Installing icons on CM3.9.7 - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed Smorg v1.4 (full version with ROM) on my phone. Also downloaded the extra icons to have everything match. I was just wondering how you are supposed to install them the correct way. I found if I extract them and place them where ever, I can use them in better cut. I don't like it however that better cut will pull up all my other pictures as well. A while back I downloaded the aero icon pack from the market, I was just wondering if I took the .zip file with the icons and changed it to .apk can I anstall them that way (I really don't think that will work)?
Basically what is the correct way to install the icons (I want them to appear in the icon pack using better cut)?

Try the search.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471195

That really doesn't help. I don't want to pull apart my ROM, replace the png files, resign, and update.
All I want is to use the icons posted with the Smorg v1.4 ROM using bettercut. I wanted them to come up in the icon pack, so I wouldn't have to filter out all the other nonsense pictures that take forever to upload anyway.
Take the time to either read my post, or read the post you suggested, before you post "try the search"
(for the record, I did search. I don't think it turned out too well as it would take forever to go through every topic that came up, especially when most of them don't seem to apply, they just match certain key words)

Anybody have some answers that are useful?

I'm not sure how he has them packaged (at work, can't download) but look inside the zip to see if he zipped apk file (if you see only one file inside the zip named something.apk then he zipped it and you will need to unzip using winrar, zip7 or something like that) or if he renamed it to zip (if you see number of files inluding pics, and folders and xml etc etc then you will need to rename it to apk). From there, just install it like you would any file and use it in bettercut.
Alternative way: I've notice there's Smorg icon pack in the market... download and install that, should be the same thing
Good luck, please add [SOLVED] to the title if it works out for you.

Thank you so much, I swear I searched the market for icon packs to advoid all of this. That is exactly what I was looking for. It just makes it so easy to change the icons through bettercut without browsing through every single picture on my phone.

Making My Own Theme Multiple Questions??? & Plenty of Headaches!!!

I have been trying to make my own theme for the past 48hrs with no success, and it's really frustrating me I started with manila editor which gave me an error everytime i tried to replace one of the manila files with multiple icons i downloaded. I then ran into another editor cfc which has allowed me to at least change the icons but i still really dont understand some of the icons that are included with manila (totally different story)...Back to my issues I would like to know if someone can guide me on making my theme into a .theme file extension because i like to use diamond config tool it just makes everything so much easier. Also i've seen where a cab file will not uninstall and i dont want to have to hard reset just to change my theme.
Also I would love to know how to create my own clock because i'm trying to cook this whole allen iverson theme and i think maybe a custom clock best suits the theme i'm going for so i would probably need to learn how to make the clocks also.
I know it sounds like alot but i really need to get this started so any and all help, tips, tricks would be greatly appreciated.

I think to make a theme into .theme format, just zip all your files and then rename the extention from .zip to .theme. If you take all your manila files from standard tf3d from your phone and save to pc, then you will always have a backup to install instead of a hard reset when you have cab install troubles. That way you can overwrite any files cab installed. To create your own clock, when you look in editor you will see a tab stack and a tab single for clock backgrounds, alarm, and am/pm. Tab stack is the back background and tab single is the front background(clock background is two layers for flip effect). If you want to change digits, you will see the digits grouped , like 012, 345, 678, 9. Change images in your favorite image editor(like photoshop or gimp). For actually changing images/manila files, I use all three editors available depending on what I'm doing. There's Manila Editor, Chainfire's CFC GUI, and 6Fg8's M9Editor. Always keep a backup copy of any files you change, just in case

Matrix Theme for Sense 2.1

First, I got the idea and some of the icons from skilty in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425176. Thanks to skilty.
Although I started with skilty's theme, I have pretty much redone all the icons. Not everything was covered in the Rhodium Manila so I needed to add several things. I scoured the internet for some of the other icons and assembled them here.
The first picture is the loading GIF after a reset. The second picture is the background. The third is some screen shots of the TF3D manila. The last picture is the phone dialer.
For the contacts, I have used the Matrix cell phone for the mobile device, the old fashioned phone (hard line) as the home phone, and a phone booth as the work phone.
There are icons for Manila Today Page and for the new Manila TV tab.
Before you do any overwriting of files, I would suggest copying all your manila files to a folder on your desktop in case you want to go back to the way things were before.
I've attached all the manila files in the New Matrix Manila zipped file. The dialer screen, background picture, and other files are in the other zipped file. You just need to copy the manila files onto your device and then use a program like total commander to copy them to your \windows\ directory. I haven't had much luck removing TF3D from today and then re-enabling it. I pretty much had to do a reset after copying the files.
I'm having trouble right now uploading the loading screen gif. I'll see if I can still upload it.
I hope some of you enjoy it! And I don't take any responsibility if anything happens to your phone. There shouldn't be a problem since it is only graphic files that are changing.
I almost forgot to include the Action Screen I created.
You first need to have this installed (I know it was already installed in the Eneregy Rom series 2 I am using). http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=58625
Then you need to copy the contents of the attachment into the \windows\actionscreen\ directory. I have changed one of the buttons to a 3G toggle instead of bluetooth since I never used that one.
Also there is a skin for psShutXP. Its only the image files, so I'm assuming you already have it installed on your PPC device.
Attached is a new action screen by Oz from here.
And finally I have attached a skin for xdashutdown developed here.
Enjoy.
Here is a skin for the power radio app, Resco Explorer, and s2u2. I've also uploaded the matrix background that you'll need for s2u2 background.
Do not understand why this theme was buried. It is soo nice. indeed.

