much of a problem, I had no issues unlocking my Touch VOGUE (similar process) and I run through going to recovery ROM all day long with people at my job, when all the n00bs forget their gmail passwords.

Solved!
After downloading recovery.img 3 times from the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480, I finally gave up and downloaded cm-recovery-1.4.img instead, renamed it recovery.img, and now I can access the recovery rom.
yay!
kudos to those that helped out! If you ever get me on the line at t-mobile pda tech support just say "xda developers" and I'll make sure to do my best to help out a bud!

That's great to hear buddy, seems like just a bad image, you will really like the g1 a lot now that it is rooted

TheDudeOfLife has contributed more to this forum and to making your device run like it does more than you ever will. He is one of the main developers here and has a large following using his ROM, it would be hard for him to contribute more than he already has.
Also, he did give you advice, he advised you to try hitting the back button to see if it would do anything, and if as suspected that it did help, he was only pointing out how dumb you would feel if that was all it took.
Just saying... anyways, congrats on fixing your phone. Next time post in the correct forum (I think its been moved anyways), and could you add [SOLVED] to the title of your thread so other might find it easier if they have the same problem.

Well it was resolved which is the main thing, was just a bad image before flashing which can happen.
TheDudeOfLife has contributed a fair bit to Android as well which his ROMs and whatnot and pressing Back does enable FASTBOOT at that stage.
No main harm done eh? ^_^ As h.nocturna suggested, if you could add a "[SOLVED]" tag to the thread title that would be great.

And you should feel privilaged that the dude came here and tried to help.

Again, the original poster wasn't bashing 'the dude', just stating the obvious fact that mocking people and not contributing makes him look like an ass.
I know this post was very off topic, I was just so shocked that people bow down to ROM developers like they can do no wrong.

I was pointing out that he said that the Dude didn't contribute when indeed he gave him instructions on how to solve his problem (contribution #1) and he also contributes by developing ROMs that help everyone (contribution #2). So next time, read what I said and why I said it instead of just taking the quote out of context. And I don't think he was mocking, again, read why I don't think he was.

Wow, when did everyone become such sensitive nannies?
To be honest I thought I was answering his question with a joke and the answer. I didn't read (reading is fundemental) it and realize his recovery was bad. Glad you guys were able to work this out.

I do appreciate any and all help. I apologize for my own rash reactions. hours of fighting with something that should have been straightforward can do that to you! No idea why the image was bad twice, but once I switched to the other recovery image it was all good. I will add [SOLVED] to the title as suggested.

Respect this

If you in.ex brick your device, I undestand that you wanna fix it as fast as possible, and that you in panic post 100's of threads asking same question:
"I did this or that, blahblah, and my phone is dead/bricked/stuck in bootloader and so on,please help me im desperate...."
Not only do many post many threads in diffrent sections, they send several pm, and make contact on msn and mail.
DO NOT BEHAVE LIKE THAT, its damn annoying. I hate beeing contacted this way. I GET THE FRICKEN MESSAGE, and if I dont answer within a day or two then im not gonna answer. Its that easy.
So, please dont pm, msn, email or w/e to me if you have issues with bricking, flashing, soft reset, hard reset, where to find a fix to all the worlds problems and why you cant get it up......
I know I might sound like I need to calm down. But actually I am not "pissed off" I just dont have the time to help all with these issues, and when I say that word "all" I mean all, YOU included.
Im not answering anymore posts, pm, msn or email on theese issues, so dontwast your time.
thx
cheers
(please note that this was about those who contacts me in all these ways and then some, within few hours)
ps. When I say no, its NO. (you know who you are)
People should learn to use the search function a lot

Carty..
This is funny, but then again it's not. This thread is definitely collecting views indeed. So Itje, your thoughts are indeed "felt" and "respected", by me and many others here. But those few anxious ones, I'm unsure as to why they post the same question(s) in different threads and forums. Laziness I suppose. I once was a junior noob, now I'm a senior noob helping others (as best as I can).
PS. Itje, you are a celebrity here, and those that constantly ask you for advice and complain, they are the paparazzi chasing you around. I'll be a bodyguard if you like, lol. I work in the justice system (in the states) so I know what it's like to have many people coming up to you asking for hookups, advice, and complain, and you are just trying to do what you enjoy with what you know. It's a headache and a half for sure.
Much Respect ..
lol, Im sure I can manage without a bodyguard.
I can speak for myself mostly, but a bit support from time to time is greatly appreciated not fake support, dont agree with me without agreeing with what I say
And yeah, search both using google and searchtab in xda forums are not frecuently used by newcommers, and maybe not seniors either, but what do I know?
No, but what Itje said is true. It does get annoying to be read messages or posts that deal with topics about their phones being bricked. Yes they're panicked, and yes they want to resolve the problem as soon as possible, but that's why we usualy posts warnings about flashing stuff to their phones. Realisticly, if you don't have the patience to do a search and look for answers, then you probabaly won't have the patience to follow the proper steps to flash a device, and that will result in a brick.

I am a Wizard owner. My sister has a Wing behaving badly. I came here to search a fix for her and stumbled upon your thread. PROPS TO YOU!!! I know the Wizard section is constantly mucked up with multiple threads, please help me....blah blah blah. I have taken to answering those threads with my new mantra:
DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING ON YOUR DEVICE WITHOUT FIRST READING EVERY WIKI AND STICKY IN THIS SECTION (at least 3 times each!)...USE THE SEARCH BUTTON, READ PEOPLE'S SIGGY'S AS LINKS ARE OFTEN POSTED THERE TO HELP. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CUSTOMIZE AND/OR FIX YOUR DEVICE WITHOUT FIRST UNDERSTANDING YOUR DEVICE.

Again props to you for speaking your mind about this. And yes, this needs to be respected.

Yeah its pretty bad that people are just diving in without taking the time to understand what they are actually doing when they change the os on their phones. Ive bricked mine at least twice today, but I know how to fix it. Its really simple to fix half the problems that we have when we screw with our gear.
If it doesnt boot, or boot right. Hard reset.
That doesnt fix it. Boot loader. Set back to factory.
This stuff is really simple. Building Roms. Different story.
I think the mods should include a "search first" rule. If anyone posts something thats been discussed they should get a warning, and if it happens again, ban them. I've seen this on tons of forums that have this same problem and it works out quit well .
Have we all had an "oh ****" moment when we realized we were doing it wrong, or incompletely?
Yes.
But if you READ READ READ you won't brick your device. There's always a risk, there's always the possibility, but I can't remember the last time I actually bricked ANY device! I'm not a huge fan of the current flashing method for these custom Wing ROMs - largely because the official RUU flasher is just... more reliable. But regardless, I've STILL not bricked my phone, because I FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.
I think that people get so excited and think it's EASY and ANYONE can do it. And they kill their systems. It's a similar situation with people who MOD their PS2 or Wii or DS or PSP, they routinely muck it up because they can't be arsed to go read the stickies and do some research before jumping in.
Keep up the good work, itje!

READ READ READ...and when your eyes burn and you see in triple...READ the one in the middle!!!
Modding your phone is much like sex. At first you are excited to get down and dirty so you dive right in and it often is disappointing (because you didn't know what you were doing-damn virgins), but as you do it more, you get better at it, and eventually you have moments when you go "damn I'm good"!!
The first time you mod your phone, you are excited and really likely to muck it up. But as you get to know your device, and experiment, you have those moments when you finish cooking a rom or something, and go..."damn I rock". But until you get to know the how's and why's, you will often be met with disappointments.