First, do you have Sense 2.1 or the newer 2.5 installed. You should find the info under you device info in settings.
Also, I think I'm going to resurrect this theme so I can use the new CHTScheduler for the CHT Home Tab. So I'll be updating this for sense 2.5 in the coming weeks. You may want to hold on for that.
If you still want what's posted here, I'll throw together some cab files for you. Most of the stuff is manual install, meaning you have to copy all the files to your devices windows directory. Does any of that help?
Hi!
Thank you very, very much! I already took some parts of it (the background pictures) and i put it on my phone. It looks ...WOW...but i still want to install the whole theme.. Yes, i have the latestes Enegy Rom installed, with Sense 2.5...So i will look forward for your new theme (and, if is not to disturbing, the guide step by step how to install it - i undestood that i have to copy all the files to \Windows, but..this is it?? ).

How hard is it to re-skin widgets?

While I'm new back in playing with the Android OS, I spent a ton of time modifying my iPhone when I had it, creating custom icons, wallpapers, overlays, etc.
What I've noticed recently is that most of the icons in the Android OS really don't have much synergy in their designs. Every widget maker has something a little different in what they see as their own design, but they often times don't make all of the widgets that I would like, and I'm stuck with a hodgepodge of different looking icons and widgets cluttering my screen.
I'm curious if there is a somewhat easy way to modify the graphics files of these widgets so that I can create a very clean theme. To give you an idea of what I would enjoy creating, I'll attach a before/after picture of some modified icons that I was using on the iPhone. While they retain the color schemes for the most part, I felt like I was able to make everything feel a bit more cohesive in a theme, and I would love to continue that trend on my Hero.
So the eternal question.... can it be done? And if so, is it something a mere noob back to the Android OS can make happen?
it is actually pretty easy, i will explain as good as i can. there are some drawbacks:
you need to resign the apk. there is testkey available at this forum, and i think you can generate your own with the sdk (not sure if and how). but after resigning the apps are signed with the testkey, not the developers key. i do not really understand what that means, but it was a hint i read somewhere...
i am not sure whether the apps will be flagged by the market as "update available", but i don't think so because they won't appear in your downloads list, since you have to install them "manually".
that is AFAIK all for the cons, here's the how:
1. extract the .apk, rename to .zip if necessary.
2. find the image you want to be replaced, should be somewhere in [extracted folder]/res/drawable/
3. edit the image to your needs and save it.
4. re-zip the contents of the folder (including the not changed elements of course) to whatever.zip
5. rename whatever.zip to whatever.apk
6. sign whatever.apk
as for signing, here is how to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551711&highlight=howto
the process for apps is basically the same as for update.zips, just don't use with recovery image but filemanager to install as regular app...
i think there is a theme howto out there on this forum, maybe that helps too.
kendong2 explains it well .... it is easy when it all clicks into place check my siignature for more help

How to theme, preferably with MM

Just wondering how to theme on the Hero. I know the rough idea from my small amount of experience with Winterboard. Indicate folder/app with and then have images to replace UI elements.
However I don't know how to work a .THM file or if anything special needs to be done to the zip file.. I tried to edit a theme once and it wouldn't load on MM so something was wrong..
Is there any guide?
Also: there is an app available for iPhone OS that gives you all the UI elements in a list and has an image to indicate where it's found on the phone, you can then edit it and it will change on the image so you have a preview of your theme without saving or applying it... Anything like this available or in the works?
essentially the .thm needs to be exactly the same filename as the .zip
Also, if you open the .thm with Notepad for example, you will see the format you need to keep.
If you modify someones theme, remember if you delete an apk (dir) then you need to delete the relevant lines in the .thm. Same goes for if you are adding apk's too. You need to add the lines, so it is installed to the correct location.
You do not need to do anything specific with the .zip.... This is the beauty of MM. It does the complicated bits for us.
To be brutally honest, i dont find MM very reliable (having made a very full theme). People report all kinds of crazy issues caused by MM.
There is a VERY good guide in this forum....Google 'xda metamorph theme' that will lead you to it.
Also, there is no apps like the one you mention for the iPhone.
Enjoy

[Q] 4g icon in themes

I ran into a major issue last night.
This was REALLY pissing me off, you know one of those things that SHOULD be working but isn't. Whenever I view the decompiled apk (framework-res, and systemUI)
The files are decompiled everything looks correct, but when I open the image files in cs5 they look all blurry as hell. I have attached some screenshots. Make any sense to anyone?
Just curious why the images would show up that way once they were pulled into PS. Its not just that image, its all the images. Does anyone know how I can resolve this or even prevent it from happening?
Can I not use Photoshop CS5? Dreamweaver CS5 seems to handle the XML files like a pro.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try without decompiling - its not needed just for replacing icons - use any zip program to open apks

Tried that too. The first pic is the picture preview in the folder. It only happens when its open in PS. Very strange. I can open it in paint, and the the icon is normal (just loses the transparency, of course).
Open the img with paint.NET first, then save, then you can open it in photoshop.
I think this is an issue with the img being indexed in photoshop, something like that.
It's an indexing issue, ps dies not do it right. Open the images in either paint.net or the gimp. Switch the mode to rgb, save then you can open them fine in ps
What a pain in the ass. Opening them all in paint.net now, this might take me awhile. lol