Sorry but I dont know what else to do

If this is a noob question I'm sorry I've been around these parts for a little while and even though i know how to root the G1 im having a hard time un-rooting it.
OK I just recently traded a buddy of mine's white G1 for my Bronze G1. Its a little ruff around the edges and its a little messed up so i was going to do a warranty claim.
I'm having an issue with trying to get the splash image to reset it self better yet I cant get it to work whatsoever. every time i go and do the whole
run
cmd
cd desktop
cd fastboot
then type "fastboot erase splash2"
It hangs there and just says <waiting for device>
I have done this and have changed my splash image on my bronze g1 a million times with no issues but for some odd reason its like it doesn't recognize this damn phone?
while I'm here I've also had issues after flashing the original spl and placing the DREAIMG.nbh file on the root of my sd card going into the bootloader and it not giving me an option to do the update. it just goes from the "rainbow" screen right back to the "rainbow" screen am i doing something wrong?
I would love to resolve this before my replacement comes in the mail just in case T-mobile feels like giving me $hit about the phone being rooted.
Once again I'm sorry if this maybe a misplaced post or if its a noob question but from what I've seen I'm the only person having these issues
Answers for unrooting are all over, a quick search would've yielded plenty of answers. Questions go in the Q&A section, this section is for devs and testers.
1. replace whatever recovery image you're using with the stock recovery image.
2. use the RC29 DREAIMG.nbh to downgrade the phone and "unroot"
3. pack it up and ship it.
This takes less than 5 minutes to do and T-Mobile gives you plenty of time to ship the broken phone, so need to do it before the new phone arrives.
As an aside, I know four people who've shipped rooted phones back to T-Mobile and never heard a peep.
EDIT: if your phone isn't seeing the .nbh file its probably because your SD card is FAT16, it needs to be FAT32.
I guess you must have only read part of what i wrote.
i know what I'm "supposed" to do I'm writing what my phone is doing while in the process. yes i know its only supposed to take 5 minutes and I have googled and have searched. I'm not being lazy if that's what you implying
you find somone or somewhere where someone has had the same issues and i will apologize. re-read my post then answer again thanx
p.s. and yes my sdcard is and has been formatted to Fat32

Question about ROM Development

Where do I get started?
Just been wondering that as of late, how do I get around to get starting on my own build?
Any advice is helpful thanks!
They don't like to give straight answers to this question. I think it's kind of like when you first start in a trade, like when I started dong electric work, you have to pay your dues. In the case of a trade it's dong the **** work, in this case I think it's searching thousands of threads, trial and error, risking bricking your phone, etc. Nobody likes a noob taking a shortcut. Lol.

While this is *sometimes* true, we here at XDA try not to make it so. However, I will say that it's quite a task and a pain in the ass to find the information one tries to look for; there really isn't a "Tutorial" section (Wiki, yes -- but with limited info). Usually, the search function will find you the information you're looking for -- if not, ALWAYS check other websites. (e.g. Android Central, Modaco's website, etc)
Case and Point:
To get started with ROM development, Icon making, and setting up a Ubuntu for the Android SDK, use these links below.
**All credit goes to Gbhil - who can be found here and at Android Central for the information found in these links!
** For ROM development
1. http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
** For Customer Icons
2. http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/6070-changing-hero-application-icons.html
** Setting up Ubuntu
3. http://forum.androidcentral.com/hac...ramming-envrionment-using-ubuntu-windows.html]
These should get you started, after this -- like I said earlier -- USE the search function, there is information here; otherwise search elsewhere also. Good luck.
a bit drastic, but not untrue...
actually just asking "how to" is a bit unspecific. just start by looking how others have done it. and to actually brick your phone by toying with roms is hard to do. a pretty safe way to achieve a brick would be flashing a wrong radio or spl, which is not part of rom cooking. as long as your custom recovery image boots your phone is fully working. now go and rip apart your favorite rom, and a last hint: there is actually a thread called "[how to] rom cooking" somewhere in the hero section... maybe worth a search?

For the record guys, I was just joking about the not being helpful thing. I wasn't trying to offend anyone. And I completely understand the idea behind the mindset, regardless. When someone at work comes up to me and asks me something about an android phone, I say "I have written three tutorials on troubleshooting, syncing, and basic use of the device. Go read it." After I take the time to write the **** down, it's offensive when someone just wants to ask and have their hand held instead of doing a little reading and legwork. But once again, wasn't trying to insult or piss anyone off.

lol you probably have no update script
unzip an existing (working!) rom and check the contents of the META-INF folder, the three files in it are the signatures and can be deleted (will be recreated when signing the the file in the end). now check the subfolders, eventually you will find the update script.
LOL. The ROM I trying to flash is the early 2.0.1 release from flipz. I was just clearing out stuff I didn't want. Ill take a look at that, thanks.

Welcome. As a member of this forum, you are expected to search and read for yourself; no one will search for you or hold your hand. A very good step by step link is easily found in the dev section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147284.
:good: thanks. Next problem I am having is I can not get the goo website to open so I can download acmeinstaller...
Isn't there a mirror?
I think I figured it out. thanks again for the help. Also I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158341
Is this a good tool kit to install android on the tp?
Sorry, never used it.

Reasonable search is expected...but your statement is not completely true. MANY people including myself help noobs all the time. Not everyone is a seasoned searcher in fact i help DEVS who are awesome in development but suck (lol) at using even google properly and it can be tough to find what u want. This is a help and information site ...some wont or dont have time to help what they deem a common sense /noob question. Were all here to help each other and a good starting point is to always remember we were all noobs once have a great day

Helping noobs is not the same as doing their work for them. I help. I point them towards guides that have already been written for their benefit. I step in when they run into problems. But. I don't hold their hands. I don't retype what has already been asked and answered many times. To do so would be to promote filling up these xda developers forums with junk, and keep treating them as noobs. Hopefully if properly guided they will then go from noobs to seasoned searchers and helpers of the next group noobs.

U didnt say any of that.you represented ME and others in your uncouth borderline Rude(just plain unfriendly to a new person on this wonderfully helpful site) comment. Nice helpful people is what makes this place grand. You could have said it i a couth way and you didnt and at the same tim saying it like you represent everyone here. Simply NOT true.if found that this person was lazy and maybe not inept at searching(everyone is different, some Good people just cant do what you deem common sense) then you can nicely put it to them and say hey bro you need to do a little more searching man but it's cool I'll help u out just remember next time or do u need tips on searching because its an art to be good at it . Or don't answer!!! Really? Is it that hard to be nice.or did u not realize you came off so callous? because everyone's done it ,I've done it but once confronted I apologized and was contrite ...what a man does or thats what i was taught. What u stated is somewhat true but not completely and certainly nowhere near the nice way I would say it not even close. Ive hopefully made my point.and seriously i mean it whan i say i wish you well.im jot being facetious.

I think there may be a language barrier here, especially concerning your use of the word "uncouth." I wrote curtly, but I did say welcome, I gave OP a quick explanation of XDA rules, and I gave him a link to a guide. And OP didn't seem to mind; he got a quick and helpful answer fast. Personally, I would rather get right to the helpful part instead of being wordy. And think we simply have a difference of opinion in the way we deliver words (I'm very, maybe overly, to-the-point in real life too). But the meat of what we're both saying here is the same: this is first and foremost a developer site, and though help is given here, members are expected to help themselves as well. Oh, and I'm not a man. I'm a woman.
Quite honestly, I don't appreciate being called callous/rude and being told that I must be contrite just because I don't phrase things like you do. Nice to me is being helpful, not using more words. But I do see where you're coming from. We just have a difference in delivery. And now we've spent more time and words talking about this than I did helping him. So I'm done here now.

It seemed to me that the op was being nice yes and i applauded that in a privet message. I wasnt trying to discredit or be mean while pointing out my OPinion of yes what i thought was an uncouth attitude. Obviously your a strait to the point no mince words women(my awesome wonderful wife is also) and she is in college and i have had to help her with her strait to the point writing because she has been marked down for it. My bad if i came off wrong trying to show how i thought you did. God bless and i hope we both have learned something. And we will agree to disagree what xda is. Have a good night or morning lol

Well done :good:. Now the fun begins don't forget to make a backup with cwm. AN APP called Rom Toolbox lite will make it easier if you used jcsullins cwm, just tell the app it's a custom cwm
Do ask a question if you get stuck as there are a lot of helpful people on this forum.
All the best.
Well now I have a problem. Got it to start installing but half way through the install it came up with an error saying that cm something or another was missing and that I needed to download it from hptouchpad.linuxhackers.ru. Tried that and there is no such site. Now I am stuck in usb mode with the 2 lil pings at the top of the screen and I can not get out of it...
I would recommend that you ACMEUninstall everything, make sure you've downloaded and moved all the files from your computer to your TP (including CWM), and try to ACMEInstall again.
Thanks will try that..
The guide I linked before has instructions for ACMEUninstaller. Another note: I would strongly advise that you ask questions on the forums instead of by PM. Generally, having multiple pairs of eyes on a question is better than having just one.
Thanks again man your a life saver... :good:
Man I am in love with this tablet now that I have android on it...

move the rom, gapps, and supersu over from a computer to your phone, then flash it in twrp. put your phone into recovery, then move them into your phone.
I'm a noob to this stuff so is there any thread with a tutorial or video explaining on how I can do this?

I don't think so, as this is the very basic thing that you should learn before you ever flash anything or before you root your device.
there are several ways you can transfer files, adb push is one, or you can just transfer them over using an option in twrp.
If you can't even drag and drop a file to your phone you shouldn't be flashing roms, this is pretty simplistic and basic... I try to help people but this gets really old everyday its the same thing over and over, sorry for my rant or sounding like a total d*#k!

Ive been on here since 2010,I just don't post every time somebody needs something,I let others chip in. Bit you have to admit how many times do you login and see the same thing day after day.
1. He bought the phone with cm13 on it already and is a noob and doesn't know how or
2 he installed cm13 on his own but accidentally deleted the os which means he's done it before but automatically forgot how to do it again
Again sorry to op I'm being mean tonight!

i actually used to agree with you completely, in 2013 i was fed up with the same questions over and over and over again. then something happened to me that let me see past being fed up. i guess something like seeing the light. ive been nothing but very nice with newbies since. i do see people asking questions over and over again, that should know what they are doing. it those people ill get on, and wont be nice sometime
Anyways to answer your question do as Simms said
1.boot to twrp
2. Plug device to pc
3. After downloading rom, gapps, and SuperSU drag and drop from pc to your nexus 6
4. In twrp click install and install rom, gapps, and SuperSU
5. reboot and if twrp asks to install super user select no
6. Profit!!!
I'll be blunt here.
I have no patience for people looking for a handout. If a noob comes to this forum, does their research beforehand, and then encounters a problem, I'm more than willing to help them out. They at least are trying to learn how to do things on their own.
I place great value on self-reliance, and will reward the self-reliant with as much help as I can provide, within the limits of my experience. The OP on the other hand is on their own. Unlike the self-reliant person, the OP didn't bother to do their homework before attempting to mess around with their device, and on encountering a problem that could have been solved with a simple search, hit XDA Developers for help after the fact.
An increasing number of noobs aren't even bothering to read and understand what they are doing, because they are under the illusion that rooting is somehow cool or will grant them instant street cred. Rooting, as anyone with half a brain knows, is serious business. One wrong step and your shiny new device could become a shiny new paperweight. So, if the OP is unwilling to help themselves through simple research, how will giving the answer to them teach them anything?

100% agree, thumbs up. I have said this before on here but I think an admin. Deleted it, I don't think anybody reads anything anymore they just want somebody to do it for them
